If you've ever sailed on a cruise ship, you could almost count on the fact that the captain and the officers would almost always be male. It was part of the culture. But about four years ago, a new captain came on board. She's the first American woman to command a cruise ship. And she's about to make history again! Meet Captain Kate McCue.
This intelligent, serious and friendly woman became a ship captain because her father told her she could be whatever she wanted to be. THAT'S what gives a child confidence and let them realize that they can shoot for their dreams. I'd LOVE to be a ship captain, wish I had gone into the Coast Guard after highschool. I was given no encouragement, therefore had no confidence, but I love watching people like Captain Kate having amazing lives because they weren't afraid to go for it.
So true! I’ve heard stories just like this about a girl’s dreams and the encouragement of her father and it’s always so heart-warming. Like you, I didn’t get this, but it’s so touching to witness!
I'm sorry you weren't given encouragement. You can always go and get amongst it now. I have an 8 year old daughter and I honestly believe she can be anything her heart desires. I tell her constantly. You go out there and be whatever your heart chooses 🎉🎉🎉

Mary Becker Greene earned a captain's license in 1897 and worked on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers for over 50 years. She died in 1949 while working on the Delta Queen.

Captain Kate is simply a pro at what she does. I met her on The Edge, September 2019 on the cruise from Italy through Greece. On day one, she came on the speaker system and made all know she was CAPTAIN Kate, not Kate or whatever. That was lovely, along with her story from then to now. She then went to stress that The Edge was NOT A BOAT, as many addressed the ship. She is a lovely person with a lovely personality, very personable and really really knows what she is doing.
We had some bad weather coming sometime after we left Italy. Captain Kate let us know what was going on, including the rules regarding port docking. She found a way to modify the entire itinerary to make everyone happy. I thought that was masterful. It wasn’t until I got back to Rome that I realized what a masterful job she had doing. I learned that other ships which stuck with their initial itineraries got stuck at ports due to bad weather and other local port regulations. My wife and I got to chat with her on Edge - she’s state of the art Captain, and I’d sail with her anytime. I am planning a trip on Apex later this year. I am hoping the Captain is as good as Capt. Kate, man or woman. I also hope that we all just refer to her as Captain Kate, without saying she is a woman. She is just simply Captain Kate.
I love her even more hearing that she altered the itinerary in bad weather. She is one good captain

This is why it's so important to encourage young people because you never know what will be implanted in their brain. I remember once seeing a then retired world famous soccer player turn away in disgust and walked away from a young teen who was just in awe to have ran into him in a local mall and simply said, "I know who you are!". I am still disgusted by it because who knows if a short hello would have maybe encouraged that kid to play a sport. Kudos to her dad and I am very proud of this lady. Well done and "Anchors away!"

The pride is SO evident in your dad and how he speaks Very lucky to have such an amazing inspiring father ❤1 day IF i get the courage to ill try a cruise 🛳 BUT only on the Beyond when Captain Kate's at the helm! I feel like i know her thru all the videos BUT mostly its bc its SO clear how seriously she takes her job and lives in her hands BUT does it so graciously always keeping safety as number 1! Im sure there's many amazing ship Captains but shed be the 1 id cruise with if i ever get the courage!!
Doesn't matter if you're male or female and become a Captain, it's always a huge honour. Good for her.
In the late 90's I was a volunteer of the SSV Ernestina (now Ernestina/Morrisey), an 1894 90' Essex Schooner in New Bedford, MA. Captain was Amanda Madiera, 1st Mate was Jon Burt. As a Commercial Pilot, I learned more from those two than I could ever imagine (a sail functions like an airplane wing, it's cambered to provide a low pressure side and a high pressure side, the sail moves towards the low pressure. I always thought the wind just pushed the thing). Some of the best sailors and pilots I have known were women.
My wife and I had the pleasure of sailing with Captain Kate when she was on the Celebrity Summit. She is an amazing, caring, personable, professional, and lovely person. It was so nice to see her out and about on the ship. We ran into her at the 'formal' events, but more importantly, we would see her almost anywhere we went. Kate was always willing to exchange pleasantries and also have fairly lengthy conversations with passengers whenever she could. It is great to see that she has advanced to Captain the Edge. It shows her capacity to handle the rigorous demands of a top of the line ship for Celebrity.

Fantastic ship, sailed on her in Jan,2020. Of the many voyages my wife and I have done over the last 40 years, this ship was the best. This was largely due to Capt. Kate and her crew. We shall for certain, sail again. On the Edge, with Capt. Kate.
I was one of the opening crew members of Edge. It is definitely an amazing ship, full of technology in every sense. It was also the toughest but most rewarding to work at!
My lady cousin was a captain of an oil rig supply ship way back in the late 50s-60s into the 70s. Wonderful woman!

Sailed with Captain Kate on the Equinox. She was very down to earth and not stuck up like many of the male Captains I sailed with. I seen her working on the bridge from our room. She was well in charge.

She was my Captain on the Halloween 2018 Celebrity Equinox Caribbean cruise and she was absolutely amazing. Far and away the best Captain I have ever had during my 47 cruises.
He's just a good supportive dad. I bet when she graduated from naval academy he was just as proud as he is now.

I've been lucky enough to sail with her 3 times, once on the Summit and twice on the Edge. (missed her by a day on the Equinox) A lot of this film is featured on stage when she does her talk and she does bring Bug Naked out for all of us to see in person. She makes the cruise more special by being available about and around the ship.

My heart aches for every other little girl who didn’t have a father in her life telling her to reach for the stars and be anything in the world she wanted to be.
I too had a dad who told me to be anything - so I worked on a cruise ship (along with a handful of other non-traditional jobs) Nothing like the level of Capt Kate - but interesting just the same. And yes - the Bridge was all white male officers on that ship.
Dear Kate, Thank you for your amazing videos and TicToks! I too, followed my dream to work on board a cruise ship after a family cruise. I worked for Carnival and Royal Caribbean from 1987-1993. One thing I have realized , the sea and cruising never leaves your blood. I am homesick for my floating life. I cruise regularly and hope to someday try a Celebrity cruise. Your videos quench my longing for being back at sea. You have blazed the way for women in the cruise ship industry. You would have been an amazing captain to work under! Too be honest, I don't think people look at the sex of a person nowadays, you are what you, Plumber, Pilot, Doctor, Captain or Gardener, your simply judged on how you do the job.
Anyone that follows her knows she had a great sense of humor and great skill, anything one would want from a leader.

This reminds me of Star Trek’s first female lead, Captain Janeway, which was played by an actor called Kate Mulgrew.
Oh I love her character. Seriously if anyone were trying to hurt me or harm me if I were on a ship of some sort I would want her as my Captain. She would go to the ends of the Earth to make sure her crew is safe.
I watched several times and love it. It ranks up there with aircraft carriers with about 800 women aboard, including some that are pilots.

Little inside info. On cruise ships there is 2 captains and one of them are going around and chatting with guests,making pictures etc

Look back to kates first cruise. Kate knew what she wanted to be, a cruise director. Then Dad planted the seed that you could drive the ship too. Its a great story, Kate is awesome, Dad is sweet! I wish i wouldve known anything when i was young enough. I worked in a factory, 12 hrs a day for peanuts. Now im old broken and poor. Kudos to Kate and Dad and Bug!

Captain Kate sailed with her on Celebrity Summit she had jokes every evening. She mingled with us and her mom was on that sailing
We were with her on the Summit also. Unlike almost every other sea captain we've sailed with, she wasn't aloof. As you said, she seemed to be always out and about, very pleasant and accessible to the passengers.
In a world dominated by Men, Lady very well done. You would have to have worked twice as hard to achieve your goal. I have two daughters, both had to fight above their weight, but got there in the end. From a very proud Dad.
Pretty obvious where the Captain gets her support and her personality. Her father was a driving edge for this woman to succeed. Not diminishing the role of her mother of course, who's always in the center, but her father made an impression upon her in her early years, and that's what made the difference.
She sold a watch and never once mentioned who she was, that in itself explains the humility she has.
I've never been on a Cruise, but I'd love to sail on a ship that she was Captain of.
