    I just got that exact keyboard yesterday. The new Akko shine-through double-shot PBT caps look absolutely amazing on it. Every size keycap is included in the set. It's really gorgeous - better than my Tai Hao keycaps, plus the ASA profile is better than OEM in my opinion (kind of a cross between OEM and SA). Much improved overall over the GMMK 1 I have. I decided to go with speed bronze or kailh box pink switches. No mods yet, but I'm still deciding.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have yet to try ASA, but I may grab one of their unique colorways to take a look at soon. TaiHao DOES have some good sets, but they're typically in their Cubic profile, and even then those sets occasionally have issues, yeah.
      Of the two switches I'd PERSONALLY go Box Pinks due to the lighter overall spring weight and more natural actuation distance, but if you want faster actuation (happens sooner in switch travel) then the Speed Bronzes would work well for you, and you can just use your own spring to get the weight right.
      For mods on GMMK2, maybe consider a tape mod for the PCB if you want a brighter sound, or PE foam if you want to lean more in to that tight, marbley sound; you can get pre-cut adhesive pads for that from Divinikey or KBDFans. Another thing you could experiment with is Neoprene foam rolls, you can buy them off Amazon in different thicknesses and cut them to exactly fill in the bottom case better than the stock foam does. Polyfill is also good for that.

    I have the 65% and the way it's designed it just didn't sound good to me. I added a dual layer tape mod then replaced the switches with Milky Yellow Pros and it sounds great now. I had a very difficult time getting the cable out the first time, was more as expected the second when modifying the tape to remove a layer. I thought about the larger one but the 75% Pro is about a big as I can go. I use the GMMK 65% often during the day as I have multiple laptops for work and every bit of desk space counts. Again, great review!

    After getting annoyed with stabilizer problems on the gmmk pro, i picked up the gmmk2 yesterday. One thing thats weird is the left shift key is really silent while the others aren’t. Guess its just the stabilizer. Besides that sounds decent with the lynx lubed switches.

    2:18 Uhhh, you say that there is no numpad 0 keycap in the pudding set you're using. In the desc, you say you've used Glorious Aura v2. That set DO have a 1u "zero" cap in there. Did you miss that, or it just doesn't fit?

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never say in the description that's what I'm using. Why would I link the caps set I used when it doesn't have the correct cap for this board? Makes more sense to just link the set that's actually going to work. If you watch to 4:11, I directly mention that buying the Glorious keycaps will avoid the compatibility issue, hence my linking them.

    • @kryzerk9203
      @kryzerk9203 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheManicGeek Uhhh, I thought what you've put in the desc was what you've used when recording the video. Hence the confusion. But ok.
      I hesitate whether to buy this keyboard or maybe Keychron K4v2. Both of them lack something that the other has. GMMK2 has no bluetooth, but it does have the PrintScreen button, and Keychron has bluetooth, but it lacks PrintScreen button.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kryzerk9203 Fair critique, and I try to be more specific than that, typically.
      The tougher thing about it is that, as a tradeoff, the GMMK2 offers per-key remapping through Glorious Core, and once you have it all set up you can uninstall Core and it should all work right from now on. That said it looks like the Keychron board is compatible with software called "SharpKeys" that allows you to re-map any keyboard's keys, but I have no experience with it to tell you how clunky it is or how much system overhead it produces. That said, if it works well enough, you could just re-map one of the keys on the Keychron to be what you want it to be, and since it has one more key than the GMMK2 AND is slightly more compact, you can basically match the mapping of GMMK2, just with the addition of the key you want.

  • @Alexandra-Rex

    I do prefer a thick wrist rest, so that my wrist is on the level of where the switches stick out of the keyboard body, and as flat a keyboard as possible. Why try to bend your hand up more than needed?
    I'm looking at this and the Keychron Q5 QMK 96% keyboards.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The V5 is probably a more direct competitor to the GMMK2 in terms of price and feature set. Main diff being a steel tray mount plate rather than an integrated Alu plate, plus the V5 can be had with a knob AND has a VERY shallow typing angle: www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v5-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard
      That said, if you've the budget for it, the Q5 is just better in every way.

    For the switches on numpad section I just take off half the stabilizer to reach it😂

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's a thing you can do, and for most hotswap boards you just leave those for last and just remove the switches along with the plate, then remove them from the plate without the stabs being in the way... just annoying to navigate with this sort of integrated plate design, and then having those silly twist tabs in the plate that secure the PCB to the plate.

    I have the full keyboard now for.. a half year and I'm very happy about it :D (Came from Razer)
    Build Quality is very good and I love the Fox switches and Sound..
    Only down sideis my space bar Stabilizers on the left side.. i think they are the problem why my space on the left side is a little bit.. rattly.. noisy.. a little bit lose i think (on the right side its perfect, or middle)
    So I will buy maybe the Glorious Stabilizers V2 and put these in and hope it fixed it o:
    And i dont have the problem that my keys on the botton are a other sound tbh, or not too much.. Maybe they change it in production ? idk

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would avoid GSv2 stabilizers. They don't grip the wire tightly enough at the housing, leaving them to rattle ceaselessly. I'd actually recommend Drop Phantom plate mount stabs for a GMMK2 board, they fit my GMMK2 96% really well and tune nicely.

      @Psyko_Blood ah, not in the states. Maybe try to find Gateron or TX plate-mounts, then, they're also pretty good, but you may need to grab more than one set to fit a 96% GMMK2 with TX (likely a TKL kit and a 2U kit).

    I'm glad I didn't get the stock switches. There seems to be a lot of ping with them. The Oil Kings sound so much better. They give a creamy sound in conjunction with an XDA profile key cap.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Having used Oil Kings, there's a few differences I've observed:
      1. My batch of OK's was grotesquely over lubed or inconsistently lubed.
      2. The stock spring for OK's is WAY better than the Glorious stock spring, but that can be cured with a bit of oil or donut dipping if need be.
      3. Sound differences are driven largely by housing composition: Foxes have an all-polycarb (I believe) housing, which naturally produces a deeper, more muted sound. OK's having a full nylon housing will produce a louder, more expressive sound.
      My JWICK Blacks have a very similar sound as compared to OK's, but spring weight & design, plus lube type and application are what's driving differences there. What plate are you using with your OK's, and in what board? XDA is a fun profile, easy compatibility since everything is the same height!

    • @Madblaster6
      @Madblaster6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheManicGeek I'm using the GMMK 2 stock, with stock Oil Kings. After doing a ton of research it seemed like a great option if I didn't want to spend the extra on lube and save a lot of time. The XDA caps were used because I have large hands and don't lift high when typing. It helps a lot. Honesty if I didn't need a numpad, I would have gone with the QK65. I really like the marbled sound. However with my current configuration I would say it's a low creamy thock.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Madblaster6 ah yes, you totally mentioned that 😂. Another solid factory lubed switch is actually Gateron's own Pro line (Yellows, Browns, etc). It's done in the same fashion as Oil Kings, only with a Polycarb top housing instead for "dat RGB", but still has the same polished internals and updated molds.
      For uniform profiles, have you tried DSA before? It's slightly shorter than XDA, and has a more spherical concavity in the top by comparison.

    • @TheManicGeek
      @TheManicGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch and cap combo doesn't do this board any favors, but neither does being a board with an integrated tray mount plate. I'm actually using it with silent Linears (Bobagums) rn so I can use Cherry profile caps and NOT have to worry about how it sounds lol.
