My Corolla has the same engine. It never misses a beat.

    Very good work!
And many thanks on this tutorial videos!
I know these works when we do not know the cause, only suppose. These are exploration camps in the garage indeed.
    And descriptions are very helpful!
You finaly made it. I am happy that it made these noises down.
And the whole engine and compartment got clean.
You did it very precisely. Precise build of the engine comes out of dirt.
The piston ring sludge might be major and frequent cause of oil burning in VVTs
Early VVTs are known for this feature.
But VVT is one of the best advancing and reewing engines I rided! (I am no expert)
Smooth reeving and advancing, no gaps.
Maybe more consumption 0,5liter more than 4E-FE
But VVT is substantially more eager. Do you agree?
Low on oil, low lubrication, burning and the sludge comes.
And this is feeding on itself process I guess, self-deppening.
New oil flushed some, but that piston rings stayed clogged.
Knowing this it might be also treated chemically from inside the cylinder.
How many hours have you spent on it? How many days?
How did you manage these amount of parts to remember which is where to put?

Thank you, and thanx for watching my videos :) Your comments encourages me to create more!
Yes I do agree, these engines are loads of fun. VVT system is easy to understand and could be serviced aswell. I haven't checked if there are new seals available, but I haven't heard of those VVT pulleys going bad either.
I work on a daily basis at a Renault dealership, and when the VVT pulleys go bad, I just replace them. I won't even bother to open them up and take a look.
I guess if your engine is affected by this problem, it is hard to treat it without opening the engine up and cleaning these parts. But you might be able to prevent the problem if you shorten the service intervals and choose the moments to rev the engine.
Oh, I haven't kept track of the time, i can estimate very roughly: 1 evening after work on troubleshooting, 1 evening after work on removal, 6-8 hours on dismantle -> cleaning -> putting it together, one day in a weekend to put it back in the car and troubleshooting/fixing that last issue. But the time I spent is spread out over the course of about 2 months.
Well, I'm not sure what to answer to that. I try to learn how it all works before I remove the parts. The basics are the same in all engines from all manufacturers. It varies very little imo. I just learned the basics, and keeping an open mind when I'm working on cars for variations. Pictures help alot, videos are even better. Internet is a great source for information. There is also a saying "Slower is faster". Don't rush it. Make sure that if it don't work out for you, you have another car to drive, and the project doesn't have to be moved. And one more thing, don't let time run away between times spent working on the project. You will forget important things.
I do forget stuff too. When I do, I take time to relearn the mechanics and I am very patient :)

Is this the restyle model of the E11? The oil consumption is a real problem on these? I found a deal on a 2001/03 model with only 90,000 kms. Do you think it's worth it? Or am I going to get in trouble. I'm not a mechanic, so I will have to trust on one.

Swe, have you managed with the timing chain? It was loosy.
    Have you fix this?
Have you check the chain in the old fashioned way on the tooth-weel?
(before and after maintenance to show the difference
    here is an example:)

was the chain in such bad condition as this bicycle chain?
I go on my bike with so bad chains! but they work anyway, if I do not strain.. :)

A Wrocław Hi! I did not check the condition on the chain. But the noise pretty much went away after cleaning up the engine. The guts in the engine was covered in sludge and my suspicion is that some of the oilpassages were blocked.

... and the clogged piston rings - as you showed..
But this chain was heavily loosen as I saw.
I have changed a timing chain in Mercedes 190E even if it was not so much loose, and it made an substantial improvement in motor work smoothness.

Since the noise went away, I didn't bother to check the tension after all the work :) And the engine still works fine. I call this a successful job! From what I've heard, the MB 190s timing chains are weak, is it true?

      So theses engines are fantastic.
Japan workers do a excellent job.
Is it weak? Don't know, my two seemed to be much stiff on the wheel as I checked them as in a bicycle pulling out of the wheel.
