8% pre-tax to my pension, 10% pre-tax to my 403b - I never even see that money! Post-tax I do 10% to my roth IRA and another 10% to emergency savings. By the time I get to my guilt free money, believe me girl I am GUILT, FREE to spend that bag 😂 I just love your content, especially the critical and ethical lens you apply to social media trends. It just hits right in a world gone wrong.

Invest in your future, but make a living will/trust in case you suddenly die so the government doesn't just get all your hard earned savings. Have secret beneficiaries, maybe a lot of them so the pile/estate is spread out.

The car comments in the video are so spot on. I decided to trade a car in for one that was better suited for that time in my life. I was financing it (with the goal to pay off early, which I did) so they ran a credit check. The salesman said to my husband at one point "wow, she could buy any car on the lot". Yeah, I could. But that would just have been stupid. A car is a means to an end, transportation, that's all. The $30,000 or under car is going to do the same task that the $60,000 or more car does. Quit using it to flex. You're being stupid if you use your car for status. No one cares.

As someone who is nearing a somewhat early retirement, I cannot stress it enough. Please please please start saving even the smallest amount towards retiring!!!!!! That money, no matter how small, grows with time. The more time, the more massive it grows. So please please please live a bit below your means if possible. Make it a habit to put even a few dollars aside in savings. Don't touch it. I am a type of tired I can never explain. But when you get here, you know it. You feel it.

I’m building wealth, so I can go about my days without worrying about the next bill coming out of my account, or if I’ll be able to afford my medication next month, and to retire at a reasonable age, not have to keep working well into my 70s like many others in this country!

  • @Pajali
    @Pajali 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +20

The person asking the question is missing the point imo. For me, the point of building wealth is to have the peace of mind that I have money for what I need and then some. It’s not about being anti-consumption or anti-consumerism; it’s about not having to stress about overdrafting or hitting your credit limit. It’s about being able to grab a few things that weren’t on your shopping list without having to cut back somewhere else. Being frugal and financially savvy can absolutely fit into an anti-consumption lifestyle, but they aren’t intrinsically linked.

My biggest weakness is Amazon, so I went ahead and put Prime on hold and haven’t made a single purchase since. I’m actually trying to eliminate most if not all online shopping because I find it too easy to overspend versus getting up, getting dressed, and going into a brick and mortar building. I’ve also scheduled a meeting with a financial planner to supplement and buffer my already existing retirement fund.

Nah for real, this this the biggest thing with me, when you said “I don’t want to have to figure it out at 40” it hit me deep because that’s exactly how I think. I am not gonna be 40 years old and I have to legitimately worry about money. A lot of people I know at my age are always on vacations and always eating out at restaurants all the time and that’s not what I’m doing. I have a good job now that treats me right and pays me decently, so instead of doing all that stuff all the time, I invest in my future. At this point, no I’m not rich or nothing yet, but one thing I do know is I can live life somewhat carefree with a lot of stress off my shoulders because I know if any emergency happens to me, I can pay for it without even thinking about going into debt for it, literally whatever happens to me

Spending mindlessly for the dopamine hit is pointless but I get why people do it when we know to retire in the traditional sense takes saving a huge chunk each month and it mean we sacrifice today. We are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. My plan is to work on my passion projects and build a creative side business and then work my 9-5 part time. I won’t be able to retire til 75 by the looks of things , so id rather work part time for ever than full time now and save everything in the hope I am blessed to experience those older years with good health. I wanna travel and work on my passions. I knew and know of too many people who were sick at 60 and passed away by 70… it’s made me look at things differently , I’m not prioritising too far in the future and sacrifice my present ❤

I love your channel and you make me improve my mindset. Buying a car nowadays is like having an adopted child because you pay for the day you trying to adopt a child , insurance, maintenance ,feeding fuel, hygiene ,transportation (road tax) , parking , and the life cycle is pretty short …. The new way is the lease car. The company pays for all of those and you pay monthly cost basically child support with a renewal new one no bad attitude as backlash 😂😂😂

I think people feel intimidated or discouraged to begin their wealth building journey because a lot of the financial content online rarely specifies that "building wealth" and "spending comfortably" are going to look completely different to different people. My idea of building wealth and spending comfortably is the completely different to my best friend's idea of those things, so the approaches and dollar amounts we need to take to get there are going to look different. I think there needs to be more conversations like this around the idea that these things are deeply individual and everyone's end goal will look different, so you need to think about what your end goal looks like so you can start working towards it. But when a lot of financial content talks about "being behind" in retirement if you didnt start until 30 and needing millions of dollars to *maybe* retire by 65, it can be easy to decide "I'll never be able to retire, so why bother?" It's not a correct way of thinking, but I can understand the self-fulfilling aspect of it.

The guy sort of have a point, but only for wealth beyond a certain level.
Building wealth up to the point of being able to afford the necessity for the rest of your life without working is not consumerism.
But for amount beyond that, it is kind of a choice of consumerism now or consumerism later.
Vast majority of Americans have not clear the benchmark for the latter though.

Time that you have to work for money or work to fix whatever situation you've put yourself in. I'd rather spend the least amount of time possible to work on myself so i can have the most amount of time enjoying my life!

I don't want to be a burden on my family. but I also want to have a rich retirement where I travel & have a nice home! so now, it's a requirement to have a low time preference and put money away. I'm also in the investment management industry, so it would be bad to talk the talk and not walk the walk lol.

I don't work to spend comfortably. I work to LIVE comfortably. To not have anxiety about not meeting my needs or reaching my goals.
If you have to spend to feel comfortable that is a problem. You are using spending as a coping mechanism. And it will only lead to more anxiety down the line.

It compensates for the things I don't need, even though I did buy 2 pair of high-street cargo pants at Nordstrom for $550. Just know, I don't over spend. I can pay for these cargo pants in full once I receive the bill.

  • @Magicwithizz

I get this I do. But this idea that we have to constantly work to build wealth just so we can *maybe* one day have some freedom with our lives isn’t an issue of personal willpower. This is an unfettered capitalism problem. The issue is our governments abandoning all social programs. I get that we feel like we can’t do anything about that so we have to play the game to secure ourselves and fuck everyone else. But I believe that preaching wealth building HAS to come with a consistent and harsh critique of the systems we live under and the objective barriers that a lot of people (especially disabled people) face towards even getting a chance to do this wealth building.

I will probably have to work when I am 60 and retire when I am 70. I came to the US from a 3rd world country and just recently started making better money, before it was just enough to buy food and rent. Now I am doing 401k and savings, I am almost 40. Also just now had my baby. I wanted to be a mom forever but it happened now. I am an accountant and going to work for the Govt so I could potentially retire one day. I don't travel and my car is old AF.
