I've had the LP-8's (v.1) for more than a year; very satisfied. Listening room is 20ft x12ft x9ft w/carpet. Mounted 25" above the floor (including 2.5" of acoustic foam), 12" from the wall, they're driven by a Topping DX3 Pro Pre-amp/DAC and use the Topping's remote control. Sources are Bluetooth and a Sony BDP - S3700 disc player. When using I set each monitor's volume at 12 o'clock controlling overall volume via the Toppings remote.

Great review. Studio monitors are great for overall audio enjoyment. You save a ton of money not having to spend on an amp with powered speakers. Plus their tuning is more accurate than a lot of more expensive bookshelf speakers which might have a specific tuning.

Amazing review Joe! I believe the IN5 punches way above its price range! In fact, I’ve bought three pairs of them so far lol . The soundstage depth and mid range clarity its really good! Plus it’s one of the ONLY three way concentric bookshelf speakers for under $1000!! When I had tried the LP6 I thought they were missing something, the IN5 seems to fill that missing piece!! I’ve also tried them with Dirac full range correction and I am very impressed!

these aren't bookshelf but monitors correct? Are you using these as home theatere? I'm considering the mm6 but it only goes out to about 7.5 feet says the manual. I like the idea of having a 3 way as you mentioned I wonder if they would be better in home theatre for my side surrounds as they are closer than my front and rear.

  • @christiankansichi6622

I just got the In8 V2 for my living room. I am going to use them for my front stage and Monoprice THX Satellites for Atmos layer. KEF Q150 for rears. I am the guy who asked about using monitors for my home theater on your Daily Hifi Livestream.
At first the In8 sounded terrible no matter what I did. Then I took a day to refine the position of the speakers. Ended up closer to the wall and less toed in. They turned into a completely different speaker. The low end came alive (I was missing so much of it in the previous positions I tried), now they sound amazing!

I love that remark about Studio monitor's being too 'clinical' to some. The only downside I can see to accurate speakers is that you'll notice bad mixes more easily. But good mixes will still shine. Perhaps moreso than a speaker tuned for a home theatre.

A lot of people don't want to admit this. They WANT that veil between their ears and the sound, even if it's not "reality". And, to be completely honest, a lot of music from "the old days" sounds like absolute GARBAGE on modern monitors.

  • @trauma50disaster1
    @trauma50disaster1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

These are for 8 feet or less correct? I'm about 12 feet from the tv so I guess they would not be quite ideal for my setup? However, my side surround are very close to the seating position so I could use them in that position. Another question about speakers I don't understand...a nice passive speaker for around $400 is what I imagine these sound like. Yet the mm6 has the same category of equipment (tweeter/sub) plus an amp built in all for half the price of a traditional speaker. Am I missing something like the passive $400 is way over priced or it has some better quality? Because why did I buy an expensive avr but I don't even need the avr amp if I just buy these mm6's? Why should I buy 11 passive speakers at $400 and they don't sound as good as the mm6? What am I missing?

@joentell Have you ever tested any Monitor Audio, specifically the Bronze 100? Ive got 2 pairs of LP6, v1 and v2 and think these might be good competitors. Monitors have a larger driver but I'd guess the Monitor 100s probably still have better bass bc of the dsp and dedicated amplifiers. Most importantly, appreciate your reviews and input-keep up the great work!!

I listen a lot. Avg 4 hrs/day. The issue with powered monitors for me is, I can't help but consider them as more than a 5 year purchase, or as a disposable item. Even if the amps/power supplies lasted 10 years, the disposable aspect would haunt me. Currently, I have passive speakers and serviceable amps that will outlast me. If my kids take on what I have after I'm gone, they can get a life's worth of use from it too.

If I remember correctly the older ones would self limit themselves at high volume I think. I wish these were tested for that here. I tried the LP6 and they had for me the best base I've experienced. But there was low hum noise I could not get rid of and sent it back. I'd imagine it was due to me but at the time I just didn't go through with it. Maybe I'll try these as surround speakers, I could run a cord under the couch and power them on either side of the room I guess.

    • @justincomer2959

You really only need an interface if you are recording and need mic preamps. I use the Scarlett 8i6. It has the same performance as the 2i2 gen 3, but with more ins and outs. The conversion is decent and it is extremely reliable, but if you only need conversion to listen to audio from your computer, a dac might be a better option.

@@PaperBoat. I don't know the details, maybe it's on their website. If you asked me if I wanted a speaker that could do 24-bit, 192khz vs 16-bit, 48khz, but the former had an uneven frequency response and required passive crossover components and the losses that come along with it vs the latter with a flat response and more efficiency, I would opt for the latter. Ideally, I would want both especially if I'm using them for mixing/mastering.

    • @AmazonasBiotop
      @AmazonasBiotop ปีที่แล้ว

      I can second that.
I use a DSP on my TT!
(So I get analog -> digital -> analog)
Then in digital I can do stuff that is more BENEFICIAL SQ wise than the conversation steps might cause negatively:
      1. Do the crossover in 2v domain
      * Active filters allow independent control of level and phase(time). This is not possible with passive crossovers.
      * An active filters performance is not changed by the temperature of the drive unit voice coil as they are not directly connected to them.
      * More efficient crossovers. Active crossovers do not need to use series inductors to achieve their filter shapes.
      * More cost effective crossovers. Passive crossover networks use large, bulky and expensive components in order to deal with the high voltages from a power amplifier.
      * As the separate amplifiers in an active system are located after the crossover, they only operate over a limited bandwidth. This reduces intermodulation-distortion and, in comparison to a passive system, even a bi or tri-amped passive system, an active system will show 15 - 20dB lower intermodulation distortion.
      * An active system can very simply feature individual gain trims for the two, three or four amplifiers involved. This allows very simple fine tuning of the frequency response and the stereo matching. Similar matching in a passive system would involve the replacement of large, soldered passive components which, in practice, is difficult and time consuming for the manufacturer.
      * A power amplifier is acting on the voice coil directly and easier controlling it with its damping factor when no passive components is in-between in the pathway.
      2. I do room correction and this point is just in it self gives more SQ than the chance that we loose something in the conversions!
      3. The DSP is delaying/aligning woofer and other drivers.
      4. Implement BBC dip or Arnie Nudell dip or equal loudness curves or personal preferences courses and so on.
      5. Ability easily to use higher order crossovers 12/24/48 dB/octave and type linkwitz riley or butterworth!
That is some of the new levels of sound quality that audiophiles that think they are cool by hiding behind the word that they are "purists".
Probably "purist" is a way to motivate and convincing themselves to that they don't need to learn and invest time in measurements and adjustments for their system and room.
But don't cry when those purists are carrying components in and out components in their same lousy sounding room whole their life.
In hope that they get a different result. 🤣💞🎶🎵🎼

I love the Sonic Presence SP1. As far as I can tell it has a perfectly linear response compared to others I tried. I reckon they achieve this with DSP. The only downside to them is the noise-floor. As long as you are recording a loud enough source that should be a non issue.
I pair them with the Sennheiser HD 400 Pro which are probably the most linear sounding headphones on the market (Equal Loudness Contour @ Studio Reference Level). I did binaural recordings on both of my sound systems with the SP1 and listened back on the HD400 Pro and it captures the imaging, soundstage, and FR PERFECTLY!!!
I am confident that listening to your binaural demo recorded with the SP1 on my Sennheiser HD 400 Pro gives me a near perfect reproduction of exactly what you were hearing.

Price is a factor also, so I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that. If these were $199/pr would it be "unforgivable"? I wouldn't say so. The least expensive powered speaker I've seen with HDMI ARC is maybe the Klipsch The Fives when they're on sale for $499. The SVS Prime Wireless Pro have them, but they're $899. So do some KEF's that are also more expensive. There might be others I'm not aware of. Also, the ELAC Connex were $599.
