    A very soulful interpretation of a masterpiece...and a difficult one, at that - beautifully and lovingly performed here.

  • @billkelly8222

    This last rag of Joplin's reminds me of the first movement of Mozart's last piano concerto (the No. 27 in B-flat Major). Both have an understated, melancholy wistfulness that shines through their ostensible major-key cheerfulness.

    • @k364k364
      @k364k364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bill Kelly, you have nailed an amazing connection between 1791 and 1941. Yes, so true. The bitter-sweet of both compositions is quite striking.

    • @Santosificationable
      @Santosificationable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I highly agree. Joplin in general strongly reminds me of Mozart - sadness veiled in happiness. I don't even listen as captivatedly to most other ragtime or jazz composers. Joplin really stands out.

    God, when someone gets the timing right on a Joplin piece, like Frank absolutely nails here, it just comes to life. Thrilling sir. What a gift you've shared with us. LOVE IT!

  • @Santosificationable
    @Santosificationable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Scott Joplin had the temperament of Mozart's more eccentric side - sadness veiled in happiness. And you cannot find that mood anywhere better than this piece, achieved successfully by Livolsi here.

  • @TokyoBlobby
    @TokyoBlobby 10 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    Thank you for posting. I realy like how he slows down the piece. Many rag time players turn every tune into a competition who plays it the fastest. But this well played colourfull version is very nice.

    • @belky501
      @belky501 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      HobbyBlobby it's just so fun to play them as fast as you possibly can haha

    • @noonehere0987
      @noonehere0987 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is too slow for a rag though. It ruins the ragtime characteristic playing it this slow, even if Joplin's melodies make it still very enjoyable. It'd be like playing Beethoven's 5th at half tempo or something. It'll still sound good but will be missing the point of the music.

    • @Santosificationable
      @Santosificationable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@noonehere0987 Yeah but this is Magnetic Rag, the last rag he ever wrote. Joplin was trying to insert sadness in his rags, especially this one. This isn't the festive Maple Leaf Rag. Joplin's ragtime is sadness veiled in happiness. So it's only apt to play it at a moderate, not fast, tempo. Especially since Joplin himself was very keen on making sure his rags weren't played "fast" - he wrote it down. Joplin was the black Chopin.

    • @christopherzimmer
      @christopherzimmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This tempo feels so perfect to me personally! So many other performances just feel rushed- and why? What’s the point? He said “ragtime should never be played fast”….

  • @patarmstrong4676

    Your performance of this--one of my favorites too--really shows us the truly incredible genius of Scott Joplin. I am sure beyond any doubt that he would be proud of and thoroughly enjoy hearing this great ragtime masterpiece played so impeccably as he composed it to be played. Superb in every way and done on such a fine instrument as that...Magnetic Rag at its very, very best!

    Gorgeously executed and at the optimal tempo! Scott Joplin viewed ragtime as the art form it is and said it was to be played slow. Often, people play ragtime too quickly. This was one of the best renditions ever played and put onto TH-cam. Thank you and I hope you're continuing to play.

      Yes, that is usually the case. I went to the 2019 Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia, MO. Most of the the people there were the elderly. I was an "oddball," as most of the audience called me as I was 15, one of the few "youngins" there. The performers, however, were in there 20s through 40s, a few elderly performers.

    Yes! I agree...this is Joplin's best rag written and published just before he was taken out permanently by tertiary syphilis. Well done playing it slow like it's suppose to be...this is his most dynamic rag in my humble opinion: you got traditional ragtime, Italian tarantella and "flat-out" classical bits & pieces all mixed into one great 5+ minute track of ear candy. ¡Bravo!

    I don't understand the haters in comments saying that this isn't true to ragtime. IMO this rag is compositionally different than Joplin's other rags, and approaching it this way is a completely valid way of approaching it.

    I wanted to send a TH-cam link to my granddaughter in Australia of Magnetic rag. Having listened to about 8 different versions, I think this is the best, and I think Frank really has this down. I learned this rag last semester and hopefully will put up my own version one day. The saying attributed to Beethoven that a wrong note here and there is understandable, but that to play without passion is inexcusable rings true here, and if Frank will forgive me, there are other versions on TH-cam with fewer errors, but the clarity and passion of this rendition is just delightful. Thanks Frank for great playing.
