Philisophy behind it?.. It's very unique. 1. Indonesia are islands counrty and mostly isolated. Whoever want to attack them, they must bring their vehicles with them. From air or from the sea, mostly they can bring light and amphibious vehicles. And this system enough to be eat all of them. 2. Indonesia has a lot of mountains mountains and unregular urban areas. And all of that areas very rainy. Many big and small rivers divide that territory. Roads are not good. Terrain has a high density of plants. And this vehicle must be survive on that envinronment. Bcs of this it must be little more high than other tanks. (Not low like Japanese Type 16) 3. They want to use this vehicle not only direct fire support role. They also want to do indirect support role if its necessary. And this Cockerill system can do that up to the 18 km. (Like a howitzer) 4. In Indonesia, they have not lot of threats like ATGM's. Even the ppotential enemy bring that, high density trees and plants can be provide very good passive protection. Mostly RPGs and similar unguided systems are very serious threat. But... 5. In European battle theatre, infantry follow the heavy armored punch. Armored systems take the lead on battlefield. But in Indonesia it can not work bcs of nature and combat customs. Infantry fight and armored systems provide fire support behind them. Bcs of that unique philosophy and list of requirements, this different Tank happen. And it has a many potential user in Southeast Asia. Vietnamiese army openly interested this new vehicle already. Kaplan MT is the Turkish name. In indonesian language it name is Harimau. Both of this meanings is Tiger. And also it has a large interior and that feature provide good working environment for the crew. Many system can be add in this tank also in the future. Space and energy source is avaliable. Best regards...

From what I've read, this tanks purpose is to replace the aging AMX 13 and Scorpion tanks of the Indonesian army, while supplementing the Leopard 2RI. After all, Indonesia is a an archipelago with lots of mountain and jungles, so the idea of having a smaller chassis, half the weight of an mbt while carrying a 105mm gun is entertaining.
Yes you're right, because Indonesia is a tropical Nation so most of the terrain will be jungles, hills, rivers, muddy terrains. So it was designed to be a flexible medium tank for hard terrain, the reason it has a high figure is to make it easier when crossing rivers or mud and preventing the tank to drowned. And the purpose of the tank is to support infantries and not a head-on tank vs tank combat
CR BZ Perhaps, but in a forested area, or an area with a lot of hills, it could be useful due to its strong engine, and high speed. And to be honest, I think this would be more maneuverable than Russian designs. And Soviet designs... this is beyond their league. It should be faster, and mounting a better gun. Perhaps less armor, but that is a trade off for the higher speed.
@CR BZ this tank needs a very specific condition to fight i believe. its for tight space, wet and muddy jungle environment which another MBT couldnt and wouldnt dare to enter. so, at the very end, its medium tank vs infantry in the jungle. just be aware about anti-tank/rpg ambushes.
Surya Tanamas Harison please explain. I am confused on what makes your statement true. Yes, some parts of my statements are poorly worded, but that is not viable excuse.
Its going to replace our older tanks like AMX-13 and Scorpion 90. So yeah its designed to be like this. Just think it like Stryker MGS but with tracks. Also here in Indonesia its not wide flat grassy fields of Eastern Europe so spamming MBTs won't work. These boys are here to support Infantry, against IFV, APC, AFV, etc. With luck it could fight an MBT, but i wont advice it. Also fighting older MBTs with the 105mm works-ish, against old tanks like T-62, T-64, and who knows maybe T-72. Just think it like a mobile Anti-Tank gun but with tracks. Its a glass cannon basically.
fight an MBT i think the most it can do is fight T-55 but then again if the first shot missed the front plate or even the turret wont be able to withstand T-55 shell penetration which can penetrate around 200mm or rolled steel armor from 250m distance
@@dominicalvin as i said, its a glass cannon. It packs a heavy punch for its size, but its not designed to take a beating. But because its much more modern, it have a better chance to find, and shoot first. Sure it won't fight T-72B3, but early like T-72A will definitely pentra-able from the front.
AFAIK. Regarding indonesian def ministry research, they made prediction that trends of threat in warfare in south east asia till 20-30 yrs later no mbt vs mbt. @Ulf Knudsen A tank that weighs more than twice that of the PT-76 trying to be amphibious? I'd give you guys a clap on the back if you actually did it. Though it'd probably be only amphibious with a 'hull' strapped onto it and when on land it'd have to strip away the hull. I doubt it'd be fully amphibious at all times like the pt 76 or Sprut SD
@Ulf Knudsen I did not insult you anywhere in my paragraph. The first sentence can be misconstrued as such and I am sorry it came out that way. My comment was actually a reply to both the original commenter and you. I did not mean to offend you nor did I mean to belittle you
Well in overall assumption.. It's the Tiger vs. M4 discussion^^ Every soldier would prefer bigger gun and more protection even if mobility goes a bit down or more. But the reality is, that you can't "spam" MBT's like you could with medium Tanks. You have only 3 to crew it and train before, instead of 4 or 5. You don't need that much of resources to built it. Battlefields are not static and 3 dimensional, so when modern day infantry operated rpgs can destroy mbt in cerctain conditions, what would those be? Ambushes, fast flanking maneuvers, shooting out of fortified positions, snapping on a ridge line and relocate...so all comes down to visibility, mobility and terrain, armor gives you no value at some point (only against relatively small callibers). And the Terrain becomes the point of make or brake. Mbt are bad in cities, they're big compared to the surroundings and have less space to operate. But sometimes you need serious firepower, suppression fast and intimidating. Whole building can be destroyed with 30 or 50 cals yes, but a 10.5 does this to, in one hit not swing. Also it has a smaller profile compared to mbt and a not so much greater as all sort of relatively high armored wheeled vehicles or personal carriers. I for myself would prefer a good medium tank over an mbt, most at the time, and that because of european terrain and the overall rule (trinity of tankdesign gun >mobility> armor). I mean, small bridges, streets, forests, lot of hills, even rocky mountain paths, when wet pretty annoying terrain always, so you want to be lighter, with a lower ground compression, highly mobile but capable to deliver as much force as possible... Is not bad, not at all, mbt also can be disabled (tracked, blinded, engine hit or somply suppressed due to heavy fire). I think the term "medium tank" has to be changed to "main support tank" for that vehicle. In my opinion, the issue is not if it is "on meta" because it is, the issue is how many MST can you crew, produce and train for the cost and time effort compared to one fully fletched MBT and its crew. And in case of a war, getting faster and easier firepower to the troops is always good... So I like this trend, if it is one, I would'nt wonder when it becomes one again.
Well , to be honest .... Those leopard 2 were putted in an akward position for the indonesian army guys . We were aware on the plus side of the equations yet it was too big , obscure , tend to bogged down a lot in harsh terrains and long list of logistical footprints . Hence , this where the concept comes out again . And after a very carefuly calculated and calibrated for an ideal tanks coverages for the equator it was decided that we need at least 887 minimums and 1230 for an ideal number to be spread around as a compliment of 350 + of MBT's ( we allready have 90+ so it was definite to add some more ) . Mind you that i haven't include an IFV and APC ( based on the same chasis and hull ) numbers in the equation.. So , why don't we makes our own AFV then ? The number do justified the endeavour anyway ..
I can imagine that, basically that is what I mean in the first place. Why bothering with a bigger weapon, that must be covered in better logistics and is not really suited for the terrain anyway and must be bought from outside.. The best alternative is, the one that every country is really capable of and makes in their equation sense. As I said, I like this Idea hands down :)
Once again Indonesia shows it means business I am really impressed with the Indonesian armed forces threat assessment and their willingness to get the best bang for their buck. First it was the purchase of 2 Danish frigate of the iver huitfeldt class (cheap, versatile, low running cost, goes far on a tank of gas) and now its the KAPLAN. The Indonesians definitely knows what they are expecting to face on the battlefield of tomorrow and are willing to stick to their assessments and either develop or buy whats needed to counter that. Just wished more European nations did the same rather then buying wholesale from uncle Sam to appease the US diplomatically.
European buying US arms are like thugs forcing you to buy a supercar, by pointing a gun at you. You can't bargain, and you must buy thos fancy stuffs 😆 But I love the idea of European Force, that could show dignity & defiance at once.
This vehicle is designed to support infantry movement and also support their mbt. Its lightweight can easily cross a lightweight bridges or poor roads which is common in Indonesia without damaging it and also muddy environment. Last year their army tested an leopard 2a4 and 2ri in joint exercise and one of them get stucked in the mud and have to be pull out by crane. In my opinion this mt also suitable to support amphibious landing by the marines.
@@ikill-98 this vehicle is intended to support infantry over difficult region like muddy or hilly terrain where regular mbt can't even cross through. Also our AMX-13 and Scorpion fleets are aging and if we didn't have replacement we can't provide our infantry with adequate support
It has the same mm size main gun as the M60 Tank I was trained on which is 105mm as you said but the M60 was a Main Battle Tank. I enjoyed the M60 very much and miss it. I was in the USMC from the early 80's to the late 80's. My first MOS was Motor Transport. I miss the camaraderie we had in the Corps. I have found nothing like it since. Semper Fi !
If you miss the brotherhood, check out the Masons. Most of the growth in Freemasonry is coming from veterans looking for camaraderie without having to immerse themselves in the alcohol of the VFW or Legion halls.
@@Aye738 I can't say, because I don't have practical experience with 105 vs. current armor. The way the tank was described and spec'd, it uses standard NATO ammo, which Matsimus and many commentators say is insufficient in a modern anti armor role. Eddie Lane notes that his USMC M60 was armed with a 105mm, but things have changed since the 1980s. That being said, in the role I describe, it is unlikely that it would face a state of the art MBT because they are too heavy for the infrastructure of the AO. A 30 ton vehicle can go many places that a 60-plus ton behemoth simply can't go. The Soviets and Germans lost quite a few tanks to weak bridging in WWII, and U.S. heavy tanks couldn't cross the Rhine until reinforced bridges were in place long after the bridgeheads were consolidated.

"It's a RPG magnet" Yeah good luck shooting RPG in rainforest, Using mine in jungle proven to be more deadly than an RPG. Indonesia army already have Leo specifically modified for rainforest, but that tank is to wide and to short to survive in the rainforest, at least this tank provide more mobility over MBT in certain place. Moreover Kaplan is their first tank for nation that still growing and classified as 3rd world countries that is a very good milestones for their industry, so stop saying that tank is ugly or worse than common mbt, its not like our country first tank is perfect.
This Vehicle proven Mine and Blast resistance with also PULAT its anti RPG!!! If they have enough RPG rocket they can destroy this tank!!! And I think India was the first Third World country to developed MBT (also this tank is good looking but I can say a bit worse on Protection)
I think your understating its roll. These types of tanks arnt necessarily meant to take on main battle tanks like the M1 or Challenger, but to be a heavier infantry support vehicle and mobile firepower base. Similar to what the M8 MGS system in the 90s was supposed to be. A lighter vehicle for specific roles or places in the world. Honestly something the US and UK should look at adding for mobile (airdropped) firepower vehicle to secure a beachhead/area while heavy firepower is brought in.
Brabble Master why when America hads aircraft carriers which carry more aircraft then multiply country’s combined kinda hard to drive any type of armoured anything when GBUs and AGMs and Hellfires are raining down also the standoff capability these country’s have now a days
It's easy to underestimate this type of tool. You cannot airlift any of the mbt today. It takes weeks to ship transport a battalion of M1s today. These can be placed on scene in a matter of hours. Also most MBT cannot work in cities without destroying all the infrastructure. Most conflict s occuring today are in an urban setting. This vehicle can easily tolerate most battalion size weapons unlike the light tanks. The 105mm high explosive round can settle most disputes and even though this medium tank is not designed to confront the MBT s, it can carry and fire the depleted uranium SABOT round which can seriously damage or destroy many of the MBT s today. Alot of people laught when the light Sheridan first showed up on the scene, but no one laughed when it fired it's huge 155mm or it's wire guided Shelyla 2 mile missile. People also laught at the Merkava. That is until they mounted the Rhinmetal softbore 120mm. All these tools are perfect if used tactically and with wisdom. Al...eng.
No, it cannot withstand even infantry company level anti-tank weapons like modern RPG warheads, 84 CG, or similar. They will damage or disable this vehicle. But this is not to say that this is not a good vehicle. Even an MBT may be damaged or disabled by infantry anti-tank weapons as the war in Syria and earlier IDF incursion into Lebanon has shown. This is a game changer when you consider that what Indonesia will likely face in an internal conflict will be insurgents with no AFV of any kind. Or in the case of an invasion from e.g. Australia, the invader can only bring light armor at first.
@@therover65 it's not meant to exchange fire with an mbt. That why it can go 65 miles an hour. It depends on speed, stealth and first hit. It's not meant to stand alone, but to be accompanied by accessory units. This is what most arm chair generals don't understand. None if this units are meant to stand alone including mbts.
they did equip 105 on AMX 13. although Kaplan MT are planned to replace them since there are a limit of what you can do on an old tank design like AMX 13 with their upgrade etc to make them equal with newer tanks
I think that’s Pindad’s civilian test drivers,... besides a tank helmet isn’t supposed to protect your head against rounds, but from bumping your head against the tank interior. Better than those Russian leather padding helmets IMO.
I think one of the reasons for picking this over something with an auto cannon is that in psychological warfare. It is well documented that in close in urban or jungle combat, that tank gun fire rapidly routes enemy forces. In Iraq the M1 cleared out insurgents faster than the Bradley, despite the Bradley being more effective in engagements. Great video as always man!
Yep definately, Indonesia faces many "internal" issues and one of these showing up with a 105mm would almost certainly put a dampner on "activities" also the ability to lob 105 HE into remote vallies 18km away makes this a very useful adition to the security forces an easily deployable force multiplier that saves lives both of the security forces and of potential insurgents by ending things before they begin.
I remembered few months back a "Russian Expert" said the tank looked like Panzer IV, and its also pretty much like the Panzer IV, a glass cannon. High powered gun for the size, but also thin armor compared to other tanks. Also like Panzer IV, its a Medium Tank.
With autoloader, excellent mobility and superb sensors this "little" box can ambush any MBT and put into it 3-4 rounds and "duck" into cover in time if anyone is still alive and have the means to return fire - in its intended, very difficult operating environment.

Wow this is definitely a new branch from the the usual US and Russian vehicles you used to reviewed.. Thanks Mat for reviewing this unique tank from my country. This tank model is certainly nothing new, but very uncommon in this era where MBT rules the tank market. With the armamament of 105mm cannon, 7.62mm coax, and pretty thin armour, this vehicle looks more like a tracked IFV than a tank by current standard.. However, I think it is suitable to be used here in Indonesia, if not most of South East Asian countries due to it lighter weight (Here in Indonesia, there are many bridges over rivers that are often too small/weak to support crossing MBTs). And also it should become a great replacement to our aging French AMX tanks from the 60s/70s...

It strikes me (as far as a country like Indonesia is concerned) as having everything somebody would need and nothing that they don't. It's not overly heavy, has good mobility, packs a punch and is based on off-the-shelf proven technology. I think it's a great piece of kit. And it looks cool too.
I can't unsee it that way again And yes, it's the Toucano of tanks. thanks Carlo. Correction: I'd say it's not, since Toucano would be light tanks of the plane.
Philippines is buying some of these MT's. It's very suitable to our country actually. With its light weight ( compared to other tanks ) it can cross our bridges and won't do much damage on our low quality roads. After the Marawi siege, our armed forces saw the need for fire support vehicles and the Harmaw Hitam ( Black Cat/Black Panther ) could fill that role. This tank is close to perfect to our needs.

For those RPG happy. This "tank" never meant to be a spearhead on front. Indonesian always want it to be infantry support. If they want something heavy enough to break enemy's frontline, they already have Leopard 2 to do so.
Weirdly enough yes. At 32 tons it's not quite enough to classify itself as an MBT as it just simply doesn't weigh that much. It's also a bit too heavy to be a light tank(The cut off point being 25~ tons) So a medium tank seems to fit it's weight
@@Barri2410 Still pretty decent though. It also has an APS but I'm not sure if it's a hard APS that can more or less kill any missiles or soft APS that can block missiles from locking on but anything dumb fired or close can still kill it
Well, the reason why this is a Medium Tank because the known current Main Battle Tanks weights over 30 tons. This Tank however is designed to survive RPG's, take out fortifications and armored vehicles (either an AFV and a Heavy Tank) and Support Infantry. As for the harsher Environments for the current MBT, this is designed to go through.
Looks like our allies are learning. We are still coming up with stuff but it looks like our allies can hold up. Either way this vehicle (probaly) has some potential but yeah. Thx for another awesome vid Mat. (Hello from the U.S.ofA.)
Got issues with 105s being obsolete, I hope you have changed your mind. Your opinion is understable considering that you opined it a long time ago. 105s is more relevant nowadays, not just those cash strapped countries but the US is considering this kind of medium tank with the 105; M10 Booker.
You know, in places like Bangladesh, where heavy tanks with more than 60 tons weight are just a huge target, these can be extremely effective. Soil here is so soft that any modern day MBT gets stranded. Tracks stop moving, the tank just digs itself into the ground. This is the sole reason why we can't use T-90s and other ultra modern tanks and have to stick with Chinese crap or keep upgrading old Soviet tanks. This is both a good and a bad news. Good news is, any incoming enemy calvary is totally welcome to get stranded and be used as a target board (which has happened before. It didn't end well for the enemies). The bad one is, we can't use heavy armour backup. We use MBT-2000s, they are good, still too heavy that it's useless in most parts of the country. So we've been using upgraded T-69s a lot.
People need to understand that Indonesia is pretty much a tropical country with woods everywhere. So a medium tank won't ever come face to face with a mbt. It's a heavy infantry support to suppress the enemy Frontline.
At a first glance it almost tricked me into believing this is an APC with powerful 105mm.indonesia certainly got what it takes to build a handsome and effective tank.30 ton is almost unheard of in today's MBT arena.informative video.👍👍👍
This seems like it would be perfect in Asia, the south east islands where any invasion would have tanks that are too heavy for local infrastructure, but anything light enough would be outmatch by the Kaplan MT
watched matsimus fot the better part of I guess 3 or 4 years now. I never before thought that a tank developed in my country would be featured here. kinda awesome that were building a tank that's purpose built for our projected battlfield requirements. lets hope this will be a good jumping off point to a fully fledged Indonesian developed and Indonesian built MBT. just in case we need those bad boys.
The head of development team is from PINDAD, not FNSS. FNSS got license to sell this to mid-east, europe & Africa market while PINDAD focusing on Asia & South America market. But thank you for FNSS cooperation, hope this program beneficial for both parties.
It seems that a lot of people are interested in “light tanks” like the Kaplan, the 2S25 Sprut, Type 15, and soon the Griffin Tank. Plus some wheeled vehicles like the B1 Centauro, M1128 MGS, and AMX 13 RCR. Countries are interested in lighter, possibly air-transportable or amphibious vehicles that can carry a 100-125mm full pressure gun, since carrying such a weapon otherwise usually involves an MBT. This also seems to coincide with some countries or militaries looking to phase out MBTs like the US Marine Corp did.
Contextually, Indonesia will probably never fight a conventional war against any major power. Military doctrine here is shaped by experiences in fighting the Dutch for independence through guerrilla warfare (one of the first army chiefs of staff wrote a whole book about guerrilla warfare, which an observer commented was like 'Mao without the politics'). After that it was informed by a lot of counter-insurgency ops against rebellious army officers and separatist groups (with one long fight against pro-independence guerrillas in Timor-Leste), some of which continue today. The Kaplan, like you said, is well-suited for Indonesia (we do have leopards, but I feel like we'll get a lot more bang for our buck with the MT rather than those). My best argument against not having it on a lighter vehicle, other than protection, is that the sight of a tank-like vehicle like this is prolly more likely to scare the shit out of insurgents rather than an APC/IFV.
Our northern sea has been claimed by china as their traditional fishing zones if these man made islands keep unimpeded they will push to southern parts to secure malacca strait or kra channel in thailand which they want to build to undermine Singapore and his western allies over hegemony in south east asia and Malacca strait.
phirdaws ady this is true, but even if we end up fighting against China, we won’t challenge them in a conventional sense, we’re quite ill equipped to do that. The whole structure of the Indonesian military today, with military commands that go down all the way to villages is designed to either: observe/oppress elements that the military considers to be subversive or anti-nationalist, or to mobilise the populace to fight in a guerrilla conflict a la 1945-1949.

Matsimus, You Are Wrong! there are still Heavy/Medium/Light Tanks in service in various countries around the world. Example: Heavy: these would be the M1 Abrams Series, Leopard 2 Series, Merkava Series, and the Challenger 1 & 2. Medium: these are your Soviet/Russian T-72/T-80/T-90 Series tanks as well as the Armata; the AMX-56 Leclerc, and Japanese Type-10 Light: these are your M8 AGS, your Sprut SD, your PL-01, K21-105,etc. we may call the "Medium" and "Heavy" tanks as "Main Battle Tanks"; however there are some 40 ton "medium" MBTs such as the T-72 and Type 10. while at the Same time their are also 60-70 ton "heavy" MBTs such as the Abrams, Leopard and Merkava. while both the 70 ton M1A2 SEP Abrams tank and 40 ton T-72 are both called main battle tanks on paper, and are both design to close with and destroy the enemy; the significant difference in weight and Armor that these tanks have, I reality has consequences when it comes to the tactical and Operational employment, and the Logistics involved Using either a 40-50 ton "Medium MBT" or a 60-70 ton "Heavy MBT" in other words; the M1 Abrams/Leopard 2/Merkava is a Tiger tank, and the T-72/Type-10/AMX-56 Leclerc is a Sherman.
Matsimus, unfortunately you get some facts mixed up. ERA is generally much lighter than addon-passive armor. The armor packages listed would not have a snowball's chance in hell of stopping RPG fire without ERA. As such while not publicly stated, it almost certainly would take either a slat armor system or an ERA package to protect the front and sides of the tank. Also one item you failed to mention was shown in the video you used from the manufacturer. The text on the screen mentioned that the tank also could be used as artillery. Most tanks can do this, however, what would have been more interesting would be the maximum elevation of the tank cannon. If it can achieve high elevation, this tank might also be used as self-propelled artillery. THAT would make A LOT more sense as it would kill two birds with one stone to a limited extent. Granted not as versatile as a dedicated 105mm SP arty system with separate powder charge loads, but still more versatile than a simple anti-tank gun. Another crucial bit of information left out was regarding it's ammunition stowage and whether it features blow out panels like on modern MBT's. I would assume so as it looks like it has a turret bustle mounted ammunition magazine with nifty digital system on the ammo resupply door. I imagine that digital system controls the magazine feed system to speed up topping off the ammo in the bustle. Some note the flat looking bottom of the hull. This is because there is a inner v shaped hull. Above the initial flat surface, there are likely to be either ERA modules (to break-up shape charged mines that work similar to HEAT rounds) or layers of composite armor. Another item not noticed are the four large attachment points on the upper hull. Most of the Indonesian islands have extensive train systems. Also, it is an ENORMOUS archipelago made up of countless islands. As such this feature allows for rapid and easy loading and offloading capability by crane and for tie-down points once loaded. So when you add in all of those facts, this tank becomes MUCH more understandable for use by island nations like Indonesia. Tracks also make sense (instead of wheels) not because of a lack of roads, but because their main island is so densely populated that often it's very hard to turn around a big wheeled vehicle quickly like a Stryker in tight urban areas. What we also don't see is the track width. Usually tracks distribute weight on the ground better for crossing areas like rice patties (one of the most common terrain features in Indonesia). So all in all, this tank is ideal for Indonesia. I also imagine that it will have the capability of accepting turrets with a 120mm cannon or other types of turrets for specialized roles. These types of vehicles tend to spawn a family of vehicles. Finally....Matsimus you left out a key fact that Turkey is also the other main nation co-developing this tank. The speed of this tank and agility (mobility) make it ideal for desert warfare while its small size and ability to go up steep slopes are ideal for mountainous terrain. Furthermore you left out the critical bit of info that the PULAT Active Protection System can be mounted on it. This would give the tank far more protection against RPG's and ATGM's. This would make a lot of sense in a RPG/ATGM intensive environment like the Syrian battlefield that Turkey is involved in. Given Turkish losses of much more expensive and much more heavily armored MBT's (including Leapord 2s and Sabra Mk2's) to Russian-made ATGM's, I imagine that development of the PULAT Active Protection System is a high priority for Turkey. Its also interesting that I have not seen any videos lately of Turkish MBT's getting destroyed in Syria by the Kurdish YPG forces. So it must be working well. I am sure Indonesia likewise will implement such a system.
Research the CMI - Cockerill Defense 3105 turret. It's modular, and can easily be upgraded and integrated with 4x (2 double launchers each side) Spike, Javelin, TOW-3, even Brimstone. The 105mm gun has the right punch for direct CS HE, squash heads for bunkers, and APFSDS will still take out pretty much all vehicles short of MBT, which the optional LP90mm HEAT also can do. Both the 105 and 90mm guns can fire Falarick ATGM variants as well. The air assault feature for this hunter/killer AFV is what really opens up the operational capabilities for marine and airborne forces. I'm curious about its' indirect fire possibilities with rocket assisted guided shells.
This is a great idea. Remember, the German Army in WWII used mostly a medium tank while the Tigers were for smashing through. Additionally, the allies too focused on the medium tank such as the Sherman.
The main reason for this tank invention is to replace Indonesian Army ageing fleet of AMX-13 also due to Indonesia's terrain (a lot of jungle, mountains, swamps and river) so it makes sense why they wanted a lighter tank than an MBT like Leopard 2.

Personal opinion If Philippines is going to buy a tank it must be amphibious. What the Philippines need is Naval and Air Power the setting is a nightmare for a tank.

Tanks won't really have use in my country despite how cool it would be seeing my country having MBT the reason why i say this because of our geography our country is too far from other countries and our terrorist in here don't really posses a tank or even IFV for that matter and their are tons of scattered islands unlike japan. If Phil. really needed a new Armored vehicle we would probably choose AFV or a Light Amphibious Vehicle MBT's won't really work because we don't have any big ships that can transport them what my country urgently need is Naval and Airpower.
@@ggoddkkiller1342 Tanks for landing on beaches is a good idea in paper. To be honest the role of tanks in a country full of islands will probably mostly for artilery. And yes the river and lake crossing is the main reason why I think amphibious vehicles is a must even if its not a tank. an APC is more useful or an IFV pack with anti-air systems is far more usable in this setting of forests, beaches, and mud.
@Joshua Ngau Ajang I agree it is essential. With the country's looming threat from its neighbour the country needs all the help it could get. But if war did occur ( hopefully not) it would probably result in guerilla warfare just like the American-Vietnam war.
I see that front slope angle and little blister on the turret above the gun and it makes me thing it's got some real nice gun depression. that's a good sign in a tank made for terrain that tanks don't normally perform well in.
This would've been perfect for the Philippine Army. If PA had these during the Marawi Siege, it would've been easier and quicker to neutralize those ISIS militants who positioned themselves behind concrete structures.

Thank you for the Objective analysis, Matsimus. Had been watching your video since a year or two and I found it impressive. This tank has a HUGE INDONESIAN BIAS. Some biases even said that this thing can even out other tanks. Your analysis confirms what I believe to be true: This tank is unique in itself because 105 mm is obsolete for engaging other armour, and it is best to stay in light or medium roles. Tanks like these are considered obsolete because they are replaced by IFVs with ATGMs like what you said. However, this tank is not battle-proven. It should be put to test someday.
It's an AFV with a really BIG Gun! This works well in countries like ours, so far we haven't got any. I think an AFV with 40mm and atgms truly suits our country's needs militarily speaking. Great vid mate!

It's really a fire support vehicle/infantry support vehicle than a tank. The level of protection really means it should not be called a tank. It's really like a modern version of the Saladin turret on an M113 that the Aussie army used - the FSV Fire Support Vehicle.
thank you for covering this vehicle matsimus. for conclusion, if you know what south east asia terrain is, then that's what this vehicle made for. and another unique feature is, the gun can elevate up to about 42^. that mean it can do indirect fire support, just like artillery.
It's a modern day Sherman, sherman was an infantry support tank and was never designed as a MBT , I think this tank would excell in support rolls , something the Abrams struggles with in a counter insergency roll.
10:22 that booming was perfect, i see what you did there ;)
Philisophy behind it?..
(Not low like Japanese Type 16)
3. They want to use this vehicle not only direct fire support role. They also want to do indirect support role if its necessary. And this Cockerill system can do that up to the 18 km. (Like a howitzer)

Well in overall assumption..
It's the Tiger vs. M4 discussion^^
Every soldier would prefer bigger gun and more protection even if mobility goes a bit down or more.
I cant agree more 🖒🖒🖒
Well , to be honest ....

This design Karplan is very similar to the Stingray, an air-mobile design when it is without optional armour packages bolted on.

Hello from Indonesia ☺
This is Turkish tank
@@kazmuz8678 its a joint development between indonesia and turkey.
Mr.Matsimus,Kaplan is Modern Medium Weight tank is unique tank.
One thing you should know,Russian tank have bad gun depression if used in indonesia
Sorry, just correcting

It strikes me (as far as a country like Indonesia is concerned) as having everything somebody would need and nothing that they don't. It's not overly heavy, has good mobility, packs a punch and is based on off-the-shelf proven technology.
I think it's a great piece of kit. And it looks cool too.
WOOO thanks Matsimus, watched your livestream and jokingly made request for you to review this tank, aand you truly delivers!

@@syaondri Thank you, I stand corrected. It feels kinda good to call it black panther though..our special forces, The Philippine Army Rangers, are called Musang ( Black Panther ).Harimaw also closely sounds like the tagalog word for monster ( Halimaw ).
I'm a simple man. I see Pindad and my country's flag, I press LIKE.
For those RPG happy. This "tank" never meant to be a spearhead on front. Indonesian always want it to be infantry support. If they want something heavy enough to break enemy's frontline, they already have Leopard 2 to do so.
Medium tank?
Weirdly enough yes. At 32 tons it's not quite enough to classify itself as an MBT as it just simply doesn't weigh that much. It's also a bit too heavy to be a light tank(The cut off point being 25~ tons) So a medium tank seems to fit it's weight
@@alephkasai9384 also, the armour weren't as good as most MBTs (STANAG 4869 lv. 4-5)
@@Barri2410 Still pretty decent though. It also has an APS but I'm not sure if it's a hard APS that can more or less kill any missiles or soft APS that can block missiles from locking on but anything dumb fired or close can still kill it
Yes this tank I heard that this tank is going to be equipped with PULAT Aps
105 gun, weak armor and high mobility? If you asked me any other day i would say fire support vehicle.
Turkey - Indo !!!!!
I do hope that my country the Philippines, shall buy one of these tanks. Indonesia and Philippines have the same terrain and these tanks are perfect.
People talking crap about this vehicle forgetting that it’s designed for the environment it’s meant to operate in.
Good news is, any incoming enemy calvary is totally welcome to get stranded and be used as a target board
(which has happened before.

No one said that it's a half Turkish half Indonesian vehicle. FNSS is a Turkish company. Even "Kaplan" means "Tiger" in Turkish.
In Indonesia we call it Harimau or Tiger
@Kemal Ulucan ı came to say that
The head of development team is from PINDAD, not FNSS.
I assume the 105mm is a cost/benifit ratio of size of anti infantry round vs ammunition capacity (biggest bang without limiting ammo)
and still perfect against IFVs etc.
the indonesian even upgraded / uparmored / retrofitted their old AMX-13 to hold the new CMI Defence cockerill 105mm gun lol , www.militer.or.id/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/1505585565_tank-amx-13-perkuat-alutsista-yonkav-12-beruang-cakti.jpg
Matsimus, You Are Wrong! there are still Heavy/Medium/Light Tanks in service in various countries around the world. Example:
Heavy: these would be the M1 Abrams Series, Leopard 2 Series, Merkava Series, and the Challenger 1 & 2.
Medium: these are your Soviet/Russian T-72/T-80/T-90 Series tanks as well as the Armata; the AMX-56 Leclerc, and Japanese Type-10
Light: these are your M8 AGS, your Sprut SD, your PL-01, K21-105,etc.
we may call the "Medium" and "Heavy" tanks as "Main Battle Tanks"; however there are some 40 ton "medium" MBTs such as the T-72 and Type 10. while at the Same time their are also 60-70 ton "heavy" MBTs such as the Abrams, Leopard and Merkava. while both the 70 ton M1A2 SEP Abrams tank and 40 ton T-72 are both called main battle tanks on paper, and are both design to close with and destroy the enemy; the significant difference in weight and Armor that these tanks have, I reality has consequences when it comes to the tactical and Operational employment, and the Logistics involved Using either a 40-50 ton "Medium MBT" or a 60-70 ton "Heavy MBT" in other words; the M1 Abrams/Leopard 2/Merkava is a Tiger tank, and the T-72/Type-10/AMX-56 Leclerc is a Sherman.
Perfect tank for fighting in forest/jungle.

This makes it more sense.

Medium tanks = Combined Arms warfare
Mainly they are the SPGS of the modern together
This is a great idea. Remember, the German Army in WWII used mostly a medium tank while the Tigers were for smashing through. Additionally, the allies too focused on the medium tank such as the Sherman.
The main reason for this tank invention is to replace Indonesian Army ageing fleet of AMX-13 also due to Indonesia's terrain (a lot of jungle, mountains, swamps and river) so it makes sense why they wanted a lighter tank than an MBT like Leopard 2.
Nice intro about the problematic and fair analysis
Great work Matsimus
In my opinion this could do pretty good in urban warfare as a support unit to an advancing infantry unit
Why the MBT fixation? When this will likely not engage them. How does it stack up against IFVs and as an infantry support vehicle.
13:22 "Harimau" in Indonesian means tiger. So this is basically Indonesian Tiger Tank.
thank you Matsimus for discussing MMWT from my country and if anyone is still confused why the Lower plate is big enough because it uses a V hull to ward off a mine explosion and btw in Indonesia we called it Harimau or Tiger.

In all seriousness though considering Indonesian terrain and enemies/potential enemies this tank's really practical.
It is an armored tracked fighting vehicle with turreted mounted main gun. By definition alone this is a tank regardless of your opinion.
Camouflage the tank with a lot of grass and branches in the jungle and it can defeat an M1A2 from the side
with the propagation of Thermal scopes wide and large, my thinking is that going to be rather costly tactics.. you might replace the hardwares easily, but veteran crews going to be very difficult to replace..

Tanks for landing on beaches is a good idea in paper.
@Joshua Ngau Ajang
I agree it is essential.

It should be put to test someday.

for conclusion, if you know what south east asia terrain is, then that's what this vehicle made for. and another unique feature is, the gun can elevate up to about 42^. that mean it can do indirect fire support, just like artillery.
If your enemy has a tank, don't use this tank. If they don't have a tank like 99% of battles you're good. Winning system.
It's a modern day Sherman, sherman was an infantry support tank and was never designed as a MBT , I think this tank would excell in support rolls , something the Abrams struggles with in a counter insergency roll.
