This video has a lot of great information. For me it really helped to adjust the playback speed to 1.5, otherwise it just seems too drawn out. If you feel like the speech is too slow try the adjustment for yourself rather than miss out on some great instruction.
Great advice. When at the kitchen and we get an inbound lob, I go back with my partner while strikes the ball. I'm also able to communicate with easily him/her like: in, out, let it bounce. This is helpful with an inexperienced player.
Some people will NOT change. This information is a big help to players whose rec partners rarely get to the NVZ out of fear. I'm wondering if wearing protective eye wear would assuage their worries.
Tony, I saw myself in your example of the blame game where I gave my opponent an easier than desired shot and they handcuffed or otherwise dominated my partner because of it. I have been binge listening to your Pickleball therapy podcast and it has helped me immensely with these “between the ears” weaknesses in my game.
@@BestPickleballCoachIt baffles me because it just doesn't make any sense, it's like when someone hits the ball in baseball and then runs to 3rd base instead of 1st base. There seems to be a mental disconnect between what a player knows what they should be doing and what they actually do. I play with some people who also creep 2-3 feet into the transition zone on the serving side before the 3rd shot drop, and are then forced into an awkward shot on a deep return. They acknowledge they shouldn't be doing it but they still do it anyway. I just don't get it.
@@BestPickleballCoach And I applaud your efforts as your instructional videos are excellent. I just wish more of the people I play with would watch them!
The lob play seems opposite of some other training Ive seen, I thought player getting lobbed is suppose to open up and chase / overhand shot if possible. The strategy suggested in this video seems like it would be confusing, especially in open play setting.
This is an area where there are differing philosophies. Ours is that the player crossing behind has a better chance of success. That said, playing in open / rec play makes this a challenge (like most strategies that require coordination :)).
I really like the idea of one's partner (running back cross-court) to chase down the deep lob when both are at the kitchen. I can see where this is safer for the older crowd so they don't trip while back pedaling and hit their head. I also like this strategy because the "ball chaser" can always keep their eye on the ball from the start of the chase to the swing. The "chaser" is probably a little further or has more distance to cover but can accelerate faster due to less of an angle to turn and also saves a ton of time compared to the situation where the partner directly in front of the lob turns the wrong direction, taking the most inefficient route to the ball while losing sight of it and probably ending up in a very awkward position to take a good shot...if they even get to it. If both partners are very fast and mobile, do the advantages listed above still apply? Do the pro's cover lobs this way and if no, why not? Thanks in advance for your reply.
It's understood that your player stand-ins are helping to illustrate the ideas. No need to keep repeating that they wouldn't normally do whatever the mistake is ;)
The first mistake is very common at lower levels. A lady in our club plays back from the baseline like this all the time. Oddly enough it’ll work at lower level play sometimes but against better players it’s game over and if you’re her partner it’s unbelievably frustrating.
If I play with a random player that does this - I cover more of the net by poaching- I mean if you are going to stay back because you think you can hit groundstrokes like Roger Federer, Im going to poach

Appreciate it. Most of the time it is I am speaking too fast :).
I shared this with our whole Club. Great coaching as always, Tony.
Thank you Linda.
Absolutely spot on in all these tips. Thank you heaps..

Good stuff. Thank you
As always, what you say makes so much sense! Thanks for sharing these insights.

Eye protection is always a good idea and I do believe it would help. Appreciate the comment
Great video. So many people play doubles like a singles game. Super annoying
Definitely limits their chances for success.
“Islands of despair” - love that
That's exactly what it is. 😂

Glad it resonated Gerry. Our improved understanding is a process.
I used to slide on the lob...no more. Thanks for tip.
Love it :)
Compa great advice keep it up. Hello from North Carolina
Un abrazo Jose.
I'm amazed at how many people, who have been playing for years, are still lazy when it comes to getting to the kitchen on the return of serve.
Me too! Drives me crazy!
I’m not sure these players appreciate the dire position they are in. We will keep teaching it and hope that they are open to the improvement

Thanks Tony and CJ great Camp in Dallas
Thank you E. Good to meet you. Safe travels.
90% of the time look at the shot before the shot. spot on.
👍
Tony: Great advice, as always. Sadly, not enough players watch your videos and heed your advice.
Ty. Lets spread the word :)
For the "My partner is staying back" I just yell "Get you ass up here!" That usually works well.
:)
My question is, who is the position leader ( the forehand player on the left or the one on the right) ! Thanks
Hello Sabine. Can you expand on your question - there are a lot of variables
Great Dallas Camp. Thx guys and Gals

I think his idea is perfect for partners who play together all the time. Open play is a different story, not sure how it would work.

Hello Tim. Cover behind your partner allows the cover player to better track the ball and is an easier turn to address the ball.
Awesome video! DON'T set your partner up for failure and then blame them.
100%
Any suggestions when you play with Left handed player. I always get blamed for being a Left handed player!🙃
No. 1 advice to lefties: embrace your awesomeness. :). Any blame is their problem not yours

Pickleball is a 1-2-3 sport, you make a good shot, the opponent pops it up, and your partner puts it away

Hello Jake. This error will certainly be exploited by players with more knowledge and it results in a completely unfair fight.

Someone has understanding neighbors such they can have a pickle ball court in their backyard.😂
It was a great house!

I think it’s tough if both players are back getting a short drop in the kitchen
I would agree with that. You can split the difference. What you do not want to do is play 1 up 1 back.
Left handed players shouldn't be allowed to play right handed players😂
:).
