I love how when he initially sees her he doesn't express any negative judgments as he expects her to be a competent pilot hired for her skill. Its only after he reads the article that he starts freaking out realizing that she was likely chosen for every reason other than being able to fly a plane.

To be considered for the naval aviation officer's program, you have to take the ASTB which tests you on 7 areas such as math, nautical, mechanical and avionic theory and reading comprehension. Scores go from 20 to 80. I believe to even be considered you had to score a minimum of 50 but in reality the selectees were usually 70+ with quite a few perfect scores. I spent most of my career on carriers and my last ship, a good friend of mine was in the training department. We had a group of officer trainees on board and she had access to all their training records. The group was all white guys except for one black guy--out of the group, he was the only one with a score under 70. I believe he was in the low 50s. This was over 20 years ago btw. This lowering of standards has been SOP for decades, but it still didn't yield the desired results, so that's why now the big push.

Everyone else prior was required to have passed the fire fighter academy AND state paramedic test after finishing the paramedic program. What resulted was one on one tutorial of the new hire while he attended school. Every day hand feed him/her with study material. After failing the scholastic portion and repeating it , made it out with a C and then flunked the state exam twice even tho they were tutored daily. After nearly two years of trying to get this person up to speed he quit and applied to a neighbor department needing diversification that just got a new pay raise contract. After getting hired there he was arrested for growing and selling marijuana in a warehouse and fired. And we had three more similar stories at our house. Affirmative action is so dangerous is this type of story. The most qualified must be hired. Always in these jobs.

This demonstrates a very real-world problem with affirmative action: even if that pilot is extremely qualified and capable, people will worry that she’s under-qualified because of AA hiring! If an Asian person says he went to Harvard, you know he’s the best of the best, perfect GPA, most intelligent guy, instant hire! With a black applicant, you’ll have to honestly wonder if he was qualified for Harvard, or a diversity admission.

😂 I’m a white guy who went to university then realized they really didn’t want ppl like me there anyway, so gave up on any career in academia. Now I’m training to be a pilot and almost done my commercial license. There were lots of other good reasons to become a pilot right now, but the fact that merit will hopefully always matter more than diversity in aviation did help influence my decision. There are definitely good women pilots but the ones I’ve met, despite having the skills, don’t seem eager to progress on to bigger planes/airlines. Like they have the skills, companies would love to hire them, but they rather stay on as instructors or fly private. I’ve met several that have the skill, but not the confidence, to see themselves as captains on big planes for major airlines. Some ppl say that’s cause it’s such a male dominated occupation that they don’t see other women doing that, so don’t think they can do that. I kinda think that’s bogus, companies love advertising an all female crew when they get the chance and there are plenty of female captains these days. Female astronauts, hell, Boudicca led the Iceni against Rome 2k years ago. Male pilots definitely tend to be more confident, bordering on cocky, which can become a problem. Female pilots tend to be more knowledgeable when it comes to regulations and air law. People can study the regs and be tested on their knowledge but you can’t train someone to be confident. That something you figure out on your own. I heard a 777 captain who was also a training captain for a major airline say that if one of their captains makes a mistake (like fail a ride) and they loose their confidence, that’s a big problem. They don’t want career first officers. And confidence to do the job and take on the responsibility is very much a requirement.

Similar story myself. Went to college to learn programming in the late 90's, looked up the schedule the course was supposed to take, was anxious about a year in that we were 8 months behind schedule, despite our entire class group completing assignments that were supposed to take weeks within days. Realised it's probably something to do with the female instructors, both of whom had to read directly from the study book and couldn't answer any kind of questions and one of whom would routinely gloat about how they only got the job because they were an old woman and that she knew nothing about the subject. The entire year we were there there was a male tutor who seemed to be the only one who had any idea what he was talking about (for example he's the only one who talked about assembly language and concepts like that and he was the only one who could actually answer questions) but despite the fact we were supposed to be tutored by him at least once a week I saw him all of 3 times over the whole year because he was also contracted by about 5 other local colleges and was supposed to be simultaneously teaching in multiple classes for each college.
I realised that even if I miraculously did graduate I'd have no real understanding of the subject and probably wouldn't be functional in a professional setting, so just left and got a job in a warehouse. Been working warehouses ever since. Also killed my interest in programming and I had done it as a hobby beforehand.

this is frighteningly accurate. honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if real mass disaster incidents similar to this imagined incident (hopefully less violent) start happening in real life. there are 100% DEI hires at my workplace that are dangerously unqualified, and I'm a biomedical engineer that works for a company that runs human clinical trials. there are also dozens of DEI employees wandering around everywhere who were passed through school and then later hired to meet requirements, and who learned nothing from their education.
The US Dept of Education recently released numbers that indicated that as many as 75% of students graduating from high school in majority black/POC Detriot schools can barely read and write, and/or may be mostly illiterate. similar stats came out of other major cities when it comes to black/POC literacy relative to inner city high school graduation. in other words, the vast majority of graduating high school seniors in inner cities read at a 3rd-5th grade level, and can barely write. moreover, many for-profit (or even state) colleges will take ANY student, regardless of GPA or test scores, so these students who can barely read or write are often able to get federal aid to attend a community college if they choose to do so.
a POC nurse at a hospital where I was supervising a clinical trial recently switched a patient from the hospital's standard oxygen (housed on the wall of every hospital room), to a portable oxygen tank to take him for testing. the only problem? she never turned on the portable oxygen tank, because she didn't know how to operate the tank, and refused to ask for help, or even acknowledge that she didn't know what she was doing. if I hadn't been a former nurse myself, and quickly noticed her mistake, he would have begun suffocating and been rendered unable to speak or tell anyone what was happening to him, likely leading to brain injury. when I became upset and complained about her serious error in judgement, nothing came of my complaint. I later quietly found out that due to DEI initiatives, the hospital started placing practical nurses (1 year of trade school education) in positions historically meant for registered nurses (4 year bachelor's degree in Nursing), because most registered nurses are caucasian, and more practical nurses are POC. so the only way to increase diversity was to hire more practical nurses. for reference, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 81% of all registered nurses are white, compared to 7% black, 7% asian. on the other hand, 58% of practical nurses are white, compared to 16% hispanic and 13% black. so in order to "diversify", they are forced to hire underqualified staff.
the true issue at hand is that many POC don't graduate from college, or other technical programs, even if they start. black POC have the lowest college graduation rates in the country. Asian students have a 75% college graduation rate, while white students have a 70% college graduation rate. sadly, only about 40% of black POC students who start college actually graduate. that's why these diversity initiates in their current form are so harmful - the race breakdown of qualified staff is literally 70-80% white, and yet every employer somehow wants to hire 50% qualified black/POC? they don't exist! the obvious solution is to better understand why black/POC students are dropping out of college at much higher rates than white/asian students. that's a true diversity initiative - actually increase the number of black/POC students that graduate from college every year, so that more qualified black/POC employees exist. DEI initiatives are so terrifying today because they are completely performative and harmful, instead of addressing the true inequalities and striving for meaningful change - qualified black/POC employees just simply are not there in the same numbers as qualified white employees, based on actual statistics from trustworthy institutions. current DEI initiatives are a dangerous PR move that fail to address the real issue which is leading to lack of diversity in the skilled workforce - lack of qualified POC candidates due to low high school GPAs amongst black/POC (average GPA 2.5 (black/POC) compared to average GPA 3.2 (white) and 3.5 (Asian)), low college enrollment rates amongst black/POC and high college dropout rates amongst black/POC. don't just cover the festering wound with a DEI bandaid in an effort to hide the existence of the wound, actually cure it at the source.

I had surgery last year and was hospitalized for 2-3 days. One of my RNs was black named Sheila and she either forgot or just didn't administer the IV antibiotic I was prescribed, nor brought my pain meds or other medications I take regularly, despite asking for them twice. Thankfully, I brought my meds with me. The RN named Jennifer who had the next shift asked me how my night went. I'm sure she asked after seeing I didn't get any of my meds, and that machine had been beeping for so long because my IV fluid was empty, even after calling the nurses station. I told her I had to take the oral pain meds, and others I had in my purse which I had been prescribed before my surgery. I told her Sheila never came back in my room after coming in to introduce herself and write on the whiteboard. Jennifer told me that patients have the right to ask for a different RN, or any other nurse/tech and that I should do so if I'm feeling like I'm not getting the care I need. I don't know if that applies in every state, but I'll certainly keep it in mind going forward. Thankfully, I only had Sheila again the day I was being discharged. I know that can take a while sometimes, but it took 4+ hours for me to get my paperwork to leave. I had been disconnected from the IV, heart monitors, etc., was dressed, had my husband there ready to drive me home, but the hours just went by. We didn't want to be rude, but finally my husband stood out in the hallway to flag another nurse to ask what was taking so long. She said she'd find out, and 10 minutes later I finally got my discharge paperwork and they called for a wheelchair to leave. I've had some truly amazing, caring nurses in the past who happened to be black, and actually received better care from them than the white nurses. Before this DEI crap I would never assume anything about a professional's ability to do their job based on skin color, but because of these hiring practices it gives me pause. And it sucks because it didn't used to be this way.

Since this is based on the readings from the radio altimeters, it is possible that a sufficiently fast descent rate may result in a crash before the computer realizes a crash is imminent, especially if the aircraft is in an orientation where the radio altimeters are receiving spurious data.

This aged...so well, after Boeing's wonderful job hiring engineers based on diversity. I'm so glad i could be part of this history in the making.

My dad, a flight instructor for 25 years, talked about a student pulling the race card. My dad told him he couldn’t have his pilots license because his plane was losing 50,000 feet for no reason during cruising altitude, and he couldn’t land with all equipment in tact… which is remarkably a requirement.

That policy was clearly designed by white supremacists. Landing with all the gear intact should absolutely NOT be a requirement.

50,000 feet for no reason? I have heard down draft dropping plane suddenly for 10K, but 50K? Could not recover from down draft and went into uncontrollable dive, then smashed the landing gear with disaster landing?

I think you are using the wrong scale. Fifty thousand feet is the cruising altitude of only the highest flying of airliners. Losing that much altitude usually means crashing into the ocean depths 😅

50,000 feet? Are you sure it wasn't more like 5,000 feet? Losing that is certainly possible although even that is an extreme loss. 500 feet would be more common for a novice pilot.
