I don't have high cholesterol or heart issues but in 2017 I had a microscope size infarction at the base of my brain. I only had 2 very short symtoms that prompted me to get myself to the ER. By the time I got there I was scared but nothing else was happening. They put me on a staten and I have been miserable since. My brain feels like it is going to explode. They have had me try every single brand there is including red rice yeast. Lovastaton is the last one that I'm attempting to take now. I take a half at bedtime and last night is the last time Im taking it. I have stopped taking it before for a time but then I get worried about it. THANK you for sharing this study. I want to live headache free again without fear. And now I feel like I can. YAY 😍 God bless you 🙏

I’m still overweight but I’m not taking a useless drug for the rest of my life. I had a follow up blood test and my results were just fine.. I haven’t taken a tablet. I'm a retired MD. Thank you for this. I fought the statin lie for years while working for large hospital systems and finally moved to private community access hospitals where I could practice real medicine and not be pressured to push meds people didn't need. When my own physician starts this nonsense with me, I have to grill her on the data. I realize she is pressured by the boxes she needs to check on her Epic charting and I feel sorry for her. I'm sure her dream of being a medical professional wasn't about making red boxes turn green and it's sickening to think of the waste of money and side effects people are suffering because so many doctors have become box checking automatons.

I was on statins for about 5 years. I’m heavy into lifting weights and know what I’m doing but I kept getting deep muscle pain all the time in my quads and biceps. Then I heard that was one of the side effects of the statins. I immediately got off them, my dr was mad at me over it, and all those pains went away and I haven’t had them since. Just over a year ago I went for my physical and got blood work. I DEMANDED they also write me a script for a calcium score test. She didn’t want to write me it because “‘it’s expensive “. Her words. It was $85. I got the calcium score test and blood work. I received the calcium score before the dr. It was 0.0. No plaque at all. I eat pasture raised eggs, venison, bison, and 100% grass fed beef. I have almost no sugar from any source in my diet at all. The dr still called me and wanted me to get on a statin because my overall cholesterol was 11 points high. Mind you I raised my HDL by 28 points but she didn’t care. I told her flat out I don’t give a @#$% what the number is because my calcium score is 0 so it’s not sticking to my arteries. She then threw the “family history” nonsense at me. My relatives all ate terribly and were heavy drinkers and smokers. I’ve had 5 alcoholic drinks in the last decade and have never smoked. I eat healthy and work out 4-6 times a week. Don’t let your doctors bully you. THEY WORK FOR YOU. If you don’t get along, fire them and get another one.

Same here. I do have a moderate CAC score however.. but my providers seem to not factor in I have normal BP, good resting pulse, good blood sugar, have lost 12 lbs because I do work out and ride the bike and have a very healthy diet . Their statins got me out of the gym and off the bike within one week in the zealous pursuit of a a number. They seem myopic on cholesterol and LDL. I thought all docs would want to get all patients on a diet and fitness program I am on and have been for many years

Thank you for writing this. I didn't know what a calcium score test was until I read your comment. I'm sorta in the same boat as you were. I had blood work done at the VA two years ago and was immediately prescribed a statin (without them even talking to me) because one of my numbers was 'high'. I refused to take them at the time because of some friends and also I'm aircrew in the military. I eat good (sounds like you eat better then me, I'm working on eating more meat), workout 2-3 times a week for 2-3 hours (I row for at least 30 mins). Well, fast forward to this week. I just got my blood work done again and my nurse practitioner is worried about my numbers. I'm trying to get as much information to refute him wanting me on a statin if he recommends me on one later. My numbers were total 167, HDL 32, LDL 115, and triglycerides 101.

It got so bad I had to cancel going to a funeral wake because I felt like an idiot unable to even have a conversation. I told my Doctor Who strongly pushed this drug on me and he laughed and said oh they give this to Alzheimer's patients and they get better. So I looked it and was surprised how ignorant this top-rated doctor was. The results are all over the internet and one of the top results was a book called Lipitor the thief of memory. I believe it was a former astronaut and airline pilot who had to check himself into an emergency room because he couldn't remember his name, because of lipitor. This proud arrogant and ignoramus doctor knew nothing about this, but instead told me that I need to follow the person with the initials behind his name.

He also told me you are more likely to get a heart attack if you have low cholesterol than high. Your muscles need cholesterol to rejuvenate and your heart is a muscle, a known side effect of stations is muscle deterioration. Then there is your brain which also needs cholesterol. Taking a drug to reduce cholesterol could actually be detrimental to your muscle and brain function.

I reduced Atorvastatin 20mg after 3 months intake to 10mg and months after had a bloodtest. The results enchanted the cardiologist, for him everything is perfect. He doesn't know that I reduced it. That shows again, that you must become your own doctor. In a few months I will reduce the intake to 5mg and then test it again. Conclusion, better change your food, get rid of the overweight, so you can reduce the intake and the side effects drastically.

Years ago, my Dr. put me on a statin and within two days, my vision had changed by over a diopter and I had horrible headaches. I immediately took myself off of it. I am convinced that Statins also cause dementia/Alzheimer's as they seem to remove fat from the brain. not the only culprit as Dr's we saying people had to stop taking in good fats and go on a low fat diet is also terribly damaging. Decades ago, I noticed my mother's friends who were brilliant, were being diagnosed with dementia. She attended a large congregation full of 50+ ages and they began dropping like flies.
I began to inquire, and they all attended the same geriatric group of Dr's who were heavy into dispensing statins.
Within two years, they had 200 deaths in that congregation, and they were all going to that same group of Dr's and all taking statins dispensed by these Dr's.

So my doc had me go for an angiogram because he just knew I was on the brink of a massive heart attack. Thanks for sharing this info. I am a now retired R.N. and my cholesterol went up following having TAH/BSO surgery following a diagnosis of endometrial cancer 20 years ago. Over the years I was put on several different statins and not much after would develop terrible muscle and joint aches and they would stop when I stopped taking the statin. I recently relocated to Florida following my retirement and established care with a new PCP and she encouraged me to try Lipitor again. So I decided to give it another try, and not much after I began taking the Lipitor I started to develop some GI distress. A month ago I woke up in the middle of the night with pretty intense RUQ abdominal pain along with nausea and had my husband take me to the ER. After having a gazillion labs done along with an ultrasound and abdominal CT scan which showed I had a gallstone. But what was more concerning was my LFTs were all elevated and my blood glucose which was basically a fasting draw was 150. I was given some Dilaudid, Zofran, and a dose of Zosyn and within a 1/2 hour after receiving those meds I was completely asymptomatic with no symptom recurrence over the next 8 hours of being observed. The ER doctor wanted to admit me but I opted to go home instead and agreed to return if my symptoms returned which is now going on a month and they haven't. I know what happened to me was caused by the Lipitor and the gallstone was an incidental finding.

I stopped taking both medicines and began eating low carbs, no sugar, working my way to one meal a day. Along with daily vitamin/minerals I added cod liver oil to my diet. What an incredible change. Later I came to learn that my BP was only slightly elevated, so by losing weight that would go back to normal. I also increased my fresh vegetable intake, no fruits or juices. Finally! A doctor who actually said something REAL and HELPFUL about cholesterol. Several years ago, my doctor put me on a statin (simvastatin) because my cholesterol was "too high". Six months into this "treatment" I had a checkup for something unrelated, and, a few days later, his office called me to tell me I had diabetes! I was shocked and depressed, because this had never been an issue before. I dug in and did some research and found out that statins can often give a false positive for diabetes. I stopped taking simvastatin immediately, and never heard the words "you have diabetes" again. Of course, I still get pressured every time I see the doctor about taking statin drugs, but I keep refusing because I know it's BS.

I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I tricked her off caffeine, then no prescription meds, forced her/tricked her/incentivized her to drink water, kept her away from high fructose corn syrup and other poison, because they made her mean and delusional, and kept her away from gluten. Funny thing is decades ago Dr. Oz said Zocor was causing memory loss and then my mother parroted that to everyone, but later on when she said it to a nurse practitioner during his assessment of a MMSE, he said she was delusional for saying that and this nursing home that I had to fight in probate court for 2 months to get my mother out, used it as a way to imprison her in a lockdown unit. Big Pharma is the matrix and we’ve got to break out. ☹

Last year I was in a terrible state with muscle pain and bursitis in the shoulder, diabetes, etc. I stopped all meds apart from strong pain killers, including the statins. I also was diagnosed with osteopenia and low vitamin D levels. I attribute most of the damage to the Atorvastatin, but also to Omeprazole for acid reflux, which also stops nutrients from being produced. It's been a slow recovery, but the diabetes has been reversed (I did go on low carbs for a few months) and I am now on HRT Testogel to correct the hormone imbalance and finally down off all pain killers.

She had built up plaque in her artery that was so hard they could not get a stent through it. The arteries in the heart went lower and built bridges and that's how she's been living for 40 years! She took cholesterol medication back then and even before. Cholesterol medications do nothing. I already have signs of build up my mother had and I'm at the same age as she was. The medication seem to work fine the first year so but then your cholesterol level seems to increase as the years go by. My mother also had echograms and other tests for many years, saw a heart doctor, yet they did not catch it. I'm very blessed because she is still alive and she will be 90 in December. As years went by it went to 280 to 240 to 220 now it’s 200. During this period of time the incidence of heart disease has not gone down, if you look at the Lipitor ad it tells you in the bottom right hand corner that basically only one in 2000 people find a benefit. So that’s a benefit of .05%. Pharmaceutical companies control the medical system they’re in it to make a profit and they want to sell you drugs that most people don’t need. As a 3rd generation pharmacist, I remember long ago that a cholesterol level of 300 was great. That is UNTIL Lipitor came out. THEN, it was decided by big pharma that cholesterol levels MUST BE BELOW 200. What a crock.
Inflammation is the problem. Statins do nothing for that.

I was on statins until a doctor told me that people with low cholesterol have a greater risk of developing cancer. He urged me to stop taking the drug. Besides, people with high cholesterol live longer. It's shown in large studies all over the world. I'm over 60 and my cholesterol level is 300. That sounds perfect!

Also pharmacist, but wait, lets be clear. Yes, statins reduce cholesterol, so, yay, the lab results look so much better - MD happy, patient happy.
However, lets address the REAL WHY. Why are we trying to lower that lab value- to LOWER morbidities ( stroke, Htn, etc) AND mortality (although I’ve always said one big massive heart attack is actually a great way to go, as long as one is old enough, ha).
Now, there’s the rub and THAT is what this MD is discussing- there needs to evidence- based PROOF of that- esp because statins are NOT BENIGN and “ heart disease is not a statin deficiency “ (that’s my quote, isn’t that great, ha ha)
Statins increase risk of diabetes and theres more evidence emerging statins may contribute to “brain issues” like memory loss ( I suspect the A word will eventually come out), zillions drug interactions, SE’s, etc.
AND they’ve NOT shown any benefit in WOMEN and (quote by N.Goldberg) ): “women are not small men”. So, definitely there is a difference between efficacy AND incidence of adverse effects between the sexes, with regards to statins.
What benefits women? HORMONES! Yup - check out the Cancer Journal 5/6 2022 ,V28,issue 3, p 208-23 : Menopausal Hormone Replacement therapy and Reduction of all cause Mortality and Cardiovascular disease.
Now we’re talking! ( for women, that is.).
      THIS.is.the.ultimate.goal.
Not lowering a lab value UNLESS its statistically & significantly proven to reduce (in honest research, ugh, a whole other issue!) morbidity and mortality.
Inflammation? Cut out sugar not naturally found in the food , UNhealthy fats, most alcohol ( ALL alcohol for women-> no benefit at all proven), substance abuse, CONSUME berries, seeds, small oily fish, practice stress recovery, blah blah blah , you all know the drill!
It is with a very heart that I do NOT trust all medical providers these days- many do not keep up with the literature - and/ or cannot change their beliefs based on data ( humans!).
I.e. the WHI released results that were NOT statistically significant ( research requirement 101 ), bypassed the Principle investigators interpretation of that data and presented via a press release first- it changed HRT tx for yearSss! To women’s detriment. Oh, and the participants were “ healthy”- which, btw, included 50% previous or current smokers. Ok. Sigh…
Sorry for the rant. Hot topic. Follow the current data ( not your 1 or 2 relatives, for crying out loud) keep an open mind and good luck!
I know what I’m talking about, I am almost old…..🥴🥴🤣

In the 8 years since my kidneys failed, I have learned that that the absolute MOST PROBABLE CAUSE of my renal failure was a combination of systemic inflammation and prescription drugs. and medical procedures. Since my transplant, I have gone off of EVERYTHING except for my anti-rejection medication (not even Prednisone) and I am the healthiest I have been since about 20 years BEFORE my renal failure.
And since going carnivore, my EGFR has begun to IMPROVE(!!!) to a point the my nephrologist - who has argued with me for years about statins, antibiotics, flu shots etc. has finally said "OK, I don't understand it, but whatever you're doing - keep it up because it's working". I cannot stress this enough, I was transplanted in 2014 and this year - in the last two 6-month checkups - my EGFR is in the green range... it is NORMAL EGFR!!! It has not been normal for decades.

Thank you!! I learned of the manipulation of the statistical numbers by big pharma a year or two ago. Dr. Nadir Ali, cardiologist in the Houston area, posted a lecture about this on You Tube. My internal med physician and my endocrinologist have been seriously trying to shame me into taking these drugs for quite some time, even though my lipid numbers were mostly within the normal range, with only occasional slightly above normal results. So many physicians can’t or won’t think outside the box. Drug companies contribute lots of money to medical schools and med students often reap the benefits. Med students are very influenced by the drug company propaganda without looking at the studies with a critical eye. That’s their bad. I commend you for bringing light to this topic. So many patients have been “snowed” by this practice and are afraid to ask important questions that could help ease their minds about their medical issues and meds. I could go on and on about this issue. Thank you for shining a light on this in common, every day language, so the public can begin to open their eyes and become more well-informed about the power they have to be able to have a stronger voice in their own medical care. The BIG problem for me, when I was on the statins, was the bouts of temporary amnesia. It was not total, but I would be commuting to work and suddenly nothing was familiar. This could induce a panic for a few moments until I could reassure myself that I drove that street daily. I could drive another block or two and everything would suddenly be familiar. I googled causes of temporary amnesia. Statins came out on top of the list. I stopped them both (Statins and blood pressure) several years ago. This internal medicine study is a meta analysis of randomized control trials, the very best kind of evidence we can produce. Often times in my research I come across a lot of meta analyses that are not randomized control trials but some lower or lesser form of evidence. An excellent find.

Thanks for your info, been watching you for 3 years or more. Great work!! My total cholesterol twice a year for over 40 yrs was never higher than 130, except 1 time I forgot to fast. I was in military, so blood every 6 months. Took insulin for about 8 yrs, got up to 100 units a day for last 3 yrs to 2017. Most Drs don't know as much as I thought, they can be dangerous. Vit D3 and other supplements probably saved me. I had quad bypass Dec 26, 2019, still low cholesterol, no docs could tell me why I didn't show signs, they called it widow maker. Anyway, I intermittent fasting, still do it, but not 18 - 6. I had gotten my D3 up to 140 and followed some of your advice on fasting and diet for about one year ... went from 9.2 A1C to 5.0, lost 70lbs in 3 mo's. Finally found out why I had 5 blockages in my heart. Drs couldn't explain it to me. My heart actually grew 2 blood vessels from left ventricle to the right side of my heart. Our bodies are amazing. I found insulin was cause of my blocked arteries. Seems insulin causes. LDL cholesterol to get sticky, which makes it stick to arterial walls , then buils up and calcium sticks to LDL, hence blockages. Insulin also takes blood sugar out of your blood to lower A1C, but then stores it as fat. I explained it to my docs, especially my cardiologist, she never heard of it before. I found a new cardiologist. She was not the surgeon, I haven't seen my surgeon yet.. Just wanted to say thanks for heading me in the right direction, else I wouldn't be vertical right now. Had a gallbladder removed 6 months after cardio event. It was worse recovering from that than the cardio. Keep up the mission you're on, cause there's no telling how many people you have saved and steered in the right direction.
