  • Wow. Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for these two stunning choices. Just SUCH good music, man. George was so talented. He had so many songs ready to go by the time his first album came out and every one I have heard have been bangers... and these 2 live versions are just sublime. He had everyone here! And... if I end up making money on this video, all of the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF just like the proceeds from this album continue to do. I will also be making a donation equal to what was given to me to do this.

Great Concert/Album. May be the very first gathering of musicians to raise money for a cause??. Great performances, great back stories. Would Clapton show up, he was in his drug fog phase, would Dylan go on stage, he was having stage fright issues. George held it all together (without John & Paul) - Leon Russell &Billy Preston were huge presences- & Claudia Lennear (Leon's background singer and Ms Brown Sugar) is the prominent female vocal at the show.

"Beware of Darkness" - always good advice. As I recall Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso and George's friend and mentor, asked him to do a benefit for Bangladesh. The Bengal region of India was very prosperous in the mid-18th century. Then it was colonized by Britain. Today it is among the poorest places on Earth

There's a depth of soul and...spiritual elegance to George's music that never fails to fascinate me. To me, his arc was the mist interesting in the Beatles; John and Paul were already head-turning songwriters when they hit, but we got to watch George become their equal, and we fans got to go with hin on his journey. Great soul.

He asked John Lennon to be part of the show. But John declined, saying he didn't want to distract or take away the spotlight from George. He also truly respected the idea of the benefit. Hats off to Lennon for not getting in the way. Unfortunately it took years to get the proceeds to the people who needed it.

What a special man - my favorite Beatle. Hearing this was the soul booster I really needed right now. Lee, his solo song co-written with Jeff Lynne, “When we was Fab,” is on a par with “Glass Onion.” Both are incredible pop songs with lyrics that wryly and cleverly dissect Beatlemania and Beatles “lore.” ❤

Beware of Darkness is my favorite George song (musically and lyrically). I still get goosebumps every time I hear the concert version. Epic concert, first of its kind. I was 12 when the film of the concert was released in theaters. Sat through it twice, then got the album. Definitely try to watch the concert-film -- I just did a search and found the full concert on Reddit. The musicianship on that stage at that time was incomparable, from the guitars, bass, keys (Bill and Leon) and horns, to Jim and Ringo side by side on drums! And the backup singers were fantastic! If you don't know Leon Russell check him out on youtube and Wiki. You also see the resurgence of Clapton here. If you don't know the history between George and Eric you can read about it online... Thanks, Lee, for doing these! Cheers!

I’ve seen an interview with George Harrison, where he said at age 12 traditional religion in England was BS.
And some interview you can hear him talk about some of the things that explains his spirituality. Because he firmly believed that the body ages, but souls are eternal. And if you listen to the lyrics, he has a lot of things to say about what he thinks about organized religion such as one line from a song called “Awaiting On You All” the Pope owns 51% of General Motors. It’s that English humor. You can see it in one of his lyrics, by chanting the names of the Lord. “Names” plural ! And the interchanging, Harry Krishna, repetition in his song, my Sweet Lord.
His song “Give me love” (peace on Earth) is one of his most beautiful works of musical art.

Every culture and religion has a different description of the same.... "thing". And then we proceed to do what we do best to those who don't agree with our definition of the "thing" throughout history... whatever that "thing" is. It probably isn't a big fan of what we as a species have done, lol

If you haven't yet, maybe you'd like to react to George's song "Dark Horse", it was what certain commentators would refer to him as. despite to the fact that he had been dealing with laryngitis when he recorded it, it was still a hit for him, it made the top 20 list in the US. Thanks for this reaction, George deserved better than he got, but hey, when The Beatles broke up, at least he had all that great music that only he alone could take credit for.

I wasn't lucky enough to be at Madison Square Garden to see these shows. But I did see him in concert a little over a year later in Tulsa. (BTW the other singer you asked about "soft shoe shuffle" was Leo Russell) That concert was called Hari's On Tour Express. The Beatles had great marketing skills. His first publishing company was called "Harrisongs" and Ringo Starkey's was called "Startling Music." John had Lenono music. Paul was MPL (McCartney Productions Limited). George's production company was later called "Living in the Material World Foundation."

George was persuaded to do the Concert for Bangladesh by his good friend, the sitarist Ravi Shankar, who also appeared in the concert. George had a lot of doubts about stepping out as the front man for such a show, but he did a great job. Among the many guest and supporting artists, Leon Russell was there manning the piano and providing vocals. You should definitely check out Leon's featured performance, a medley of The Rolling Stones hit “Jumpin' Jack Flash” and the old R&B song “Youngblood.” Great stuff.

The other singer in Beware of Darkness is Leon Russell. Another great spiritual song by George Harrison Awaiting On You All.

George was sued by a record company whose female singing group had a hit song in the sixties called He’s So Fine. They said George took the three notes from He’s So Fine and used them for My Sweet Lord. The court ruled in George’s favor. You can read about the case.

Why did he have to pay over half a million dollars if the court ruled in his favor?

I saw him a few years after this concert on the ‘Dark Horse’ tour in 1974. Not the all star lineup that Bangladesh had but a great concert nonetheless. The only former Beatle I ever saw live.

Bangladesh, officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh, is a country in South Asia. It is the eighth-most populous country in the world and is among the most densely populated countries with a population of nearly 170 million in an area of 57,320 sq mi. Bangladesh shares land borders with India to the north, west, and east, and Myanmar to the southeast. To the south, it has a coastline along the Bay of Bengal. It is narrowly separated from Bhutan and Nepal by the Siliguri Corridor, and from China by the mountainous Indian state of Sikkim in the north.
