  • In the span of less than 1 year, Edie Sedgwick inspired Andy Warhol to make almost 20 films. She would remain one of the most recognizable Warhol Superstars, decades later.

why do i feel andy was jealous of these women and also of straight men who get to discard women? he certainly treated women like they were disposable.

You know. I’ve noticed many gay men have this behavior. I’ve even caught it in myself, and of course corrected. It’s not on purpose however. I’m sure it’s some deeper comment on society as a whole but there you have it.

No he didn't. He was no saint, but anyone who's read the slightest thing about Edie knows she was a wildly unstable person rocketing on drvgs the brief time they were collaborating. Warhol made her famous, and SHE was the one who left because she thought Bob Dylan would boost that fame. Andy didn't discard her, it was the crazy 60s and Edie went her own way. Jean Stein's biography of Edie was a great read but really poisonously slanted in creating her myth, h0m0ph0b1cally casting Andy as the villain. He wasn't.

Worhol was a narcissist and only would use people, that can make himself shine and then, throw them away. He is partly to blame for her downfall, but she was always self destructive, due to her unhappy childhood. Her parents were unbalanced, her father another narcissist creep. Sad very sad. Three Sedgwick siblings died young, by their own destruction.

He seem only interested in people, from the perspective of how interesting they were, he didn’t really seem to have any empathy for his “Superstar’s “ when they needed help

Andy Warhol was definitely a contributing factor. He knew she was broken & he used that to get what he wanted from her. He would also have known susceptible she'd be to destruction with drug use & what his rejection would to do her, & he just didn't care.
So no, not "all his fault", but intentionally damaging a vulnerable, damaged person for your own selfish desires/satisfaction incurs some culpability.
Her father broke her & Warhol stomped on the pieces. She didn't have much hope (psychologically) of having a stable life before Warhol, but I believe she would've made it much longer w/o him.
Sadly people do this to each other all the time & those who do it sleep fine. At least mental health is better now, all that shock therapy didn't help her either.

I would put most of the blame for Edie's tragic life on her father, considering that Edie's two older brothers killed themselves prior to Edie's demise.

Not all. The family built a poor foundation. Warhol and others saw this and exploited it. She was in her early twenties and still imo very much a child, considering how sheltered she had been out on that large ranch before moving to the east coast. It seems like she was let loose because of her legal age, but others saw that she had not really been prepared for the world. Her beauty gave her positive attention, but borh her money and beauty brought her a lot vultures who used her and exploited her vulnerabilities and inexperience. In today's world, she wouldn't have had to beg for a career in modeling or even in independent films.

Never was a woman without a man to blame. Women put themselves into the hands of men because it is a shortcut up the ladder, and if anything goes wrong, it's never her fault. She used him for his fame just as much as he used her. That would be obvious to everyone if he had a vagina.

In Factory Girl it was written into the script that Dylan loved her and wanted her to leave the Warhol life and she couldn't tear herself away, but now having learned he was secretly married , it adds to her tragic story. No I do not feel Warhol was responsible for her death, But he was a cruel person, he hated himself on a inner child level but he was a supreme narcissistic, he knew how to find the weakness in those he preyed on .. I'm enjoying your return, and if I had any feedback it might be that I'd be interested in more videos on those who made or appeared in lesser known cult and B-C-D movie or cheapie films of this era, those tied to New York anyway. It was such a fascinating period. Men and women who by day would toil in acclaimed drama and acting schools, waiting for their big break, then by night perform in the cheapest junkers in order to keep food on the table. That whole era has so much to mine. You do a great job summarizing - I've always found the Warhol crowd simultaneously overexposed and covered in a shallow way, so these are good little info nuggets. As for Edie, I think you can blame narcissists like Dylan and Warhol, but, sad to say, she was also likely heading towards her fate no matter what. So many young men and women succumb to loneliness, insecurity, and finally, drugs - they just aren't part of the Warhol mystique, so their stories are never told. Still, she's left a true legacy.

@@RetroRoomYT There's the Rialto Report (although that is an adult film blog/podcast, just to warn, definitely NSFW). The story they had on Dolly Sharp/Helen Wood reminded me of something I could have seen your channel doing, with the twists and turns of her life. Others of that period like Jamie Gillis, Eric Edwards, Tina Russell, Linda Lovelace, Kathie Hilton, etc. and probably a lot more I don't know about. Very dramatic. Beyond that, if you'd rather not do videos on that type of subject, now that I think of it, the early years of the SNL cast are pretty fascinating. Some of that has been covered to death, but other stories, like Yvonne Hudson (the first black female cast member of SNL, an extra for several years before and after that point, supposedly an NBC employee before being cast as she was already there and easy to hire, disappeared after about 1983 or 1984), would also be fascinating. Oh, and Andy Warhol also appeared on SNL several times in 1981 for some weird films and some very unique writers of that period (like Nelson Lyon and Terry Southern) were also briefly involved, which would be interesting material, along with Michael O'Donoghue's tumultuous involvement for half the season. Dennis Perrin wrote about some of that.

Edie was messed up long before Warhol. Her drug abuse started at a young age. She was disconnected from the Warhol world for several years before her overdose so any implication that Warhol was to blame is ridiculous.

What a waste. In other news, I met Andy Warhol at a really chic party.

Andy Warhol was responsible for numerous nightmares....I admired his artistic instinct but he was a manipulator and sadist at heart. NOT LIKE HIS MORE TALENTED COLLEAGUE JOHN WATERS.

You did a damn fine job messing your daughter up, Minty.

Minty was Edie's brother who committed suicide. Dad was Frances, aka "Fuzzy"
