sampan - original song with Jon

a true story that happened to my mother when she was a little girl.
recorded with the splendid Jon Duncan at Bruny Island, Tasmania in 2019.
Sampan is a flat-bottomed boat.

My grandpa said to my mama :
(in Teochew)
"Let's go and visit your grandma's tomb tomorrow"
My grandma was buried in a place somewhere across the sea.
So my grandpa said to my mama:
(in Teochew)
"Don't stay up too late tonight. We will wake up at 7Am tomorrow and we will take your uncle's..
Sampan(x4)"
My mama wasn't good with the sea.
The waters always made her sick.
The waves that day were really rough
For such a flat bottom watercraft
Sampan (x4)
They landed on the opposite shore
Grandpa tied the boat to a tree
By now mama was so sick
Her head was spinning like a washing machine

They finally found great granny's tomb
Cleaned it and gave her the offerings
They sat by her for 20 minutes
Then started back towards to sea

My mama was still sick and vomiting
She had no choice but to endure
Such was the thing you did for your family
When they are here and when they are gone
