Yes here he smokes, and later had this superb slide guitar playing that none of his contemporaries bothered with much. Ha shas received 6 Grammys during his solo career.

They intentionally wrote the kinds of tunes that would sell, they were NOT just a "boy band" as so many know it all jerks call them for their early days in the national spotlight. they were tough and they paid their dues for years before fame.

1st version, they are being "directed" in the studio. For the 2nd version, they are relaxed, sitting back and playing this almost as a lark, in the middle of tons of ten second covers and pieces of old songs from the 50s, that they would spout off for fun.

(I may have a few words wrong here but you can see how hectic their schedule was in 64 with several concerts a day, radio interviews and a few minutes granted for studio time plus travel time. They worked like dogs.) After he got his plectrum they tried again but it broke down and George Martin was able to piece the good parts together for Anthology

Try a listen to Anthology 1 where they were trying to record this on a break in touring appearances and radio shows, but it kept breaking down. Then George Martin was able to piece parts of two attempts together to make a complete version (which was never released) so we can hear what it would have sounded like in 64 if they ever did a complete version. John wrote this years before the 64 attempts.

BTW the "Naked" album (from 2003) , Paul had organized is superior to the official Let It Be album. Paul had all that Phil Spector over production stripped off.

There are two main things I enjoy about this song, one is when they gradually pick up the tempo towards the end of the song, and the other is listening to all four of them (plus a few misc extras) singing together. I find there is something particularly joyful, being that all of their vocals seem to blend perfectly to create a unique resonance. The best example of this is on Yellow Submarine.

It was common for them to contribute to one another's songs. Like John's masterpiece A Day in the Life had a middle part contributed by Paul.
Mostly thanks to Sir George Martin - what a talent in production! None of the Beatles liked the rushed Spector version, but Paul was especially unhappy about his Long and Winding Road song. Luckily, all the excess noise got stripped away from John's Across the Universe too!
Paul wasn't an original member. He joined later. John formed the band, and it included his friends from school (the band was named after his school) Pete Shotton, Colin Hanton, Rod Davis, and Len Garry. This was in 1956, and Paul didn't join until July 1957.Then, George joined in early 1958. Stuart Sutcliffe, John's best friend ultimately joined the group (after the other original members left), and he and John came up with the name The Beatles. The Quarrymen even played at the Cavern (before Paul joined) for awhile!

In Let it Be - Naked, 'naked' doesn't mean what you normally think of naked to mean in music. This was Let it Be with the Phil Spector gloss stripped off. I prefer Spector's version. Naked sounds boring and dull to me. The Long and Winding Road sounds a little syrupy but I'm not too into it anyway.
Sorry Lee, but I must disagree with your assessment of the two versions of this song. To me, the difference between the two were akin to night and day. The original version (1963) was flat out missing soul. Paul's bass playing is an entry-level performance; George's guitar solo is rather lame and not very cohesive; John's effort is passable at best; and Ringo's playing is rather basic. And it must be noted: there is no piano accompaniment in that recording. The song lacked energy from start to end and it sounds as though they were ready for a nap. The 1969 version, in contrast, was a complete turn around. My toes automatically start tapping along whenever I hear the newer version due. Ofc, all four Beatles stepped up their effort with a tighter performance and obviously a quicker tempo. Billy Preston's keyboard contribution certainly elevates the song to a higher level. The earlier version was mundane, whereas this one sounded like they were having fun.
Not so much a disagreement as a difference of opinion. :) I like aspects of both versions. The fact that John wrote it when he was 17 is pretty cool too, regardless of what tempo they decided to play it in. The newer version is a throwback to the original they performed in the early days, even as Quarrymen and without Paul on some occasions, I believe.

Guitar strings were heavier early on. Guitarist started using lighter banjo strings until manufacturers caught on.
You should try the heavy version of this song by Laibach. They sneak in the riff from Smoke On The Water at the end of the guitar solo.

@se6369 I'm not claiming it's a masterpiece, but it does contain some entertainment value as far as I'm concerned. It's unreasonable to expect every one of their songs to be topshelf quality.
@lauraallen55 Definitely a Paul song without a doubt. There are two main things I enjoy about this song, one is when they gradually pick up the tempo towards the end of the song, and the other is listening to all four of them (plus a few misc extras) singing together. I find there is something particularly joyful, being that all of their vocals seem to blend perfectly to create a unique resonance. The best example of this is on Yellow Submarine.

Yes, it is a 'Paul' song definitely without a doubt. However, John *did* write the middle part. It was common for them to contribute to one another's songs. Like John's masterpiece A Day in the Life had a middle part contributed by Paul.
I think I'm right in saying, John was 15 when he wrote it.
I read somewhere that he said he was 17, so maybe around when he met Paul?
The Long and Winding Road is one that you'd hear the difference between what the Beatles wanted and what Phil Spectre released.
Paul particularly didn't care for Phil Spector's treatment of his song

@@lauraallen55 I do own the album so I'm well aware of what's changed. I just feel that the Long and Winding Road has the most significant change.
I prefer the Let It Be Naked versions of everything--didn't care much for the Spector production on that album.

Almost 10 years between these versions....Let It Be Naked is so much better than the Specter-produced version, thanks to Paul and George Martin.
Mostly thanks to Sir George Martin - what a talent in production! None of the Beatles liked the rushed Spector version, but Paul was especially unhappy about his Long and Winding Road song. Luckily, all the excess noise got stripped away from John's Across the Universe too!

Paul wasn't an original member. He joined later. John formed the band, and it included his friends from school (the band was named after his school) Pete Shotton, Colin Hanton, Rod Davis, and Len Garry. This was in 1956, and Paul didn't join until July 1957.Then, George joined in early 1958. Stuart Sutcliffe, John's best friend ultimately joined the group (after the other original members left), and he and John came up with the name The Beatles. The Quarrymen even played at the Cavern (before Paul joined) for awhile!

@@sydnoids1 They were the Quarrymen, then Johnny and the Moon Dogs, then the Silver Beatles for a few months, then toured for a bit as Johnny Gentle's Backing Band, then The Beatles.

The naked one is a step or two faster than the first one but yeah for the most part they are identical. The piano was great in the second one

In Let it Be - Naked, 'naked' doesn't mean what you normally think of naked to mean in music. This was Let it Be with the Phil Spector gloss stripped off. I prefer Spector's version. Naked sounds boring and dull to me. The Long and Winding Road sounds a little syrupy but I'm not too into it anyway.
Sorry Lee, but I must disagree with your assessment of the two versions of this song. To me, the difference between the two were akin to night and day. The original version (1963) was flat out missing soul. Paul's bass playing is an entry-level performance; George's guitar solo is rather lame and not very cohesive; John's effort is passable at best; and Ringo's playing is rather basic. And it must be noted: there is no piano accompaniment in that recording. The song lacked energy from start to end and it sounds as though they were ready for a nap. The 1969 version, in contrast, was a complete turn around. My toes automatically start tapping along whenever I hear the newer version due. Ofc, all four Beatles stepped up their effort with a tighter performance and obviously a quicker tempo. Billy Preston's keyboard contribution certainly elevates the song to a higher level. The earlier version was mundane, whereas this one sounded like they were having fun.
Not so much a disagreement as a difference of opinion. :) I like aspects of both versions. The fact that John wrote it when he was 17 is pretty cool too, regardless of what tempo they decided to play it in. The newer version is a throwback to the original they performed in the early days, even as Quarrymen and without Paul on some occasions, I believe.
Sadly, one of my least favorite Beatles tunes.
Even if it’s the worst, still it moves! Beatles have swag❤
