  • Here we have a buyer's quick guide walkaround tour and test drive of the second generation Fiat Punto 188 (manufactured 1999-2010). This guide give some key areas to check when inspecting mk. 2 Puntos with a view to purchase. The example car here is a 2002 Fiat Punto 1.2 8-valve petrol (60 bhp) with no power steering.
    The mk. 2 Punto (aka Punto 188) is a great potential purchase for low budget motoring. The technology on them is simple and durable if well-maintained. Major areas to look out for are rust along the sills and floors, engine head gasket failure (mainly a problem on the 1.2 petrol engine), problems with the electric power steering, other electrical gremlins and a failing front wiper linkage. As with most cars, it's better to buy an example with lots of documented service history. A good Punto is easy to run, drives well and is practical. Parts are inexpensive and fuel consumption low.

    Thank you for this informative video. I just bought similar model but without power steering, air conditioning or ABS. A good traditional small car. This is what Fiat is good at, making small and practical but affordable cars.

    we have an early 2000 model with the 1.2.16v bought new and now with over 200k kms...runs like a dream. No issues at all except some rust which has been taken care of. Other than than normal maintenance and wear parts. (wiper mechanism issue solved with a small round clip found on-line via another youtube video)

    I own a mk2 01 1200cc8v over3000000 on the clock with normal maintenance &me with the pedal almost always to the floor the car runs perfectly.😊

    One tip when it comes to head gasket leak, try to find a gasket that is thicker.
    One time my mechanic brought me two to choose from, one was more expensive and he said "this one is known brand, better yea" but this second gasket was cheaper but way thicker and seemed like better quality so I ended up taking the cheaper, I know the saying "no money no honey" but my gut told me to trust the quality I see in front of me, not the price or brand.
    Mind you, this was the second time I was replacing the gasket, first time I was made to take more expensive one, which ended up leaking after 2 months.Plus the mechanic put tons of silicone gasket sealer.
    This time I told him "dont put any sealant, let the gasket do the work its supposed to" and the gasket never leaked again.
    I also did learn that you are supposed to put like a bead of sealant in corners but I ultimately ended not to, again, gasket is supposed to do its work.

      I would always recommend original manufacutrer parts for the headgasket. Never use sealants on a headgasket. On these engines you do need to use a small amount of sealant in the half-moon shaped corners of the rocker cover gasket however, or else it will leak oil.

    I got the same as my first car although it was overheating and i was so bummed about it thinking it was a bad headgasket but i started to change things myself and i fixed the thermostate and it fixed it lol now love the car no problems at all

      Interestingly, for the car in this video there is a note in the service records for changing a faulty thermostat as well! I still have the Punto and it runs great despite its advanced age.

    Hi i just got one with 185k km. For first car not bad, i had some problems due the installed alarm system but after removing that the car works fine, and the gearbox was leaking from main shaft wich needed replacing the seal from inside. Ended cheaper to buy a 2nd hand gearbox. so far only have tiny leaks of oil on the valve cover and i think the termostat gasket on the right side like you have xD
    Hope it lasts a few more miles and i'm tempted to mod a bit for confort, like changing the dash for a more complete and the throtle body for a bigger one and settle with that.
    Good to see that heart still working good with 270k km

      They are notorious for electrical problems, so make sure you provide your Punto with good battery that can provide good quality electricity to components, otherwise problems, Punto is very sensitive to issues with electricity.

      @@kruskotv1311 Oh yes IT IS. The old batery installed let me down twice, EVEN MOVING, But got an old but very strong Varta and after priming the gasoline it never stops. But i can see it draining fast the juice, even more since i installed a new android radio :P

    I was wondering what is the usual mileage these engines blow ?
    I am looking to buy one and mostly I see them around 200k kilometers, of course its worth testing if its the real mileage.
    But I was wondering is there like an average mileage number these 1.2 8v engines die at ?

      I think the lifespan of the engine is highly reflective of how well it has been maintained. I don't see any reason why the Fiat FIRE engine wont do "high" mileage as long as it gets regular maintenance. The example in this video has 280k kilometers on the clock and the engine is still fantastic.

    How can i identify my steering box? Mine is damaged and need to replace, but doesnt have the factory reference and are like 3 diferent sizes, i have one 1.2 80hp 16 valves, if u can help me i would be so thankfull

      If you try contacting a Fiat main dealer and supply the vehicle identification number (VIN), that would probably be the best place to start.

    How are the diesel engines ? Especialy the 1.3

      The 1.3 diesel is quite a good unit, very frugal and more power/torque, but there is more to go wrong than on a petrol engine. I don't know anything about the 1.9 diesel.

      Mine had a clunk as well and it turned out one of the exhaust mounts had failed and the exhaust hit the rear axle when going over bumbs. It was a very easy fix and maybe it is the case with your car as well. Hope it helps.
