  • I'm currently reviewing the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Mercedes have fitted it with a safety feature that's designed to help you in an emergency. Obviously I drive with the up most care and abide by every precaution to ensure maximum safety. However, when reviewing a car speed is sometimes a necessity and I've found out something rather interesting about this new E-Class involving the firm's emergency services hotline, speed and a big hill...

    I see SOS is as crap as it has always been. The one time I had to use it years ago when I had a flat tire on the side of the road no one showed up after an hour and I had to call a local tow truck service.

    • @russcattell955i
      @russcattell955i 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could you not put the spare on ? Or did you buy a car without a spare wheel & jack ! Those repair outfit's will not do when you tear a hole in a tyre, or worse. Friends of ours have a BMW Mini with run flats, on route to a ferry port they got a flat, did not notice for miles, until stopping for fuel, discovering a shredded tyre & no replacement in the local tyre shops, needless to say, they missed their ferry, had to wait a day for a new tyre & pay for another ferry ticket.

    You need to consider more Mat. There are times when lets say a driver has a heart attack or something else. In that moment, the accelerator can get pressed really hard and the car can go speeding. The system will be designed to assume that a driver would see such a crest and slow down. Thus, as the driver did not slow down, it can now assume the worst. Even though he may have gone slower afterwards, the foot of the driver who may have had a heart attack may now have moved or slipped off the accelerator. It can therefore still assume there is an issue with the driver and thus ring emergency services. No one is really going to drive like that over a crest. In any case, if the situation arises where someone is driving like that (which you shouldn't) the call can easily be cancelled by the driver thus signalling the driver is okay and was just fooling around.

    when i went back to the car after 15 / 20 mins operator was still on call hoping for me to answer

    Try drifting the W213 E-class... When you get a good angle it thinks you're about to crash so it will play whitenoise in the speakers at volume 11 and pull the front seat belts REALLY hard :o
    The belts (and noise) won't let up until you've recovered the slide (or crashed) so the belts gets pretty painful.. And your ears ring.
    To avoid it, put the car in dyno-mode. It will then be without TC, ESP, ABS, ASR?, and probably other acronyms as well. Oh and you loose power steering. But you'll slide like a hero 😏

      Jamie B well there are a lot of factors that could be the initial cause of loss of control of a vehicle or a crash in general. There are plenty people who are lucky enough not to have endured such a thing and I sincerely hope you will be lucky enough as well but please think of the poster. You don't know it happened, he might have exceeded the speed limit, maybe he was hit or it might have happened because of something else. To be a little bit more compassionate by not instantly judging a person from a lack of understanding might be of service.

    • @StephenButlerOne
      @StephenButlerOne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** that's what you would think, but by the sound of the call centre person, she didn't have any info regarding it wad a car calling her. At what point does the car tell her, "I'm a car calling, I think my humans dead, please come to xyz".

    • @StephenButlerOne
      @StephenButlerOne 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I'm not so sure about this instance. That sounded a very clueless lady.
      With this being a GSM call, they don't typically (form a mobile) get GPS info with a call, that's why they say call from a landline ad they can get the location based of the number records, this they can't do from GSM calls. In theory they could go certain area, but prosission is all dependant on the density of the population and cell towers. So the emergency services have dismissed this as a way of personal location
      So if the lady had gotten the GPS Co ords, through with the call, when Matt says, the car call you, I'd expect t her to say, oh...that explains it or words to that effect, but she didn't seem to grasp the concept of a car calling her, and was the normal dismissive tone you get from the device when you call by mistake.
      Having this tone, doent align with a lady that has just gotten an extra bit of info (gps) that they wouldn't normally.
      You would think, she would replay "tech hay, can you cancel the call of shout i", she was dismissive and blank. I don't think she had any GPS Co ords.

    To all who say the call took too long, I wonder - really? What would change extra minute? You think they will send helicopter for you?

      What if you're alone? On a country road without much traffic and you simply lost control and crashed and no one is around?

      If no one responds to the call then they will send emergency services to the location of the crash.

      Jamie B That's right, the way it works is if the driver is badly hurt and doesn't respond within a minute or so they will automatically send an ambulance using the car 's GPS location

    Great wasting emergency services time, when this assistance could be for someone in a real accident. That's was funny? Your employer should have words.

    German make good car, but the sensor system is awful.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to consider more. It can therefore still assume there is an issue with the driver. No one is really going to drive like that over a crest. In any case, if the situation arises where someone is driving like that (which you shouldn't) the call can easily be cancelled by the driver thus signalling the driver is okay and was just fooling around.
