Nobody is denying that the bat did not hit the ground. It's obvious. The argument is that, it might have still nicked the bat, but the small spike got masked by the bigger spike (caused by bat hitting the ground). There is no conclusive evidence that these two events could not happen simultaneously. The gap seen in front-on view is too small. Might be caused by illusion due to camera angles. The umpire should have checked more angles to confirm this before jumping to not out decision. (Especially if he was relying on that gap to conclude that there was no edge).

Third Umpire was not sure that the bat has hit ground. If the evidence for out is inconclusive, it was inconclusive for not-out also. So in that case the decision given by ground umpires could have been uphold is what I think. This is same as in LBW if the ball is half way hitting stumps, decision given by ground umpire was upheld. If you zoom before the ball passing the bat and after, you can clearly see a change in the ball trajectory and the seem position after it passes the bat.
In the intensity of the game, Ashwin is missing to see that this was a fairly clear decision and one that was easy to understand. That middle Ultraedge meter in light blue is not the first thing or the only thing you look at in a DRS review. You see the left and right scenes first in each frame, and when the ball and bat does not have a gap in both, only then you look at the ultraedge for confirmation. If there is a gap between bat and ball where you clearly see the ground/pitch behind it, then the spike on ultraedge means nothing. Only when there is no gap in the left and right frame pictures is when ultraedge will be used for confirming
