    Lesson 54 - In the Kitchen - Learn English with Jennifer
    I suggest that the beginners in the viewers see this excellent video on prepositions in adverbs of location. Even the advanced ones among them will enjoy the exposition in its simplicity and spontaneity.
    Maybe other works on adverbs of time and manner and their prepositions could be added in the series planned.
    Good luck and great work, Jennifer; a service to the lingua franca called English.

    Great lesson, dear teacher. You're right: prepositions are a hard topic for English learners. Thanks.

  • @stunninglad1
    @stunninglad1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's important to note that a prepositional phrase like, 'For the best results, we, along with everyone else. must study hard,' can also have a paticipial phrase in the sentence (along with everone else). This is itself a prepositional phrase. We can say we have interjected a particicipial phrase into the sentence to give more information. A participial phrase acts like the adjective to the noun/pronoun/proper noun in the sentence. The correct use of commas in prepositional phrases is also important:' In the cinema on the north end of town, we watched one of the best films ever made.' However, writing this way (with the prepositional phrase at the end of the sentence) requires no comma: 'We watched one of the best films ever made in that cinema on the north end of town.' It works the same when you know the name of the cinema; 'At the Odeon, we watched one of the best fims we've ever seen.' No comma required when we do this: 'We watched one of the best films we've ever seen at the Odeon...Hopefully Jennifer will correct me if I've made any mistakes in my theorising.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, punctuation matters. I helps readers digest our written thoughts more easily. Commas especially break up larger thoughts. In general, yes, we separate introductory words and phrases with a comma. You gave helpful examples. :)

    UPDATE: December 2022
    I've since modified my understanding and explanation of indirect objects, especially in the SVOO sentence type. I no longer believe it's accurate to call objects of prepositions indirect objects. Prepositions always have object, but it's best to simply call them "objects of prepositions."
    I've considered whether or not a prepositional phrase can actually be called the indirect object in SVOO (example: I showed my work to the teacher). It would be more accurate to simply consider the entire prepositional phrase as the second object without naming it the "indirect object." See my new lesson ditransitive verbs. Like you, I'm on an ongoing journey of learning! Thank you for allowing me to guide you and share my understanding as I continually aim to improve and refine it.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrea Giraldo Hi Andrea. I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. We do try to limit the number of prepositional phrases in a single sentence, but place and time are a common combination. It's okay to have two prepositional phrases together like that. Consider another example: Will you come with me to the store? (with...to...)

    "Hi, Jennifer. Thank you for your lessons. They clear to take me understanding. However, I confusingly know about the object in sentences. I sometime see the indirect as noun, gerund or sentence. I don't know how to use." This is my comment that I posted here 6 days ago. You didn't see that. I hope it could show you. Thank you for your mind.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nuanprang Chaitakhob Hello! I see both copies of your question now. :) Remember that objects can be anything that acts like a noun:
      1. I'd like to know [the answer]. = The direct object is a noun.
      2. I'd like to know more about [it]. = The indirect object is a pronoun.
      3. I'd like to know more about [forming sentences]. = The direct object is a gerund phrase.
      4. I'd like to know [who that was]. = The direct object is a noun clause/an embedded question.
      To make sense of a sentence, identify the main subject (I) and main verb (would like). Sentences basically follow the same patterns. Here are common ones:
      subject + verb (I know.)
      subject + verb + object (I know the answer.)
      subject + verb + object + prepositional phrase (I know the answer to the question.)
      Hope that helps.

    This must be a while since you posted this video, and I don't know if you would read my comment or not. But I have to say that what you've done is amazing. I watched this video twice before but now I watch it again because I'm having a test on preposition tomorrow. You are the best teacher who help us a lot to learn grammar. ❤

    Sentence : Ovens are for cooking food
    I am trying to understand the role of different words in the above sentence. Please correct me if I am wrong in any of the below. I am most unsure about point 5. and 6. below.
    1. Ovens: Noun: Subject
    2. Are: Linking Verb
    3. for cooking food: Prepositional Phrase: Subject Complement: Adjectival Phrase
    4. for: preposition of purpose
    5. cooking: gerund :object of the preposition
    6. food: object complement for the object = cooking

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That looks pretty good!
      I've been creating a short series of videos on complements for members. (Super Members and higher get access to a weekly bonus video.) th-cam.com/play/PLfQSN9FlyB6Q9KcdNzhIsJBnkYq7Z4REy.html
      I included a prepositional phrase as an example of a subject complement, but in the comments/video description, I admit that there's disagreement between sources when it comes to identifying such phrases as subject complements or obligatory adverbials. In the end, I don't think it matters too much. The point is that prepositional phrases can follow a linking verb. Perhaps if they express location or time, more people would recognize that adverbials. However, in your example, "for cooking food" is indeed like an adjective, describing the use of ovens.

      @ankurseth6739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Englishwithjennifer You are always so helpful and so awesome! Wish you long and happy life!
      My logic was that after a linking verb, there has to be a subject complement and that a subject complement needs to have an adjective or a noun like properties. So by that logic, "for cooking food" had to be an Adjectival phrase. An obligatory adverbial is a new term for me.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes terminology confuses me, too, and that's when I think it's time to put it aside and just focus on the patterns themselves, regardless of the labels.

    Sentence: Two years after learning to walk, John finally learned how to talk.
    In the above sentence - the phrase("Two years after learning to walk") looks like a noun phrase but behaves like an adverbial prepositional phrase of timing. What do you think it is - noun phrase or prepositional phrase?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two years later/ Two years after that/ Two years after learning to walk >> I see them all as adverbials. They answer the question when?

    A riving flows between its banks. Kindly tell the part of speech of the word between in the sentence. Well my guess is, it's preposition.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A river flows between the banks.
      BETWEEN > preposition
      "Between the banks" is the prepositional phrase and it expresses direction. This phrase modifies "flows," so it's like an adverb.

    Hi ! Should we use comma between two prepositional phrases at front ? Or it should we do it in every case front, middle & last?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's an introductory phrase, we usually set it off with a comma.
      With determination and faith, you can accomplish almost anything.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely because the same exact preposition was used. "With" repeats, and the author wanted to create some separation. That's his/her style. I'd write it differently. I'd likely use "and."
