      When I see the Altuve debate over the internet I've noticed that a lot of people come up with the "well, why didnt he just exposed his team or whatever?" argument, and well, if you know how the teams are, its a pretty simple reason: blackballing. It's no secret that everyone wants to cheat, just so in a way they dont get caught or if they do, they aren't punished heavily by it. So going against your team publicly or some crazy stuff like that is just a death sentence for your career as a player

      Regarding the home-road dichotomy. You are starting from an early assumption - that the Astros must not have cheated on the road, because there were no trash can bangs detected in road games. The MLB Report, which everyone expected would reveal that the Astros cheated only at home, did not address the issue. The only factual finding of relevance was that the Astros cheated during the regular season and "throughout the Postseason" in 2017. In August of 2017, Kevin Goldstein, Astros Executive sent an email to their scouts to request ways in which they could steal signs from the crowd, rather than from a camera feed, which was an effort to refine their cheating away from Minute Maid (which they would not have needed such assistance because they were using the home camera).
      “One thing in specific we are looking for is picking up signs coming out of the dugout,” Goldstein wrote in the message. “What we are looking for is how much we can see, how we would log things, if we need cameras/binoculars, etc. So go to game, see what you can (or can’t) do and report back your findings.”
      If you saw Game 7 at Dodger Stadium, it was pretty clear that he was successful. Bregman stole THIRD for the only time in his life, and Gurriel, who averages the fewest pitches per plate appearance in the entire MLB over his career, has a THIRTEEN pitch at bat, casually sitting back on all off speed stuff and fouling it off. And, of course it was later confirmed by Evan Gattis that the Astros knew what Darvish was throwing on each pitch.
      Of course they cheated on the road, and you'd better believe that after cheating all year, against teams like the White Sox that lost nearly 100 games, there were not going to stop cheating in Game 7 of the World Series.

      No team in history has cheated like the 2017 Astros. The increase in OPS by the Houston Astros from 2016 to 2017: 1B Gurriel .677 -> .817; 2B Altuve .928 -> .957; SS Correa .811 -> .941; 3B Bregman .791 -> .827; LF Gonzalez .694 -> .907; CF Springer .815 -> .889; RF Reddick .749 -> .847; C McCann .748 -> .759. Utility Marisnick .588 - .815 That's an entire lineup with improved OPS from 2016 to 2017.
      Five of the nine lineup players set CAREER highs that they never topped. It's insane. Nothing like that has ever happened in MLB history.
      By contrast, of the regular players on the 2018 Red Sox team, only three improved their OPS over the prior year - Bogaerts, Benintendi and Betts - and only Betts had the best year of his career. Six of the nine regular players actually decreased. The 2001 Seattle Mariners, with the best record in MLB history, also only had ONE player (Bret Boone) who had a career OPS season.

      Yes, it made the 2022 World Series victory something to be proud of because it was won honestly without cheating. In fact, if you look at the lineup, only two players remain from that cheating team of 2017 - Bregman and Altuve. And, Correa said that Altuve was disgusted by the cheating and actually got mad when his teammates tried to get him to cheat as well. Altuve was apparently raised to be honest and to play fair, and he did not want success if it was achieved only by cheating. So, yes, the cheating 2017 team is a disgrace, a brown, crusty , smelly skidmark on the underwear of Major League Baseball, but the fact that they cheated makes the 2022 Astros, who won without cheating, even better.

    The same research that this video cited also concluded that the sign stealing system hurt more than it helped due to its inaccuracy. On top of that, how could Gonzalez have used the sign stealing system in the World Series at Dodgers stadium to hit his home run? Gonzalez's batting splits were much better on the road than at home in 2017. All this evidence points to something not so unusual for many baseball players: a career year.

    • @drbryant23
      @drbryant23 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @jtcolston81
    @jtcolston81 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Let it go, let it go, let it go! Only problem with this theory is look at his home/away stats. He was a better hitter on the road by quite big margin. Yes he hit more homeruns at home but his batting average on the road was nearly 40 points higher. His Ops on the road was higher. He struck out more at home and walked way more that struck out on the road. From all accounts the cheating could only happen at home and yet he was better on the road. Interestingly the Astros as a whole were way better on the road in 17. They won because they were good not because of any cheating scandal. Yanks cry about it but they score 3 runs in 4 games in Houston that’s why they lost.

    • @garrettscroggs
      @garrettscroggs ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition to this, an interesting finding was made comparing Marwin's numbers toward the beginning of the season before he received as many trash can bangs to after.
      "According to this dataset, Gonzalez had exactly six pitches with the bangs prior to June 11th. By looking at his stats before-and-after this date, we can get a better idea of how it impacted his hitting. If his “hot season” was already underway prior to June 11th, then the actual impact of the cheating become murky. If he started colder but got hot after that point, then it clearly helped him.
      From March 1st, 2017 through June 10th, 2017 Marwin Gonzalez hit .322/.412/.630 with 12 dingers. He struck out 18% of the time, and walked 11.8% of the time. We can essentially call these the “pre-banging stats.” From June 11th through September 24th we get the “post-banging stats.” Gonzalez hit .283/.343/.466 with his other 12 homers. His strikeout rate was 21% and his walk rate was 7.5%. These were not the stats I was expecting."
      He received the most opportunities to cheat, but the cheating doesn't necessarily equate to the sole reason he had a fluke season.

We have seen multiple guys come out and say they know other teams were doing things, the league knows too, the facts are the league knew about the Astros in 2018 and chose to do nothing. I’m a lifelong Braves fan. Aside from one season where they made the WS with Clemens and Pettite (both cheaters, what a disgrace of an organization the Houston Astros have been for decades) the Braves beat on the Astros like a drum and when baseball gave them mercy, moved them to the AL and we finally saw them again we beat them in the World Series without Acuna (while Houston missed Verlander).
    Anyways the point I’m making is that I’m pretty unbiased here.
    It is funny though how you completely failed to mention Martin Gonzalez’s first season in Minnesota after he left Houston because the Twins do what the Twins do and overpaid a player for no reason.
    Gonzalez had 15 HRs 55 RBIs in only 115 games while slashing .264/.322/.414/.736. His 94 OPS+ (100 is league average) is pretty abysmal but during the career year you mentioned.
    Most players usually have one year that sticks out. Is it a coincidence that Gonzalez’s best campaign, by far, came during the cheating scandal? No. Is it a coincidence that he fell off so badly after Houston? Also no.
    But you can’t make a video destroying him for cheating without mentioning that 2019 where he was obviously having a really good season.

    Never understood why Houston got so much prolonged hate. Many and I repeat many MLB players have come out and said that cheating in different forms (sign stealing, illegal substances for pitchers, etc) occurred with almost every if not every MLB team. Maybe Houston’s sign stealing was more elaborate than others and maybe it wasn’t but other teams including the Red Sox were stealing signs. It’s hypocritical to continue to slam the Astros yet turn a blind eye to other cheating around the league. I get it, if your team hasn’t been proven to cheat you have to and want to assume they didn’t but the fact that MLB players admitted that cheating is wide spread the right thing to do is move on from focusing on one team for something that happened 5 years ago.

      No team in history has cheated like the 2017 Astros. The increase in OPS by the Houston Astros from 2016 to 2017: 1B Gurriel .677 -> .817; 2B Altuve .928 -> .957; SS Correa .811 -> .941; 3B Bregman .791 -> .827; LF Gonzalez .694 -> .907; CF Springer .815 -> .889; RF Reddick .749 -> .847; C McCann .748 -> .759. Utility Marisnick .588 - .815 That's an entire lineup with improved OPS from 2016 to 2017.

All un-fact claims when you just pick and choose home runs or rallies in any game of 2017 is ridiculous! You talk about Marwin only because the rest of the guys are all still All-Stars! Why not NY and the OG's of cheating and steroids and paying fines for sign stealing in the same year???? Marwin was still one of the most solid utility players in the game for years. The guy now is at the tail end of his career. Let it go!! They've ONLY been to 3 more championship since then! Keep booing them.....

    I call this guy a casual baseball fan. Only a casual still- goes on about this nonsense. Fact is, if you knew the game, you would know analytics assures most darn good players actually already know what pitch is comin. Out of what your typical four pitches most pitchers have in their arsenal, and in certain counts they know most of the time where that pitcher is in that count. Juan soto comes to mind because hes brilliant at this stuff. Like picking up on an opposing teams signs, that in itself is a game in a game. Watching juan work is truly something to enjoy. Care to know why they still cant hit it? Welp, sometimes its just out right speed but your biggest reason? Location. If you dont know where that balls gonna break, say on a curve, or dive, slider or straight land, all of the above- good luck hitting it. You cant relay that info. I dont care if you're using a watch, a trash can, lights in a scoreboard, booger picking, shifting your stance at second base, ect. 😂 It has laughable- LAUGHABLE- advantages yet here we are students of the game laughing at nincompoops like this guy still posting this drama, still pimpin this story about a team his team cant beat- thats the story. And all you whiners whose teams also cant beat em bought right into it- 😂😂👌 talk about CRINGE- simply put.. I got an idea... Beat em- good luck with that. Otherwise.. Stop whining and throwin shade at players you have like NO CLUE- their involvement.. Its played out and frankly makes all of ya look like not only novices of the game- BUTTHURTS- but lil girls who cant get over a grudge so ya gotta mean girl your way through life.. 😁

    One problem with your theory is, as you said in this video, that the Astros won Game 2 of the 2017 WS, on the road IN DODGER STADIUM. (FYI, they also won Game 7 of the 2017 WS, on the road IN DODGER STADIUM.)
    Since the sign stealing was accomplished by using a camera in the outfield to send video to a monitor in the dugout, then sending info to the batter via trashcan banging -- how did the Astros take over a camera in the Dodger Stadium outfield. then transmit its video to the monitor in the Astros' (ie, visitor's) dugout on the road??? No one can explain that, can you???
    Marwin had a freakish great year in 2017, by the numbers you detail. It could be that simple to explain, esp when he had great numbers during road games, where the sign stealing system was impossible to implement. Other players have had a great year, then fail to replicate it in subsequent years.
    BTW, the trashcan banging was/is NOT illegal -- the illegal part was using electronic means to steal signs, such a video camera, monitors, and/or the Apple watches (used by NY Yankees, Red Sox, & Dodgers).
