As always, so thought provoking. I watch youtube (you included!) During my bike turbo sessions, but its horrendous how often I hear clients say "i havent had time to do my exercises". Complete rubbish. They just chose to use their time to do something else. I challenge them to look at their phone usage, and then have just this conversation- why is spending x hours on social media more important to you than getting your x pain under control. So sad how much of an addiction it is

And it seems that it’s such an ‘ok’ way to just bimble your way through life and spend SO much time - that’s the issue, right? We’ve always watched TV and for hours a night (I mean genetically - for decades ‘we’ have) - and even that for the most part is time wasted - but we do need downtime - for sure - and it’s entertainment and enjoyment for sure. But here’s the thing - when I see the words ‘binge worthy’ in Netflix I think to myself - they wouldn’t market booze as binge worthy… and Tik Tok is just shot of alcohol for the sake of getting drunk.
Choosing a film or a TV series/documentary and giving it your full attention is choosing, savouring and enjoying a great bottle of wine for the taste and complexity of the drink - not for getting drunk.
So why do so many of us seem to not correlate the two? Myself included. It’s hard for us to curate our feeds for quality and deliberation as it’s about engagement and keeping people on platforms - and why? Because at the core of it all Google (who own TH-cam) and Facebook (who own Instagram) are advertising companies - the sooner people realise this the better.
Here’s something interesting - I posted the thumbnail for this video on Instagram as a I usually do - most posts on my coaching/1st element account get 15-20 likes - this one had the logos of all the major social networks and the word ‘doomscrolling’ on it - it has one like - and that was from Bex because I told her about it and she went to look for it. Even the algorithm is choking anything that steers people away from staying in platform….

Eventually most of us will appreciate the time we have over everything else. I'm just turned 60 and (naturally, I think) it's never been in sharper focus. Whick is nice as hopefully it means good times ahead. Thanks for the effort you've made making these vids.

There’s a calmness in that, isn’t there? I certainly feel so - like life isn’t as complex as I thought is possibly was?

Very useful way of thinking about social media hours - to flip it in terms of minimum wage! Mostly because, it is so easy, like you say, to not value ones own time. The social media companies know this, which is why they are so successful! I 'think' i'm getting better at this :D

I ‘think’ I am too - take a read of my reply to Jenny in the comments here through regarding my Instagram post though - it’s very interesting - anything that’s ‘anti’ social media gets choked though - this video included - it’s had far fewer views and engagement that similarly made videos…

TH-cam is my addiction. Though I’m slowly weaning myself off it and trying to be more present. But then those nearest and dearest are also glued to Fortnite/TH-cam/TikTok so cutting back for me doesn’t give me time with my family, just more time for me to fill with something else (buying stuff on eBay). I’m seriously thinking of going back to an old school Nokia.

I know a few people that have done that - the Nokia thing - defo an option! Be the change you want to see - if you’re ‘there’ in between others screen times then maybe it’ll spread a bit - it has in our house for sure - but still - at the end of the day, you only have control over your actions and reactions and nothing else - so don’t go into it expecting them to do anything - just do it for yourself as you say - like buying stuff on eBay…! Although that’s probably just replacing like with like..? Good on you for wanting to do something positive and within your control mate.

It's Instagram for me, I'll be honest...

A thought provoking way to look at things, I certainly hate social media but, like so many others still use it. I use Instagram a lot my plan is to wean myself off it, reducing the accounts i follow and eliminating # tags
The thing I took from a social media documentary was that if the product is free then you're the product.

Oh yes - that’s it isn’t it - I had heard this before alongside the reminder that Facebook and Google are advertising companies first and foremost… good for you Ian - forever the stoic - and thanks for steering me toward looking at this philosophy in more detail!
