- With Blade and sorcery finally being fully released came with it so many improvements to the weapons themselves. One of the biggest improvements was for the spears and axes feeling 10X better, so I took this as an Opportunity to talk about my love for Spears!

If you havent already, you should watch Lindybeige's video on spears vs swords.
First weapon i used in RPG was Short spear and shield. But then once i evolved.
And made a Heavy armor plus the best weapon ever... THE pole axe, and Bardiche. But i really love Shields.
Nah mate, swords aren't just for nobility to show off, they are universal weapons for indoor.
Spears are too damn big to be used effectively indoors so you use swords. Also on walls for defense. It's different types of weapons but spears are indeed one of the best melee weapons possible on open fields and the like, especially for hunting animals. You would never hunt bears and the like using a sword in hand.
There are also halberts and other long range polearms, bur spears are the most basic easiest to use, you don't need to train people much on how to use them, therefore they were the favorite melee weapons in open warfare. Keep in mind though if you get your spear stuck on an opponent you're left with your sword, in real life you don't automatically get the spear out of everything by default.
And nah castles weren't build to be "claustrophobic" because of that at all. It's cause they didn't have metal like we got for building and all the rest, plus it's a good long term build.
Like castles to begin with were incredible hard to make and only the wealthiest had the resources to get them made. Now imagine if they wanted way more space in them... Just doesn't works. And spears wouldn't work regardless in the castles because of their short range. Like you think you got range with a spear? Try beating an archer inside a castle with a spear.
Yeah, apparently castles got archers, so a sword and shield is way better for attacking castles so you don't get shot to death in an enclosed corner cause you're busy 2 handling a spear.
And spears are lighter than axes? In which universe?
Mate, a staff is not a spear, a spear is at most times heavier than an axe, especially one made for war, way heavier. Like if your spear is lighter than a freaking axe, you ain't beating no armored swordsman out there. You do need a certain type of weight to beat armor. And a dagger vs a spear? Just take a solid shield... Smash the shield into the spear instead.
I love my pointy "stay the fuck out of my effective range" stick.
there's a big reason why spears are arguably the type of weapon with THE most kills throughout history. similarly to "why train an archer with a longbow for decades when a peasant can do the same with a crossbow and 2 weeks of training", why the hell would you train someone for much, much longer, with a much more expensive weapon, when a guy instinctively knows how to use a point keep away stick without a lick of training or experience
To be fair, spears probably don't have the most kills because they are extremely deadly weapons (although they can be), but because they are probably the most accessible weapons, being extremely cheap and simple to use. I'm not saying spears are ineffective, there's a reason they are still considered a solid melee weapon, but they might not be the PERFECT melee weapon.
@@antmolotov9449I still stand by the fact swords are perfect and other weapons are cheaper, easier, more specialized but lacking sub-species of the sword. Just think, how do you turn a sword into an axe? Remove an edge and the tip, shorten the other, elongate the shaft and separate the edge a bit more. How do you turn a spear into an axe?
@@victorvirgili4447 turning a sword into an axe easier than a spear into an axe means literally nothing. If you're changing the form factor of a sword, you might as well just change the weapon. Also, how do you turn a spear into an axe... have you ever *heard* of a Halberd? Bardiche?
@@antmolotov9449 their accessibility is what made them so lethal; a spear-wielding peasant who was conscripted a month ago could take down a (lightly armored) lifelong mercenary. And, at the end of the day, big long pokey stick is about as effective as weapons get
I think guns have most kills throughout history even though they are very new because modern wars are just so much deadlier now and way more people die. Also crime helps a ton people are shooting each other all the time.
I spear fight semi competitively and at one practice we decided to have me fight swordsmen. Each time I won we added another to the team of swordsmen until they beat me. I ended up winning against 6 swordfighters at once at which point we ran out of fighters to add to the fight.
I've tried them in blade and sorcery and they have always felt so different. Not having a real spear in your hands makes aiming feel strange.
In my experience the best counter to a spear is a shield. Putting a big piece of wood in the way of the spear is very effective especially against an untrained spearman.
On the point of having a dagger as a spearman, I carry a shortsword in my right hand as the same time I'm holding the spear It's very satisfying to sidestep someone rushing me with a shield and smack them in the back. Doesn't work as well once they know it's coming but still works often enough, especially if you bind their sword with your spearshaft while taking that sidestep.
I second a nice shield for working wonders on spears. Someone good with a shield has been pretty hard for me to get around.
Where do you manage to spear fight, by the way? I've always been interested but never knew where you could do things with swords and specifically polearm weapons.
Theoretically if they coordinated better they probably could have gotten you in the 2v1 consistently
@@kylezdancewicz7346 Probably. I can win 2v1 pretty consistently against most others at my club but that is because of the strengths of spears rather than my skill. If they coordinate well and work to surround me and crowd me into a corner I usually lose. That's when my shortsword does most of its work.
@@elongatedsedation324 Tried to reply but it must not have gone through. I fight with the Belegarth medieval combat society. They have groups throughout the US and a few in Europe. It's LARP adjacent in that we use foam padded weapons instead of gambesons or protective equipment but not many of the fighters I know are into the roleplaying scene, it's just cheaper to get a padded weapon than full HEMA kit. You can find a group near you via google pretty easily and they will have loaner weapons for you to try out. Of all the weapons spears are the most dangerous to start on as the biomechanics of stabbing people can cause a lot of damage even with blunt and padded implements.
I once did a essay that the entire point was that a spear was better than a sword. you listed every reason I did in that paper. THANK YOU FOR REINFORCING MY PAPER!
It's crazy how many people lack common sense. You keep reinforcing a false stereotype for years, and they'll start believing it.

Halberds are historically the final evolution of the spear.
You basically need a shield to have an even chance of sword against spear.
yea but halberds were also made useless by spears becoming longer, that’s why they kinda disappeared. since the heft of the halberd limited the total length you can make it, spears didn’t have this problem as much.
@@thatonedude2228 I'm curious. What do you mean by becoming longer? Afaik long-ass spears existed since before the Halberd was invented.
@@katzarkulHalberds began disappearing as the age of Pike and Shot came in, where Pikes and Arquebuses were becoming the mainstays of a lot of armies. Halberds saw less and less use because they had difficulty breaking up Pike squares and had even more difficulty with guns for obvious reasons. And halberds were just less and less used, while pikes remained in use as late as the late 18th century, with a famous rebellion in Ireland having their rebels armed with hundreds of pikes and at various encounters in the frontiers in America. A lot of forts that couldn’t afford/keep/access large stores of guns and ammo had pikes and sabres.
Pikes were pretty ridiculously long too, as short as 10 feet and as long as 20 feet. Pikemen would muster into large groups in a weird sort of revival of the ancient Phalanx, which had seen as much use since Rome had conquered Greece by outfighting the Phalanx with the Maniples and other tactics.
@@jacobkuchavik9367we could argue that spear still exist in modern military albeit under a different name, bayonet.
@@user-ro9zf9kz1h Absolutely.
Though I’d venture to say it has been shelved in modern warfare. Even in cases of hand-to-hand combat, the bayonet may not even be present, and we certainly haven’t seen many bayonet charges since the World Wars.
"Low skill ceiling"? One word- Partisan: A spear with a double edge and parrying spikes.
Main problem I have with spears in VR is that using them effectively means running the risk of denting my walls.
I’m sure you’ve seen lindybeige’s spear hema video, it shows that the counter of the spear is the shield! After all you never saw a front line of daggermen charging spearmen
the funny thing is, in blade and sorcery you can stab through most shields and pierce the person behind it
Yeah, which is why a left handed Spearman is the ultimate fighter. That point is always there and able to peirce. Your defense is meaningless. Lol
Swords have always been sidearms historically, they were for when you lose your spear or whatever primary weapon you have
Primarily, though not always. Odachi, Biden hander, and potentially even more niche weaponry like warbrands.
Again depends on the context, and in a civilian context- I.E just walking around, swords were ofcourse always ideal because of how easily they're worn.
Sidearm myth should be abolished
@@whiteeye3453Yes, let’s abolish having a backup weapon
@@themightycaolf6549the odaci is a greatsword, so it's a whole different beast from a normal sword
The only case that comes to my mind for swords being used as primary weapons is the Roman legionary.
But it was because they were used by highly trained soldiers with BIG shields and good armor to close the gap and counter spears
I am disappointed to hear no mention of the spear/shield combo!
it's a pretty significant tradeoff
Love that in blade & sorcery, especially with the shield bounce upgrade.
Most players are too weak to hold and thrust an actual spear with a single hand so its pretty rare
The only way that would work efficiently in the game is if the player character was stronger or if short spears were available and I’m 99% sure they aren’t. But that would be really cool especially if they added tower shealds
@@krieger8825 what about the romans?, they mostly use pillums and sheild
Fun fact halberd we’re made so you could use your body more than the actual weapon to do damage for example: they would (if they were strong enough and usually would be) they would kick and bring the force of their body and the halberd down with a strike to the head
I thought this was done with every weapon, a majority of stances and guards have a shit ton of structure so that you can put your core and legs into a swing. Or im misunderstanding.
The only problem with halberds is that some fun hating people just make spears that are longer then Them to out reach em.
One undercooked value of the halberd is that it can “catch” things, that area between the axe and the spike is perfect for catching thin wood poles, weather it be spears or it you need to push an invaders ladder off of a rampart from a safe distance
@@antikythera7318 that’s cool

This is like almost my dream video, spears and Blade & Sorcery are like my favorite weapon but you missed a crucial part of what makes the spear so great in B&S, its ability to use it as a pogo stick. Its crazy fun and a work out to bounce around like its a pogo stick and use it in unconventional ways.
First thing, while pogo-ing you can go like 3x the speed the player can run at which allows you to speed across the map and its like bunny hopping where you can keep gathering speed but i think there is a airspeed cap though but its pretty high.
Second, you can cancel all your fall damage by just pogo-ing before you hit the ground and you will take zero fall damage if its dont correctly. You can also use the falling momentum and pogo off a slanted surface and transfer the falling momentum into horizontal momentum and get a speed boost as you hit the ground.
Third, you can jump higher than a normal jump, i would say in perfect conditions you can jump 2x higher.
Fourth, just the parkour ability in general, you can easily bounce around at fast speeds and bounce off of walls and if you a precise enough you can bounce off of small ledges and do accurate parkour.
Fifth, because of the fast speeds and high jumping ability you can cross big gaps that are even impossible when dashing mid air. I havnt tried it yet but theoretically you should be able to dash with the spear and stack the dashing and get up to high speeds fast.
Sixth, its kinda situational but you can use to to have a easy to grab bar that you can imbue with fire and throw it and then reliably grab onto it.
Seventh, also situational but if there is a high wall and you have the boar spear you can use the teeth on the side of it and jump up and hook onto the edge and pull yourself up and the length of the spear helps with this too.
Eighth, its not that useful but if you have the arm length multiplier to elastic man you can stick the spear into the ground at an angle so it doesn't come out and you can then keep running forward and then if you jump it flings you back towards the spear so its just a poor mans dash and you can use it to fling yourself into enemies or to cross gaps.
There is probably more that i forgot about but i highly recommend using the spear as a pogo stick because its fun and if you get good at it then you can easily traverse the dungeon or just getting around.
Edit: so you can do a dash forward with the spear but you have to stand on the ground for it to reset, so you can do a dash and gain quick speed and then keep pogoing to keep the speed.
I remember discovering the pogo thing near the barons sleeping area, I was using a spear I didn't buy yet and I made me jump much higher than normal. Never thought about using it practically though, also just discovered you can jump SUPER high if you use hyper slowmo
I recall that shepherds in Grease do that.
Something you should try is pogo-ing with a wand enchanted with gravity magic and jumping at the same time. I won't spoil it, but it's pretty cool.
I uh, I think the video was more about realistic applications of spears and not VR exclusive ones.
Historically speaking, the best counter against spears are missile weapons - javelins, bow and arrow, and so on. In order to be safe from those you need to either switch to one handed spear use (which doesn't have all of the avantages you talk about), or pick another weapon. Having a shield also makes dealing with a spear much easier, as it nullifies the threat of thrusts to a degree as it covers a large area (it's still hard as shit to approach a spearman in HEMA, especially if there are friends around them, but it can be done). In a 1v1 duel against a swordsman you'd definetly be better off with it, the problem is that 1v1 encounters are either you being jumped by someone unexpectedly, or there's a code of conduct and weapons are decided beforehand. In the first option the only weapons you're likely gonna have available are your hands, legs, a knife, and probably a sword - because swords are (with the exception of greatswords), in pretty much every culture they appear, a sidearm - designed specifically for the ease of day-to-day carry. Way too many misconceptions arise from people who want to rank weapons like they would in a video game - just picking the best stats and attack patterns, and don't take into account the historical context of where said weapon would appear. Another weakness of the spear was likely getting stuck in targets, especially if you happen to thrust at a shield. Withdrawing it after a kill may have not been as easy and straightforward as it is in the game, and losing the spear in combat was common - every spearman always carried a backup weapon.
Love the use of Lloyd faces.
There was a reason tue spear was the most widely used weapon in military history for most of human history. There was ALSO a reason a dagger was tue most common bacl up weapon
I personally love bardiches/halberds and glaives all because they are just spears and axes mashed together. I also love how they have so much weight at the front, because if you get that blade moving, not only will it absolutely _SHATTER_ bones, you can’t stop it because of how much momentum there is behind it! You obliterate anyone’s guard just by swinging the thing at high velocity in their general direction
yea and the halberds geometry made it pretty easy to „catch“ weapons and hook people, which made it popular for guards.
only drawback is that you can’t make them THAT long because of the weight.
Halberds became standard around the same time that plate armor was commonly seen on your average foot soldier, as they had the ability to penetrate armor that a spear could not.
Additionally, in battles MANY spearmen did not have the room to backpedal, and the presence of enemy archers often necessitated a shield. A shield means you lose a GREAT deal of control over your spear. A spearman can defeat a better trained swordsman 9/10 times, but if they both have shields, the odds begin to tilt ever so slightly in the swordsman's favor. After all, Rome defeated the phalanx with a tower shield and short sword.
Also, swords come in many sizes and many can be wielded effectively in close range. Daggers however are still an excellent backup weapon.
Lastly, axes and any melee weapon is not as heavy as youd think. They rely on leverage to deal lethal force. Theyre rather light, but the leverage and momentum can make fighting against its force difficult nonetheless.
the spear may be the best, but the funnest, no. nothing could never be more fun than using your inventory, what i mean by this is that props can kill, and you can store props in your inventory, using my inventory i have made a new magic known as prop generation, I can pull a whole chair out of nowhere, not to mention bowl duplication

4:42 I mean... half-swording is definitely a thing. It's a bit harder to do than with a spear, but you can absolutely achieve that same result with a large sword.
4:40 Its important to note that the center of mass is directly above the guard on longswords. So that helps a bit.
Robinswords channel has a few vids on halberds but basically they were a squad weapon and not a 1v1 weapon, as well as being an axe to chop down houses during house fires and also just being a really tall object that stands out in a crowd so citizens can identify a town guard easily and from a distance. They usually had spear point butts on the other end so you could manipulate the back like a very weightless spear while holding the heavier axe side. The halberd was a weapon, tool, and police uniform.
Allow me to introduce to you, The Swordstaff. All the reach of a spear, all the defensive versatility of a sword, all the piercing power of a warhammer via the crossbar, all the stab speed of a spear, more leverage than a sword, all the slicing power of a Greatsword. The best of everything and my favorite Polearm by far.
All the offense of a sword aswell as more, with none of the convienience!
Problems with handguards on polearms is it is harder to change grip as fast, german greatswords or similar with the leather wrap ahead of the primary handguard would be less effective as it is harder to change to and from the grip as easy, some pollaxes have mini handguards a few inches from the head but it wouldn't be that detrimental and with weapons of it's nature it was more focussed when hitting plate on hitting hard which sometimes needed extra time to prepare a good square on hit to stop it sliding and deflecting
@@somerandoinaknightsarmor9938 Go take your convenience into battle, good luck.
@@theprancingprussian I... didn't mention handguards? The crossbar is for deflecting and disabling an enemy weapon.
@@justsomejerseydevilwithint4606 I will take my convienience into battle, but as a sidearm. A pole is objectively better in war, but how do you carry one on the streets without raising eyebrows? These weapons are built for different situations.
the amount of passion you have for weapons is really nice
things you can do in VR: using melee weapons at their full potential... and desecrating NPCs
You listed a lot of the reasons I talk about when saying why swords are cool, but spears are so much cooler and beat them every time. The range, thrusting power, speed, when you mentioned how they were easy to use and yet still had a high skill ceiling I nearly cried. You are absolutely right that the spear has been done so dirty by media and people need to do it justice.
Something that was touched on but not talked about too much was how versatile they are, they can of of course be good in both open fields and tighter battle environments as mentioned but what people often don’t give them credit for is that part of what that means is that the spear is actually great at defense because of its shaft. This is another reason why the “if you can just get past the spear point you win” argument is so ignorant. This may be true of untrained spearmen, but those who are even somewhat trained in wielding it will be able to use this same chambering ability that makes the thrusts so powerful to quickly switch to defend themselves essentially just as well as they could with a sword, which is more than enough to give them the time they need to re-establish their range advantage. This is why spears beat long swords and anything shorter every time.
I actually disagree with the assessment of what spears would be beaten by on the battlefield, daggers would be even worse than swords in my estimation unless paired with something but then I think that would be the real star.
This is also where I’ll actually defend swords because there is a certain type that was quite literally designed to do so and did very successfully, however it lacks the ease of use, overall speed, and versatility of the spear. Great Swords or whatever your favorite term for large two handed swords is have enough length the close the range gap, and their weight allows them to knock spears off target which helps them deal with the spear’s fast thrusts. Additionally, while they are slower than other swords and spears overall due to their greater weight and size, they are by no means slow or unwieldy, they are still much lighter than most people realize. Most importantly, they often have similar attack speeds because the proper way to use a great sword is by utilizing the momentum your swings generate, carrying that into the next to create some extremely fast and powerful swings that are very hard to deal with. This is how a Biking Berserker was able to kill something like 25 - 40 spear men defending a bridge, and he was only defeated when one of the enemy soldiers got under the bridge and stabbed him in between the legs through the floor boards.
This is also why large axes are even better for countering spears because because they have all of the advantages of great swords while being slightly faster and more agile, but most importantly they also have the ability to hook and control the spear head which is the best strategy to use against it by far. It’s so good that it even makes one handed axes an extremely good counter to spears, possibly even the best as they have the speed to match the spear and actually can handle the range advance much better than any long sword or shorter sword could. They are absolutely my personal pick for how to peat spears.
The only reason that weapons like great swords and pole axes didn’t beat spears in popularity or even overall battlefield performance is that even though they could consistently defeat them one on one on the battlefield, they had many set backs that made fielding them in an army beyond special unit types impractical. The first being the fighting style, these weapons rely on large swings and thus wide spaces which makes them unsuitable for combat in close ranks with other frontline soldiers. It also makes them even more unsuitable for combat in tight quarters than spears, who can at least get by with thrusts alone at worst, this becomes slightly less true for axes but not by much. The thrusting style of spears makes them perfect for combat with comrades, and still allows you to use wide swings and cuts when the situation calls for it, and allows you to operate without losing too much effectiveness in tight corridors and similar battlefield environments. The final most important piece is that great swords and big axes are limited to only being wielded in two hands, where as even longer spears can be comfortably used one handed. This is absolutely massive because it gives spears the ability to have a shield or another weapon in your other hand while still having the power of a two handed weapon. The only weapon that these drawback don’t apply to are as mentioned before one handed axes, but this makes sense as we see that these are also a much more common battlefield weapon throughout history than swords. Spears are just so much more versatile, cheap to make, easy to use, and can still consistently win against these weapons designed to counter them in single combat, that they are the only option when it it comes to deciding what your standard issue main weapon should be for an army reliant on melee combat.
This is why spears should be the hero weapon of media, not swords. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

Funny enough I experienced this while playing Battle Talent without even realizing it.
I love swords, longswords specifically, I've looked at a lot of videos of stances and fights and tried emulating them because I wanted to feel badass in VR, instead of just a clumsy, lucky oaf.
However, I found myself gravitating more to the viking and spartan like weaponry, a short spear and a shield or a shield and axe. I felt badass and strangely lethal, chopping off heads and limbs and clearing out entire hordes without getting as much as a scratch. Even now looking at Blade and Sorcery 1.0 (It's sad that I have Nomad so I can't play it yet), I'm not looking forward to picking up a sword, but instead picking up that dual blade staff that was in the 'special' category and pairing it up with a shield + knife and the body/mind path. I never realized how good spears were, until I watched this video and thought back on my gameplay

This but with most polearms, Halberds being my favorite
Halberds are just great. Best of both the axe’s swinging force and the pokey
This is a very informative and a great a great video in general, but, I’m still going to use a sword in blade and sorcery 👍
I LOVE HALBERDS !!!!!! ANY POLEARM IN GENERAL I LOVE SM ITS SO GREATS
this is a sort of minor nitpick about the video, I agree with your points mostly, this is coming from HEMA practitioner, you definitely can grab the center of a longsword, and any other sword for that matter. It's one of the most common techniques for using a longsword, and it's why longswords have historically been just as prevalent as spears. it's called halfswording. also, the shield is the spear's greatest enemy. spear grabs are rare, but what isn't rare is being thrown completely off balance by a buckler shield. I regularly beat spear users just with a dagger and a buckler. it isn't easy by any means, but to be completely honest it isn't that difficult either. the 3v1 video you mentioned really has one major flaw as an example, and it's that everyone except the spearman has pretty rigid footwork. all of these are pretty simple flaws, but to be honest I agree with you for the most part.
Most of his point are spear waking
Longsword have never been anywhere near as prevalent as Spears. I want to believe you but like how do you come to that conclusion? There's no source that would ever say that.
YES FINALLY
SPEAR APPRECIATION
I love polearms and my favourite has to go to the halberd
0:06 THE RED MIST?!?!?!!
Tbh my favorite weapon is the odachi from the katana mega pack because it’s big like a claymore but also very light, also u can halfsword it for close range.
Finally someone who understands the majesty of the spear!
I like all the faces used from the greatest land developer, good taste.
I've always been a hammer guy. Big, chonky, Bonky.
Perfection.
Don't forget War hammers they're basically a mix between a staff and a hammer the ultimate bashing weapon
There is a great HEMA video by Nick Thomas that shows how hard it is for a sword and shield to get inside the spear guard.
Axes are super fun to use and make you feel like a barbarian. Especially dual sided axes like a labrys, make you bashing in your enemies heads fun and stylish. Another thing i'm a fan of not many others like, are machetes and medium sized blades. They work as a light work sword and just a long dagger.
Can't beat weapon triangle advantage with the +15% hit/dodge
i use bone point spears a lot actually and hunted with them on a few occasions their very effective in ambushing jackals and seagulls and very good long range weapons after a bit of training and most importantly very versatile i could thrust throw ambush and turn them into an atlatel for more effective range and energy when throwing
Not surprised. Warframe(not a vr owner) always had spears and polearms as the best long range melee. And the fact its horde game it matters hpw many you hit with a swing.
That was the strangest way I've ever heard anyone pronounce Skallagrim before
Yeah swords were mainly self defense or back up weapons, while spears and pole arms were the primary weapons on the battlefield. There’s been multiple tests done with sword vs spear and spear almost always wins. 👍
Even in some cases where the spear users were only experienced with swords yet still dominated with a spear. Swords are easier to carry and don’t get in the way as much as a long spear shaft does. Making swords better and more convenient back up weapons or self defense weapons. But on the battlefield spears dominate
One of the reason most powerful gods are depiected with a spear or a different version of it
And one of the things I love about the halberd, and other variations, is that it is a axe and spear and warhammer(sometimes) I one
0:07 RED MIST!!!! PROJECT MOON REFERENCE!!
Man conquered the earth with the spear, the club and the sling. Everything else was redundant.
Man now I wish blade & sorcery had a sling. A simple rock sling is incredibly deadly and very simple to make, carry and use.
So basically an axe is just a really sharp club.
Your thumbnail looked like viking dday
Why is your blade and sorcery so good did they update
lloyd frontera jumpscare
ps. loved the video you got a new sub from me :3
Grabbing the spear is the hard counter
The sword and shield combo is definitely the kryptonite of the spear. That is assuming you aren't in full plate and gambeson. At which point the spear is better replaced with a poleaxe
That’s the thing. A lot of people just don’t get that a spear doesn’t NEED training to use. They’re the biggest example we have for genetic memory.
Go outside. Find a stick. Depending on the shape, you will AUTOMATICALLY classify it as stabby stick or smashy stick. It is genetic. It has survived half a dozen mass extinction events. It is the oldest weapon of humankind, the most bloodied weapon in our entire evolutionary history. When all else fails, we sharpen some fucking sticks, and we get to fuckin work.
Well to be fair the part of our evolutionary history during which we could stab at all was a few million years at most. The half a dozen mass extinction events is much older.
One thing with the weight of halberds is that the axe blade on them were on the smaller side and thinner to fight against the extra weight. I know that’s not 100% all the time but in some of them it was true
4:37 I have made a bit of googling and the center of mass of a sword seem to be a bit higher than the grip and their is technic that involves grabbing the blade of your sword (it safer than it might sound)
That said, for my knowledge, sword are generally better in close range, you’re just never going to get their, and if you do, that what back up sword are for.
Also, I believe in polearm supremacy.
Edit: A lot of polearm and alberd add a buttspike at the back, giving you a light spear if you need. You can also transition from buttspike to front with a very mean strick.
Robinsword has made wuite a lot of video about albert (and sword, obviously)
