It's my understanding that the use of pancake lenses is the cause of the minimal brightness. The panels are likely producing very high brightness, but those lenses are reflecting the light so much before the light reaches the eyes that it looks dim. This is where aspheric lenses could be better. My first priority is also increased sharpness, but increasing FOV is close behind. Those are the two areas I look for improvement from the Index. The audio is the glaring issue for me with this and other HMDs. It's not a difficult thing to know what would make a proper upgrade. Combine the following, and you're there: Much higher resolution with RGB stripe arrangement, uOLED panels if possible and local dimming if not, aspheric lenses, larger FOV than Index, and Valve off-ear audio solution. Ideally, also include driver-level DFR via eye tracking. It doesn't have to be the lightest thing ever to be more comfortable; lightness isn't a bad goal to have - just can't come at the cost of so many things. To be clear, this small software company did an amazing job with their first HMD. Just hope for more from someone soon, and even from Bigscreen in the future.
I LOVE it when two reviewers are in one place, cuz they bounce ideas off each other, and more insights come up. Same with the Matteo311 and Brad one, when two reviewers are in a room, so many new ideas come out, great stuff!!!!!!
To be fair, the Matteo and Brad review of the Crystal didn't feel professional at all. It felt more akin to two redditors validating each other on why they hate a device as opposed to giving a balanced review.
Preordered it last week. It will be my first VR headaet that i plan to get with the valve base stations and controllers. Almost $2000, but i'm hoping to get some really good use out of it for at least 7 years. Hyped for Alyx, RE7, Boneworks, Pavlov, Red Matter and more. I think with Quest 3 on the way, we should start to see more AAA games like Alyx

Funny you mention an overheating issue limiting the brightness. Sadlyitsbradly tested the earlier prototype at 200% brightness, on a full white setting, and the headset crashed. So there definitely could be issues there was cooling at the extremes. However, at 200% brightness, the persistence is getting very high as well, so that's another limit. Ultimately, the problem is that pancake lenses drastically reduce the brightness getting to your eye because of all the focal length folding they do with switching polarities in the light; Every time they need to polarise the light, you reduce the brightness by half.
For the nose, I think Tyriel Wood dig into the face gasket to make it more confortable. He also had pressure on the nose I hope they'll improve their face gasket making process .... ( and for a more polished touch )
Great discussion. Marco, the comment you made about the optics and color shifting starting at 15:30 are EXACTLY describing the problem I have with the Pimax Crystal. I take it you do NOT have these problems with Crystal, but you do have it with it with Bigscreen? I am trying to figure out is my Pimax crystal defective?
@@Henningdale Paradise Decay wasn't impressed with the Crystal. He said he had better clarity in the Quest Pro, most likely due to the optics. I've not used the Crystal but I've heard that you have to be right in the sweet spot for aspheric lenses to be clear, a slightly incorrect IPD or too high/low on your face will distort the image.
Love seeing you two together! Marco might've been a tiny bit too harsh on it, though, but I definitely agree with him on the gasket, especially as someone who lives in a hot and humid area.
When I listen to his explanation about the blurriness and color shifts at the edges of the displays, it becomes clear that the primary issues are the small FOV putting those issues well within his view as he moves his eyes around combined with the inherent issues of the pancake lenses. It didn't sound like the issues were due to the wrong facial interface shape.
@@DMan-ud6bt his IPD might be different from Sebastian;s as well. I skipped the first few minutes of the video to get to his thoughts so not sure if they mentioned IPD's or not?

i don't understand how you like the reverb g2, it had the worst vertical fov of any headset i tried which destroyed the immersion, also the sweet spot was too small on it.
Probably because the G2 has a lot brighter display and no one likes a dull screen. I will wait for the newer micro OLED displays to come out as they will be a lot brighter than this.
If you hate the vertical FOV of the g2 then you will totally despise the Beyond, give that it has lower vertical FOV (in fact much lower); it's like looking through a letterbox. Another issue not mentioned here is the persistence. If you hate motion blur in games you will not be able to stand the Beyond as persistence is an issue of mini-OLED.
You can easily improve G2 FOV and also sweet spot by using custom face gasket which brings your eyes closer to the lenses. Night and day difference comparing to the default gasket.
@@ondrejicek123 tried that, i also tried completely taking out the face gasket, the fov is still about the same as the screen it self is small i just end up seeing the border of the screen. When running in 90Hz mode, is the resolution constrained to 1920x1920? There are conflicting sources on this. It will be using DSC either way. But is it also having to upscale to 2560x2560 on the device or not?
Which is Marco's channel? I was curious to see his opinion on Quest Pro because he had very sincere opinion also about Aero and B&B. You guys are the greatest! Loved to see your trip to America.
I know he hated it at launch, which is still weird to me as I can't use any other headset now. The lenses are best in class, QLED and local dimming are great, the open design with no facial interface and an IR illumintor is super immersive, and it has the best inside out tracking, controllers and haptics. I think the only headset upgrade that interests me currently is Quest Pro 2 if/when that releases.
You mean simple LED and not QLED? I thought they will have the same panel as QuestPro but with almost Pico4 resolution. What do you mean single panel? One panel shared for both eyes, or one panel per eye?

This was a very good video. I would compare it to a good and bad policeman on the interrogation. 😂 Too positive Sebastian and too pesimistic Marco. With this combination we are getting a really honest review.
It's really difficult to give this review any weight unfortunately. As far as I know the custom fit face gasket is essential to getting the full tailored experience, so for all we know Marco could've had an increasingly lesser experience than he could've because of that fact :P

If you can buy Thrill, you can buy Marco, and its a bad review cause its not built for him anyhow.
Thanks for watching and commenting. MRTV can't be bought, these are Marco's first impressions. He has same IPD as Sebastian and the face gasket also fits fine.
