This is a great interview, and I am happy I stumbled upon it. I am a cultural consultant, helping Africans and Americans navigate cultural differences, and I have been speaking and writing about these issues. Again, thanks for a great interview.
Very important topic Hermela. Parenting in America can be debilitating. The 'identity factor' is the worst.Identity in a sense that parents' view could not possibly mesh with the kids. The kids have so many pressure from their peers that the parents may not have the ability to 'live thru'. The parents pull their hair off for their kids ever fluctuating moods. Something has to be done. Ur guest's message makes sense but we need more than that.
It's a wonderful conversation. We having a big problem in our community , you doing very helpful information for whose need help. Thank you for a blessed job.
Parents don’t see themselves black not even African and don’t even respect them. They feel they are Ethiopians. I have seen parents relating more to other immigrants of Asian origin. But this is not unique to Ethiopian immigrants.
The youth grow up in US culture and the older family members are more traditional. When you throw in youth who are half Ethiopian in US it is even more complex. Great conversation! More of this!
There is difference between Ethiopian culture, western culture and black culture, Ethiopian culture is similar to the horn of african culture and sudan culture and also its similar to middle eastern culture or arab culture, Africa is really diverse, like north africa have its own culture east african also have either own, But social media reflect west african and south African culture as an the whole african culture or black culture, Thats why we Ethiopian says we are not black race because black race is only for west African, And That is done by media

A great insight and thank you for sharing. Embracing the multicultural identity is a key message I learnt, an aspect that I think some of us disregard.
Ethiopian Americans? Bunch of careless Ethiopian. You are African American or black to the people in the US know yourselves as a people 👍🏿 long live Ethiopia 🇪🇹 African Unity ✊🏿
No, it’s just a matter of not trusting the society talking to the western society exposing their past to their children. And mental health it’s not something that to discuss especially in Ethiopian community. Specially the stigma is very high and less tell the truth Ethiopian people do not believe oh one to believe when it comes to mental health existence.
Interesting video. Many Ethio people left homeland mostly after fall of Ethio Empire in 1970s communist took power. Refuges went to Europe & North America. Disapora now mostly in Europe & North America i think 1 million plus. Other group that grandfathers left ET🇪🇹went to west work as seaman in Europe in 1950s & 1960s. Decadents are in Europe I hope decadents visit their Ancestral homeland🙏
Ok 1st generation means immigrant children born in the new country & 2nd & so on ! The best solution the parents need to see in real time what the kids are experiencing & the first generation kids need to visit the parents homeland & where they grow up! You have to be stronger than the environment your in at the end of the day. OVERCOMING is hard work & not giving in to the B S .!
Absolutely true! Kids need to be informed of what is going on in the real world, but at the same time choose what fits their own life style and don’t give in to outside pressure. They need to be knowledgeable all around including their history, where they come from, to make sound life decisions.
Holy Orthodoxy is the answer but parents must lead by example. You show them that Christ and His Church is how we wage spiritual war in a fallen world.
The International Community should be alert about the unjustified killings of innocent Amharas and other Ethiopians, undisclosed horrifying prisons and unjustified prisoners of conscience in ETHIOPIA! Abiy , Shimelis, Adanech, Qejela...and their collaborating conspirators are the prime responsible figures!!!
