    Do I purchase "milk kefir grains" even if I need it to be dairy gluten and vegan friendly? I understand there may be trace (hopefully trace amounts of lactose or dairy) Or do I buy water kefir grains and put it in coconut milk?

    • @chrispicakes6577
      @chrispicakes6577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can get milk kefir grains, but it would not be vegan friendly. Some people are comfortable getting milk kefir grains but only using plant milk to ferment. They may not survive though.
      Some people successfully add 1/2 tsp date paste to 4 cups plant milk to feed milk kefir grains. The grains survive but do not multiple and the bacteria/probiotics may change if you do not replenish in cow milk occasionally.
      Another option is using water kefir grains , fermenting with sugar water, and using a little bit of water kefir liquid to ferment plant milk.
      This will leave you with a different kind of drink though with different benefits.

      Yes you can use almond milk but your grains will need to be refreshed in organic dairy or organic soya, since almond milk doesn't have much food for the grains & they will deteriorate over time. Coconut milk is good too but tins not cartons. Also watch out for additives, emulsifiers and sweeteners which can damage the grains. Stick with organic where possible. 😄

      The kefir community breaks down the lactose (milk sugar) into kefiran, which is the main component of the kefir grains, as well as acids and other components. I suppose you could wean the culture off the lactose sugars. Soy milk contains different sugars like fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose or maltose. Lactose is normally broken down into glucose and galactose, so by using soy milk you may just be skipping the conversion step from lactose to glucose/galactose.

      The grains tend to deteriorate over time in plant milk and they don't grow, but they will make decent kefir for a few months. If you can't refresh them in dairy you could add another source of food for them to pep them up. A teaspoon of inulin powder works well or a teaspoon of organic mollases but that makes the kefir a muddy brown colour! Hope that helps. 😁

    Can we tranform cow milk kefir into soya milk kefir? :)

      Yes you can but remember to use organic soya with no additives. Sojade, Provamel & Alpro are all good.

      Hi again! I tried to do it but it's very watery... Is it normal? How often should I change the soya milk? I left it for 2-3 days 😅🙈
      Thanks in advance! 😊

    Actually Kefir is not a probiotic its a PREbiotic, because it predigests for us. Doesnt make it less good, but I also just heared about it yesterday. :)

      Kefir contains upwards of 40 probiotic strains of bacteria & yeast, it is the MOST probiotic food on the planet! The probiotics do predigest the milk, making it easier to absorb.

    No sugar?

    • @janiceclyne7063
      @janiceclyne7063 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No none required, the organic soya milk sustains the milk kefir grains, but you could add sugar if you like or some inulin powder, which tastes sweet but is actually a prebiotic fibre!

      @@janiceclyne7063 but there is no food in sugarfree soymilk for the kefir...

      @@majvlierop There is no lactose for sure but I make consistently thick & creamy soya kefir without adding sugar. The grains must adapt to the soya milk. It has to be organic with no additives. It really does work well! 😁

      How long do your kefirgrains last? It seems almost impossible to me that they survive without any food to ferment

  • @WCiossek

    Unfortunately, the milk kefir grains only grow in animal milk, which I cannot drink because of the animal proteins and fats, as animal foods of all kinds are very poisonous and deadly for me. These kefir grains cannot grow and multiply in plant juices such as soy and coconut milk. Although they ferment those juices, they die after a few batches.

      That is not my experience so long as the plant milks don't contain emulsifiers and preservatives which damage the grains! My kefir grains make delicious soya kefir for months on end. They don't grow like kefir grains in their natural food which is dairy milk but they do make kefir!!
