  • Adobe Lightroom is a powerful program for image organisation and processing, but it can be a headache if you don’t understand how to use it correctly. This session will be helpful whether you’ve used Lightroom for some time, or are just considering getting started. We will cover the following topics:
Lightroom catalogs - what they are and how they work
how to fix your catalog mess (if you have one)
    Importing. organising, and reorganising images
keywording and collections including smart collections
    backup strategies
    resources for further reference
    About Judy

She enjoys the post-processing side of photography as much as the shooting side, and does presentations on minimalism, building blocks of composition, photography as a spiritual path, and “getting to wow” with your images. Hi Judy Thanks for a very informative video on Lightroom. My question to you is can you put your lightroom catalogue on an external hard drive and your photos on a second separate hard drive. Unfortunately my iMac is only 8GB of ram. Thank you for your great contribution.

I like your approach to the filing convention used in LR. I have been using LR from the time it did not have a version number and now I am using LR5. All of my versions have been the legacy standalone versions. I am not really a fan of the cloud versions and how Adobe has somewhat hijacked our independence for version(s) that were paid for. But I still love how it works even though I can't get updates. My filing system uses the following format: "Year_RAWFLOW-Main_Workflow\ImageData". I attempt to keep my images filed by year "2001_RAWFLOW" and under that in a folder by the day, D01_"Event". And yes, I copy all of my files to the appropriate folder before working in LR, since I create the main folders - Year_date at the beginning of the year. This process has been really easy for me to manage my images and find them when needed.

I'm with you on the cloud issue. I use LR Classic, and avoid the cloud altogether.

Hi Judy I think I have made a complete mess of my photos. I have just watched your webinar and I have been doing exactly what you said not to do - moving things around in finder not LRC. I made the mistake of using LR app so I could do quick edits but now I realise I need to use Classic. When I look at the folders in Navigator some have ?. When I hover over any folder the path varies. Some folders don’t have a ?. When I click on any folder (even with ?) a photo will appear. How do I solve this problem? I know I must have multiple duplicates in multiple folders!! Do you offer private assistance? I’m in Australia so needs to be video conference. Thanks

Hi Lisa. I'm sorry you're having such problems. I do offer personal assistance... my fee is $75 Canadian an hour. I do see 2 issues, though, in helping you. One would be the time difference (I'm on Pacific Daylight Time, like Vancouver) and the second would be payment, as I don't use Venmo or PayPal. If you drop me a note at Judy.Hancock at mac.com I'll try to give you some first steps via email... no charge.

Something I am not getting...I, too, have a Mac. Isn't the Pictures folder located on the Mac's hard drive? How would I keep photos on an external drive and have them in Pictures at the same time?

Hi Charles. I keep my photos on an external drive and the folder something like "Judy's photos". Then I just import them into LR. You don't *have to* use the Pictures folder on your Mac. If that's not clear, comment again and I'll try to help. (And if you have photos in your Pictures folder on your Mac that are already in your LR catalog, set up the folder on your external drive and then drag them to that folder *within LR*. If you move them in the Finder, LR will lose track of where they are.
