My husband and I arrived in France in 2017 on a 2 year work contrat for him-I tagged along-and we never went back. We now own our own business and will will going for citizenship soon. We love this area of France-we are about 30 km away from you.
My husband and I discovered your channel about a month ago, and we absolutely love your content. We are US Americans who retired to Portugal in 2019, and our only regret is not doing it sooner. Our dream home is our Peugeot Boxer van that we refitted and now live in full time. We love France and are actually driving through again next month. Such beauty never gets old! Your home is beautiful, and I wish for you many happy years! Btw...most homes in portugal have a bidet too!
Some elements to understand the cuisines of this era. There is no counter or work surface because everything was done on the table, preparing the poultry, sorting the vegetables, peeling the potatoes. It was often a family activity, the wife, the children, the husband, everyone had their task to carry out. As some of these tasks took a long time to complete, it was better to be seated. Another more social reason was that, sometimes, when we received close friends or family, it was an opportunity to share a discussion while preparing the meal, with a small glass of wine or an aperitif. I can no longer count the number of endless discussions I had with my grandmother while shelling peas.
How I grew up in rural New Mexico USA. I also have memories of shelling peas with family. We would pick them from our garden or a farm, then sit in a circle on the back porch and shell peas while telling stories and learning from our elders.
Yes, in old house, everything is prepared on the table (equivalent to what you call an island). For appliances, an home is always sold without previous owner belongings which is just for sanitary reasons. You don't know if they frequently cleaned appliances 😂😂😂. In nowadays, it's more common having a true built-in kitchen where in France, a lot of suppliers exist.
From a Canadian living in Paris, France, and recently purchased a house about 4 km from Paris. I can understand your excitement, but I’ve been here a long time so I’m a little bit jaded, but your experience is contagious and it reminds me of how happy I am to be here. I did live in New York in Los Angeles years ago and I must say that there is a rather startling contrast.😇
The bottle you found says "Framboise" which is raspberry. They distill alcohol with all sorts of fruits, including pears which is my favorite. Beware! It's very strong!! In the country side in France, we drink it in the middle of a big meal. We call it: Le Trou Normand. The Normandy Hole! It's intended to incinerate the food you just ate, so you can eat some more!
Le Trou Normand is traditionally Calvados, which is apple brandy (eau-de-vie), quite strong (40%+ of alcohol). In southern France, poire William is a good substitute 😊 Enjoy!
For people I've never met, I'm ridiculously happy for you! This is my dream and you make me feel that I can do it too. It's a lovely house and you've chosen a great location. Congratulations and happy renovating!
@@coraline8046 On avait les mêmes à la maison dans les années '70...en Suisse...on met de l'eau qui s'évapore avec la chaleur du radiateur. Beaucoup moin chèr que les humidificateurs qu'on achète maintenant...
We had exactly the same system ceramic containers hanging on our radiators in Czechoslovakia in the 70's and 80's. I remember my father pouring water into them when I was a child in the freezing winter months when the heating was at full throttle, so that the air in the room wasn't so dry... Even though these types of old radiators are still to be seen in many houses I don't think they make these containers for them anymore. You should preserve those, it's a dying thing of the past.
@@pedrito1963I remember them, they were everywhere in the 1960s and 1970s here in Austria as well. Due to the cold weather up to 8 months per year in those times. All gone now, of course ...😅
Congratulations for the house ! As a french it makes me happy and proud to see you enjoying our country. And also it’s a great reminder of all those little things we’re lucky about here and that we forget because we’re so used to it. So thank you ❤
This property and the accompanying land is absolutely incredible. All for less than €200,000 too...A dream for many to renovate somewhere like this. It's just lovely. So much character and quite obviously steeped in French history 👌
Bonjour, votre Maison est magnifique. Je suits Francaise et vie aux Etats-Unis depuis plus de 30 ans, mais je me prepare a revenir pour de bon en Fance, a Bordeaux. The little sink closet in the guest room, reminds me of my Grandparents's house in the south of France. My grandmother had one a closet sink in their bedroom. She would do her morning freshing up there. I love your house, it reminds me of my childhood. Just beautiful!
You seem like gracious and elegant people. Congratulations on finding this unique spot. I suspect given what's going on in the US right now, your channel is going to get a lot more subscribers!
Superbe vidéo ! Je vis en Thailande , après avoir visionné cette vidéo , mon pays me manque tellement ! Congratulations ! I'm happy for you , I wish you the best in my country !
For those who don't know, taken from Wikipedia: Jane Mallory Birkin OBE (/ˈbɜːrkɪn/; 14 December 1946 - 16 July 2023) was a British-French actress and singer. She had a prolific career as an actress, mostly in French cinema. A native of London, Birkin began her career as an actress, appearing in minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup (1966), and Kaleidoscope (1966). In 1968, she met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring with him in Slogan, which marked the beginning of a years-long working and personal relationship.[1] The duo released a debut album, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg, in 1969, and Birkin appeared in the film Je t'aime moi non plus in 1976 under Gainsbourg's direction. etc. etc.
For god sake please get rid of every pieces of cement (beton portland) especially the one covering the façade the oustide of each of your walls. Cement causes moisture en every place in your house. I mean extreme moisture . You will replace it by "chaux hydraulique" (ask your neighbourgs) mixed with sand. Ask me for more.
I can confirm this!! Me and some friends stayed for a week in a rental gîte near Angoulême last summer, and while it was "technically" cooler in the house, it didn't feel like it because it was like 74% humidity in the home when outside it was maybe 30% (the temp outside was about 37C, inside was maybe 29C), the ventilation in the rental was horrible, none of the windows had the vents at the top. I was the only foreigner with all French people, I wanted to keep the volets down in the gîte but open all the windows to get the humidity out, I didn't care about the heat, humidity is way worse in my opinion, but the French people with me were more concerned about the heat, anyways, whatever. But what I noticed was that most renovation on the building were done with concrete/cement, I don't know much, but adobe homes are common where I'm from, west coast of the US, and concrete doesn't breathe, so this gîte was a double whammy of no ventilation, lol
@@aeolia80yes, unfortunately a lot of renovation back in the day didn’t bother about using cement on old building. Now it’s common knowledge but lot of house have these issue.
Thanks for the video! And congratulations for your purchase! What I can see in your videos is that you're getting more and more relieved and fullfilled, which makes me really happy for you. As a Frenchmen, we can be sometimes grumpy but we forget to be grateful to live in such an incredible country despite our moronic government. I wish you all the best
Congratulations on your new Eymet house! I just commented on an earlier video - I have those radiators in my house - I love them too! My house dates back about 500 years, with big thick stone walls too. I lack the formality of your layout and don't have as much property - but am so grateful for a back grotto with a fountain and a large (esp for a village house!) yard offering a breathtaking view of the village. We are so very fortunate! Very happy for you and appreciating your videos.
Married to a French guy and live in Houston. Have spent many summers in France during the past 2 decades while raising my kids around the world in a mixed culture household. Great adventure you guys are living!!! Your home is beautiful as it is, many foreigners go to France and want to make their homes look like the French catalog for tourists,. Every region in France has it's charm and originality, cement homes are also part of the French architecture, love the layout of your house. Good luck from Texas. France is a beautiful place ❤
The region is amazing, I visited there just under a year ago because I had never been and I was amazed by the nature, climate and local culture! Great job on finding a home with both land and character in such a nice location, close to town. Much better than a maison pavillonaire, those monotonous homes on tiny lots, similar to those in Sun Belt suburbs. You found something better with a lot of potential!
Great house! I may be wrong but I think you have an olive tree in your garden... Am I right? If you do, collect them when they're ripe (= black) some time at the end of automn (it depends on the variety). Put them in a very big salad bowl with 100g of salt for every kg of olives. Keep them in the kitchen and give them a stir any time you pass by (they will release some juice). About a week or two later, taste a few olives to see if they've lost their bitterness. Then, rinse them several times in a lot of water, drain them and let them dry thoroughly: they must be completely dry or else they will turn mouldy. Then put them into jars with a bay leaf and a twig of thyme in each jar and fill the jars with ordinary vegetable oil (no olive oil!) such as rape-seed, corn or sunflower oil. Put the lids on. They will keep perfectly in one of your beautiful 'armoires" for apéritif or in stews or pizzas. These are called "olives à la grecque" (= greek style) and it is a very popular recipe here in Provence.
Oh my gosh thank you!! We do have an olive tree and we've been wondering what to do with them! Thank you for writing out the instructions, we are saving them. Très gentil! 😊
Very happy for you, what a great place! I appreciate that you mentioned it's proximity to town. I was wondering. That seems like the perfect balance to have some peace and quiet but still be able to walk to town. Félicitations! 🎉
Bonjour, It was a pleasure to meet you at that nice night market just two days after discovering your videos. Small world. Enjoy this lovely season and the great activities it offers, in particular these wonderful night markets! Bonne chance pour les travaux à venir dans la maison ⚒️ Nicolas
We French will never forget that you Americans sacrificed lives to free us from Nazism. Therefore you will always be welcome in our beautiful France 👍👍👍
Frenchman here. Congratulations, you've had an unique opportunity with this house and its charming former owners! 14:39 Ah, the bidet! When I was a child, my mom explained to me (a little embarrassed) that it was used to wash feet... (Yes, it is!) But as I got older and learned more, I found out what it was really for... 😅
@earlyNova I'm French as well, and we had a bidet in the apartment my parents were renting when I was a kid, and she told me the same thing, that it was you for the feet 😂😂 I learned, much, much later what it was actually for 😂
Same here. We had a bidet when I was a kid, never used it. I know that it's designed also for the intimacy, but I've only seen people using it for feet. Anyway, I don't even think 1% of french use a bidet nowadays.
Hi, i'm in south west just near Pyrenées Mountains . Great pleasure to see you enjoy our beatiful and peaceful countryside. Your sweet place reminds me my grandparents home. birds sounds, quiet mornings.. magnifique souvenirs. Prenez soins de vous et bienvenue.
When you just have the name of a fruit on a bottle, it's usually homemade eau-de-vie 😅 made off market and can be up to 80% or more. Schnaps as we call it in Alsace
Great video. Thanks again. We're an American fam of 3 with a toddler who is debating some visas to get to Europe. Including DNV Spain, NLV France, etc. You're videos are very informative and inspirational.
This is wonderful, you guys are wonderful, your house is wonderful! Honestly I would live in that lovely home for year, observe the quality of light and THEN work with paint and wallpaper. Also, see how the plumbing is laid out so you can install a second toilet room or even a shower- especially if you host guests! Oh, I am so excited for your new adventure! 🎉🎉🎉
Ever since you announced you purchased a home, I’ve waited with bated breath for your video and am over the moon happy for you and your score of a lifetime. It’s a beautiful home with loads of history to share. I’m amazed at the reasonable price you paid. Good on You! Ah! The bidet. I also have washed my feet in one. I believe it was in Italy, regardless, it’s a handy tool to have. In the future, should you find yourselves in need of a house keeper and gardener, I and my credentialed Master Gardener husband would love to serve! In the meantime, I hope you’ll continue to update us on your restoration/updating progress. Prends bien soin de.
My husband and I are moving to France in the next week. We are beyond excited. We were so glad to have discovered your channel. Your information is so helpful. We love your property and house. So much character. 😊
Wow! You got a great deal on that magnificent house! We bought a "newer" house two years ago in the Aveyron. We also inherited some lovely pieces (including a bottle of eau de vie that is delicious and potent). The house sits on the hillside above the Lot river and the views of the hills around us are so lovely that we have decided against any kind of window treatments. We've been in France for 8 years now and absolutely love life here. Bonne continuation!
Congratulations on your new house. Totally love the builtins, armoires, exposed wiring and plumbing pipes etc. All of the things that most people in the US would tare out and bury in the walls. You are fortunate that it came completely furnished especially with the hidden goodies. Lovely grounds too. Nice color choice with the blue, one of my favorites. The three of you seem to team up very nicely. I’ve just started looking online for something much smaller in the Nantes/Loire valley regions. That’s how I found your channel. All best. Joe and Gigi retired in Cape May. All my best wishes.
I realize you made this video 3 months ago but, as a new viewer to the channel, I was excited for you as I watched you in your new home. I'm also a France lover and lover of things French, so it was cool to see what you've been able to achieve with the new house. It looks like you have a lot of work ahead, and I wish you well and look forward to seeing the results (maybe there are already videos available showing that).
This a liquor of raspberry from 1957 (even though it is very old, this is alcohol so it doesn't matter that much). By the way, I lived in the french countryside in Maine-et -Loire (my dad is a farmer) and it's just so much cool for both parents and childs to have grown up there. I think it's important because you get some important values by metting people that are not disconnected of the real world or even delusionnal because of the great cities. (in France we say "keeping the feet on Earth"). Country side is also the place where you must learn by yourself, where you can discover the nature and understand the legacy of the (old) people you'll find. As I'm now living in a greater city (Nantes), I'm really proud to show that i've been living in country side aswell.
Hey Raina! You’ve come a long way from Baylor Garland ICU 😂. Looks like you are living your best life. So happy for you!!! We’re still in Houston planning to get out of Texas in a couple of years. Not as exotic as France, unfortunately. 😊
I have family in the Charentes near Saintes and Cognac. I spent all my childhood holidays there in the 60s. Old women were still washing their clothes in the public washhouse with their wooden beaters because linen was turning whiter and cleaner this way. Every family had his own small herd of cows. They remember their English past, the traditional women's headdress is called humourously "Quichenotte" that means "Kiss not " Things have changed but the area is still very authentic and people very welcoming. I wish you a lot of happiness in this charming region.
Love your video ❤️. 22 years ago we decided to find a holiday cottage in Brittany ~ found a house (far too big for a holiday cottage) we fell in love with it and decided to move from U.K. permanently. Going round your home brings back all the memories of our first adventures. Good luck and I look forward to following your progress 👍.
The price of this house is low because Eymet is far from towns, hospitals, airports, train stations, industries, and is not near the most touristy places. And also because its exterior concrete rendering is particularly ugly. The interest of Eymet is that there are many English speakers.
Hello from Brazil (where we are on family duties until early October). House looks so fantastic - wishing you all every happiness. So impressed by all you have achieved (and the increasingly polished social media presence!). Best wishes and see you soon in Boukie’s hopefully! G & K
Thank you!! We love it. We've just bern living it it a couple months now, but we're so happy with it. When you get back you really have to come for dinner and see it! Hope y'all are enjoying Brazil!!
Congrats wit the house, it looks great. And it's very big. You live close by us. We are in clairac 45 minutes away from Eymet. We visit often the monthly brocante market there.
Congratulations its a beautiful house. May you have many happy memories there. We have just agreed to buy a large french barn property in the Charente, yesterday.
Coming from Florida and been in France for almost a year it was the best decision im 27 and just got the visa and got on the plane,. I have had so much support from the local Marie. My studio apparment in Bordeaux I am ringht in the center. There is more things to do in France, Your new house does look very lovely one day aspire to get a house like that. me and my wife are looking to move to France, and I think this is an amazing space, we are going to visit the south of France in the next week. But what is your town name called? did I hear M.A france?
it's incredible how much cheaper the houses are compared to the Paris region. I'd love to taste that Framboise liquor with you. Not sure if it's still any good but would be worth a try 😉
Lol, we're a little scared, but maybe if y'all do a video in our area one day, come by and we'll crack to open to give it try together! 😄 Love y'all's channel, btw. ❤️ You do such great work!!

What a lovely home! I look forward to seeing your improvements over time. I am currently renting an apartment in Paris, and haven't found my dream home/city yet. My husband and I are enjoying the search! Thank you for sharing your home- it is encouragement to make a dream come true! Merci!
One thing you should tell your compatriots is that Eymet is considered the capital of "Dordogneshire", an area of Périgord where British retirees are settling in droves. As a result, the locals (traders, craftsmen, etc.) are very accustomed to English-speaking residents. But this is not the case in other French countryside, particularly in the central regions, where many residents still do not master English and where it is difficult to live if you do not speak a little French. Apart from that, your house is very pretty, the garden and the view are magnificent.
Your house is full of charms and funny french details, which persuaded you to stay in this country. You'll still have years ahead, to bring it up to your real expectations. Incredible energy, very inspiring, a pure gem : destiny called you there
Congratulations! Your house and the garden look amazing! Sure there is work to do but it has great potential and you'll be able to renovate it the way you like. I love the old tiles on the kitchen wall although I am not sure if it would be possible to keep them.
How far are you from a main train station? I really appreciate you guys sharing your house with us, if we’re going to move to that area is because of you! Or at least just visit!
It depends on what you might call "main". Sainte Foy la Gtande or Bergerac are on the same tain line going to Bordeaux and either are about 30 minutes away. Marmande, where you can go to Toulouse or Bordeaux is about 30 min away. But both of those are regional trains. If you want to go to say Paris or other major cities in Europe you'll need to get to Toulouse or Bordeaux. We decided this was OK for us in the end, because we only need a train station about once a month, where as being in a lovely village that's beautiful and has what we need for daily life is well - everyday.
What a FUN video to watch! We are nearing retirement and plan to buy a townhouse or apartment (preferably une maison ancienne🥰) somewhere in the Loire Valley -- or in Dijon, our two favorite areas. There are so many beautiful and different regions of France, it can be a challenge to pick a favorite! We love your channel and can't wait to follow the progress of your home updates. Your videos are super informative and inspiring! Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your new life adventures. Looking forward to seeing what's next!
This is such a great house! I’ve seen a few that required a lot of work, before people could move in. It looks like it’s been well maintained for most of its long life. Well done!
This was an important box for us - it had to be habital immediately. We couldn't afford to pay for two places to live for months or years! So yes, this house has always been lived in and loved. It's solid, just needs lots of modernization (electric, windows, heating etc). It'll take time, but we can live here quite happily in the mean time.
Merci pour cette petite visite ! Wouha !
Ohhh, I had the same experience with the flavored water. I had some recently in an airport lounge and now I'm obsessed with it! What fruit/veggie/herb combinations do you do? Btw, I like the middle green color on the wall in the salon. 😁And I LOVE the color of the office. Do you guys still work for American companies? How does that work? I thought I had heard that France doesn't allow digital nomads, but maybe I misunderstood. It's a lovely house and thank you for showing it to us! The location seems perfect and the town is gorgeous.
We throw in where ever we have around the house! Cucumber, mint, citrus, basil...😋 I'm self employed and qualified for the entrepreneur professions libéral visa, so we do work and pay taxes in France.
Beautiful home in a lovely area! If you haven't tried the Perigordine Burgers at Le Moderne in Villeréal, they are absolutely amazing, I've had more than a few over the years visiting the Dordogne.
I love the floors, furniture and park. We call the open kitchens "cuisines américaines"... I don't understand what you did to the wallpapers ;-) Some people might advice chemicals to remove the glue but I prefer to use a steam machine. Beware of plumbing and electricity while renovating, make it safe and long-lasting if you can afford it before painting and decorating.
Love the videos and thanks for sharing your new home and much info about moving to France. We are considering a move from US and very interested in the Dordogne/Charente areas. We did an exploratory visit to France in May-June.
I've lived in France since 1997, and I will never go back. I discovered your channel and I smiled when I looked at your videos. Life here is so much different, but it's real .. and offers genuine quality. I now live in the Alps and actually work in Switzerland, but before I lived on the seaside in Brittany. You have everything you need here, and in most places it is affordable. The food is great, not to mention the great wine you can actually afford to buy. Learning french is not so difficult, but it's very important to mix in and show that you want to integrate. There are many expat communities, but that's not at all the same as blending in with the locals. I'm glad you enjoy your life here and that you promote it. Good luck to you and I'm looking forward to seeing your next video!

200K$ .... a good deal for the surface & the potential of the house.... We can all feel in your videos that you are happy in your new life....
Yes, all the America hating liberals that promised to leave if Trump won...lol.
Superbe vidéo ! Je vis en Thailande , après avoir visionné cette vidéo , mon pays me manque tellement ! Congratulations ! I'm happy for you , I wish you the best in my country !
shout out to Serge Gainsbourg et Jane Birkin picture in one of the room. Both are iconic.
Thanks for identifying!
For those who don't know, taken from Wikipedia:
Jane Mallory Birkin OBE (/ˈbɜːrkɪn/; 14 December 1946 - 16 July 2023) was a British-French actress and singer. She had a prolific career as an actress, mostly in French cinema.
A native of London, Birkin began her career as an actress, appearing in minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup (1966), and Kaleidoscope (1966). In 1968, she met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring with him in Slogan, which marked the beginning of a years-long working and personal relationship.[1] The duo released a debut album, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg, in 1969, and Birkin appeared in the film Je t'aime moi non plus in 1976 under Gainsbourg's direction. etc. etc.
@@bj6515So iconic! Thank you for reminding me ! 😊
Use a lime morter
@@aeolia80yes, unfortunately a lot of renovation back in the day didn’t bother about using cement on old building. Now it’s common knowledge but lot of house have these issue.

Thanks for the video! And congratulations for your purchase! What I can see in your videos is that you're getting more and more relieved and fullfilled, which makes me really happy for you. As a Frenchmen, we can be sometimes grumpy but we forget to be grateful to live in such an incredible country despite our moronic government. I wish you all the best
Aw, thank you, I think your observations are true! 😊
Merci!! ❤️
Beaucoup de potentiel cette maison. Les pièces qui ont été refaites l'ont été avec goût je trouve.
Love this! France is an amazing country, you will love it. If you ever come to Toulouse, lets meet!
@@BaguetteBound I had a mature olive tree in Phoenix. I decided to try them off the tree when they were almost ripe. BAD IDEA. Listen to Alex!
Very happy for you, what a great place! I appreciate that you mentioned it's proximity to town. I was wondering. That seems like the perfect balance to have some peace and quiet but still be able to walk to town. Félicitations! 🎉

Lovely comment, as I read its remembrance day.
Oh! Jane & Serge in a frame in your bedroom! Great tastes!
😂
@earlyNova I'm French as well, and we had a bidet in the apartment my parents were renting when I was a kid, and she told me the same thing, that it was you for the feet 😂😂 I learned, much, much later what it was actually for 😂
Same here. We had a bidet when I was a kid, never used it. I know that it's designed also for the intimacy, but I've only seen people using it for feet. Anyway, I don't even think 1% of french use a bidet nowadays.

When you just have the name of a fruit on a bottle, it's usually homemade eau-de-vie 😅 made off market and can be up to 80% or more. Schnaps as we call it in Alsace
Or goutte as we call it in Franche-Comté ^^ boire la goutte ^^

Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! Very neat to get to follow you on your journey! It’s a lovely home!
Thank you for sharing. Super nice house!
We close on our French house in the Charente in one month.
So excited.
I have family in the Charentes near Saintes and Cognac. I spent all my childhood holidays there in the 60s. Old women were still washing their clothes in the public washhouse with their wooden beaters because linen was turning whiter and cleaner this way. Every family had his own small herd of cows. They remember their English past, the traditional women's headdress is called humourously "Quichenotte" that means "Kiss not "
Things have changed but the area is still very authentic and people very welcoming.
What a gorgeous home and what you have dreamed of. Also, what a deal-easily much over a million $ in the U.S.
Congratulations!
The price of this house is low because Eymet is far from towns, hospitals, airports, train stations, industries, and is not near the most touristy places.
And also because its exterior concrete rendering is particularly ugly.
The interest of Eymet is that there are many English speakers.
Lol, you are using square pilows ?
I love Eymet, and you house is lovely.
Welcome in France and hope you enjoy my country.

Just subscribed to your channel. You guys seem to be such a lovely couple - best of luck!
Why on earth should the locals speak English (or the US version of it??)!!
What a joy to share the great news about your new home and garden 🎉🎉🎉 thank you for showing it as it is❤❤❤ I love all the details of an old house😊

Congratulations! Your house and the garden look amazing! Sure there is work to do but it has great potential and you'll be able to renovate it the way you like. I love the old tiles on the kitchen wall although I am not sure if it would be possible to keep them.
Vous avez trouvé un diamant brut mais magnifique. En haut.

Beautiful house for a beautiful family! How does the snow situation in winter compared to Colorado?
Exciting times! Thanks for watching and good luck!!
I love closed and unfitted kitchens! So much caracter and... that's exactly what I am going to have in my lovely French country House!

Love the videos and thanks for sharing your new home and much info about moving to France. We are considering a move from US and very interested in the Dordogne/Charente areas. We did an exploratory visit to France in May-June.
I love your house, such elegant propositions.
Thanks!! 🙂
