    Salvadore Allende was actually Isabelle's uncle.

      Cousin of her father’s actually. Although her calling him uncle might not be that much of a stretch. Tío/Tía is used pretty commonly in Chile to refer to older family members or family friends (at least from my experience )😊

    I read ‘A Discovery of Witches’ in December, I’m really looking forward to seeing what you think of it! Some bits I loved and other bits annoyed me. I haven’t bought any books this year yet but I have taken three books out of the library: ‘The Night Brother’, which I think is a gothic historical novel set in Victorian Manchester, ‘The Paying Guests’ by Sarah Waters, on Lauren and the Books’ recommendation, and ‘Oh My Gods’, which I reserved as soon as I listened to your podcast episode :)

    • @JeansThoughts

    Could you maybe make a video on how to shop for books in second hand shops? In bookstores everything is sorted, by genre and alphabetically. Also, most books that they sell in bookstores are new(er) releases or popular books in general. However, in second hand shops I usually get lost in the amount of books they have. I cannot scan through every book there is to see if it's good or not. How do you search books? How do you find what you will like? How will you know it's good?

    My first purchases and borrowings were all inspired by you. Browsing in bookshops to escape the Aussie heat, I spotted Weight by Jeanette Winterson and a sale copy of Tower of Thorns by Juliet Marillier. I also picked up a Penguin Moderns edition of Audrey Lorde's essays. Once I realised that Tower of Thorns was the second in the Blackthorn and Grim series, I went online and ordered Dreamer's Pool from my library and picked it last week. So thanks for all the recs!

    I bought The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle a few days ago and am really pleased to hear you enjoyed it so much. I’m also in the middle of an online purchase and am just about to go back to your fantasy reading from last year. There was a series you really enjoyed which I think was Juliette Marrillier? I fancy picking some sort of fantasy up as I’m in a bit of a new year reading slump. Thanks for sharing!

    I *love* Trudi Canavan! I'm a few behind on her most recent series, but Priestess of the White and the rest of that trilogy is great. I read A Discovery Of Witches a while ago and really liked it, but never quite got around to finding the others in that series. I wasn't quite sure about the very ending of Seven Deaths, but I loved the rest of the book so so much. I hope he writes something else soon!

    Had a bit of a chuckle with the Allende thing because I’m watching this from Chile. He wasn’t Isabel Allende’s father though. He was her father’s cousin. She refers to him commonly as her uncle in interviews because that’s pretty common here. It’s good that you’re interested in learning more about Chile. I hope I don’t sound too preachy. Happy reading 😊

    I recently finished reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon which is a middle grade fantasy novel and I absolutely fell in love with it. It's a retelling of the Wizard of Oz story but with Chinese mythology woven into it. Since it's inspired by Chinese mythology, it obviously has dragons in it lol and while I was reading it I was thinkin of how much you'd enjoy this book since you love dragons and fantasy a lot. So I would definetely recommend you that book, I truly believe that it's right up your alley. Much love xo

    My bookish gift cards were spent up just before the new year so I haven't actually purchased any books so far in January! I am using the library a lot though and so far I've read two, Distant Light by Antonio Moresco and Black Dog by Neil Gaiman. I love using my library and I am especially looking out for translated fiction at the moment so I have a few ready to go after my current read.

    The holly black series sounds intriguing! I always love fae stories, hence why one of my first book buys of this year was the folio society edition of How to See Fairies by charles van sandwyk! I've also picked up several books in the Fables graphic novel series (which you should definitely read if you haven't already!!), Melmoth by Sarah Perry, as well as two nonfiction books on the AIDS crisis in america. I'm looking forward to 2019 as a reading year- already 8 books down and most were 4 or 5 star reads!

    I have borrowed three books from my library so far. I read Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman. It was a very quick read which I really enjoyed. I'm almost through The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly. This one is good but a little too young for my taste. I haven't started Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant but am looking forward to reading it. I pick up three of my holds at the library on my day off tomorrow.😁

    The Discovery of Witches is the first of a trilogy I love, but the first half of that first book is a slog to get through. Book 2 in all of it's Elizabethan glory is superb and book 3 is a great finish to the trilogy. Can't wait to get to Marcus's book Time's Convert, just released late in 2018. No new purchases or borrows yet, have finished up borrows and purchases from last year :)

    The first book I've bought this year is How to be Human by Paula Cocozza, which I've started reading. It's somehow not quite what I expected, but I'm getting into it quickly. I've also been loaned Trevor Noah's autobiography Born a Crime, which isn't my usual thing at all but my sister-in law (who's South African) wanted me to read it and it's proving enlightening and entertaining so I'm sticking with it. I've also read a couple of the short stories from Cecilia Ahern's book Roar which were fun/tragic. Three pretty different books!

  • @moonmagister
    @moonmagister 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’d say that ‘Priestess of the White’ is probably one of her weaker books. She tries something with it that just doesn’t seem to click. If you like it or dislike it I’d suggest trying the Black Magician Trilogy, because it’s just, all round, a better constructed series and world!

  • @CharrFrears
    @CharrFrears 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I hope you like Priestess of the White! Definitely a better place to start with Canavan- I would recommend you avoid her Young Adult series though. Nowhere near as good as her adult books.
    Oooo Fires of the Faithful sounds awesome, I can’t wait to hear what you think of that one. So rare to find queer romance in fantasy!

    Conversations with Allende seems like an interesting read. My favorite of all the classes I took at Uni was Political development in Latin America, but I haven't read much about politics in Latin America since. So far in 2019 I've only bought two books (though I'm considering a Bookdepository spree today), The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and The Star Diaries by Stanislaw Lem. I'v really gotten into children's fiction lately, and The Explorer seems like a must read. The only thing I knew about Lem was that he wrote Solaris, but The Star Diaries is soo good. Humorous in a Douglas Adams-esque way, and the stories in the book vary in style and themes, which makes it continuously surprising and fun.

    I got a giftcard for my birthday so the first books I got this year were Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente and Cuneiform by Irving Finkel and Jonathan Taylor (British Museum). I also got Stephen Fry's Mythos as a belated birthday gift yesterday, and bought myself a book about the Amazons and Colm Toibin's House of Names. So lots of ancient history so far! I read A Discovery of Witches last year and it was somehow simultaneously good and bad. I enjoyed parts of it, but also sometimes it's honestly incredibly dumb and/or annoying. I do think I want to continue the series because it definitely has its good parts but I almost quit the first one several times.

    Not really related to this video, but I thought you might like "The mere wife" by Maria Dahvana Headley. It is a retelling of Beowulf where every element has been brilliantly refunctionalized for modern times. Female perspective, class/race/sexuality/gender struggles, Beowulf is not even the hero. It does use disfigurement in place of the original's monstrosity though. I also read "The Boneless Mercies", but didn't like it as much.
