    Fantastic video. The nautical history and knowledge of the pirates was vast, as well as other specialties. People like to imagine pirates as poor, dumb, crooks who were dying of curvy, but when we read about them they are quite smart and hardy cultured people just living in their times trying to get along or find freedom from the tyranny of the King ruled lands. Let us remember them more fondly for their culture and history than hyper violent dirty criminals they are stereotyped as.

    Bust out the sextant. My father taught me how to celestially navigate as a teen before my first long term open ocean voyage. I still break it out. But now we have a nice flatscreen with GPS like on a plane. A little icon of our vessel just creeping along. Auto, my little autopilot working away. Lol

    A wise Old Salt once told me that you can teach a 6 year old how to sail in a day, but seamanship (navigation and all the rest) takes a lifetime to master.

    How? Very carefully I'd guess ... accurate charts were often state secrets and so very valuable.

    Did sailors in this time have superstitions about the stars they used to navigate?

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not sure to what extent but they certainly had superstitions related to the sky. For example the phrase "red sky at night sailors delight, red sky at morning sailors take warning" was used as a way to predict the weather. I'd imagine that some sailors would have taken events, such as shooting stars or eclipses, as harbingers of various things.
      Just like today some would have been more superstitious than others and, as pirate crews were typically quite diverse, various beliefs and superstitions would have been prevalent among them.
