    Brilliant explanation of explosives! I'm a Sapper (Retd) so an ex combat engineer and demolition/explosives were our thing. We used to use an obnoxious nasty called PE 808, which penetrated your skin and gave you the hangover from hell! Eventually, we got PE4, (CE4 to you Americans) which was much nicer. But great to learn about all the older stuff miners used, have to say, the idea of nitroglycerine scares me! Great series Gly!

    • @Damian.wagner
      @Damian.wagner ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your PE 808 is nitroglycerin the nitro is what seats in your skin and gives you that really bad headache from hell.. if you are a combat engineer and you like this kind of stuff blowing stuff up there is a TH-cam series called the blow down.. it's basically a backstage pass to the best blasters in the world.. out of Phoenix Maryland. Controlled demolition ink. There's a scene where they're packing like 3,500 lb of nitroglycerin base explosives into an old bridge support I believe in the Hudson River and they were 20 years away from an active highway..

      Yes Grimsmith1, explosives do absorb through the skin and the effects can be bad to worse in that they can effect heart rhythm.

    And the small wooden crates with the cable handles made great flower boxes, too! Dad had to "get rid" of some old dynamite from our mines (he's also a Navy munitions expert) so it was an event for friends and family, and in the end we created 2 new watering holes for our animals on the ranch. Loving these "info shorts"! thank you!

    Hi, The modern tube you are talking about that transfers the shockwave from first cap to the various charges is called shock tube. It contains a light dusting of HMX & Aluminium powder & is way more energetic than tnt. The detonation speed the tube transferres is something like 2km per second 1.25 miles per sec from memery. Anfo needs about 3-4 km per sec so needs primary charge. The gas pressure in the bore hole can be momentarily 1.5 million psi.
    Cheers Daniel.

    My dad during ww2 had to dispose of a whole lot of explosives. They were stationed on LI sound so he decided the place it under a huge bolder at low tide and when he set it off, it completely flipped the huge bolder. That bolder is still there and perfect to dive off of.

    Just a fun fact: Solid Rocket motors generally have an empty cylindrical hole in the middle of the cast propellant(this is where fire goes). The propellant itself is cast, a bit like you would with acrylic or concrete.

    Thanks Gly for a little mining history and explanation of the evolution of mining explosives. I was a combat engineer in the US Army and we did things a little differently but explosives were a frequent tool we used. C-4 (Composition 4) was our go-to stuff and it was easy to work with, fairly safe (as explosives go) and did a good job of doing what we needed. Keep giving us occasional history lessons, always like to learn things.

    There was a mine collapse a few years ago in southern AZ. My sister said the people who saw the dust rise said they were sure there was a secondary explosion as the dust resembled more of a mushroom cloud. Some folks thought that when the mine collapsed that it may have set off some old dynamite causing the collapse to be worse. I wasn't able to confirm that but the possibility seems there after you explained the stuff they used in the old days. I was actually surprised to see how many people have died here in AZ exploring old mines. When I watch your videos I find myself searching the floor looking for these little hidden dangers. Cant wait to see this next video. From your excitement I can tell we are in for a real treat. Thanks

    @bobjones8372 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi, me again, i can't stand factcheckers so i really hate being one, but couldn't resist😂 The safety in the safety fuse came more from being wrapped in a way that caused the flame front to be on the outside and visible when an older firework type fuse could be burning on the inside while your still trying to light the end😳. The vent on the Powderhouse was also there to get rid of fumes that gave you a massive headache from the dilation of blood vessels in the brain, nitro heart medication is the exact same stuff. Its the nitro that crystallizes from it's liquid oily for and gets WAY more sensitive, the Mercury fulminate(silver now) is already crystallized. The Mercury corroded gun barrels because it's what's in a cartridge primer. And lastly, the black powder used in paper firework fuse varies widely. Have fun.

    You have some of the explosives development out of order. Black powder, nitro, making of dynamite was in the 1860s. You skipped the electric caps. The % was the amount of nitro in the stick or charge. The Hoosack Tunnel was started with black powder and finished with nitroglycerin. It was discovered that if nitro is frozen, it won't go off and is easy and much safer to transport.

    Gly, I've long been meaning to ask. in most all movies and TV dramas I've seen with dynamite, the sticks are always wrapped in red paper. Yet all of the old sticks I've seen you come across in your explorations the sticks are wrapped in grey or tan paper. Does the color of a dynamite stick indicate a time period?

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  ปีที่แล้ว

      “Gly”: No. As you said, red was used for TV and movies. I’ve never in my life found a stick of dynamite wrapped in red paper.

    • @Porty1119
      @Porty1119 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AbandonedandForgottenPlacesI'm blanking on the color of the dynamite we use, however, we use a different dynamite product called Xactex (also known as Trim-Shot) that is wrapped in red-orange paper. It's about 3/4" in diameter and is useful for removing small knobs/protrusions and taking samples. The holes can be drilled with a battery hammer drill, which saves us the effort of needing to string utilities for a jackleg.
      Other dynamite I've used has had yellow wrapping.
      The term you were looking for at the end is Nonel. We use it in conjunction with detcord, and initiate the detcord with an old-school crimped cap and safety fuse.

    You never fail to amaze me, Gly. QUESTION, and maybe you can't answer it, but listening to your dissertation just now, it brought back a - somewhat unpleasant(???) memory........... In the central highlands of Vietnam, when you heard that ominous "Whistling sound," you sought cover!!! It was an incoming Soviet 122mm rocket. First, the old saying is true, you'll never hear the one that gets you. OK, if it's a ways away you'll hear the whistle, followed immediately by the BOOM! If it's close, you'll hear the whistle, an instant of dead silence, and then the BOOM! IF it was waaay too close - like right outside the bunker - you heard the whistle, followed by the instant of silence, followed by a 'snap' (kind of like splintering a piece of dry wood), and then the BANG! Was that 'snap', the igniter in the head of the rocket, setting off the explosion of the rocket? I've always wondered about that.... Carl 366th ASD, DakTo, 1968-69

    Dynamite the great historical irony, Nobel same as the peace prize wanted to make explosives safe to handle anf found mixing nitroglyierin with clay made it much safer to handle. Later itterations added waxes and other componds to make it less likely to explode in a fire. Id suspect by the 50s they were using TNT and other seconday high explosives that won't explode except with a blasting cap, the later versions swaped mercury fulmanate with lead azide which doesn't corrode the copper jacket as much forming very unstable copper fulmate, the fulmates are easy to make accidently during metalographic etching but as you already said they aren't necessarily stable or safe to make or handle and something you try to avoid at all costs.

    Gly, Im 50 years old, WAY outta shape, too fat, and just generally eat like crap. I'm trying to make some changes to all of that but its slow-going. I too get pretty damn winded when climbing hills or working hard, but I've had several tests recently including stress tests and a heart flow scan and everything checks out fine. My blood pressure is med controlled. Out of breath doesn't always mean heart problems... it could just mean you're older, overweight, and out of shape. BUT, old/fat/out of shape is a bad combo for future heart problems, sooo.... keep a sharp eye my friend. I'll do the same. Maybe we should have a competition-- who can lose the most weight over the next year? If you win, I'll make a considerable donation to your channel. If I win, you promise to take me along on a future episode of A&FP. 😃

      “Gly”: Well, last Saturdays episode was filmed roughly four weeks ago and since then I’ve lost 10 pounds just by cutting carbs and cutting out sugar from my diet. I can’t promise you a mine exploration but I do encourage you to stay with your weight loss because you’ll feel so much better after knocking off some of those pounds.

    Tom from the Explosions & Fire channel has a video about fulminating metals and how to make them while giving you a history lesson. I believe most people aren't going to make gold, silver or platinum explosives... He tries to make fulminating mercury (he explains the difference between fulminating mercury and mercury fulminate) and fails.

    Gly shock tube contains the same thing as detcore, p.e.t.n. and it burns at a rate of about 30000 feet per second.. gly Mercury fulminate.. fun stuff. You chukled when you said it was easy to make.. here's one you for nitric acid and benzene.. 50/50 mix.. fun stuff.. I have like 30 seconds left of the video but gly hasn't really got to the point of the percentage of what it means.. and the old days they took pulp find round sawdust with nitroglycerin with it to make it stable. Because nitroglycerin and it's purified form above 77°tends to explode at a temperature of 65 degrees it starts to boil.. the first time you see that and you're growing here making some in your home kitchen yeah that's scary.. nowadays Dupont makes all of military and mining explosives.. it's made with bentonite clay or dead Earth,,, or unscented kitty litter.. and the percentage applies to how concentrated the nitroglycerin is mixed with the bentonite clay.. see when they mix it the clay is dry and extremely absorbent.. and after it's mixed it comes out almost like a pudy or wet mud.. in the old days they wrapped it in wax paper.. now they pack it into a sealed plastic tube crimped on each hand. Pretty much the same way that sausage is made.. say that a 1in by 10 inch long stick contains 8 oz of bentonite and then they might add 3 oz of nitroglycerin.. well that would be 30% the amount of clay in each stick is the same.. whether they add 3 oz or 6 oz which would be 60% is the number that changes.. if you actually are able to obtain a blasting license from the ATF.. a case of dynamite is sold with 48 sticks in a case.. and provided you have the proper licensing a case cost about $230.. I'm at comes to mining explosives it's fairly cheap. Compared to if you wanted to buy a case of c-4 plastic explosive.. which I believe is 12 3x3by 18 in Long bricks.. that will cost about $3,200.. if you have the proper licensing and a federal firearms license with your tax stamp.. an m67 grenade cost $45 each.. which is one of the coolest grenades ever because it contains RDX also known by the military is composition - B.... A frag grenade will make some holes in the walls and make your ears ring for little while.. and I'm 67 will displace your house all over the neighborhood.. PS final words of wisdom.. make sure you have the proper licensing and you do things the legal way before messing around with any of this.. do not be like me and do things without a license.. even if I wanted to do things the right because I didn't do things the right way the first time it is illegal for me to even obtained or try to fill out the proper weight paperwork to do things the right way in this country.. you will get screwed over you will go to jail they will tell you that not knowing the law is not an excuse.. and they will make you out to look like the biggest terrorist on the face of the planet and destroy your life.. when it comes to this country they do not mess around they do not care about your personal life and his my comes to explosives there is no legit reason that you would ever have to ignore the proper licensing and permissions you need to have in order to use it.. and it's a great tool.. but make sure you have your paperwork in order before messing around with any of the stuff.. the government will ruin your life they won't care that you just had a hobby.. and everybody including your own family will think of you is a criminal and a terrorist for the rest of your life..

    One more, don't just blame the winter bad habits for getting so winded last week, kept thinkinkg about it, go to your doc and get your numbers checked, you're too far out in nowhere too often not to, blood pressure doses that are working fine sitting around, can work TOO well when you're exercising and eating well. Take care and have fun.
