    I love how KSP takes more computing power to run then the entire Apollo space program

    • @multiapples6215
      @multiapples6215 6 ปีที่แล้ว +217

      IKR? But hey, their computers only need to control and keep track of things
      meanwhile Ksp needs to do all that as well as render graphics and simulate physics

      The facebook app on your phone take more computing power than Apollo did..
      computer tech back then was incredibly simple and limited compared to today's computers.

      @leeterthanyou 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      It didn't have this stupid bent on for building "human-friendly" interfaces. Back in the Apollo era, you had to understand memory register addresses and how a computer works at its core (get it? core wire memory modules?) in order to provide any input. No circuit or subroutine was used for providing a fancy UI... No real controls aside from mission-imperative instructions... These computers were remarkable in their own respect for their simplicity and robust rigidity, flying in the face of technical challenges of the day (humans had never flown past the VARBs, so all we had to go on for systems design notes were what we were able to beam back via telemetry gathered on the first few unmanned lunar probes). It is just insane to think that concepts like the glass cockpit of the STS era were leaps beyond the original Apollo guidance and flight computers -- and fast-forwarding to the CrewDragon/Dragon2 control interfaces being touch-screen... I love Gordon Moore.

    I am SO glad I'm not the only full grown space nerd on this planet. I actually live really close to the launch site of one of America's first pre-NASA missions. Manhigh ll was launched from an open pit mine in Crosby, MN in August 1957. My husband thought I was crazy when we had to drive through Crosby and I begged to go look for where the site might be. Of course we didn't. But it is so exciting to me that I can look at a place near by and say "This is it! This is where we actually started looking for ways to get people into space!" The men that flew in project manhigh never left the stratosphere, but they paved the way to get higher. I look forward to more videos from you. My daughter and I enjoy watching them together.

Sometimes it feels like there has happened so much, in such a short time, that it is kind of vague and overwhelming. Very cool learning about you and how Everyday Astronaut came to be. Running out of oxygen is bad news. I lost two friends some years back. They went down to get preserves from the cellar, which did not have any kind of ventilation. Some rotting vegetables consumed all of the oxygen and the entire space was mostly carbon dioxide. When I was doing construction I almost died from a heater using up the oxygen. I was in a hoarded in basement digging trenches, -40 outside so everything was as sealed as possible. At some point I became confused and I noticed I was breathing but going under and the flame to the heater went out. I barely made it up the stairs to breathe fresh air.

    So i ran into a video of yours yesterday while we were waiting for the (sadly) no-go for the dragon module demo-2 launch. So yeah, i am 11 videos in now and started wondering who you are and how you rolled into this. As a result this is probably my favorite video till date that is on the channel (only have a ton more to watch, we'll see in a year).
    What i liked about this video and why (for now) it is my favorite; You explain how you got here, how you were and still are this normal guy that loves space and that knows how to handle a camera.
    On top of that you have a sense of humor and you are good as a speaker on stage (and in the videos, i wondered where you got that skill)
    Keep it up (i know this vid is 2+ years old and you will probably not see the comment).

    Last night, I watched parts of your coverage of the launch of the Demo 2 mission, and wondered to myself how you got to be where you are in this business today. This video answered a good deal that question. I am between careers right now, but I do some science and astronomy education for our local planetarium. NASA is always looking for outreach people, like for instance, their "Solar System Ambassadors" program, and I frequently run into NASA folks in my astronomy endeavors. I've been a space buff since the Apollo days. Perhaps there is a (paying) future for me in this kind of education. Thanks for the inspiration!

    I think this is even better that he gets to actually go to space now. Not only did his career path change to science communication. But it got bumped up to PHD level doing science communication in space. Yeah nasa and the rest are down grading the crew if they don’t do any work then they aren’t considered astronauts but we all know in our hearts. It’s still exclusive enough to keep that title. Many of the modern astronauts aren’t qualified pilots or commanders yet they keep the title. Hopefully the mission command of this group are smart enough to train them to “operate” the space craft and do a project in space as a crew. This will meet the requirements to be officially labeled an astronaut.

    Great talk. Space is not for space scientists only, just like an airline is not for pilots only. Keep up the good work.

    I also got stuck in my old Soviet era spacesuit. I jumped into mine as soon as it arrived -- and just before a meeting online. It was too small for me and I almost couldn't get out of it once I was in it. I very nearly had to do the meeting in a spacesuit. I put the helmet on once and got such a bad case of claustrophobia that I never tried it again.

    Hi Tim! I had no idea you were a photographer in your former life. As a fellow photographer, I love the shots you showed in this video. Do you have a web site or some place online where we can see more of your work? Maybe of former clients as well? I'd love to see them.
    I suppose I could look you up on Instagram... 😊

    Great symbolism in the apollo 13 picture. Surprised no-one has mentioned that it's wrong though. April 20 is the last day of aries, with taurus following it. Also, apollo 13 was safely back by the 17th, so it all took place in aries.

      I misspoke the date and I believe the astrological calendar has changed...

    • @tnexus13
      @tnexus13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough about the date, easy done.
      However, nothing I can find about the zodiac suggests a change in recent memory. Yes, there's an inevitable procession of the stars, but that's a slow process as I'm sure you know.
      There does seem to be 'fake news' that pops up every so often about how 'NASA has changed the zodiac'. It's just that though, fake.
      The reason it stood out to me is that I was born only a decade after apollo 13, in April, and have always been told that I am Aries. Got to represent my star sign, yo!

    Brilliant absolutely loved this.. I used to be well into photography and putting captions to them was one of my favourite parts.. but compared to yours I sucked lol.. another passion of mine was and still is space exploration..at the age of 7 seeing Armstrong step onto the moon making a giant leap for mankind was the touch paper of my love of rockets 🚀 and Space travel..
    I've been following your TH-cam channel for only a few weeks but already each day I look forward to seeing your content.. Thanks for all of your time and energy.. keep up the great work.. 👍
    P.s everything crossed for today's launch of SpaceX SN11 having a perfect sub orbital flight and a perfect landing.. 🚀👨‍🚀

    My sister lives in Waterloo, IA right now! I am in Algona, IA, Kosuth County, the largest town in the largest county in Iowa. We are 60 miles from the border of Minnesota and about 1 hour from the nearest walmart. No I am not joking or making any of this up. Just remember, in a shakespeare festival in Iowa, never shout "lend me your ear!" unless you plan on being pelted with corn. Also, the biggest towns and cities in Iowa are in the middle third of Iowa, whether east or west, the more touristy places are in the lower third and des moinse, and Souix City did not get the first memo.

    I owned a helmet exactly like that AND the inner G-suit that went with it. The g-suit was grey and draped in airhoses, that were inside little fabric loops. When they were inflated, the suit would tighten up. The helmet had a nasty triangular hole in the top. Did not look good for whomever wore it when that was made. I was told it was a MIG25 suit, but it was clear it was not the whole thing. Collar was on the helmet.
