Bret Hart is a national hero. What they did to him was a national tragedy. All fine and dandy for everyone else in the game, but Bret had an entirely different type of loyal fan base behind him. We knew that when he was booked well, he created some of the greatest matches ever. Some great examples are against Mr. Perfect, Stone Cold, Owen Hart, and so many others. He helped workers like the Undertaker get a chance to shine for management and the fans alike, by showing that he was more than just an unstoppable giant, he was actually someone who could go the mile. Stone Cold credits his match with Bret Hart for really helping him not just make it into the next echelon but also helped him learn a lot as well. He was the leader of a great faction/tag team. I mean, there is great reason that the Montreal Screwjob is still a thing. I have heard many wrestlers mock Hart on this for him taking his role, his belt, his championship, and everything too seriously, but maybe, just maybe if a quarter of a century later and it is still one of the biggest and most talked about wrestling moments, that also launched the Attitude Era and the Mr. McMahon character into full swing, then maybe its the wrestlers who do not take it seriously enough and need to be aware of the responsibility on their shoulders in the eyes of fans. You want to be icons, then deal with the consequence of people caring

Bret Hart was the reason I fell in love with wrestling. I remember as a kid when he dropped the title to Shawn in the Iron Man match, I thought my life ruined. I was devastated.

His attitude may have been different, and obviously it may have reflected a bit in kayfabe, but that was due to McMahon. McMahon was the one that decided to break his contract with Bret when taking the company in the direction they were going. Bret Hart could've been a great talent to have around for WWE during the Monday Night Wars.

I think Nash is the bigger mark, Hall to me seems to legit not care as long as he makes money. Nash on the other hand doesn't want to lose as much as any other wrestler. It only makes sense, I don't care if it real or not real, you want to be seen by the fans as a winner because the winners make the most money.
Nah. If you listen closely, they are usually talking about making matches and angles better. Not about wins and losses, but adding cool spots or ways to keep the fans guessing. They have a lot of flaws, but being big marks for themselves? No.

Yep. Bret also grew up idolizing guys in pro wrestling and has said pro wrestling had a major impact on him as a kid. So he would try to put himself in the shoes of the kids that loved him, that's why he took it serious. It was more than just a paycheck like it was to Hall who didn't grow up as a fan. Bret wanted to be a role model and inspire all the kids that loved him cause he was once in their shoes. If that makes him a mark well so be it, I rather be a mark that wants to be a role model vs. A guy who is proud of showing up to shows drunk and fucked up.

Not a chance. Bret Hart is a legend but hes also a legend in his own mind and a tough guy in a business that's as scripted as a Broadway play. An mma fighter or even just an average high school wrestler would dump him on his head so fast its not even funny. Theres no reason the Montreal Screwjob should have even happened. He should have put over Michaels no questions asked. Imagine how long you'd last at your job if you flat our refused to meet deadlines or attend business meetings or took money to do a job and never did it. You'd be fired in 10 seconds flat. I loved watching Bret in the ring (especially in the early 90s when hulk hogan style wrestling was breathing it's last gasps of air. That wrestling was BORING AF), but he doesn't have the best of attitudes. He's still holding grudges with people over things that happened over 30 years ago. I cant even remember some of the gripes and complaints I've had with coworkers 30 days ago. It's silly, it's childish, and it's highly unprofessional. Shawn acted the same way, but the difference was shawn was the face of the company. Bret always felt like a transitional champion between Hogan and Michaels, nothing more. Time has shown that's exactly what he was. He was a great worker, but he wasn't good at promos and he got in his own way a lot.

Bret was the man! Like Cornette said: “i always thought he took things too seriously… but in hindsight, I’m so glad that he did compared to these newbies who treat wrestling like a joke!” Bret’s wrestling book is the best wrestling book undoubtedly. He lays all on the line, including himself. It’s really well paced and draws you in. Man’s an amazing story teller, in the ring and out! Pure class and dignity! And he did so much for other wrestlers. When you hear Nash say he had his greatest wwe match with Bret and then Shawn. Austin said that bret launched him into the stratosphere. The Rock, only recently was doing a movie interview with Emily Blunt and the interviewer had a Hitman shirt on. Rock stops the interview midway to tell the dude that he loves the Hitman and that Bret did a whole lot for him, at a time when most didn’t give a shit or were being racist! The kid mentions how Bret gave him his first Great match! Just an awesome dude overall who did for others as well as himself!
Bret Hitman Hart is my HERO. I wish more wrestlers today would take the business half as seriously as he did. I don't think there were too many guys who could've whooped Bret one vs one in a shoot. He's "The Best there is, the Best there was, and DAMN sure the Best there ever will be!"
On the one hand, we have Bret who takes the business super seriously, and then you have Hall and Nash, who's goal was to not have to wrestle and go home early: I'll take the too serious guy every time.
Well in Nash’s case you can understand why...his Quad’s couldn’t take it. Hall was the guy carrying that duo. His only problem was controlling his inner demons (which thanks to DDP it looks like he has).

If I was asked to be in the ring with either Bret or Hall, I would chose Bret in a heart beat! Taking things seriously is an asset I look for in a man. Say what you will against Bret but he carried WWE, then WWF, on his shoulder for most part of the earlier to mid 90's.
When you think both those great matches had very little story behind them aswel. The rumble match was weird a title match which just seemed thrown together. Imagine what they could have done with a long term story added.

Bret was a global superstar. Hall and Nash were barely known outside of North America. They should be forever thankful to Bret because they made so much money in WCW because of his arrival.
I think this whole "Bret took the business too seriously" is a big cop out for all of the Bret Hart haters. He is a guy that is a 2nd generation wrestler that had limitless talent for his in ring work. His father was a legendary "shooter" back in his day and he obviously instilled that attitude and discipline into his boys as they were growing up. So when you reach the level that Bret did in a sport labeled as "sports entertainment" during a time when the "behind the scenes" information was still kept a secret, your job as a pro wrestler was to entertain your fans by expanding the possibility to make them think or believe what was going on inside the ring was real!! IMO Bret is on the short list of wrestlers that were able to reach that level of realism. From Austin to Taker, Hennig even Nash to countless other wrestlers that say their best match they ever had was with Bret Hart. I think a lot of the tension between various wrestlers had with each other completely comes down to ego and jealousy. So when you have guys like Hall and Nash talking to Bret about asking Vince for more $$ while he is champion seems like jealousy to me. Bret has said many times that when a wrestling promotion/company you work for makes you the champion, also means you are the highest paid guy in the company and that the promoter thinks that your the best talent in the company and the best guy to carry that status as such. Hall never was "that guy" and Nash had a very short reign in WWE simply because they didnt have the same talent or drive as others did in the business. Yeah they made a ton of $$ in WCW and worked very little and I'm sure in their minds that was okay. Bret and I'm sure the majority of others had a different outlook when it comes to how they viewed and carries themselves as performers. Bret was obviously very proud of his accomplishments and with the exception of few guys, when other wrestlers are asked to name their Top 5 of all time, Bret is on that list probably 99% of the time....PERIOD.
It is kind of ironic for anyone in that group to call anybody else a mark lol. Those guys were as selfish and into their own shit as anyone else in the business. Only difference is they used numbers to their advantage where Bret wielded the same power as one single person.

I don't ever remember Bret saying it was a work or fake. I took it just as an NBA player accusing a ref of point shaving, or a boxer claiming a match was thrown.

I don’t watch wrestling anymore, but I love listening to wrestlers from the golden years (80s and 90s) talking about the good old days. For me wrestling died when WCW folded and Vince no longer had any competition. RIP wrestling.
In a previous shoot interview Scott Hall talked about Bret wouldn't ask for more money while he was the champ and they kept his and Nash's earnings potential down in the WWE. Bret would rather hold the belt instead of making more money
When you break it down though Scott’s idea that Bret should ask for more money in order for Nash and Scott could make more money is kinda dumb. 1) Shawn was making more money than both of them. 2) Bret negotiated with Vince every time his contract was up. We saw this when he almost went to WCW in 91/92 and WWF pulled the IC belt of him in case he did leave. We also saw it again when he negotiated a big pay increase before returning in 96. Essentially he was paid well. Scott even acknowledged that he missed his negotiating window when his first contract was up but made sure not to the second time. 3) Scott and Nash had no favored nations clause with WWF so there’s no guarantee that a Bret increase would lead to them getting more money.

At a time when their wasn’t guaranteed contracts? Their may have been a downside guarantee and that’s what they wanted higher as they were probably hitting that downside, but I’m not exactly sure. I remember all the 80s guys and even in the early 90s signings the only guarantee was 25 bucks for tv and if you got over you could make money if business was good off the house. As far as I know WWF didn’t change that until they signed Johnny B Badd he was the first guaranteed money in WWF. Both Hall and Nash had the opportunity to get above Bret, Nash did get the belt at the end of 94 and held it for a full year, and both Hall and Nash left cause the pay they made in 1995 was lower than in 1994 when Bret Hart was champion. They’ve also said he was the 250k champ and 400 k champ (which is it? Cause they’ve said both). They (Hall and Nash) have both been quoted as making 400k in 1994 so we know that statement was BS. 1995 was the year of the kliq and they relegated the Hitman to mid card but they didn’t turn the business around it was the worst year ever. It wasn’t until 96 when Bret was champion leading into Iron Man match that they finally sold out Madison Square Garden for the first time in years. Their marks and their mad they weren’t more over than the Hitman. Bret’s third title run was only to keep the title warm for Shawn. After the Shawn match is when Bret negotiated which was an option many say was opened Up by Hall and Nash (it just so happens that Hulk, Macho, Nash, and Hall all leaving for the big WCW paydays as well as mean gene and getting Bobby Heenan from retirement that’s what created the WWF willing to give guaranteed contracts. Hall and Nash were like the final straws and than they were faced with losing Bret. So all these guys changed how money was made, especially Ted Turner who was willing to pay any big name whatever amount they wanted.
Bret Hart is the ultimate professional. He will show up sober and give you a great match no matter who the opponent is. If you need someone to be drunk and pilled up while no showing numerous heavily promoted pay per views, nitros and house shows then scott hall is your guy.

All true....he was certainly not straight edge and wasn't averse to some moral conundrums in his civilian life. However, he was pretty straight about business. Same as a guy like....say Harley Race....he was often a maniac in his personal life....but he took the business seriously and had his own moral code on how it worked....i.e. the story about him refusing Vince's offer to no-show a championship bout and take the NWA title with him to WWE.

I remember that match between Disco & Bret way back in 99. I was madd young back then. I was always a fan of both guys, but it was a weird booking havin them 2 main event a live TV show when they had no kinda rivalry with each other. I had no issue with them working with each other, but that match could've been at the opening of the 2nd hour.
In Canada, or at least to this Canadian, Bret Hart is a dragon slayer. He felt Shawn had disrespected him after Hart told him he was happy to do the honours, and would not back down on that stance. I'm not saying he isn't flawed, but he stood-up for himself and the Klique didn't like that, because they thaught they were above everybody else.

Mark Calaway was in Hart's corner after the screwjob incident and I'll take his opinion over most of the guys in that lockerroom. He set aside his relationship with Vince to side with his friend in this instance.

Bret did take himself way way too seriously, but Scott Hall and the Kliq type guys cared nothing about it and just wanted big paydays. As a fan I would rather have Bret, but as someone with empathy for the person Bret really hurt himself a ton by doing what he did. i'll be a WWE fan forever but I really do think that WCW will go down as the most intriguing wrestling company of all time. I can't get enough of these stories.
It always seemed like Scott Hall truly understood the business more so than Bret. The Hitman treated wrestling as his discipline, his career, his livelihood, his life, etc. Scott Hall viewed wrestling as entertainment, that he was just a performer and the whole business is to earn money (for oneself and the company). Wrestlers generally have short careers and even shorter lives, thus it's imperative to earn as much as you can, as fast as you can before your time is up. Bret Hart reminds of a star athlete who stays loyal to a team and will take a "hometown discount".... how can others ever try to use Bret as a reference for salary negotiation? It's like if Michael Jordan signs for $1 million per year.... good luck for anybody else trying to get the same amount or even more. This is very bad for an industry were a little "oops" could easily derail your career. Bret did eventually get paid more... but it seems like the main issue with Nash and Hall was that they thought Hart should have aimed higher when he was red hot.

Bret was the consummate professional. Hall and Nash were big talents, but they wanted get over and make money first and foremost. Scott didn't get into too many fights with the other wrestlers in his wrestling days. He did get into a lot of bar fights from what I've heard. Also being 6'6 and a jacked up 270lbs or more in his early days probably kept guys from messing with him. He also said he was never afraid to throw down.

Bret Hart was the reason I fell in love with wrestling. I remember as a kid when he dropped the title to Shawn in the Iron Man match, I thought my life ruined. I was devastated.
When he returned he was never the same. WWF changed so much in the short time he was out shooting tv shows.

His attitude may have been different, and obviously it may have reflected a bit in kayfabe, but that was due to McMahon. McMahon was the one that decided to break his contract with Bret when taking the company in the direction they were going. Bret Hart could've been a great talent to have around for WWE during the Monday Night Wars.

I think Nash is the bigger mark, Hall to me seems to legit not care as long as he makes money. Nash on the other hand doesn't want to lose as much as any other wrestler. It only makes sense, I don't care if it real or not real, you want to be seen by the fans as a winner because the winners make the most money.

As a lifelong Bret apologist his time in WCW was a mismanaged nightmare with his brother’s death casting a huge shadow over him and his time there.
The best thing that came out of his whole time there was the tribute match with Benoit. What a classic.
Bret was also emotionally broken from the Montreal Screwjob at the 1997 Survivor Series.

So he would try to put himself in the shoes of the kids that loved him, that's why he took it serious. It was more than just a paycheck like it was to Hall who didn't grow up as a fan. Bret wanted to be a role model and inspire all the kids that loved him cause he was once in their shoes. If that makes him a mark well so be it, I rather be a mark that wants to be a role model vs. A guy who is proud of showing up to shows drunk and fucked up.

Not a chance. Bret Hart is a legend but hes also a legend in his own mind and a tough guy in a business that's as scripted as a Broadway play. An mma fighter or even just an average high school wrestler would dump him on his head so fast its not even funny. Theres no reason the Montreal Screwjob should have even happened. He should have put over Michaels no questions asked. Imagine how long you'd last at your job if you flat our refused to meet deadlines or attend business meetings or took money to do a job and never did it. You'd be fired in 10 seconds flat. I loved watching Bret in the ring (especially in the early 90s when hulk hogan style wrestling was breathing it's last gasps of air. That wrestling was BORING AF), but he doesn't have the best of attitudes. He's still holding grudges with people over things that happened over 30 years ago. I cant even remember some of the gripes and complaints I've had with coworkers 30 days ago. It's silly, it's childish, and it's highly unprofessional. Shawn acted the same way, but the difference was shawn was the face of the company. Bret always felt like a transitional champion between Hogan and Michaels, nothing more. Time has shown that's exactly what he was. He was a great worker, but he wasn't good at promos and he got in his own way a lot.

Pure class and dignity! And he did so much for other wrestlers. When you hear Nash say he had his greatest wwe match with Bret and then Shawn. Austin said that bret launched him into the stratosphere. The Rock, only recently was doing a movie interview with Emily Blunt and the interviewer had a Hitman shirt on. Rock stops the interview midway to tell the dude that he loves the Hitman and that Bret did a whole lot for him, at a time when most didn’t give a shit or were being racist! The kid mentions how Bret gave him his first Great match!

On the one hand, we have Bret who takes the business super seriously, and then you have Hall and Nash, who's goal was to not have to wrestle and go home early: I'll take the too serious guy every time.
Well in Nash’s case you can understand why...his Quad’s couldn’t take it. Hall was the guy carrying that duo. His only problem was controlling his inner demons (which thanks to DDP it looks like he has).

Bret Hart vs Razor Ramon worked those two great PPV matches in 93, I really wish WCW would have given us the chance at another run.
When you think both those great matches had very little story behind them aswel. The rumble match was weird a title match which just seemed thrown together. Imagine what they could have done with a long term story added.

Bret was a global superstar. Hall and Nash were barely known outside of North America. They should be forever thankful to Bret because they made so much money in WCW because of his arrival.
I think this whole "Bret took the business too seriously" is a big cop out for all of the Bret Hart haters. He is a guy that is a 2nd generation wrestler that had limitless talent for his in ring work. His father was a legendary "shooter" back in his day and he obviously instilled that attitude and discipline into his boys as they were growing up. So when you reach the level that Bret did in a sport labeled as "sports entertainment" during a time when the "behind the scenes" information was still kept a secret, your job as a pro wrestler was to entertain your fans by expanding the possibility to make them think or believe what was going on inside the ring was real!! IMO Bret is on the short list of wrestlers that were able to reach that level of realism. From Austin to Taker, Hennig even Nash to countless other wrestlers that say their best match they ever had was with Bret Hart. I think a lot of the tension between various wrestlers had with each other completely comes down to ego and jealousy. So when you have guys like Hall and Nash talking to Bret about asking Vince for more $$ while he is champion seems like jealousy to me. Bret has said many times that when a wrestling promotion/company you work for makes you the champion, also means you are the highest paid guy in the company and that the promoter thinks that your the best talent in the company and the best guy to carry that status as such. Hall never was "that guy" and Nash had a very short reign in WWE simply because they didnt have the same talent or drive as others did in the business. Yeah they made a ton of $$ in WCW and worked very little and I'm sure in their minds that was okay. Bret and I'm sure the majority of others had a different outlook when it comes to how they viewed and carries themselves as performers. Bret was obviously very proud of his accomplishments and with the exception of few guys, when other wrestlers are asked to name their Top 5 of all time, Bret is on that list probably 99% of the time....PERIOD.

I don’t watch wrestling anymore, but I love listening to wrestlers from the golden years (80s and 90s) talking about the good old days. For me wrestling died when WCW folded and Vince no longer had any competition. RIP wrestling.
In a previous shoot interview Scott Hall talked about Bret wouldn't ask for more money while he was the champ and they kept his and Nash's earnings potential down in the WWE. Bret would rather hold the belt instead of making more money
When you break it down though Scott’s idea that Bret should ask for more money in order for Nash and Scott could make more money is kinda dumb.
1) Shawn was making more money than both of them.
2) Bret negotiated with Vince every time his contract was up. We saw this when he almost went to WCW in 91/92 and WWF pulled the IC belt of him in case he did leave. We also saw it again when he negotiated a big pay increase before returning in 96. Essentially he was paid well. Scott even acknowledged that he missed his negotiating window when his first contract was up but made sure not to the second time.
3) Scott and Nash had no favored nations clause with WWF so there’s no guarantee that a Bret increase would lead to them getting more money.

Not saying he shouldn't have asked for a raise, but kinda awkward to do so when your employer can legitimately come back and say, "well look pal were fighting a couple of lawsuits and were doing some of the worst business ever soooo", I mean they had just let Hogan and Macho Man go, so I doubt Bret was trying to push the envelope too far.

At a time when their wasn’t guaranteed contracts? Their may have been a downside guarantee and that’s what they wanted higher as they were probably hitting that downside, but I’m not exactly sure. I remember all the 80s guys and even in the early 90s signings the only guarantee was 25 bucks for tv and if you got over you could make money if business was good off the house. As far as I know WWF didn’t change that until they signed Johnny B Badd he was the first guaranteed money in WWF.
Both Hall and Nash had the opportunity to get above Bret, Nash did get the belt at the end of 94 and held it for a full year, and both Hall and Nash left cause the pay they made in 1995 was lower than in 1994 when Bret Hart was champion. They’ve also said he was the 250k champ and 400 k champ (which is it? Cause they’ve said both). They (Hall and Nash) have both been quoted as making 400k in 1994 so we know that statement was BS. 1995 was the year of the kliq and they relegated the Hitman to mid card but they didn’t turn the business around it was the worst year ever. It wasn’t until 96 when Bret was champion leading into Iron Man match that they finally sold out Madison Square Garden for the first time in years. Their marks and their mad they weren’t more over than the Hitman.
Bret’s third title run was only to keep the title warm for Shawn. After the Shawn match is when Bret negotiated which was an option many say was opened
Up by Hall and Nash (it just so happens that Hulk, Macho, Nash, and Hall all leaving for the big WCW paydays as well as mean gene and getting Bobby Heenan from retirement that’s what created the WWF willing to give guaranteed contracts. Hall and Nash were like the final straws and than they were faced with losing Bret. So all these guys changed how money was made, especially Ted Turner who was willing to pay any big name whatever amount they wanted.
Bret Hart is the ultimate professional. He will show up sober and give you a great match no matter who the opponent is. If you need someone to be drunk and pilled up while no showing numerous heavily promoted pay per views, nitros and house shows then scott hall is your guy.

I remember that match between Disco & Bret way back in 99. I was madd young back then. I was always a fan of both guys, but it was a weird booking havin them 2 main event a live TV show when they had no kinda rivalry with each other. I had no issue with them working with each other, but that match could've been at the opening of the 2nd hour.

In Canada, or at least to this Canadian, Bret Hart is a dragon slayer. He felt Shawn had disrespected him after Hart told him he was happy to do the honours, and would not back down on that stance. Bret did take himself way way too seriously, but Scott Hall and the Kliq type guys cared nothing about it and just wanted big paydays. As a fan I would rather have Bret, but as someone with empathy for the person Bret really hurt himself a ton by doing what he did. There is a balance where you can see it as a business yet still enjoy your character and entertaining the fans. That's what the best typically did.

i'll be a WWE fan forever but I really do think that WCW will go down as the most intriguing wrestling company of all time. I can't get enough of these stories.
It always seemed like Scott Hall truly understood the business more so than Bret. The Hitman treated wrestling as his discipline, his career, his livelihood, his life, etc. Scott Hall viewed wrestling as entertainment, that he was just a performer and the whole business is to earn money (for oneself and the company). Wrestlers generally have short careers and even shorter lives, thus it's imperative to earn as much as you can, as fast as you can before your time is up.
Bret Hart reminds of a star athlete who stays loyal to a team and will take a "hometown discount".... how can others ever try to use Bret as a reference for salary negotiation? It's like if Michael Jordan signs for $1 million per year.... good luck for anybody else trying to get the same amount or even more. This is very bad for an industry were a little "oops" could easily derail your career.
Bret did eventually get paid more... but it seems like the main issue with Nash and Hall was that they thought Hart should have aimed higher when he was red hot.
I'm not trying to be a troll or dis disco in all honesty but 22 minutes with bret? Even sounds odd I could see 12 minutes if stretch it but not 22.

Lots of comments about Bret taking wrestling too seriously . I liked his style , no problem here . His attitude was or is a lot better than someone like Paul Logan ,he just said he didn't care that he lost at WrestleMania yesterday . Hard to get behind anyone who doesn't care .

Bret was the consummate professional. Hall and Nash were big talents, but they wanted get over and make money first and foremost. Hall would have much rather gotten paid better than have a heavyweight title run in WWF and make half as much. Bret thought more about being the champion and being held in high regard by others.

I feel like Scott Hall became "that guy" that wanted to point out that wrestling was fake. I don't think Bret protected his character because he "thought it was real" or "mark for himself" . Simply put, higher on card or being champion meant you made more money.

I think they felt Bret didn’t want his character to lose or only on his terms, and they felt they were doing what was best for the business. I don’t know if they were right or wrong but I’ve also heard that’s why hall never got the heavy weight , he said he could get over without the belt

Scott didn't get into too many fights with the other wrestlers in his wrestling days. He did get into a lot of bar fights from what I've heard. Also being 6'6 and a jacked up 270lbs or more in his early days probably kept guys from messing with him. He also said he was never afraid to throw down.
