Jura is my favourite Scottish island. A truly amazing place to visit and stay for a couple of days. A trip to the end of the road past George Orwell's house and onto the Corrywreckan is a must.

Many years ago Jura 10yo Origin was the first single malt I tried, and it got my Dad, brother and I into the whisky world. I used to love their Superstition and Prophecy as well. It was inevitable that we moved on and alas so did Jura. Sometimes I'm tempted to get those old bottlings on auction but I do wonder if its very much a fond memory that would be ruined by trying them again all these years later.

Great presentation and interesting dram , the life process most people find themselves in now is a challenge for most , shopping around for acceptable price drams now is interesting, and as you say, budget access to them.

I'm glad to see more appreciation for less expensive whisky. There are some low price whiskies that I have always liked and I dont like it when low price whisky is excluded from the conversation just for the assumption that they just 'bottom shelf'. I'm glad to hear that Ralffy doesn't feel that way. Value for the price is more important to talk about.

Jura 10 was the third bottle I ever bought. Beat the non age statement Glenmorray and Glenlivet by a mile. I'll always recommend Jura to newer whisky drinkers

Just a few years back, we could buy a 12y Glendronach for under 30 Euro. Now all you get for that is a NAS Jura at 40%, with E150a and chill filtration. Sad times indeed

Would love a mini series on decent malts (indie bottled) from maligned distilleries that ruin there own whiskies- eg, Jura, tamnavulin, macallan, aerstone etc

Can't agree with you more about buying discount bottles. 1. You save a penny while 2. building your vocabulary of taste and smell. And 3. knowing what you like vs. what is good or great scotch or single malts that should be avoided. Discount bottles offer an education in distilling, aging and end product without breaking the bank. Last but certainly not least, single barrel picks and independent bottlings give you an insight into the production process of most distilleries. And what a find they can be when they are discounted. Cheers!

I'm an experienced whisky drinker and have been enjoying the Jura Journey. Sure it's not the best whisky I've ever tried but it's perfectly decent and characterful even at 40%. And of course it could be better if naturally presented. But I remember ten years ago that whiskies which are now lauded because they have been praised by influencers were considered average at best, and suffered the same 'groupthink' as Jura still does. Those include Loch Lomond, Glen Scotia, Tobermory/Ledaig, Speyburn, Deanston etc NB Last year I picked up a bottle of Glen Keith for £20 and this year a bottle of Glen Scotia 10yo for £25.

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nice comment DavidUKesb.
10 plus years ago, Loch Lomond wasn't what it was today. It's a much better product now.
10 plus years ago, Glen Scotia and Tobermory were not the distilleries they once were. I remember Tobermory 10 in the old wide bottles. It was awful stuff. Today these distilleries are wonderful. Similar to Deanston. in those days, Deanston had a couple of core ranges back in the early 2000s. All bottled at 40% abv, coloured and chill filtered. They were poor. Today Deanston is a star distillery.
On the other hand, Jura is still stuck in the bad old days of chill filtration, 40% abv and colouring. It's such a shame.

Thank you very much for reviewing this and other 'budget' whiskies Ralfy - it is important for those of us with little disposable income but don't wish to forgo our single malts. I have to say though; appreciation of good quality malts is not exclusive to those that have drunk whiskies for many a year. When funds have allowed or whisky is gifted, I have sought out and can recognise the marked increase in quality when the whisky is an integrity presentation. That will always be the benchmark for me 😺😺.

As a whisky geek with a strong tropism to cask strength bottlings, I was recently quite surprised to really enjoy the Glen Scotia Campbelltown Harbour, despite it being NAS, chill-filtered, colored and 40%. Also retailing in the low 20 pounds range.

Recently bought the James Eadie 11 year Jura as only ever had official caramelised versions, and wanted to try more natural version Really enjoyable malt with definite west coast character. However may have to consider this sort of option in few years when fixed rate comes to end. Until then expanding the stash…

Nice to see a Jura review. I purchased 2 bottles of Tastival of 2016 and 2017 versions.(in 2017 and 2018) Havent opened them yet. Both are bottled at 51% Alcohol, and were hand picked barrels for a specific profile for an island festival....so I am hoping they will be a tad more complex, flavorful and interesting... than the standard bottlings......

No awkward moment that time! 😀 For an easy-drinking, uncomplicated experience, I will admit I remain quite partial to Black Bottle: £16.80 when purchased last year, and then dropped to just under £16 shortly after that.

Black Bottle is still a very decent blend. To bump up the flavor a bit, add a tablespoon or two of your favorite Islay single malt to a bottle of BB - it'll taste more like it used to!

About 15 years ago or so, I could get Highland Park 12 for $26.00 a bottle, Laphroaig 10 for $30.00 and all three of the very good blended malts offered by Jon, Mark and Robbo (JMR) for $25.00 to $27.00 each. That kept going for only about a year, but it was great while it lasted!

Greetings Mr Ralfy and thank you so much for another informative review. We have certainly felt the pressure from the economy, especially down here in Australia. I believe we are on the dge of another rescission. That single malt here is Aus is $65, and I personally only have had Jura 12 year old, which I'd my least fav single malt of all time. My go-to on that price range is Aerstone 10 year old, which is usually on sale for $56. If that Jura comes down to around $50, I will try it. I have recently started opening up my single malt collected bottles that I have kept over the years simply because I can't afford buying anymore. Lost my house to divorce settlement and now paying rent twice as normal price because of this crazy housing market. It's gonna be a tough ride for most of us in the next 2 or 3 years.

  • @ZootC
    @ZootC ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for the interesting review. I ended up here because like you I bought a bottle of this because it was £23 in Tesco. I imagine they are having a push at supermarkets to get rid of it.
I really don't agree with your experience on the nose, but that's OK, I don't have your nose. For me it was harsh, overwhelming to the point of burning and I had some just about an hour ago as of writing.
My bottle has a very similar amount left as yours does because I really do not like it at all. I tried a dash of water, I tried some ice. I'm not one for mixers other than the odd good dry ginger ale. None of them improved it to the point of me wanting to drink it more.
For me this will be going on the GFG shelf ( garbage for unwanted guests ). I'm not sure this one will ever get finished, though I could dump it in coffee. Yes, my mother is a McAlistair from Glasgow but my father is from Denmark and I'm from Manchester. So I am pretty much a heathen.
For this, I was more reminded of a Woodford Reserve cask bourbon, which is another drink that is way to sharp and hot for my taste, at least out of the bottle.
Maybe I was spoiled by the Cardhu I just finished.

I liked the Jura Superstition that was lightly peated and 43%ABV that I got on close out years ago but I wouldn't pay MSRP what was $60 over 5 years ago. I got mini's of it for about $1.75 each that comes out to about $30 a bottle. It was pretty tasty for the money

it was completely unknown to me until my supermarket replaced my usual order with a jura bourbon - and while i was put off by 'bourbon cask' marketing, i'm glad i checked this out
once you get past the bourbon notes, you _can_ sort of see a proper whiskey trying to get out: and yes, it's nothing to write home about but it's also rather inoffensive and very easy to drink

I wish the distillery would bottle the "wild" version of the distillate; the honeyed, walnutty, salty, lightly peated, porridge-made-with-milk-foam version you could sometimes find in mid-teens independent bottlings. Maybe that's even an entirely different distillate from what they use in the official bottlings?

I only had the "Journey". It sitting on my shelf for a few years, I've never reached for it.. 1/3 ended up in my blend decanter. For around 20€ I can get Tomatin Legacy. The virgin oak and slightly better 43% somehow works. I find it better than Tomatin 12...

Just had a bottle of red wine cask at 25£ but I prefer Tamnauvulins cheap expression of red wine cask. Never been happy with any of the Jura bottlings including the 18 year old. I recently bought jura red wine cask, glen moray twisted vine and jack daniels mclaren and drank the jura first to get it out of the way. I quite like the glen moray twisted vine and the jd is surprisingly memorable for a 40% ABV

Looks like this more or less a direct replacement for the Jura Journey which Amazon has been selling for £22 for several years (similar prices here in Germany though those include ~£6 less alcohol duty). Supermarkets have higher operating costs than Amazon, so they might have made a loss but I rather doubt that Whyte & Mackay have been selling this at a loss for several years.

That bottle would be about $50 Aust dollars, we pay twice that price for single malts 😏

I had a bottle of Jura 10 several months ago, largely because of the low price ($40 in OR, USA.) That's about as cheap as a single malt whisky can be found here. I was profoundly disappointed. It was flat, unidimensional and generally lacking any character. I still have a bit left, and I'll probably use it for a toddy this winter. By contrast, the Tomatin 12 at $42 was quite decent.
BTW, adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) are of the devil. They get people to invest in properties that are just barely affordable, and when interest goes up, the owners are out on the street, either dispossessed entirely or forced to sell at a depressed rate. ARMs are predatory and exploitive, and they ought to be banned. JMHO.

Interesting option. However, now that I have more experience I think I would drink less before I would choose a cheap "non-integrity" whisky like Jura.

Hi Ralfy, don't like any of the Juras since they relaunched them 2-3years back. Everyone is peaty. They were never like that before. Very disappointing.
