When I started making this video, I thought it would be like, 3 or 4 mins! There's a lot ot talk about this here as its a fairly in depth mechanic, with a lot going on to it. At least this should make the eventual tips video not 40+ minutes long! If you are interested only in the option select part, there is a time stamp to it in the video description.
rooflemonger hey roof the 214 version is cancellable into variation before the first hit. It’s quite useful for block strings because you can go straight to overhead/low.
It's incredible that you are such an experienced player that you can breakdown the tech's of new chars just a day after their release and make such good content for people to learn Thank you so much
One thing as a little quality of life tip is that the medium follow ups do more damage than the lights, even if you open up with a light. That way, you can squeeze the maximum possible damage out of a combo
Okay I’ve played around with the move a bit more, so I’ve more or less figured out the properties of each version, so I’ll put the pros and cons of each, and where they should probably be used more: Light follow ups: Pros - the light follow ups are slightly faster than the medium ones. The light also seems to be the only one that the strategy mentioned in the video works consistently with. Cons - the light follow ups do less damage than the medium. (The damage scaling seems to be the same for the two, and if there is a difference it’s too little to make a negative impact on the damage of a combo) Medium follow ups: Pros - more damage than the light Cons - Slower. This also means that during longer combos, when hitstun decay starts to really kick in, the opponent will be able to tech out of the medium follow ups first. Usage for each: Light - for the light, there’s two main areas you will want to use them: blockstrings, as they are harder to react to and again, the above mentioned strategy won’t work otherwise, and late into combos to avoid whiffing any of the hits. Medium follow ups: these should be used to pump out the maximum possible damage in a combo, or occasionally in blockstrings to mess with your opponent’s head. This doesn’t apply to the openers, as those are pretty self explanatory. (You can use medium follow ups to a light opener and vice versa, just like with Blue Vegeta and Yamcha)
Gotta say rooflemonger these videos (even tho i only own Zamasu) really helped me out. This is my first fighting game outside less than 100 matches in mk9 and x and yesterday I finally became a SSJ God after about 600 games (and 430 wins). With the last 3 matches winning against a ssj god and even blue, in which I was able to win by understanding the dlc characters based on these vids.

Just in case nobody else has found it yet, I got a piece of 17 tech that could be useful in better hands than my own. When you have an opponent cornered and you the wall jump above their head, if you call an assist just as 17 touches the wall, your assist will appear behind them and push them forward ever so slightly. So, if you call an assist like android 16, they'll be in massive hit stun, which'll give you time to lay down a second assist to lock them down, possibly leaving them susceptible to a Instant air dash cross up or an empty Instant air dash into low. I'm not good enough to put this to good use, so I figure getting it out there is the best I can do. Sorry if this is common knowledge already, but I havent seen it mentioned anywhere yet.
dont remember if you covered it, but the medium steps can be feinted like change the future and the exbackstep can be immediately cancelled into a driver move to avoid the crossup to throw in more mindgames if your opponent is watching for ex or whatnot
If I had to compare 17 to another ArcSys character, it'd be Slayer, or I guess Azrael.. Mainly due to the backstep in his rekka chain. Thank goodness he doesn't have the teleport dash though. However, it about looks like it was added to be more of a hindrance than a tool, unlike how Slayer's Dandy Step is actually super useful. It's worth noting that 17 will like flashy assists, for the extremely dirty reason that they obscure what he's doing, making it that much harder to tell what he's doing. Change the Future from Trunks is a good example. My team selection for him being 17, Trunks, and Yamcha.
I’m new to DBFZ and fighting games in general. I was hopelessly confused about how to use 17s rekka system until I found this video. Makes much more sense now. Thanks!
Roof, you are easily the best DBFZ TH-camr working. 17's driver system freaked me out but you managed to break it down in such a way that I can see giving him a proper try!
The Sean Connery Experience we’ll only the 1st comment didn’t age well. He (17) is actually a solid character choice (POINT) & in any other Fighting Game he’d be a Top Tier Character Easily!! Sigh, but this is DBFZ where Mashing is an actual “GOOD SYSTEM MECHANIC” & all characters must Win the SAME EXACT WAY. With that being said, there isn’t much diversity between the cast..... For Example, Frieza should be a “ZONER” (we clearly see that was their approach when making the character) but a SIMPLE SYSTEM MECHANIC, that EVERY character in the game has, BEATS his ENTIRE move-set. (SD) So you essentially made a “ZONER” that CAN’T do CHIP (significant chip at least) (speaking of Chip one can’t win by chip in this game anyway) but again who’s moves get beaten by a SYSTEM MECHANIC that every character in the Game has (Old Man Roshi isn’t out yet), & when it’s all said & done The Entire Cast has to Win the same exact way. The Game needs more diversity, IMO it’s too True to the Manga/Anime in being a Str8 BRAWL! Still a FUN game but can be improved!
rooflemonger I think I'm the first to discover it, I made a video on my channel and a post on reddit ! I thought it was cool enough so when you were live I told you to try it. o/
Good video on his rekkas! There's a couple things that you kinda missed. On the medium version of both his rekkas, you can cancel after he does the run forward as another option, kinda like how trunks can with change the future. And with his backstep, you kinda mentioned it but he doesn't have to do the initial punch, he can go into whatever followup he wants first
Great breakdown. I like how 17’s Driver beats a lot of specials. It beat a Mystic ball while I was running arcade mode. Excited to see some dirty mix-ups during the next tournaments
Something to note is that while it might not be an OS, doing the normal barrier after the overhead still protects against 2H. But if you do that and they DONT 2H im pretty sure it still comes out and you probably get full comboed.
Incorrect, the normal barrier works just fine as an option select, it doesn't come out if they don't 2H and it still beats 2H if they do. Don't need to burn bar for this.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but the barrier followup can be followed up by 214L/M/H to continue combos or get around being punished (like by Broly's super armor).
I tried him out online without any training mode and i got my ass blasted, as expected lmao. Was fun tho jumping around off the walls Also feels bad for vegeta blue. 17 is a real rekka character
Thanks for the video. I like the mechanic but I feel like its heavily demanding for assists, as else the gaps are just too easy to punish in a blockstring when trying to use the overhead but the option select is amazing actually!
One thing I want to say is the you actually don't have to let the first hit go, if you mash the attack button you'll actually cancel the dash into the mid rekka hit. This is actually relevant because its slightly faster than standard first hit, and can get more combos in. For instance, you can 5m > 2m > 3h > 5h > qcb light then cancel the dash into the mid hit and it combos, where it won't if you don't cancel.
another important thing to note is that is the barrier is triggered and the hit lands, or you ex and the hit lands, it doesn't end the rekka, you can actually continue into any unused rekka button, including other s bound attacks
sorry to split up the responses like this because I'm bad, but other option selects include, if your opponent reflects your overhead, you can cancel into the backwards wallbounce as you are being pushed away. This lets you both safely escape any attempted followup and re-engage if your opponent overextends for the punish. Secondly ex barrier also beats vanish. 17 will turn around for the counter blast
i am not patience enough to learn those , i dont know why i bought the dlc pack because my mains are the ones i did choose day one and i become pink and 700 k ... but i will use ur video to learn some more , hope season 2 players are more fit for me
Your by far my go to for dbfz info and tips. Very comprehensive. So roof I have a request on something you've said numerous times. Can you make a video on why vegeta blue sucks. Like the beerus video you did
I think the first hit of these two specials can actually be changed. When I was using 17 I did his qcc and square and immediately went down square and I got the low as the first hit instead of his usual first hit
How does option select work? Like how can I discover option select for other characters cause i know frieza has one but i don't know how to consistently do it.
Lightningbolt72 it’s basically finding a single move with a shitload of utility. The easiest example is the virtua fighter low punch. It’s the fastest normal for every character. This allows you to get free damage against slow moves, safely poke because of how fast it is, setup for other moves like while standing options command grabs and akiras shenanigans , and because of the fact you can only grab someone when they’re blocking or doing nothing this makes it safer to throw this move out a lot of the time than it would have been to block.
Yeah, but that was crucial because on the ground, 17 did the most damage. I watch some of Max stream and when he discovered it left the enemies on the ground instead of airbone, he was like freaked out.
I put forth a few ideas in the recent beerus vid from a few days back, but I am in no way shape or form an authority on beerus so I wouldn't really know the best ideas.
Can you please turn on the button notations at the very beginning? It makes combos easier to understand. I don't know why people always turn them off in tutorial vids. Just leave them permanently on
I absolutely can't stand them being on as I find them massively distracting. I turn them on when essential and thats it. There is no combos to be shown off in this video anyways, in the actual combo video notations are on from the start.
Thanks for the video! So what I don’t get is what do you do once you are actually landing the hits of the rekka? Because once you do that final hit, the string is over and you can’t land a launcher, so do you NEED assists for that?
Sorta kinda, in the corner you don't and ex beam lets you re-do stuff in corner and I have seen some fancier stuff. I don't fully undrstand his combo structure yet though I won't lie.
Given the extra time, and subsequent higher danger of getting hit, what’s the benefit of doing the quarter circle back or “step back” version of his special, does it do more damage?
So what exactly is the difference between the QCF and QCB versions of this move? Like why isn't the QCB version just a different attack? How do you know which version to use? Sorry I am not experienced with fighting games.
Can’t test it because I’m at work, but if 17 is sparking can he IAD off the fake out rekka and cross them up or no? Just wondering how much this character gets to be a blender in SB.
Not sure about chasing the smash, but yeah: mid-combo, mid-air, mid-rekka (using L/R+S); it's all good. The trick is going to be making proper use of this information.
@@darkthunder301 ? Not sure what you're asking. You can homing dash after the wall jump or cancel into the move after the HD connects on block/hit. I thought you meant using the wall jump after a smash, which you can do; there just isn't a way to connect anything off it.
i'm confused as to how the hell the ex shield can come out depending on if the opponent attacks because that makes no sense to me. i'm talking about the option select came someone explain that to me please
Considering what a big part 17's barriers played in the tournament of power, I'm honestly really disappointed that this is the direction they went with him. Just another misstep that makes this game less awesome than it could be.

I find it funny how he says in the game that he might be stronger than goku now. Although that was already in my headcannon until goku goes ui
You don't have to press 2H on rekka over head. You can just press S (special). It gets the same results.
I can imagine someone making the wall bounce into kid buus assist and getting and overhead low mixup boi
Also the first hit of the rekka was an anti air. That means it will beat super dash and leave it on the group instead.
Yep I forgot to mention it here but that is the case! I did bring it up in the original breakdown vid from the stream.

Can’t test it because I’m at work, but if 17 is sparking can he IAD off the fake out rekka and cross them up or no? Just wondering how much this character gets to be a blender in SB.
You actually can get the EX not to crossup if you press L fast enough
What’s a could string to go into after you confirm the hit from one of the rekkas and after you finish the rekka chain
Are you sure that the option select may use the H input? I think that it could also works with the S input isn't it?
Every time someone tries to overhead wit 17 I just uppercut the shit outta em lmao
17 is what UMVC3 Iron Fist should've been
Can 17 do the wall dives in the air, mid combo, or use it to chase the opponent after launching them?
Not sure about chasing the smash, but yeah: mid-combo, mid-air, mid-rekka (using L/R+S); it's all good. The trick is going to be making proper use of this information.
@@LazyProphet42 the thing you do after you down heavy someone, or try to get past ki blasts. I think it's a super dash...
EDIT: Homing dash, that's it
@@darkthunder301 ?
Not sure what you're asking. You can homing dash after the wall jump or cancel into the move after the HD connects on block/hit.
I thought you meant using the wall jump after a smash, which you can do; there just isn't a way to connect anything off it.
@@LazyProphet42 Ah, ok. Thx!
I play on keyboard and my D button keeps sticking so I can't finish 17's final combo mission. 😢
@Jesse Mathis I already have a controller. I switched to keyboard on purpose because I can't do IAD's on pad and a keyboard is a poor man's MixBox.
:(
If they gave this moveset to 18 she would just be noel vermilion
Are you related to the TH-cam Foodwishes ??
I get that almost daily
Can I ask where is an enlarged version of the thumbnail flow chart?
uhh, randomly found on google image search for flow chart
i'm confused as to how the hell the ex shield can come out depending on if the opponent attacks because that makes no sense to me. i'm talking about the option select
came someone explain that to me please
Also, the starter is an anti-air.
Zamasu vs Android 17 vs Cooler
Which character takes the longest time to master
Well since 17 is still super unexplored right now, I gotta go with him.
Does the OS still work even if you do the fake out?
I'm assuming everything is still true for s3?
yeah everything in this video for the most part holds true, theres been some small buffs to it though
Considering what a big part 17's barriers played in the tournament of power, I'm honestly really disappointed that this is the direction they went with him. Just another misstep that makes this game less awesome than it could be.
