ABOUT CHICAGO FIRE
From renowned Emmy Award-winning executive producer Dick Wolf ("Law & Order" brand) and co-creator Derek Haas, the writer behind "3:10 to Yuma," comes Season 8 of "Chicago Fire." The family inside Firehouse 51 knows no other way than to lay it all on the line for each other. Capt. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) leads the Truck Company and brash Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) runs the Rescue Squad. The firehouse also includes Battalion Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), a fireman's fireman. Paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) returns alongside seasoned veteran Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and Randy "Mouch" McHolland (Christian Stolte), as well as resourceful firefighter Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). I found it odd that Cruz receives a ton of orders from fire departments all over the country, yet the CFD themselves apparently never invest in the Slamigan, despite its usefulness and the fact that it would be a great PR opportunity for them. (Using a tool created by one of their own firefighters and such)
Often, big departments can be slow to change, while smaller ones pick up innovation faster as it's easier to roll out when you don't have to re-train, say, 3000 firefighters. NYC, Houston and (IIRC) San Fran still use leather helmets; SF still makes their own wooden ladders too.
It was the same thing in New York with the original Halligan- FDNY originally didn't make their own to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest, while firefighters in NY bought their own Halligans.

@@FortunaFortesJuvat and dont forget funding, properly run volutering stations sometimes have insane funding pulled together. While big departments like the CFD need to allocate the money they get from the city.
@@minecraftfirefighter And volunteer firefighters only would have to order 1 or 2 of these new products. While a huge fire department that is city wide would have to order in the hundreds. That's more of an investment.

No wonder it didn't work, it was just a piece of metal fitted on the end of a wood shaft. In fact, it looks like it just slid off, as if the only thing holding it was some glue, no splint or wedge to hold it in place. No, something tells me they didn't properly stresstest it. And question 2 is: who designed the Halli Hammer? Was it someone with lots of experience in the applicable field, or was it designed by a bunch of designers with budget and appearances in mind, and no real knowledge about things such as force, material stress, structural complexity limits (How complex the complete object can be. How many different parts are in the product, and what the weakest link is), and functionality?

@@hammerbro1947 I know, and that's why it's infuriating. They make a copy that isn't even well made. If it failed on duty, people could die. If that happens, well, lawsuits will be the least of their (The makers of the Hali Hammer) problems. It also shows how all good ideas will spawn copies, clones and alternatives that will flood the market, and make it hard to choose the right tool. It's lucky it failed then during demo. I'm not a firefighter, but I legit want a Slamigan. It just seems like a useful to to have, just in case

In my experience more often than not it's the professional or journeyman/master craftsman that designs new tools for their particular trade. So firefighters inventing a tool born of need is not completely un heard of. Unrelated Railroad conductor came up with what they call a "break stick" to reach high break wheels on certain rolling stock.

They can try, but they've lost interest and faith in their product by showing that they don't know what they're talking about as well as embarrassing themselves by showing off a poorly designed prototype that clearly isn't fit for the role it was designed for.
Who would you trust? A group of experienced firefighters with the proper knowledge of how the tool should work (hence the use of proper materials that are resilient to the stresses applied to them, as well as a proper demonstration by a trained professional) or a group of engineers who only care about the money?
(It's said in the following episodes that Cruz is flooded with orders after his demonstration and his supply can't meet the demand)
