suleiman knew that if mustafa or bayezid became sultans they would eventually overshadow his accomplishments and greatness and he didnt want that to happen so he left the throne for the useless incomptent selim
Suleiman himself caught selim red handed atleast he should see the difference between selim and Prince Mustafa & Prince beyazid.....
it was precisely because of this that he felt comfortable around Selim. Selim could never go against his father even if he wanted to, he was that "weak", so Suleiman trusted him the most because of it. Bayezid and Mustafa could rally armies against Suleiman with relative ease thus it made him immediately distrustful of their mere existance.
