Not gonna lie, this tank is huge in height and the armor is so thick. My brother was a test driver of the pindad he said "it's like driving a dirt bike on a mountain". And it's a bit spacious when I sat at the driver seat.

Had M'sia procrastinated still & miss-out on this entirely.. That will be such a shame. Anyhow neither Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand nor Vietnam, "NOT EVN" Israel, for that matter (considering for such long time they've not at all engage us with any form of hostility) is our enemy, but *our naivety, *our utter ignorance & *misguided believe that conflict is but some far-away happening or all but a figment-of-the-imagination, in other words; paranoia, "THESE * absolutely ARE (our enemies) !!". Mind you we are not Monaco or Hong Kong, where they are protectorates, under the jurisdiction of France & China (formerly under the British Empire's) respectively. The Leopard 2A*(version somethings), Chally 1 & 2, MTU diesel-piston powered Abrams M1A2 'SEP 3', T-90MS, T-84 Oplot, PR China's VT-4 & this P.T.Pindad-FNSS 'Rimau orTiger'. I certainly hope the designers know that in their effort to compromise between weight, protection, and firepower that they've put out an inferior design. The proper route for their purposes would be to design a "Lite tank". Because such a tanks armor would be completely ineffective against larger more heavily armored vehicles, it would really only need to concern itself with armed APCS and infantry fighting vehicles on the ground, meaning it is presumably over armored. What's more a 105mm gun can and has been mounted on lighter platforms whilst still remaining effective. A medium tank is simply a compromise between heavier (and therefore slower) more powerful vehicles and liter more agile vehicles with the aim of preserving the best qualities of both, however such an aim in and of itself is a flawed one. On the modern battlefield, if two similarly capable armored vehicles were to meet, the odds are that whichever vehicle fired the first shot, and or proved more agile, would be the victor. With this in mind what you truly require is akin to a glass cannon. You need only the amount of armor necessary to deal with small arms and shoulder fired weaponry as anything larger is likely to penetrate anyway. Build a vehicle like this and you will find that not only will you vehicle be far liter, capable of crossing bridges and moving through terrain others simomy cannot, but that it will be capable of fielding the same amount of firepower and active protection systems. Any soldier who's carried heavy loads for long will tell you that ounces equal pounds, in much the same way if a vehicle is liter the faster and more agile it is capable of being. When you build a medium tank your simply building a slower, heavier lite tank with far to much armor.
Thats what i thought an ifv would be the better decision against soft and light armor targets. Against modern mbt? Weak weapon Weak armor Only mobility which is irrelevant with modern fire control systems. I would rather buy t90 than that thing....
@@xloltimex38 to be fair the t90 is an excellent tank all around, and upgraded versions can easily go toe to toe with any other main battle tank. As for the 105mm main gun, such a gun is no good against the frontal armor of modern MBTS but is still capable of penetrating the side armor on such vehicles so it isnt useless.
The designers of the Harimau are more than likely aware of the criticisms laid out in your comment. Put simply, there are probably 4 reasons why Pindad would commit to such a project, and why the finished product would be satisfactory to their requirements. 1) Pindad are the Indonesian state-owned industrial defense concern. Projects such as this one expand upon their expertise and range, as well as their objectives toward self-sufficient defense industry. It's a bit similar to a Chinese nuclear submarine: it doesn't have to be perfect, so long as it provides a sort of experiential test-bed. It's the first step in a journey. 2) Given the topography and geography of both their frontiers and their interior, as well the necessities of deployment and delivery related to both the geography as well as the relatively limited logistical assets of the Indonesian armed forces, there are obvious size and weight limitations. These should be obvious upon tertiary examination and you are no doubt aware of them, so I won't go into any further detail. 3) No other country in SEA is currently manufacturing ANY indigenous tank of any size - albeit some nations would be more than capable of doing so, were they so inclined. Thus the Harimau takes on an element of national prestige, adding a political dimension. As you point out, the design is certainly a compromise - if compared to its contemporaries -, however this is not unintentional. It doesn't need to be the most powerful tank in theatre, however it does require a certain versatility. I postulate that the rationale is somewhat similar to the logic behind the development of the battlecruiser prior to WW1; more maneuverable and nimble than a full size tank (especially in the rain-forest), more powerful than than anything else it might encounter (of course, that logic might prove to have a fatal flaw - HMS Hood, anyone?). A T90, as mentioned by someone else, might represent a better option in a tank vs. tank engagement, but this represents only one possible (and unlikely) scenario in the Harimaus' prospects of deployment. The more likely scenario is that it will not be deployed against vehicles of equal size, armor or armament. It will be deployed in support of dismounted or light infantry, in terrain unsuited to conventional armor, against opponents highly unlikely to employ tanks (if armor) of any size. It has an (arguably) fair chance against any MBTs it might encounter, were Indonesia ever to find itself in such an engagement; this allows Indonesia's defence planners slightly more flexibility in preparing for as wide a range of contingencies as possible, while reserving their heavier tanks for more offensive purposes. The Harimau fulfills the priority requirements of the Indonesian defense forces, while supplementing the lower ones. 4) The final reason is that it's pretty likely that both Turkey and Indonesia are aware that this sort of thing will be extremely attractive to a lot of potential customers who face similar topographical, infrastructural and/or financial limitations. Who wants to buy 1 Leopard 2 when you can buy 3 Pindad Harimau tanks (that might turn out to be an exaggeration, but you see my point)?

Memang meriam 105mm tergolong lemah untuk standar sekarang. Nggak akan mampu menandingi sejenis T-90, Abrams dan Leopard 2. Tapi cukup untuk menghancurkan APC, IFV dan kubu infantri. Soalnya overkill kalau pake Leopard 2 untuk menghancurkan target2 lunak seperti APC dan IFV. Jadi sebaiknya unit2 yonkav Harimau nanti tujuannya jadi pendukung yonif2 saat butuh bantuan tembakan. Jadi yonkav 1 dan yonkav 8, bisa fokus khusus untuk bertempur melawan MBT musuh.

We (M'sia) oughtta buy a coupl-a hundreds of these yor remarkable med. tank or cooperate with FNSS-Pindad to build this same vehicle under license, but by our specs & revision on some designs. Had M'sia procrastinated still & miss-out on this entirely.. That will be such a shame. Anyhow neither Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand nor Vietnam, "NOT EVN" Israel, for that matter (considering for such long time they've not at all engage us with any form of hostility) is our enemy, but *our naivety, *our utter ignorance & *misguided believe that conflict is but some far-away happening or all but a figment-of-the-imagination, in other words; paranoia, "THESE * absolutely ARE (our enemies) !!". Mind you we are not Monaco or Hong Kong, where they are protectorates, under the jurisdiction of France & China (formerly under the British Empire's) respectively.
The Leopard 2A*(version somethings), Chally 1 & 2, MTU diesel-piston powered Abrams M1A2 'SEP 3', T-90MS, T-84 Oplot, PR China's VT-4 & this P.T.Pindad-FNSS 'Rimau orTiger'. Any 1 selection from the abuv line-up wudda made a great choice, Thailand f.i. made 2 very prudent selection for their MBTs. We of all things, had to go for some refurb disused T-72 crap. I say strip them of the useful targeting electro-optics, fire-control electronics, night-sights, but retain the tranny for future refitting into other prospectable future (here didn't mean futuristic) MBT chassis, auction off the engine for local fishing boat use, convert the 125mm main-gun into 'Towed Artillery' piece & dump the hull down into the sea for the creation of artificial reefs to benefit sea-life. Our heroes deserved better tools to not only keep Us, this Nation safe from any eventuality, but atta same time keep their own confidence & morale up, knowing We have the right tools necessary to prevail against any wud be invaders that carry secessionist agendas in mind.

I certainly hope the designers know that in their effort to compromise between weight, protection, and firepower that they've put out an inferior design. The proper route for their purposes would be to design a "Lite tank". Because such a tanks armor would be completely ineffective against larger more heavily armored vehicles, it would really only need to concern itself with armed APCS and infantry fighting vehicles on the ground, meaning it is presumably over armored. What's more a 105mm gun can and has been mounted on lighter platforms whilst still remaining effective. A medium tank is simply a compromise between heavier (and therefore slower) more powerful vehicles and liter more agile vehicles with the aim of preserving the best qualities of both, however such an aim in and of itself is a flawed one. On the modern battlefield, if two similarly capable armored vehicles were to meet, the odds are that whichever vehicle fired the first shot, and or proved more agile, would be the victor. With this in mind what you truly require is akin to a glass cannon. You need only the amount of armor necessary to deal with small arms and shoulder fired weaponry as anything larger is likely to penetrate anyway. Build a vehicle like this and you will find that not only will you vehicle be far liter, capable of crossing bridges and moving through terrain others simomy cannot, but that it will be capable of fielding the same amount of firepower and active protection systems. Any soldier who's carried heavy loads for long will tell you that ounces equal pounds, in much the same way if a vehicle is liter the faster and more agile it is capable of being. When you build a medium tank your simply building a slower, heavier lite tank with far to much armor.
Thats what i thought an ifv would be the better decision against soft and light armor targets.

@@xloltimex38 to be fair the t90 is an excellent tank all around, and upgraded versions can easily go toe to toe with any other main battle tank. As for the 105mm main gun, such a gun is no good against the frontal armor of modern MBTS but is still capable of penetrating the side armor on such vehicles so it isnt useless.
The designers of the Harimau are more than likely aware of the criticisms laid out in your comment. Put simply, there are probably 4 reasons why Pindad would commit to such a project, and why the finished product would be satisfactory to their requirements.
1) Pindad are the Indonesian state-owned industrial defense concern. Projects such as this one expand upon their expertise and range, as well as their objectives toward self-sufficient defense industry. It's a bit similar to a Chinese nuclear submarine: it doesn't have to be perfect, so long as it provides a sort of experiential test-bed. It's the first step in a journey.
2) Given the topography and geography of both their frontiers and their interior, as well the necessities of deployment and delivery related to both the geography as well as the relatively limited logistical assets of the Indonesian armed forces, there are obvious size and weight limitations. These should be obvious upon tertiary examination and you are no doubt aware of them, so I won't go into any further detail.
3) No other country in SEA is currently manufacturing ANY indigenous tank of any size - albeit some nations would be more than capable of doing so, were they so inclined. Thus the Harimau takes on an element of national prestige, adding a political dimension.
As you point out, the design is certainly a compromise - if compared to its contemporaries -, however this is not unintentional. It doesn't need to be the most powerful tank in theatre, however it does require a certain versatility. I postulate that the rationale is somewhat similar to the logic behind the development of the battlecruiser prior to WW1; more maneuverable and nimble than a full size tank (especially in the rain-forest), more powerful than than anything else it might encounter (of course, that logic might prove to have a fatal flaw - HMS Hood, anyone?). A T90, as mentioned by someone else, might represent a better option in a tank vs. tank engagement, but this represents only one possible (and unlikely) scenario in the Harimaus' prospects of deployment. The more likely scenario is that it will not be deployed against vehicles of equal size, armor or armament. It will be deployed in support of dismounted or light infantry, in terrain unsuited to conventional armor, against opponents highly unlikely to employ tanks (if armor) of any size. It has an (arguably) fair chance against any MBTs it might encounter, were Indonesia ever to find itself in such an engagement; this allows Indonesia's defence planners slightly more flexibility in preparing for as wide a range of contingencies as possible, while reserving their heavier tanks for more offensive purposes. The Harimau fulfills the priority requirements of the Indonesian defense forces, while supplementing the lower ones.
4) The final reason is that it's pretty likely that both Turkey and Indonesia are aware that this sort of thing will be extremely attractive to a lot of potential customers who face similar topographical, infrastructural and/or financial limitations. Who wants to buy 1 Leopard 2 when you can buy 3 Pindad Harimau tanks (that might turn out to be an exaggeration, but you see my point)?

The thing is the side armor of most mbt can be penetrated by larg caliber autocannons 25-35mm you dont need a 105mm for that.

Kebangkitan industri Indonesia akhirnya kembali lagi
Memang meriam 105mm tergolong lemah untuk standar sekarang. Nggak akan mampu menandingi sejenis T-90, Abrams dan Leopard 2. Tapi cukup untuk menghancurkan APC, IFV dan kubu infantri. Soalnya overkill kalau pake Leopard 2 untuk menghancurkan target2 lunak seperti APC dan IFV. Jadi sebaiknya unit2 yonkav Harimau nanti tujuannya jadi pendukung yonif2 saat butuh bantuan tembakan. Jadi yonkav 1 dan yonkav 8, bisa fokus khusus untuk bertempur melawan MBT musuh.
Indahnya Indonesia ya emang gitu kok, ini buat support aja tapi kalo terpaksa lawan MBT udah ada APFSDS kok bisa aja bikin MBT KO dari samping. Kalo depan ya gabisa
