Abandoned - Epcot's Wonders of Life

  • In-between what was Horizons and the Universe of Energy, sat the Wonders of Life pavilion. A large golden dome housing all kinds of educational exhibits and rides showcasing the importance of staying healthy. It was a $200,000,000 attraction which only really lasted for around 13 years. Guests who visited towards the end, witnessed the sad downfall of a classic Epcot pavilion until it was left partially abandoned with it's attractions now infamously left to decay. This is the incredible and sad story of Walt Disney World's, Wonders of Life.

@@LKOnyx Yeah there's a reason why museums all tend to be state funded in some way unless they're roadside attractions. Making anything about science means having to hire well payed experts as well as meaning that you have to make regular updates because science is never a static thing. And there is not much room for branding which makes it really unattractive to corporations, much better in their view to have some sort of branded IP because that requires less updates (since you control it) and you have already made the marketing for the ride in the IP itself and the ride ends up also serving as marketing.

Fun fact: I used to work at Epcot in a position called "Epcot East". Basically I did roving as security for the entire left side, all the way from the entrance to the Mexico pavilion. One of my favorite things to do was explore the Wonders of Life building.
Mind you, I had no idea of what used to be there; because the building was mostly used for storage at this time. So anyways, I came across this weird little area with tile floors, and walls. And what I knew used to be a que line. But it was very run down and the posters that were on the wall were faded, cracked, and dilapidated. When I first went in I thought I had stumbled on some sort of genetic testing center or something! 😂
But nope! It was the old Journey into the Human body/Body wars ride. Funny enough, they had the old TVs still on the walls, and two of them were even still on!! It was a very interesting experience.
Turns out, they decided to shut down that ride. Took the ride cars out of it, gave em an update, and Voila! They made the Star Wars ride in Hollywood Studios. The que line is/was identical. The cars are identical. Even the set up is identical.
So just remember when you ride the old Star Wars ride in Hollywood Studios, that you're quite literally in a piece of history from another park.
Another fun story; I ran into another Cast member in there one time, and he had mentioned something about a freaky animatronic who was still in the building. So of course I had to go find that!
Went through some twists and turns and pretty much immediately found it. Suffice it to say, it was truly creepy. I wish I'd of taken a picture because it was in a dark room. With a spotlight on the animatronic; and he sat up in his little seat on the robo-arm thing. When I got closer to it I noticed that the synthetic hand-skin had rotted away, so his metal skeleton was exposed. Basically had robo-hands but the rest was how he appeared when he was in service.
That same year somebody stole his jacket I heard!
This was all 2016-2018, so it was actually really recent. Right before, and during the construction of the Guardians ride!!

When I got there and, for the first time ever the garden wasn’t roped off, I RAN inside there and looked at every little remaining detail. It was incredible. I got a picture under the arches for Body Wars (still beautiful) and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. Funny story. My parents took me here when I was in elementary school (early 2000’s). We’ve been to Disney before, but we never really visited this place too much. One day they decided to kill some time while we waited for our fast pass time for Test Track, and they took me in to ‘The Making of Me’. We had been to Body Wars before, but never this show. So, they innocently figured it was something new. But, right before we went in, I’ll never forget my mom asking my dad verbatim, “Do you think they show....?” My dad responded adamantly, “I doubt it...”
Long story short, they showed exactly how a baby was made and I was traumatized by some of the specific language they used to describe the actions. Not to mention the crazy scenes. Knowing my parents did this ruined my whole day. My parents felt so bad.
Anyway, that’s how I learned about the birds and the bees. I’m now 28 and I’ll never forget that day.

I still think it is kinda awesome how my family were one of the last people in the Wonders of Life area. We use to go to Disney World for Thanksgiving week and the week after that. In 2006 we heard that the Wonders of Life was going to open for the Christmas season. We never got a chance to go into it before (as the last time we went was in 1989) so it was crazy how 90s and quiet it was. They had no advertisement for it and we only found out about it from the web. It felt so weird being in the area. Of course my dad took so many pictures since we knew it might be the last time we would be in there.

I loved going to Epcot as a kid in the late '80s and early '90s. Cranium Command was always a favorite. I only went on Body Wars once, because my mom was one of the people who was made nauseous by it. Horizons was great too; it had this cool hidden lounge upstairs that we always got to hang out in because my dad's employer was affiliated with the pavilion's sponsor (GE, I think). Taking a break in the A/C up there on a hot Florida summer's day was a treat.
In the late '90s I actually lived in Orlando for a time and had an annual pass to WDW so I could just waltz over to Epcot for dinner or whatever (in those days you could actually just walk into many restaurants on Disney property without having made a reservation a year before). Test Track had just opened and I would go over and ride it all the time. Back then it was still based around a new vehicle testing theme, and when you got out on the high speed loop the V8 sound effects were like sweet music. Gas was 98 cents a gallon, I had a new Pontiac Trans Am and everything was all right in the world; at least, it felt like it was when you were at Disney World.
Thanks for stirring my memories of it all! I am now officially old.

I first went to WDW as a kid in 1992. Loved it. I didn't get back until 2012 and by that stage Epcot, the park that made the strongest impression on me, was in a seriously sorry state compared to what I remembered. World showcase wasn't too bad, but Future world had been ravaged by budget cuts, closures, dumbing down and weird additions that were completely thematically inconsistent with the parks original mission. Even the latest plans (probably mostly shelved now) didn't get back to what made the original idea so unique.

I like Epcot because it’s the adult park. But this will ruin it. Guardians coaster looks cool though

Sad seeing a lot of Disney rides/attractions closing. I will never forget going to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot with my Grandpa back in the 80's. He brought his RV up to Ohio and took us all back down to Florida where he lived. So Disney world will always be special to me. I'm wondering how long the parks will remain open. It's just a matter of time before people stop going. Prices are just getting way out of hand.

It amazing how many Disney theme park ideas were either built and then abondanded. Or semi-built and then left in limbo for years on end. Before either being finished or abandoned. Thanks for bringing life to all these places, Jake! 😄

Thanks for the video, Abandoned. Just crazy that it takes so much to keep these attractions going.

I always liked watching cranium command and riding body wars at the wonders of life pavilion. My favorite part about the pavilion was color crazy where you would see words in different colors and guess what color the word was.

My favorite thing about Buzzy going missing is that I was traveling for Christmas, had just landed and gotten to my hotel, and saw this on Twitter. For the last 2 years, I've wondered if this was something my jet-lagged brain made up until I google it

I love the colors and tackiness of the 80s and 90s. The aesthetic can't be beat

I have so many fond memories of the Wonders of Life. Mostly because it was my first trip in 1996 and I was only 7. Thank you for these videos, always puts a smile on my face.

I worked for Met back when they sponsored the pavilion. Within the pavilion was a small conference center. Once a year my division held our annual meeting there with staff coming from NY, GA and iL. Great winter get away! We’d tack on a few days before or after and get free passes to any park. I’m sure other divisions did the same.
