Many years ago I took an introductory human development course from Dr. Nelson. That course literally changed the trajectory of my life as he talked about healthy family relationships and I learned that there was a better way to raise a family and how we treat our children does matter. It was a stepping stone I needed. He began the class sharing a story about how parents had treated a child, the dysfunction in that family setting. It was almost as if he was talking about my life and the dysfunction in my upbringing, which I'm sure is the norm for millions. I had never even considered there was a different better way for a family to be. Here I am 15 years later with 6 kids, a lot of personal healing along the way, and doing my best to raise a loving family built on healthy attachment. Dr. Nelson is one of the people who changed my life. I love these chapters and podcasts and their focus on family relationships and human development. Thanks for all your efforts. What a positive difference you are making.

Same here. Child development from Dr. Nelson changed my life. I wish every parent would take a child development course. It makes such a huge difference in how I understand and treat my children.

29:09 thank you for addressing being an introvert. Much needed.

When I told someone I was an introvert, he challenged me which made me think. He said introverts and extroverts are constructs invented by social scientists (like psychologists) in order to place people in different boxes. I think he’s right. I actually have characteristics of both types and so does everyone else. Just sharing.

@maryanneprater-doty5178 ...I have always known I am an introvert. And to my delight, one of my traits from my DNA is that I am an introvert. Knowing what I am has helped me tremendously and has really helped my extrovert family members understand me and not be impatient when I need quiet space to recharge.

I can be an extrovert when it’s part of my job, but I am drained of energy afterwards, and I need quite alone time to recharge. An extrovert gets energy from being with people. This isn’t a social construct.

I have a husband and son who are text book introverts, and your explanation was SO spot on! They are not shy, they just have to choose and adjust to feel comfortable around others. Thank you.

I just found out this morning that my grandson (Orren Jack) is in the same house/apartment in Virginia as your son John. They are not companions but sharing living space! I was excited! I love followHIM and listen every week with scriptures open, taking notes. I feel the past 4 years with followHim has deepened my testimony tremendously. I'm a convert of 40ish years but the past 4 have been life changing, learning so much that I never would have gotten on my own. Thank you so much for all you do!

I love his acknowledging Mormon’s including characters who played a smaller but important role in the stories. I agree that that speaks to his being observant of everyone.

35:35 It doesn't surprise me that Elder Gong would do that. He exudes such genuine love and concern, especially for those who are down.

I want so much to be like Brother Nelson and my Savior Jesus Christ . It is so very difficult to not be resentful and angry when injustices are happening at every turn. Stand in Holy places and think Celestial, we are all doing the best we can.

I know what you mean. And trying to be patient with children when they ask repeatedly for something you have said no to a million times makes a person lose their cool. Trying hard to be like Mormon and Jesus...

23 years ago I sat down on my first day of college in Dr. Nelson's Child Development class. Who would have known that I had sat down next to my future husband. I'll be forever grateful for the instruction given during that semester, and am ever more grateful today for the insights he has given both times being on your podcast. On this side of parenting, I certainly wish I had taken better notes back then, so getting these jewels of instruction now is so helpful.

I took Human Development from Dr Nelson! Every day I came out of that class feeling as though I had learned something profound, both intellectually and spiritually. He is intelligent, and even more importanly, unendingly kind and nuanced in his consideration. Also, he's a Star Trek fan!

This is an important discussion about the way our spirits and bodies are intertwined. In Doctrine and Covenants we read that all commandments are spiritual. I now have a greater understanding about the father’s role as protector in the family. As my husband’s partner in leadership, I need to demonstrate the protecting power of righteousness as well.

I live in California. Where we live my kids are of only a handful of active youth in our ward. It's been really hard as they have been going through their teenage yrs to not have other youth in the church that are active to be around and be an example to each other. It doesn't even have to be another country for there to be little support for youth.

Hearing a new perspective of Mormon as the military leader has brought a new depth to why he chose to name his son Moroni. Mormon was unable to reference God or religion to stir the Nephites in battle. I think he probably yearned to be a leader like Moroni. In the words of John G Bytheway, for Moroni, faith was job number one. It was far more important than all the rest of the defenses.

As the mother of three autistic kiddos, I find the heavy lean into nurture thing absolutely bizarre. These tiny kids came with their own personalities and ideas over which I have some ability to direct but absolutely no ability to control. My 10yo daughter is and always had been a perfectionist-- no matter how many times we focus on praising effort, she feels it isn't good enough. She was super concerned about what the other *Sunbeams* were going to think of her Christmas dress, and now over compensates that fear by acting out as the (and these are her words) "weird kid" because then the reactions of others are more predictable.
My 6yo suffers from the Nephi problem. He's the exact same size as his 7yo older brother-- who's disability is severe. He is incredibly articulate and expressive, very quick with academics. So it is hard for everyone to remember-- particularly when his older brother cannot even dress himself-- that he IS only 6.
I think we lean so hard into the nurture thing because that gives the illusion of control. "If I can get parenting right, my kids will be fine". But that isn't true. Even God, THE perfect parent, had 1/3 of His children chose to walk away, because of their nature.

Concerning violence...when preparing for a gospel doctrine class on Noah and the destruction of people because of violence, I prayed to understand it. The answer I received was that violence is so very wrong because it destroys agency. I cannot think of any example where violence does not remove agency of the victims.

HOW do we send them to the Lord? I really wish I had examples. I can’t think of what would be different than just teaching them to pray and read their scriptures. What is the difference between?

I'm wondering why so many people seem to forget that Amaron was a prophet? I don't believe that Amaron chose Mormon; I believe God chose Mormon and told Amaron through revelation. To me, it is no different from when Samuel chose David and not his brothers; Samuel didn't choose - God did!

Haha, Hank. Sorry, you won’t ever be an introvert, and that’s okay. Introverts have strengths and weaknesses, and extroverts have strengths and weaknesses. You bring many gifts to this world in the way you are, and we all bear with your weaknesses 🤪 (there’s the proof thy I’m an extrovert too - I do NOT think carefully through what I say 😅) introversion/extroversion is a nature we come with, and what a beautiful variety God has placed on earth. And it’s our duty to learn to love them all ❤

100%. I'm an introvert and, I've been told, a good listener-- but that skill doesn't do anyone any good if no one is talking. I like hanging around extroverts, they bring so much energy and have a knack for making everyone feel welcome.

I wish there were more mother/daughter stories in the Book of Mormon. We seem to be excluded.
