      Waiting on that Hypervision optical tech + inside out tracking + eye tracking (and hopefully a basic passthrough) + some kind of audio solution or headphone jack packaged in a form factor that sits between BSB and Pico 4. If I were buying now and exclusively a sim player I'd do the Crystal, if I did social vr or other game content primarily I'd go with the Beyond.

      Not quite cost effective for the experience to me yet. I'm buying pc hardware, games and stuff for the house. Not to mention trips, Disney and Universal tickets, rooms and airfare. If Im going to extend myself on VR, it has to be more affordable and come with the right bells and whistles.

    The lack of inertia induced motion blurring (as the headset shifts around on your face when you move) is a big plus to the BSB that I think is not getting enough attention. It lends to a far more natural experience looking around, where you are not subconsciously accommodating a display shifting relative to your eyes.

    Finally received my Beyond and this is finally the technology I've been waiting for since early Oculus prototypes. This is truly the best headset ONLY if your IPD is dialed perfectly, if not make sure to RMA this back to Bigscreen. Because even 1mm on one of the eyes will throw everything out. Also it may use better head strap.

    Got my Crystal today. Everything worked flawlessly out of the box, didn't have to do any tinkering at all, I think a lot of early reviews may have judged the software too harshly. It definitely delivers on the hype of the panels and lenses. The 8KX strained my eyes in a weird way that made me feel like I could never get the IPD dialed in just right, but I'm happy to report that the Crystal does not have that problem. However it is definitely uncomfortable, and I'm constantly fumbling with it on my head to make sure it's staying balanced in the sweet spot. I strongly agree that it's not the best choice for shooter games, for this reason. Looking forward to getting my Beyond to compare.

    I received the Crystal yesterday and I already decided to return it. It’s the most uncomfortable thing. Have ever tried… I’m a big guy and very strong but this thing is bulky and heavy and hurts my nose after 4-5 mins. The wobbling is big and hurts…. I have a motion system for sim racing and this makes the thing more uncomfortable and painful . I will be in the fence for the Big Screen … maybe il will have a bit less resolution and clarity and a bit less FOV but the weight is 170gr and it fits perfectly your face and won’t wobble at all with my motion system.

      Hello. Please make sure you have the headset adjusted properly. If the headset is touching your nose at all then it is not properly placed on the head. The back strap has to be positioned as far down the back of your head as possible. Under the crown of the head. The front of the headset should not sit on your nose at all. Only the light covers should make contact with the nose.

    I highly doubt the reason the Crystal is so big is because of the lenses..lol.

    • @khaledassaf6356
      @khaledassaf6356 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The official reason they gave, iirc, is that they went it to share the housing with the 12K so they can share accessories and so that development towards the Crystal would also be towards the 12K. So yeah, definitely not just the lenses.

      If we had used different shells it would have also required different PCBs, different faceplate accessories, different tooling at the factory, etc. End cost for the consumer would have been significantly higher if we had gone that route. This way the accessories are compatible between different models, we produce less waste and cause less damage to the environment. If dropping costs for the consumer while also reducing damage to the environment is bad, then lock us up.

    @Sebastian I was trying the Pimax Crystal today, I noticed quite some distortion depending on how you place the headset on your face. Very noticeable when the headset moves a little with fast head movements. Is that the aspherical lenses? Does the Varjo have a similar problem? How about other headsets?

    • @zackeryhardy9504
      @zackeryhardy9504 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its talked about at in the video. And yes it is the lenses. In particular it means you are not in the sweet spot. Where most VR headsets have their sweet spot based on calrity, the aspheric lenses are clearn no matter where you have it. But if you don't have it in the sweet spot the image will distort. It took me a while to figure it out, but I figured it out. The crystal actually has a pretty small sweet spot and if its really far off, just take the headset off and put it back on. that will trigger the fheadset centering feature which will help you get it in the sweet spot. When its there you get 0 distortion.

      The facial interface is custom fit to your face, but swapping it out for another wouldn't affect the set IPD of the lenses and panels. That is locked into place by spacer plates. At one time, it looked like these plates might be replaceable with others that could allow the IPD to be changed if needed, but even that would not be something you'd want to do repeatedly for two people with differing IPDs.
      Given that the Bigscreen team has basically been telling people in Discord and online that the IPD for each unit is fixed, I don't know if the production units will allow for the user to change the IPD at all.

      @@Spamuelow Yeah, the custom nature for each person is spun as a feature, but it is really just the result of a simpler design that allows the HMD to be lighter. None of the moving parts for adjustment of any kind means no weight from those parts.
      I understand the reason, but I don't personally consider it to be the best approach overall. I think the weight and size savings from using uOLED and pancake lenses is enough without sacrificing adjustable eye relief and IPD. That said, the fact that Bigscreen was formerly a software only company means that a simpler design may have been the smarter approach for their first hardware product.
      I do still maintain that every high end HMD should use Valve's off-ear audio or something comparable. Perhaps their on-ear audio strap will have great sound quality, but I don't think it's possible for it to be as comfortable even if the audio quality stacks up.

      High chance you would loose other features as well - just more PCVR. In a way, it was the smarter move. Its a bit of a setback depending on how you look at it, but its also a step forward for future headsets. BSB will have to also do the same in the future as things continue to have the features of a real compute headset that you can use anywhere - so their next headset more than likely have some of the same issues. Light house is kind of a dead end for stand alone - and more so for newer users that dont wanna setup a play space in one of the rooms.

      Really, Pimax should iterate on their 8KX to improve the form factor, weight, visuals and performance and price, but they just don't have the resources to do all of that.
      I think they should have built-in Lighthouse tracking into the headset as is, rather than charging extra for it, but it may be a revenue thing - to squeeze a little more out of most of their customers - Apple is really good at doing this with their products. In Pimax's case, I don't entirely blame them - even with their capital funding, they're really needing to get their best returns from sales for those capital investors.

    Great comparison, just one correction - BigScreen Beyond is not "a bit more expensive" in Europe, it's 50% more expensive which is a lot. PSVR2 and Valve Index are around 20% more expensive compared to the US price without tax - that's "a bit" 😉

      @@mixedrealityTV I'm comparing the official prices in dollars and and euro. Also there are some states that have no additional tax or that tax is very low.
      The official price of BigScreen Beyond on their US store is 999$ and in their EU store is 1369€, which is 50% more.
      If you do the exact same comparison for PSVR2 and Valve Index the difference is 20%.
      Valve Index without tax - 999$ (same as Beyond) vs 1079€ - 17% more expensive, almost 300€ cheaper than Beyond.
      PSVR2 without tax - 549$ vs 599€. 20% more expensive.
      Tax is irrelevant because it's different in each state and some states don't have it. In Europe countries have different vat rates (Poland has 23%) and yet the euro price is the same for all.
      The most obvious way to see the difference is to compare Valve Index full kit price, because it costs exactly the same as BigScreen Beyond - 999$.

  • @Nabukosonodor
    @Nabukosonodor ปีที่แล้ว

    22:26 I would define the controllers as very basic. Even when playing Alyx you get a lot of what I would call "noise". Trying to shoot at far away enemies is basically impossible because the controllers move so much even on their own and on the latest firmware. Head movement makes the controller move even when it's standing in place and the headset tracking sometimes makes you lose the standing height or floor altogether.
    The faceplate will probably solve most of this but it's not an acceptable solution as people have to pay for an add-on, base stations and controllers if they don't already own them. Best thing they could do is fix whatever they already have instead of shifting their development to the faceplate or whatever else they have in mind. This could become a finished product and sell much more even only because of its visuals which are really amazing. Except for a distortion problem in my left lens I see the same resolution as my monitor.
    I believe even though base station tracking will always be superior, inside-out will be the most usable in the future because of its simplicity and because most of the times it's just fine. If they can get to Pico 4 quality that would already be something as I don't expect they have the same resources as Meta. Also the standalone mode will need at least acceptable controller tracking, not what we have right now.

      Nothing to understand. Simply a matter of taste. I’m perfectly fine with 110 degrees of the aero as long as I have clarity and sharp graphics. I couldn’t use an 8kx for 5 minutes.

      A matter of taste I guess.
      I don't understand why people accept 1kg brick of these so called 'new' headsets. Not being able to quickly move your face without the headset Flying across your face is a deal breaker for me.
      I too would like a 170g headset, with 180 fov, 60PPD, 200Hz, perfect dark, very bright, ect. But form factor is my main concern so I'll go for BSB

    The Crystal looks like an 80s VR headset compared to the BigScreen.

    Doesn't the Beyond only work well at 75hz? That's what I've seen elsewhere..

    1.5 kilograms for a VR headset is insane, that's more then a motorcycle helmet.
