How anyone, including someone as ignorant of African Politics as myself, could believe today that the IMF and the World Bank put the best interests of Citizens first, is beyond me.
    Peace and love to all.

Ethinc cleansing specifically on Amhara's in oromeya? Not accountability for the lose of life and properties in that ridiculous war with TPLF ? So Which one you call it prosperity? Eugene you're probably one of the smartest commentators on the horn of Africa and beyond. Your understanding of geopolitics and American foreign policy is unmatched. One thing I want to point out to you however is that Ethiopia and China or indeed South Korea do not have historical similarities. The Chinese had gone through brutal cultural revolution during Mao's time to revive an existing nation technologically and interms of nation level thinking. Ethiopia is several nations patched together within a soverien country and will need to go through several decades nation building process before any meaningful advancement similar to China or Korea are able to manifest itself. The fact that it is economically reliant on western donors will push that reality even further. Therefore the best Ethiopia can be is a middle income country just like most African or Asian countries. The Eritrean case is totally different it had gone through the brutal nation building process just like China and others and was able to withstand decades of western sponsored pressure; sanctions and war on it's own or with it's own organic human capacity. Therefore we can safely assume it can move towards middle income industrial economy pretty fast given the chance. My assumption is based on the feeling I have that the ground work/foundation had already been done for a sustainable development to take place almost instantaneously.

I think before claiming loan the government has to insure the peace in the country according the agreement signed in Pritoria. Stop dismentling. insure free movement and expressions. liberate journalists in prison. Stop surrounding to dominate in isolating ethinics.
You have well explained the real challenge is reset peace, equality, liberty and stop ethic confrontations. Think Ethiopia ❤️🇪🇹🙏

This money will be not for important sectors that will help to boost its economy. The administration will spend fir construction of the prim minister Palast and the fake sheer city in which a lot of Amharans were discriminated and demolished their houses near to Addis in oromia region. We opposed as a people if every peny is spend on economic growth and distributed equally in each regions.

If the Abiy's government is willing to compromise its principles and do what the IMF wants him to do in order to acquire the 2 B dollars, he may as well negotiate with the Ethiopian diaspora to secure more than 2 B. It should be noted that the Ethiopian diaspora sent over 4 Billion dollars to the country annually in the form of remittance. Unfortunately, that has not been the case recently as the majority of the Diaspora resented the direction to which the PM is taking the country.

The diaspora should focus all effort to understand what this law is enabling and hence work towards promoting a referendum for the new Constitution that is really of the Ethiopian people. Ensure the government can't do further damage. Targeted Sanctions work and it should chase their money they robed and saved outside Ethiopia.

Economic reform inclusive one is the most sustainable strategy to equilibrate the balance of payment deficit, which is very very wide. Trustworthy political intervention, which avoids volatility, unpredictability is the manadatory area where the gov should bring in to being ... there are different means of getting a significant amount of such money without debt where we have unbelievable accumulation. ..

The US helped in 1987 occupied by the three fronts (EPLF, OLF and TPLF) and ended up the Eritrea to succeed and for TPLF to govern Ethiopia. Helped this TPLF government by providing 1.2 Billion Dollars per year. All these helped the division to grow and mature for independence which the current OLF government is on the implementation phase.

EPLF was never held by US get your facts right. The number one country that had been against Eritrean independence from day one right upto today is successive US administrations not because they favour Ethiopia but they feel they can manipulate Ethiopia easily to get access to the strategic red sea. Read up on history!

The petrodollar hegemony is crumbling and all of this push is just out of desperation! Africa needs to walk away from the petrodollar as a national reserve currency! The future is a gold backed currency that is being adopted by many countries at the moment. The progress is slow but the dollar is on its death bed!

The Ethiopian diaspora need to take their time to find out where the problems are. The previous Ethiopian government who ruled Ethiopia for 30 years made the debts. Where were the Ethiopian diaspora when the then Ethiopian government made all the debts. The present government took over from the previous government all the debts it made. Therefore the Ethiopian diaspora should not penalize the current government for the misappropriation of debts of the previous government.

Govt will use the money and prosper government officials and cadres, coerce people, and continue the cycle of oppression.
There is no free flow of commodities in the country, and the govt creates internally displaced people. This loan emboldens this government for short-term and it would be a burden for the people of Ethiopia down the line....T

The solution is the Ethiopian people understood what is coming then they all should come together to limit the power of the government. Take the power back to the people by continuously peaceful demonstration and civil disobedience demanding for referendum for a new construction. Once the new construction is negotiated then create new independent institutions that protect it's valuable assets the people, the land and intangible Assets. Ensure the defense, intelligence, justice, media, civil service to become independent from government but only works with the government.

If Ethiopia cannot service its current debt and it does not get IMF loan (I am not recommending they do) then the only alternatives are a) default (future borrowing will be very expensive even if there is someone will to lend), b) get commercial loans at much higher interest rates (and remain in a debt trap for the forseable future).

Dear Hermela, Dear Hermela, your guest failed to address the main ingredient of development. All the developing countries that he mentioned had maintained the integrity and peace of their countries. Though I hate Meles Zenawi for introducing tribal politics, he uplifted so many poor people out of poverty by taking advantage of the peace that lasted for 27 years.
The other point you and your guest have failed to address is the 2 billion-dollar Ethiopia request. Number one, it is not a lot of money. For the IMF, it is a tip for any leaders who are going to do dirty jobs. After all, the money you and your guest are talking about is printed money that is not supported by any valuable materials. According to Russian experts, the IMF and the US gave 450 and 60 billion dollars to Ukraine, respectively. Since the time of the IMF's creation, the dollar has been used as a weapon to suppress African economies. It is a big wish that BRICKS one day will break the chain of the IMF.
The other point you and your guest missed was to address the attachment with those 2 billion that Ethippia requested. Before Ethiopia gets this request, Abyi must eliminate the Amara militia so the TPLF's army can take over Amara's territories. How could Abyi attack the Amara militia that helped him win against the TPLF? It was surprising not to hear these points from you and your guest. guest failed to address the main ingredient of development.
