    Had a nearly exact same experience with DEXA. It’s great. And my visceral fat was higher than it should be. It is a life-changing epiphany just as you said.

      Hi David! Thank you - that’s very kind! Well we’ll see how it goes as I’m chasing a 10 PB this year…! Are you still testing or is it Audaxs now?

      Sub 23 yes.... good target - tough but fair challenge. For me it's getting back to anything. I'll not tt seriously but will ride a few against myself locally and will as look to build the distance to mental Audax rides again at some point as well as, like you, some other bonkers challenges - long days out and overnights. I'll see you on the road sometime. @@1stElement

    This was a great video. I loved the presentation style. I have some “Smart” scales. I wasn’t sure of their fat measuring accuracy until I updated my age by 10 years which immediately increased my fat% from below 20% to 43%. A proper hospital fat scan last April (not DEXA unfortunately so no really detailed data) tells me I’m 23.3% fat, of which a large proportion is likely to be visceral fat. DEXA scan will be requested at this year’s annual health screening.

    • @1stElement
      @1stElement  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was shocked at those scales - I had one and expected maybe 2-5% accuracy… I’d suggest reading that reference paper, it’s quite eye opening! And asking for it in your screening is a great idea - it should be standard procedure IMHO..!! Thanks for your lovely comments, Hamish!

    This is a very interesting video. A lot of very useful information to be working with. Going to be really interesting to see how the results change in 4 weeks.
    Also very well editted, laugh a few times even though it was serious info.

      Haha - thanks Mike - well, you know, it’s important to keep some perspective - you have to try to enjoy the journey, even if the news is sobering (pun intended…) - otherwise it all becomes serious and people start to think that to live life to the max you have to be boring… and that’s defo not the case… and yep - I’ve not had the best nov/dec in preparation for the next DEXA scan to be fair - so I have to look at how I deal with it - but if a perfect storm - bike needing repair, then poorly, the Xmas…

    I was going to comment that I always watch your vids anyway, as you don’t know that and you should do! But this one was especially interesting and really enlightening.. so thanks. Id be really interested to get this done myself as I would think I’m probably in a similar position to you - I don’t think I will be in any lean categories for sure! Good luck with your next few weeks and next scan

      Thanks mate - I’ll message you for that run. The irony is with visceral fat, Chris said he had people come in that looks both malnourished and morbidly obese who had perfect visceral fat - none of really know for sure without one of these… try and get it done - we can drive down together!

    How did this make me feel? Genuinely reinforced my determination to stop boozing. I heard quite a bit about visceral fat but never put so bluntly (that's a compliment). Yeah, definitely gonna look at a Dexa scan. P.S. your skeleton was funny though 😂

    Yep...5kg for a head. Now you know why posture (especially for those with desk jobs) is so important for your overall spine. On areo bars time trialling... yep thats a massive amount of weight your head builds to, stuck out front there once some physics is applied.

    Chrikey thank goodness I’ve lost almost 6 stone. I have the Garmin Scales and it did say in Connect the other day as it happens I need to pay attention to my body fat % (although that was over Xmas period). It did rise then but has since dropped back to normal readings where I usually am. I do still need to improve a little though. My BMI is correct, interesting vid👍

    • @1stElement
      @1stElement  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know..!! Yep - that 6 stone is a far bigger life saver than I bet you realised! And I considered getting some smart scales but decided to spend the money on a Dexa scan instead - after I’d read loads of papers on their accuracy and consistency! I might buy some now and test it against the actual scan in future..! Seriously - great work Gez. You’ve made a massive difference to your and your families lives…

    • @elizabethmcgivern4609
      @elizabethmcgivern4609 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James really interesting video thanks. I didn't realise the DEXA was used for info on anything other than bones. I have had one as a result of being Coeliac (apparently we don't absorb Ca like people without the condition do even if it's well regulated) I assume you got a report explaining the results not just the numbers sheet?

    • @1stElement
      @1stElement  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elizabethmcgivern4609 hi Elizabeth - thanks for your kind comments on the vid - yes, indeed you do get a guide to understanding the numbers (which is reference 6 in the description actually) - and Chris who ran the scan explained it all to me though - yep, DEXA scans are used a lot by the NHS to look at bone density for people like yourself and osteoporosis etc - but it is also the only way to know for sure what your body is comprised of - now, I do t know whether the dexa was set up for that when you had it done or whether it automatically does all three components but next time you go (if you do) it might be worth an ask - I promise it’ll enlighten you!!

    lift full body weights 3x a week
    eat 1g.lb of body weight on protein
    eat in 300-500 calorie deficit

      Thanks so much Parker! Just got into kettlebells and taking classes, actually having around 2g/kg of protein (as per Peter Attia’s ODA Vs RDA suggestion) and 300-500c is really where I end up with the intermittent fasting - I’m just skipping brekky really… when I do t do those three things it all goes to pot..!!

      @parkerkerth8446 I was rewatching #limitless with my wife last night - what stoked me about Peter is how ‘normal’ he looks - it’s so refreshing that someone that has all this knowledge and tools at his disposal, he doesn’t look like a freak - I’ve just made a video about body image to go out next week actually. I find so many people spout bro-science and extremes - Attia is refreshingly honest, practical and relevant!
