    Thanks you for a real review. So tired of product reviewers doing unboxing's (who cares), then just reading specs and show off the object without every showing how it really works. We can read specs and do our own comparisons. Does it work is what I want to know. If you're a 60 year old with your build, then me at 68 will be a 143 years old.

      it is kinda true tho. Age doesn't change your body composition but if you put in your weight, height and just change the age number. it will show a different results. so it is not accurate. and mostly that guy is not 15% body fat with that physique.

      @@syn7048 that's because glycogen in the skin changes over time, so it means that the electrical resistance of the skin changes over time. The device needs to compensate on age

    Understanding how these devices work, I believe:
    The Omron handle mostly measures upper body parts.
    The smart scale mostly measures lower body parts.
    Omron scale calculates both upper and lower body parts. That's why you have a higher reading here.
    Accuracy-wise, who knows what we can trust. However, Omron brand has a history of producing multiple medical devices. So, it somewhat has more credibility than many new brandings. The bottom line is that these devices grant users the awareness of their body composition measurements and encourage them to improve their physical health.

    I'm muscular and get two different readings an hour apart that adds as much as 1.5 lbs to my weight on the Omron. I did do a bodpod and a dexa two months ago and it was close. All my fat is in my middle.

      A lot of digital bathroom scales these days have removable feet (commonly marketed as 'carpet feet') on the bottom that increase the floor contact area and raise the height a little for use on carpets and uneven floors.
      New Scientist explained in 2002 why you weigh more if you use scales on carpet (and probably prompted the industry to add removable feet): www.newscientist.com/article/dn2462-people-weigh-less-on-a-hard-surface/ with Pendergast's paper/report available in full here: www.inference.org.uk/is/papers/bathroom_scales.pdf [PDF, no paywall]

    How is your "Skulpt" unit doing? After reading multiple reviews on amazon, it seems that with the latest updates, it is no longer accuratly reading your BF. So with that said, being that you should know what your BF should be and you have these machines, can you tell if its still measuring properly the Skulpt that is.

    Any instrument that claims to measure fat percentage should not require a height measurement. The height should have nothing to do with it. If it requires a height (or frame size or athletic mode) that simply means it’s putting that data into its algorithm/formula to come up with an answer. I believe the water weight test is the true measurement of fat percentage.

    • @getfitover40
      @getfitover40  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. I have an InBody Scale that reads the entire body, has foot and hand sensors and does cross body scans. It does not require anything really other than weight. It does use your age to compare you to other people that would be considered your peers. InBody makes professional gym units and mine is for home. It was about $300 but seems pretty accurate.

    Thanks for the review. I am thinking to buy this tool, so thanks for the link, it is even cheaper, than other places I was looking for. Just to add, not the vertebrae compress (remember, those are from bone, so compression would mean fracture, but the water content of the discs (located between the vertebrae) decreases. This is why the height changes. For the scale, I found it too not to place the scale over the carpet, but rather than to a flat, hard surface. Otherwise, it will show weird numbers.

    You've shown me that the Omron scale is useless. I'm 79, 5'10", 194 lbs, and a 44" waist. I do weightlifting, calisthenics and karate but still I sure don't look like you. Yet, MY Omron scale says I have similar numbers as your scale readings - WGT 194.4 (199.2), BMI 27.7 (27), Fat 17.6 (15.1) Muscle 35.8 (39.9). So, basically, any number beyond the weight is a useless number. Save your money and just buy a normal scale and get a tape measure. My house does look like yours, though. I've got exercise equipment all over the place.

      +getfitover40 Hey Michael! I just got my HBF-514C 2 hours ago. I'm 30, 175.5cm tall (5'9"?), body weight is 62kg(136.7lb), BMI 20.1, Body Fat 11.8%, Visceral Fat Level 2, Skeletal Muscle 43.7%, Resting Metabolism 1524kcal, Body Age 18.
      I'm very surprised that my muscle percentage is 43.7% because everybody says I'm very skinny.
      I think it judges your body age base on your weight, don't care about this(because you are a muscle guy) and the BMI. XD

      +Wayne Wong Thanks for your feedback Wayne, yes I agree it probably figures out your body age based on overall weight or something like that.

    Biological age may be closer than you think. There may be a trade off between performance and longevity. To build muscle requires protein. People who consume lots of protein often have elevated IGF levels which have been linked to cancer and aging. Many centurions are rail thin. Like the Indian guy who ran a marathon at the age of 101. Apparently eats like a bird.

      I do agree, you will live longer if you stay very lean and do not eat a lot or even exercise too much since even that can put a strain on the body. But what fun is that?

      I have not looked into any other scales like this from Tanita, I have used Fitbit and iHealth scales that are cloud based, they connect to your wifi network and upload your data to the cloud where you can then see it online using an Ap on your smart phone.

    This is a common problem with all smart scales. They are not considering athletes and the case of having a lot of muscles

      Unless they have an athlete mode setting in them but most do not.

    • @getfitover40
      @getfitover40  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      None of them are super accurate for body types with very low fat percentage but you will want to look for ones that have a fitness or athlete setting on them.

    you get wrong measures and higher fat % with the device in your pocket and camera i your hand, of with your cloths a nd cap and measure again and you are getting the rigt fat % like 10%

  • @Tocsin-Bang

    Can someone how explain how such a machine can measure body fat etc? There is no way this can work, if it did every doctors surgery would have one!

    • @getfitover40
      @getfitover40  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do explain in this video that it not all that accurate especially for more athletic body types so not medical grade in any way. It uses electrical current and the impedance to measure or give its best guess at your body fat percentage.

    • @watfordjc
      @watfordjc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given the scales would need to be configured before every patient used them, I imagine most doctor surgeries wouldn't want them even if they had clinical accuracy. Height is already on record, scales are in every doctor's office, and there are various formulae for estimating BF% that just need a tape measure (such as the US Navy formulae for males and females). Based on the online form used to update my records from home, my NHS GP uses height, weight, and waist circumference - probably a combination of BMI and waist:height ratio.
      The scales with the hand grips and foot contacts are the type the original studies on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) used, and as with some other types of body fat measurements (including Bod Pod) are best tracked as averages over time as a lot of variables (recent activity, hydration, sodium intake, etc.) can impact estimated lean mass levels.
      NICE have a list of journal articles involving BIA: www.evidence.nhs.uk/search?ps=50&q=Bioelectrical+impedance
