    I’ve also heard that Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (compression of nerves that can make you feel numb in a certain body part) is another physical version of the “Yips” by losing the mental queue as to when to the release a pitch or “forgetting” how to pitch (Rick Ankiel in particular)

    Experiencing the same as Charles for 2 years played as a single digit golfer for 30 years
    It’s very frustrating

  • @ceciliaborchardt7855
    @ceciliaborchardt7855 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There was a reason the best golf instructors couldn't fix Charles's swing. They didn't understand the cause of his problems, and I'm not sure Dr. Sutterer does either. I have suffered 35 years with the full body yips. In less than six months in the early 90's, I went from a mid-80's player to not being able to break 130. My swing disintegrated from a smooth transition at the top, to a slight hesitation at the top, to a hitch at the top (essentially, a stopping of the downswing and reloading), to a full-on stalemate in my swing between the top and last arm parallel. The stalemate was very similar to Charles's swing at the bottom -- just a little higher up. I used to think there was some performance anxiety that made this occur while playing with others, but it would happen if I played all alone without any playing partners. I could play two balls in a round by myself; on the first live ball I would exhibit the full yips, and on the second ball I'd be fine. I could spend hours on the range and not have a single yip problem (I'm sure there were problems with my swing!), and then exhibit the problem on my very first swing on the 1st tee. If I hit a practice ball first on each tee, the swing would be fine. But then my live second ball would have the yips. I came to the conclusion that the problem was caused by some bad mechanics combined with a psychological aberration in the nature of performance narcissism or or excessively high expectations of how good I could be. The irony is that my problems began the very first time I played golf after winning a long drive contest at a golf outing. My game has never been the same. Ian Baker Finch's game was never the same after he won the Open Championship, and he belongs right up there with Charles and me. There are millions of horrible golfers with terrible swings, but they don't go down the path that Charles and I went down.
    The good news is I have been able to create a better swing mechanically and have been able to minimize the yips. I say "minimize" because I sometimes feel I'm always just one shot away from square one. In fact. the better I'm playing the more likely I will exhibit a lot of stress and yip away a shot in the middle of a great round. But I'm usually able to minimize the times that happens.
    I can accept the fact that there is some dystonia involved. For my swing, I would lose all sense of strength and coiling in my swing very early in the downswing, and then I would try to regain the coil by reloading at the top. Eventually my desire not to reload was equal to the necessity of reloading to get on with the swing that I would reach a stalemate. Without having spoken to him, I can see exactly what is causing Charles's psyche to take over his swing and cause the stalemate at the bottom of his swing. If you look at his warm-up swings and his current swing, Charles has a nice hip bump and weight transfer and his kinetic sequence in his downswing is in the proper order. In his faulty swings in years past, he would not start his live downswing with a weight shift. Then he'd turn his shoulders and hips at the exact same time and at the same pace so that when he got to the bottom of his swing, he had no energy, coil or swing power left in his body. So to get that power back into his swing he would start to move back up, and then he'd tried coming down again, but he still didn't have any coil. This is what his body felt. If he continued his swing the club was destined to go straight into the ground. So to complete his swing he'd lurch his body back so that he'd have some room to swing the club through to the ball, although it wasn't really a true swing. It was more like a stab. I idea that Charles thought this was how one would swing a golf club is ridiculous. When Hank Haney was working with him to no avail, I was literally swearing at Hank.

    I'm just like Barkley. I used to be a very decent golfer, my swing was smooth and it would go straight and far. Overtime and the more I practiced I started to get worse. So bad that I went from getting mad at getting double bogey on a hole....to hoping for atleast a double. From shooting 90s to shooting 125+s.
    It really is a mental block and I can sympathize with Sir Charles because what is happening to him is what is currently happening to me. It's a horrible feeling because everyone thinks they can somehow fix our swing. But they cant access the part of our swing that really ruins it, the brain.
