    This is simultaneously the most stable and efficient design for a pure helicopter.
    It beats anything with a tail rotor and is better than a flat plane, counter rotating chopper. The latter two designs are superior because they use 100% of their generated power for lift.
    The dual rotating wings have both positive and negative dihedral at the same time creating extreme stability in forward flight.
    This is why this design is used as a heavy lifter.
    Did you see how fast and smoothly it shot straight up! Many other designs would have hit their torque limit trying to do that and either stalled below the critical minimum rotor rpm and lost control or dropped straight down for a airframe damaging landing (as well as the pilot suffering spinal compression.)

      It is an optimum design for heavy lifting, but the cruise speed is slow compared to conventional helicopters.

      If it was such a great heli design, every helicopter manufacturer would be making them like this! I suspect these are a one trick wonder that are a compromise in every other area.

    Saw one in a hangar in the Boulder airport. Power company contractor leased space from the A&P that owned it. It was a beast of a helicopter. They used it to drop power poles in the backcountry. He said it was insanely expensive to operate.

      @@brianpulscher6514 I worked on this helicopter in their Moosup , Connecticut facility. The core of the blade is made out of wood strips that were glued together and pressed together in a machine that held it together until it dried . Then the excess glue was taken off and the block was put on a machine where the basic shape was carved out. Then it was fitted with a metal skin. Hard to believe that the blade is made out of wood but it is true.

    Didn’t the Germans pioneer this design during WWII? I seem to remember seeing a picture of a number of them lined up. Smaller in scale with open cockpits.

    • @NonEuclideanTacoCannon
      @NonEuclideanTacoCannon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sort of, but not really. There were barely any helicopters used in WWII, they were not nearly as well developed as fixed wing planes. The Germans did use a dual-rotor Focke-Wulf, but the rotors were spaced far apart on a truss structure, not coaxial or intermeshed like this. I think the Soviet Union did the first design like like this one.

    • @joemcsilver8098
      @joemcsilver8098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. It's the Flettner-system. It was developed by the german engineer Anton Flettner. The first helicopter using this system was the Flettner Kolibri.

    • @h53se
      @h53se 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The diffrent between Flettner and K-Max is control of blades. Fletner had conversional push rod, K-Max has control tabs on each blade.

      @edmadejek345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@h53se They were commonly known as servo flaps you are absolutely right . This eliminated the use of a tail rotor.. Charles Kaman originally worked for Igor Sikorsky but when Sikorsky didn’t want to listen to Kaman’s design changes he left and formed his own company. The H-43 Huskie had the same design.

      I would suggest that you have some lucky friends. It isn't as though there are a whole bunch of these things flying. If you're someone that managed to score a gig flying these regularly, you're a rare person indeed.
      The Kaman helicopter design has always intrigued me. I saw an Air Force Huskie fly at an airshow when I was a kid. I remember it didn't sound like any of the other helicopters I'd ever seen. The intermeshing rotors made a unique sound, and the design just fascinated me. The control system on these intermeshers is a real bit of design genius. The original design started coming together in the late 40's and early 50's. And it's all mechanical, no electronics, no computers. It's as simple as possible to do what it needs to do, and it is very robust. The Kaman helicopters were one of the few American made helicopters that were breaking and setting new world records at the time. The Soviet Onion was dominating the helicopter scene at the time and continued to do so for a long time. Kaman was the only US chopper company the was really in the competition.
      When the K-Max came along, it also broke and set a number of world records. In Iraq, the military operated both manned and autonomous versions of the K-Max and set some more records while doing it.
      Unfortunately, I've never seen a K-Max in person, there are none operating in my part of the country.
      It is an incredible machine that performs some pretty incredible feats. And I'm envious of the folks that get to fly, or even see, them on a regular basis. Lucky sonovaguns.
      Very cool video by the way. I subbed.

    With all due respect, would logging (pun alert) time in such a helicopter be looked down upon later when applying for conventional heli job?

    • @waynearrington6727
      @waynearrington6727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I logged, fought fire and placed power poles in the Kamax. It does not fly like any other helicopter out there. My opinion is that if you can learn to be handy in a Kamax then you can fly anything. It can be a bit of a wrestling match, especially on a windy day. On the positive side it can do things that no other helicopter that I know of can do. On the whole, I much preferred to fly anything else.
