1Zpresso K-Plus Review: Premium Hand Grinder (With A Price Tag To Match)

  • The 1Zpresso K-Plus is one of the most refined manual coffee grinders on the market. This video is a simple review and grind demo/comparison after several months of daily use.
    Besides the all-around excellent build quality, I was struck by the evenness and speed of its 48mm burrs (which ground 15g @ setting #6.5 in just 20 seconds) as well as the easy, precise external adjustment.
    Is it worth the step up in price from cheaper 1Zpresso models? If you like the adjustment mechanism, and you brew enough espresso to value the 22-micron clicks, then I'd say yes.
    It's not cheap at about $270 (as of writing), and doesn't quite have the cachet of a Comandante, but the K-Plus's value and performance easily hold their own.

    I just purchased this…I love it! So smooth and easy to use. The numbering on the outside makes changing the grind size so simple. I can’t believe nobody has done that before. The only issue I had initially was static cling in the reservoir…the grounds would stick to the sides because of the magnetic cup. A little trick I learned from a reviewer took care of that nicely. Wet your spoon before you scoop your beans into the grinder…took care of it immediately. The size,multi grind settings, aesthetic and the machining are great. Never thought I’d spend $250 for a hand grinder but I’m quite sure I’ll never have to buy another grinder in my lifetime again.

      Yeah, the numbering/adjustment really makes it a pleasure to use. Zero desire to try other grinders at this point, unless curiosity gets the better of me...
      Great tip about wetting the spoon! Lately I've been doing something similar, _then_ tapping it on a mat (after grinding) as another commenter suggested here. Now there's just a trace of retention, probably on the order of 0.1 g, or about a single bean.

    I've used one for six months. Not only it is very consistent from a grind to another and very easy to clean and re-setup but having a premium grinder everywhere you go with a a nice travel kit is just perfect. My only regret is to not have waited for the ZP6 filter focused version.

      Good to hear Hugo. Do you grind for espresso + filter - with tasty results ?

    Great review! For pour over, the community loves both the K-series and the Q2 with heptagonal burrs (wich is basically a budget comandante, same profile, same burrs). From what i’ve heard even tho the other grinders are good, these 2 are the best tasting. I’m waiting for a k-series with the new j-max ring

      Thanks for watching! Haven't had the chance to try a Q2 yet, but from what I've seen/read, it's got to be the best deal out there right now. Not that I *need* to buy any more coffee paraphernalia, but...

    Jx-pro here. Been a year, really nice bit of kit. Recommended if you're looking for a good grinder.
    Main issues, bit of retention near the burrs, rubber grip slips (not a big deal with big hands, changing setting is more of a guess, best to 'zero' and dial again. And it's not calibrated to zero out if the box.
    As for the rest, really good, fast, sturdy, good ergonomics.

    • @thebolderbrew
      @thebolderbrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great to know, thanks for weighing in!
      Yeah the retention seems inherent to their whole line. Oh well.
      Interesting about the calibration... At least it's an easy adjustment in most cases. I don't actually recall whether my K-Plus was calibrated right out of the box; wish I'd checked before disassembling.

    • @0bzen22
      @0bzen22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thebolderbrew It would be more of a problem on the K-Plus.
      With the classic dial style, you can compensate. I put some black ink on the true 'zero' :) It's about at 8 for me, and I can't be bothered to fix it.

    Same thing with the Velcro strap on mine, I think it came with it on in the right position, folding around somehow, but I forget how it was oriented lol.
    There is retention on my K Plus, the top where the coffee exits the burrs and is supposed to fall, coffee seems to stick there from static around the ledges up there. Using the brush to get it out, is usually messy, I think it's about 1g which is a lot for a hand grinder! But kinda rotating the magnetic cup making it knock / vibrate helps get most of the coffee knocked down. If you have a rubber tamping mat that would work too, giving it a knock.
    *update* Oh you did mention that later on.

    I just got mine -- your velcro isn't wrong you just need to wrap the velcro on the left hand side on the left in a circle so that you can adjust the width when attaching the right hand side

    Great review.
    For espresso the JX-pro and J-Max are probably the better options (and cheaper) much smaller settings between clicks.
    I tried the JX-Pro at my buds place once it was equally solid and quality feeling, maybe even heavier actually, but it doesn't come with as many accessories as the K plus.

    • @thebolderbrew
      @thebolderbrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ben! Yeah, the JX-Pro in particular is a bargain (relatively speaking). Really impressive line all the way around. Only complaint is it's a little hard to keep track of that many models with non-self-explanatory names!
      That's funny re: Velcro, who knows what they had in mind!
      I forget whether I mentioned it in this video, but the droplet technique (th-cam.com/video/T0Dh1W40ILY/w-d-xo.html) works really well. Still more retention than I'd like, but generally reduces it from a problem to just a mild nuisance. Great call on the tamping mat, I gotta try that!

      @@thebolderbrew I think I remember seeing somewhere that 1zpresso recommended against using RDT. I never really liked the idea of adding moisture to coffee or to a grinder at least but some manufacturers recommend and encourage it but their burrs are titanium / redspeed coated.

    hi is a good grinder for the price ? 250 dollars??? or for that price have better options? and the last i listen about k plus k ultra and k max y dont understand what of this 3 options is better and why please?

    • @thebolderbrew
      @thebolderbrew  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't recall the differences between those, but it seems like _all_ 1Zpresso models are terrific for their price points. If you pay attention to whether they're described as espresso- or filter-oriented (or both), then I don't think you will go wrong!

    Hi, I recently got a k-plus. Do you ever find it producing too much fines for filter coffee? I'm grinding around 5.5, is it too fine for filter coffee? Thanks

    • @thebolderbrew
      @thebolderbrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool, hope you're enjoying it!
      I don't have any problem with fines. All grinders will produce some, but the K-Plus doesn't produce an unusual or troublesome amount.
      I'd say 5.5 is too fine for filter brewing. Great for certain AeroPress recipes though. For what it's worth, I stick to roughly 7 ± 0.5 for a V60, depending on the bean and batch size.

    The velcro holding strap has not been stitched in upside down. There are three straps: The centre strap shares it's "woollen" velcro top with the velcro hooks of the two "outer" straps.
