This is the first of these abandoned building videos that hit home for me. In the 90’s, this was an absolute beehive of activity in Greenville (before Walmart and Aldi arrived). Incredible to see what it has become now.
My sister worked for giant eagle in Washington pa in my area I love it when giant eagle closes since they’re expensive. I still hope eventually they close the one at city view center I went to when I was younger since my aunt is from the Cleveland area. Especially the one at city view center isn’t safe to stay open. And if they do hopefully they find good jobs elsewhere.
I heard there was talk about it happening. If it's written in stone that it's happening, I'm VERY excited! That's a GREAT store. And I'll will do my grocery shopping there when I can't get what I need at Aldi. That's awesome.

When I was a kid, this building was a Golden Dawn. There was no pharmacy back then. After Giant Eagle took over, they added an Iggle Video inside and we rented VHS movies all the time. Then the pharmacy and drive thru were added. Eventually the video store was taken out with the downfall of video rental stores like Blockbuster. Just FYI, there were a couple more grocery stores in town the same time as the Golden Dawn. Just over in the Greenville Plaza was Riverside Market (I think that was the name) as well as Murphy’s and Jamesway department stores. Down the street towards downtown next to the current Country Fair, there was a Valu King grocery store, Leans Bakery, a laundromat, Stull’s Refrigeration and another small pharmacy. Sort of a smaller plaza. Downtown where the current Moose Club is now was once an IGA grocery store and I believe an A&P before that. This was all before Walmart and Aldi came to town. This would be in the 70’s-90’s time frame.
Used to pass through Greenville pa when I delivered parts for Shults ford. I had one customer out there. Rodgers Autobody who was nowhere near any other stop. If I got him, Grove city autobody and a shop in cranberry pa ( not cranberry twp) it was going to be a long day and I had no time for much else other then dropping parts and hauling ass to the next stop. If I got lucky I could get the route done with just enough time left to fill up the van with gas. Those days you could rack up 210 miles easy over a 6 hour route
In the back of the building that looked like a huge generator. I am surprised they left that behind. Work for a huge grocery company in Canada and they do not even have those. When the power is out its panic time for managers in store.
As someone who lived there many years ago this is sad you could do a whole series just on Greenville honestly every time I go back it’s more of a ghost town
I WANTED TO SEE YOUR CAR! You brought this on yourself... or, Well, more like I couldn't resist joking about it XD This store looks like a mess inside. Hopefully something better can come of it.
Great shoutout to the Grove City Sheetz! That Giant Eagle was pretty run down compared to the other GEs in the franchise, which I think was the final “nail in the coffin,” so to speak.
Hey wallie...did you ever go to the Covered Bridge Pizza Shop in Andover??? They built it out of half a covered bridge, and the other half was made into a pizza ship up near Ashtabula.....
I have! I love that place! I haven't been there in quite a while so idk if they're still open or not but I sure as heck enjoyed my pizza last time I was there.
@@WallieB26 The Andover location has closed. I believe the Kingsville location is still open. The Andover location would make a cool video! There was also a 3rd location in Saybrook that was an old bank turned into a restaurant. It has also been closed.
Giant Eagle definitely bought this building prior to opening this location. They didn't even have drive through pharmacies, which is a giveaway. My first job was at the Edinboro PA Giant Eagle, which closed a little while before I moved from there in Oct. '23. I also worked at the Girard Giant Eagle doing floor cleaning at night. The newest, at least that I know of, Erie County PA Giant Eagle was newly built and opened near the Millcreek Mall in Erie PA. Giant Eagle and Kroger are not the same company. The family that started Kroger, along with families of other grocery companies, created Giant Eagle. This is on a page of Giant Eagle's website. Giant Eagle also has some locations that are not corporate locations. My first job was one of them, until they later became corporate.
I remember, when I was little, my grandparents would go to the IGA (in town) and this Giant Eagle to pickup crates of lettuce that were going to expire. Both grocery stores would put the crates in the back at the docks and people would take what they wanted. The lettuce was used to feed the pigs.
Times come and and go . I worked down the road at Perkins in the early 90s . My aunt worked at the clown restaurant. We all could walk and share a ride to work .
Me and my dad use to go to that giant eagle all the time when me and my dad lived in Jamestown pa then my dad lived in Greenville pa till my dad passed away last year
I was told by an employee at the Harbor Freight store in Hermitage that they were supposed to turn this into a Harbor Freight. But that was a while back. It was supposed to be open by now. Apparently it ain’t happening.
That is correct, there was supposed to be a Harbor Freight going in there, the negotiations were with the previous owner and from my understanding it was sold while this was going on. As of now the plans are tabled. The roof there leaks horribly and needs a lot of repair
Also, whenever I was a a child that was a video store and that’s where they had the porno section LMFAO I guess I used to always rent sonic the hedgehog the OVA from there. I’m 33 years old and I’ve lived in Greenville my whole entire life.
The reason Krogers left the Pittsburgh area is because the union went on strike. The union wanted more money, and Krogers said that if the union didn't accept their final offer that they would close all of the Pittsburgh area stores.
It's a bummer that Greenville residents won't get groceries besides WalMart and Aldi. They usually drive to Hermitage at Donofrio's. I work at Donofrio's Btw.
You did a great job yet again! It sounds like Giant Eagle is a very greedy and overpriced company and that if I am every in Pa I should not Go there. The way you described them is How I feel about Fred Meyer(which is owned by kroger) They some extremely high prices, horrible sales and not very clean stores.:( I Like Albertsons Because yes they do have high prices they have great sales too and clean stores! It actually is a picture perfect day here in oregon for once(like pa, It likes to rains and rain and rain) and not stop:( We do need it though
Wallie, been watching your videos for a while now. I hear you ask many times why do small (mom and pop) businesses close. You talked about Giant Eagle closing because of lack of profits. As a small business owner, can I ask where you acquired your business degree? Running a successful business is not black and white. It isn't a simple thing like lowering costs. With products costing more, import/export costs, wages for staff, utilities cost rising, insurance, taxes and many other factors into running a business it isn't a simple answer. stores can lower costs but that would be done at a cost.
As a small business owner, I agree with you. Somebody told me that all my merchandise comes to me for free, I told them that the manufacturer gets the material for free. WallieB, if Giant Eagle is more expensive, maybe they have better service. In Florida, Publix is the expensive supermarket with Winn-Dixie being a cheaper priced store. Publix has employees that will bring the groceries to your car. Publix, you can get special requests. Publix got the best subs...We accept the prices. Publix is also a clean store. Winn-Dixie is not as clean, but better prices
Thanks for the info! I wondered what it was prior to becoming Giant Eagle. I'm familiar with Golden Dawn as there is one in Conneaut Lake, PA and another near me just outside of New Kensington.
Fascinating to see the old stores through the years and how they change.

I live here, it was surprising seeing this on my feed
Haven't seen a Giant Eagle that looks like that one. Great exploration wallie.
Wow how ambitious thanks for sharing
I love your shirt WallieB26 keep it up my guy
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY FROM DETROIT, MICHIGAN!! 7:29
I wonder if they keep actual giant eagles inside 🤔😂😳
Lol
In PA, that wouldn’t surprise me.
That’s your comment??? Wow. What a boring comment
Hm fr

Was this an old Red Foxx Foods or an IGA (Independent Groceries Alliance) before GE. This really looks like an old IGA or Red Foxx Foods.
I think this one might have been a GOLDEN DAWN.
I think it was a Red Foxx. i bought some chips there once. Grady rang me up. Aunt Esther was at the front desk.😅

Giant Eagle only has two locations in Maryland, and they're both in Frederick. There used to be one in Hagerstown, but it's long gone now!

This wasn't a greedy corporate store, it was a locally owned franchise.

Before Giant Eagle it was Golden Dawn, it was an independent store until 2000
My mistake, we were indepeñdent until corporate took over in 2018

Sparkle is the Jernigan version of giant eagle I use to work for one
I remember when that place was open
Good ol' Snap On. The rent to own tool truck...
That's what the problem is now the prices are high because of greed
