I loved this Q&A, thank you so much for doing it. I feel so blessed to be a born and raised kiwi girl and you have reminded me how wonderful my country is. So glad you are a fellow kiwi with us now
Going through your vlogs at the moment and have to say these are the best I’ve seen on moving to New Zealand. It’s a big dream for me and my GF to move here. Doing research on the best places also. We are early 50s and late 40s and hoping that we aren’t too late in life to be able to do this. 🙏
Awesome Q&A, I still watched even though I have grown up in NZ lol. My Aunty lost her wallet the other week at the warehouse with $500 in it, it was returned to the front desk with all her money still in there. Love NZ and glad you're loving it here too :)
hi i also live in NZ and from watching this its made me relies that i take so much for granted i am so lucky to live here i love it. My nana actually has students from other countrys come to live at hers for awhile shes a great person :D
Iam from East Timor living in uk, in scotland I lost my wallet with £250 pounds in it inside the taxi and the taxi did not return it to me, that's really scumbag.
Thanks Jen. Your tip about someone's " why" is the key . I have decided to experience another part of the world because I do feel anxious knowing one of my biggest regret in life will be not stepping out of my comfort zone.
I am so never moving to New Zealand and yet this was utterly fascinating. What a great job yet again, Jen. Also, the background is faaaahbulous! Just fab!
Thanks a lot for this wonderful Q&A Jen. Such a huge help for people contemplating on migrating to NZ like me. Now I am more convinced :) I am a fan of your channel. Keep the videos coming :)
Wow, you have lived such an amazing adventure. It makes me a bit sad to think that my husband really wanted to move to New Zealand but I discouraged him because of our families here. But if only one person wants to make the move then that isn't a good enough 'why' as you say. You are so kind to take the time to make these videos to help others considering the move.
Thank you very much for being honest in your videos when it comes to moving to New Zealand. I am currently living in the United States but I am wanting to leave for New Zealand really badly. But still awesome video. =]
Hi Jen. thank you so much for such a well done and informative Q&A vlog. it was extremely professional, well thought out and informative with so much heart. My wife and I appreciate you advice and need all the encouragement we can get, especially the verification of all the kiwis real life stories on how safe it is...truly motivational! I've been postponing replying to you email until I saw your vlog. With the major time difference to South Africa ill try to get on that as soon as I can. Till then Thank you for answering all my questions, you doing real informative great quality work.
Really awesome Q&A! This video helped so so much. We live in South Africa and we just stared the process of immigrating to NZ. There just isnt a future for our kids here in South Africa and crime is getting out of control. We are homeschooling our kids but after watching your video im really happy to hear how good your schools are and would really consider put my kids in school. Thank you so much for the positive words at the end. its really is a LONG process and so much work but it all be worth it
Hey there. Awesome video on your move and current living status down there in New Zealand! My family and I are in the process of getting a work permit to move to Kaitangata New Zealand and this Q&A video is very helpful! Were so very looking forward to moving to New Zealand as we are currently living in Argentina! I hope you can keep on making new videos on your life in NZ and what we could somewhat expect! Lots of Love!
Ooh exciting!! All the best with your move. Please let me know if you have any more questions you'd like answered, I love making these videos and connecting with people on their own adventures.
I am dreaming of migrating to NZ with my family and it is so much harder coming from our country. It feels like a long shot but you inspire me so much. Your NZ videos are really helpful and I feel like I wanted to move there for the same reasons that you did. xoxo
Hmm. I thought NZ was as hot as Australia in the summer. Actually kind of a bummer to hear it's not. But as a Minnesotan, I'm sure it'll still be plenty warm for me =P we may be moving there or London for my partner's thesis work. On another note, I had no idea home windows were barred in South Africa.
I am a kiwi who has worked in many different countries and the biggest issue I see with many races is they stick to their own race in Godzone the best advice I can give is make some kiwi friends we are so chilled we will make you feel at home.
Not sure if you are reading messages here anymore, butI would appreciate you answering this one! Do you consider New Zealand small dog friendly? Where do you recommend a foreigner with a work permit begin living if they wanted to bring their dog over from the states?
A helpful video, that is honest and real about what you have found New Zealand to be like in your experience. Just as you have said, people are people and crime occurs unfortunately everywhere. New Zealand, from it's earliest foundations, has been a land peopled by migrants. The diversity found here in New Zealand's various communities, creates a rich, enjoyable tapestry. As the saying goes: A stranger is just a friend whom we have yet to meet.
You are awesome sauce! Thank you for making this! I have been having, for a lack of a better word, "impressions" about moving New Zealand, which is very odd considering it is so so far away and I know no one from there. I am absolutely terrified of not being able to find a job there, especially because cost of living is so high - I have no idea how I am going to afford it but I have faith that if it is right for me, everything will work out as it should. :) Again, thank you!
Hey !!! Thanks a thousand tons, for all the thousand words and mostly for saying>"You can go for it !!! you are strong !!!... I promise you its worth all the hardwork......." The entire thread of your videos is so amazing, interesting, practical and helpful !!! Please keep up the good work, Green wishes to "4 of you" and others involved !!! Blessing to NZ !!!
Can you mention which school Noah is at? It sounds amazing. We are looking at moving from SA to NZ and have friends in the same town as you so it is one of our towns to consider and our daughter is 3 years old at the moment and with Covid 19 it looks as though we wont get there before she's 4.5 years
You are so helpful, thank you for sharing your life @NZ....in your future vlogs, please include where you shop for things like clothes, furnitures, more food hihi, basically basic needs in NZ....if products are not available there, can you shop online? Are there any restrictions from products you order online?thank you Jen 😘
I have to commend on your vocal ability and being on point regarding every subject you pick to make a video on. Well done! My question is, giving regards to your comment on the no sponsor to migrate thing, is it possible to get a job via migrating with a tourist or visiting visa? And what are the possibilities or chances of getting a job as a person of color. And how much could the least job pay? Thanks
I'll never forget the first time I was in NZ witnessing a cop pulling someone over and then having the person get out off the car to have a chat on the side of the road. Coming from America that completely blew me away. I live in Australia now and even the Aussie cops aren't that laid back. Is that still the common practice or interaction in New Zealand?
I asked Grant and he said that it's not common practice, they will never ask the driver to get out of the car, but very often the driver will get out and approach the officer. But there isn't any serious risk.
NSW cops are the belligerent present day incarnation of the corrupt rum corps of the first convict settlement. recently a dumb cop in Queenbeyan pulled his gun on a motorist who tried to avoid an RBT. I wrote to the commissioner and complained that they spent too much time watching American TV shows and getting themselves hyped up. The coronial inquest into the Lindt cafe has exposed what a collective of bumbling plods they are. They'll never live it down, I reckon
Hey Jen, I heard from some people that in NZ you can't spend a day lying out in the garden on a nice sunny day, since you will be bitten by sandflies if you remain stationary. Is this true? It would be a pain to be in such a beautiful country but not to be able to fully enjoy it. Thanks!
Not jen, but thought i would jump in. No, that's not true. There are some beaches that have terrible sandflies, so maybe if you lived right on the beach it would be possible, but i haven't heard of it. I live in Wellington and i have never seen a sandfly here ;)
It depends on where you are and also how much the sandflies love you. They seem to adore me lol - if I sit out in my own back yard I can get a bite or two and if there are any on the beach they will find me. It's not a big deal though. I use Off spray on my feet and legs when on the beach or bush and it does the trick, or if I'm at home and not on the sand then I have a mix of coconut oil and some essential oils (eucalyptus, citronella, lavender etc) that I rub onto my feet and legs and it keeps them away. It's definitely not something that stops me from enjoying the outdoor lifestyle or that is a big bother or worry! I just see it as another step like applying sunscreen which I have to do or I burn.
Also would like to check for a single person who is rather frugal roughly what income would be comfortable enough to live in nz? I know it's impossible to give an exact figure but a rough estimate? Thanks alot
A thousand per month?! How can that be enough Haha. Also since nz has minimum wage of 15 dollars per hour I think any job can be easily above 2.5k per month?
Teo HH but that's before the pervasive taxes. and you asked "frugal". I'm an international student and I spend a thousand to 1.5k every month. Basic with no "going out". no cinema. no eating outs and stuff
How about taxes? I plan on transferring large sums of money, how are the banking systems? Also I was told that it would cost several$NZ Million for proper housing, is that in the $5M to $10M NZ range? Thanks and good luck to you and Grant.
I've literally just this minute finished filming my Moving to NZ Q&A video so I'll add your questions to the next one, but to briefly answer you here, you'll have to look up the taxes info online as I don't have that information (sorry), and if you are wanting to buy property in Auckland you will likely need over NZ$600k, depending on which area you want to buy in and what size house, but you probably won't find much for less than that. But if you look elsewhere in the country the housing costs are lower; here in south Taranaki our 3 bedroom house on half an acre cost less than NZ$180k. Hope that helps!
You can get a feel for utility rates here: www.powerswitch.org.nz/powerswitch Rates (property tax) you can see here: www.justlanded.com/english/New-Zealand/New-Zealand-Guide/Property/Property-Tax
Did the 67 000 a year figure count for 1 person or a family of 4? I mean, is it really that expensive? It really seems a lot if 5.5k a month is barely enough to go through if its a one person :\
Andreja If you are not comfortably well off or own a start up business, don’t consider living in the Auckland area. Many established business’s with their staff are completely moving out of the supercity and starting again in other, cheaper sunnier North Island centres. Hundreds of millions are being invested in smaller centres ,in earthquake proof city centres, complete new suburbs, state of the art wine vintage plants and industrial estates.Consider NZ away from your port of entry ,Auckland. Medicine ,electronics, food processing, light aviation, plant breeding, biology ,marine research, tourism, electric fence manufacture, agricultural machinery design and manufacture ,these are just some of the fields of endeavour in the hinterland. In a Hawkes Bay machine shop I was staggered at the investment in computer controlled lathes, milling machines and grinders serving the needs primarily of the wine industry.Take a look at the provinces, some that have made fortunes for investors in the past. The confounded City of Sails does not grow the Pinus Radiata, thefat lambs, the Jazz apples,or the Cabernet Sauvignon ; nor the best Kiwifruit and sub tropicals.Research.
Very good videos , very helpful. Forgive me if you already answered this question, what are the gun laws in New Zealand? Also for a younger married couple from America , how much money would you think would be minimum amount of money that would be needed to move and get set up in New Zealand? Thank you
You won't need guns here and won't be allowed to carry them. You will have to be licensed to possess firearms - rifles are straightforward but there are requirements involved for being licensed to own anything else. Most firearm owners here have rifles and use them for hunting. Owning handguns is more complicated. Hope that helps! I really couldn't estimate an amount to move over with, I'm sorry. Obviously the more the better!
I'm a student wanting to study and live permanently in NZ but I don't have any friends or family in NZ so is it hard making friends there? Also how much would you have to make per month if you'd like to live alone in a flat in Auckland for example? Love your videos, they're very helpful!
Both questions don't really have answers as it depends on so much. I'm glad you find my videos helpful. Please consider joining the Moving to NZ group, perhaps someone there can answer your questions. It's at facebook.com/groups/366961367030120/
Very informative video. Thanks. I have a bit of a peculiar question but have you ever encountered any lizards or geckos and/or frogs since you've moved to NZ, especially while working in the garden? If so, how often? Do geckos ever come into the house?
Really? I lived in the UAE for 4yrs and its super safe. Im from America and have south Africa friends too so i know aboit the crime there in south africa but UAE i could leave money everywhere sens the kids to the mall as young as even in the taxis and no problem so so safe. Have you been to the UAE is NZ safer? Because if so awesome
I always wondered which book was more important to LDS, people. The Book of Mormon. , or The Bible? also which God do you praying To? You Are very immformative.
so helpful, we would like to have more tips and information about NZ, how much the basic grocery cost, for example bread , eggs etc,, how many the gasoline, in details many thanks for you
Greetings to you and and your family . I just bumped into your channel. You guys made the right move for your kids and your grand kids. They will thank you for very much in the future. SA is getting worse by the day; 1.Destruction of infrastructure. 2Farm killings 3Burning of trucks from Durban habour. 5. People getting followed from the airport and robbed 4The population explosion of people who want everything from the govt. The continued decline of the ANC and the ascendancy of the EFF to power sums up the future.
cheers J. u r awesome, this video helped me alot make up my mind... the funny part is: my wife used to say the same thing about staying in the UK 😂 looks like it's so depressing there for everyone, brings back memories 😂😂😂
Glad it was helpful! All the best for moving forward. I think I found it particularly depressing there as I was born and raised in South Africa - you can't take a girl out of Africa and expect her to be happy with British weather!! :D
the only bad thing happened to me was a man from the UK that was on vacation in NZ he sow me wearing a T-shirt for Manchester united and he was wearing chelcey T-shirt and gave me a look of anger , but i think that doesn't count
Any job if you can get a job offer before applying to immigration - it helps you get enough points. If you already have enough points without the job offer then you can deal with it once you are here. Being on the skilled shortage list really helps. There is a long term and immediate skills shortage list.
My son has been diagnosed with extreme adhd. He is 8 and not one of those cases that people say is adhd but doesn't really need the medication. He can not function at all without the Meds. Will I be able to get his prescription filled there every month or is the medicine very limited there. That is my greatest concern.
Madam! will you kindly, please, STOP!! If you continue these tell-tale news of Godzone, more and more will flood here, then we wouldn't be such a paradise, now, would we? A belated WELCOME, of course....and hope the boys become future All Blacks with Bok blood in their veins!!
Hi Jen, I am a nurse from America (and am sad about the direction my country is going in). I am single and really would like to move to New Zealand but the prospect of doing so solo is so terrifying. Your videos have been so helpful in allowing me to think thoroughly about this decision. Two questions I haven't been able to find yet. What town do you live in now? I would like to live in a mid-size to a small-city/town that is more sunny and warmer than not. Do you have any recommendations? And two: How much is university for your boys if they decide to go? I hope to not be single forever and I want my children to have a good, reasonable priced higher education. Thank you!
We live in a tiny village in south Taranaki. What would you consider mid size to small? If you prefer sunny and warm I'd avoid the South Island. I'm sorry but I'm not sure how much university costs as we aren't at that stage yet.
My name is Gabriel, I am moving out of South Africa and planning to settle in New Zealand with my family, am a Nigerian and the hatred, xenophobic and Racism issue of South Africa is getting unbearable, children experiencing it in school, on the street, public offices like home affairs, License office, Metro police hatred on the foreigner and a lot of this issue, I made up my mind am leaving for real.
I spent the typical backpacker year in NZ and have to say: NZ people CAN be very racist. I don't mean that backpackers are looked upon badly (because I understand there are so many of them and some behave very badly) but I have tried wwoofing and how some of the hosts were talking about the Maori people was utterly disgusting. Also, the immigration policies or more precisely the asylum policies of NZ make me so angry. Still, I love NZ and the people there. Every society has "problems" :)
Applesandfries as a pakeha from nz myself, I'm not exposed to the racism, but I know that a lot of older people are racist, though on a whole I'd like to think that nz is a lot more progressive than a lot of countries however.
We lived in NZ for 10 years but unfortunately due to circumstances we had to move back to UK. And as for you not wanting to live in the UK, it depends on where you lived. NZ is not that safe as I know this from experience.
It depends more on what you want in life and your surroundings. I have been to the UK several times and know for a fact I'd never, ever, live there. But then, others think it's the best country in the world...(mainly natives though)
hi , my name is hamad , I'm a muslim 28 years old Arab man , i live in NZ for 4 years , i like to add to the point you mentioned about racism in NZ, New Zealand have a nice diversity of racis and the original ppl in NZ are Not racist or pointy or anything like that, i loved my 4 years in there and i know that the religions at all it kinds is welcomed and understanding is not an issue with the country and the ppl , + the country have a real punish for though whom do any act of racism, but its not what holding the racism in the ppl , they are just a nice ppl its not the low that make it nice , good country to start a new life good low good ppl, the only issue with NZ is its too good to be true but it is , u hear all the nice things and i don't blame anyone when he thinks thats too good to be true.
A Thousand Words Is it really that dangerous? My uncle is moving there for business reasons in a small town close to Cape Town I'm a little worried dew to the fact that I keep hearing about the country in a bad sense and I would hate him to move to a place full of crime.
Ever hear of the dog breed called the Boerboel? They had to come up with that breed to attack any criminals who try to break into the master's property. That breed was developed and created in South Africa. That's how bad it is in that country.
Nivada Stars to live there u must be cautious , for men may be it is easier than women with children as must of crimes attacking kids , i lived in cape town for seven years , i love it so much but some times it was stressful .
I loved this Q&A, thank you so much for doing it. I feel so blessed to be a born and raised kiwi girl and you have reminded me how wonderful my country is. So glad you are a fellow kiwi with us now
Me too!! Hey I need to message you about meeting up ...

Not sure if you are reading messages here anymore, butI would appreciate you answering this one! Do you consider New Zealand small dog friendly? Where do you recommend a foreigner with a work permit begin living if they wanted to bring their dog over from the states?
You should work for TV NZ I'm serious you fit the profile and presenter self very well and you're an up and coming kiwi
A helpful video, that is honest and real about what you have found New Zealand to be like in your experience. Just as you have said, people are people and crime occurs unfortunately everywhere.

My husband left his car in the driveway, unlocked with the keys in it all night once, it was still there in the morning. Christchurch.

So professional, thank youuu
We have a plan to move to newzeland. But only thing that terrifies me is volcanos and earth quakes..
Great to watch. thank you. Will you, Grant and the boys become NZ citizens one day?
Yes we will as soon as we've saved the money to do so.
Hey Jen,
I heard from some people that in NZ you can't spend a day lying out in the garden on a nice sunny day, since you will be bitten by sandflies if you remain stationary. Is this true? It would be a pain to be in such a beautiful country but not to be able to fully enjoy it. Thanks!

I see. Thank you so much for the reply; I truly appreciate it!
Hi Jen, may i ask what are the things in England that you hated such that you could not live there?
Also would like to check for a single person who is rather frugal roughly what income would be comfortable enough to live in nz? I know it's impossible to give an exact figure but a rough estimate? Thanks alot
Teo HH a thousand nz dollars should do :)
1.5k to 2k can get you more than basic I.e. "comfortable".
I bless the day i found you !
Agreed with your experience in Newzealand same with us as Muslim I feel safe with no prejudice
Are monthly utilities very expensive? Natural gas, electric, water, property taxes?
You can get a feel for utility rates here: www.powerswitch.org.nz/powerswitch
Rates (property tax) you can see here: www.justlanded.com/english/New-Zealand/New-Zealand-Guide/Property/Property-Tax
We pay around $350 per month for gas and electricity.
Hello,
Can I ask a question?
What was so horrible in the UK?
It's not that it was so horrible, it just wasn't for us. Some of the cultural aspects plus the overcrowding and bad climate.
Hi Jen, any website recommended for foreigner to find a job in NZ and employers are willing to hire with work visa?
Did the 67 000 a year figure count for 1 person or a family of 4?
I mean, is it really that expensive? It really seems a lot if 5.5k a month is barely enough to go through if its a one person :\
Our family of 4.
Thank you
Andreja If you are not comfortably well off or own a start up business, don’t consider living in the Auckland area.
Ok thank you for the information , enjoy your videos
I'm a student wanting to study and live permanently in NZ but I don't have any friends or family in NZ so is it hard making friends there? Also how much would you have to make per month if you'd like to live alone in a flat in Auckland for example? Love your videos, they're very helpful!
Both questions don't really have answers as it depends on so much. I'm glad you find my videos helpful. Please consider joining the Moving to NZ group, perhaps someone there can answer your questions. It's at facebook.com/groups/366961367030120/
Thank you very much!
thank you ♥♥♥
You're very welcome - thanks for watching.
If you don't mind my asking, at what age were your husband & yourself when you decided to leave UK for NZ?
We were aged 35 and 38 when we made the move.
Good for you god bless you
Very informative video. Thanks. I have a bit of a peculiar question but have you ever encountered any lizards or geckos and/or frogs since you've moved to NZ, especially while working in the garden? If so, how often? Do geckos ever come into the house?
Seraphi Salis are you scared of them?
Yes, I have a 'crippling' phobia...
I don't think I've ever seen any except out in the bush when we were camping, we heard frogs then.
Equally important as they both testify of Christ. We worship God the father of Jesus Christ, same as other Christians.
so helpful, we would like to have more tips and information about NZ, how much the basic grocery cost, for example bread , eggs etc,,
how many the gasoline, in details
many thanks for you
Will add that to my next video - thanks for the question.
What may I ask is the name of your youngest son's school? And in which area/suburb in Taranaki is the school?
I'd rather not share that on the internet.
No problem :)
I love your video 😀
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Is it easy to move to NZ if you hold a EU passport?
Greetings to you and and your family .
I just bumped into your channel.
You guys made the right move for your kids and your grand kids. They will thank you for very much in the future.
SA is getting worse by the day;
1.Destruction of infrastructure.
2Farm killings
3Burning of trucks from Durban habour.
5. People getting followed from the airport and robbed
4The population explosion of people who want everything from the govt.
The continued decline of the ANC and the ascendancy of the EFF to power sums up the future.
Do people homeschool in New Zealand? I live in USA and I would like to move to New Zealand.
Yes they do.
I want to live any time.
cheers J. u r awesome, this video helped me alot make up my mind...
the funny part is: my wife used to say the same thing about staying in the UK 😂 looks like it's so depressing there for everyone, brings back memories 😂😂😂
I love your accent!
Thank you :)
I am in England and I feel I need to leave so I am going to have a look at new Zealand, I am a welder fabricator, mechanic
what kind job make you qualify to immigrate to New Zealand beside the short skilled list,
Any job if you can get a job offer before applying to immigration - it helps you get enough points.
I'm sorry, I have no experience with this so I don't know the answer.
Madam! will you kindly, please, STOP!! If you continue these tell-tale news of Godzone, more and more will flood here, then we wouldn't be such a paradise, now, would we?
A belated WELCOME, of course....and hope the boys become future All Blacks with Bok blood in their veins!!
super super!
was it worth it?
Most definitely YES!
A Thousand Words thank you☺
I want to move to nz
I hope you get to, if that's what you wish.
Wow... that is almost an answer for all my questions
Thank you
You're welcome, glad it was helpful.
nice
Nelson is the sunniest place in NZ and not too cold in winter. Three National Parks and plenty of beaches.
I wish you all the best with your move.
Da imam neko imanje, sve bih prodao i otišao zauvek na Novi Zeland. Kakav raj... Svi poštuju svakog, a priroda...
Bože pomozi
iam l.d.s. too
I spent the typical backpacker year in NZ and have to say: NZ people CAN be very racist.
So true. I'm sorry you encountered racism on your travels, that's disappointing.
But then, others think it's the best country in the world...(mainly natives though)
hi , my name is hamad , I'm a muslim 28 years old Arab man , i live in NZ for 4 years , i like to add to the point you mentioned about racism in NZ, New Zealand have a nice diversity of racis and the original ppl in NZ are Not racist or pointy or anything like that, i loved my 4 years in there and i know that the religions at all it kinds is welcomed and understanding is not an issue with the country and the ppl , + the country have a real punish for though whom do any act of racism, but its not what holding the racism in the ppl , they are just a nice ppl its not the low that make it nice , good country to start a new life good low good ppl, the only issue with NZ is its too good to be true but it is , u hear all the nice things and i don't blame anyone when he thinks thats too good to be true.
bring a couple of billion dollars. We need to re build after last earthquake ha ha
South Africa sounds dangerous.
We think it is.
Nivada Strikes take it from me living here in South Africa... crime is very bad..
Nivada Stars to live there u must be cautious , for men may be it is easier than women with children as must of crimes attacking kids , i lived in cape town for seven years , i love it so much but some times it was stressful .
Poms always winge and complain!
