Why Americans feel shame about enjoying life (France is different)
The difference in how Americans vs the French approach finding pleasure in life starts at an early age

About Us:
We are an American family of 3 who moved to France for an extended stay adventure in 2022.
We wanted to experience Europe as more than rushed tourists on a 10-day vacation. To dive into the culture, learn a new language, experience daily life, and truly know what it was like to work and live somewhere other than the US.
In France, we set up a business, enrolled in a middle school, found housing, and even got our cat a European passport!
While preparing to leave for France, the information we found about staying in France for longer than a short vacation was directed at college students, young & single digital nomads, or retirees. Where was the useful information for families like us?
With two years under our belts in France, we created Baguette Bound to pass on what we have learned. We hope to make it easier and inspire other families who are interested in experiencing a long stay or moving to France with their families. Stay tuned for more information on French culture, adjusting and the logistics of moving across the world.

Once things get ugly in Europe with the welfare system failing, and the local people staring and saying some thing about you, you will remember you will ALWAYS be a foreigner, even if you get the citizenship, it does not means nothing to the locals, you always will be the "stupid foreigner that come to steal our jobs". When everything is ok, the locals do not care, but once the money get short, man take my word, only your country will be the salvation to those times. Enjoy it, I lived in Ireland for many years, in that time Irish people were such a love, today, what I hear from my friends there, there is no longer such love anymore.

The visit to the primary care doctor in Brussels is exactly the same! Except that I have to wait for ages inspite of my appointment, because he gives his full personal attention to every patients. Even if I just want new prescriptions he will talk to me and do a pretty complete check-up for easily an hour. I sometimes leave his practise at 10 pm at night. The cost for this is 35 € of whichthensurance refunds about 32€.A needy person would not pay anything. The prescrption is sent straight to a network of phamacies and I can pick it up anywhere. My German brotber fellill in my house and a house visit vost 50€. Again the doctor spent an hour with him and even spoke German, one of his 4 languages. As a pensioner the universal insurance costs me 10€ per month. I have a top-up insurance of 89€ per month that also affords me a single room at the hospital, the chief doctor etc. I no needy people wh get everything for the 10€. I also pay 220€ per year (!) for long term care insurance. I have never ever been afraid to see a doctor or dentist or go to the hospital. My son was on my 8nsurance for free until age 26. Same in Germany where I am from.

I taught at a US University for a few years, occasionally you would see staff and students carrying guns - even into lectures. The Irony was they were not allowed to carry knives. I moved to Australia and NZ and I now know for sure which are the more civilised societies in terms of collective good and standard of living, and it sure isn't the US.

Everything you said plus our own things. We enjoy being tourists, actually living in central Europe really cuts down on the commute! There are so many countries a short train ride away. Otherwise we love hiking and cycling and the trails here are phenomenal. We settled in Germany and love watching your show to see how Germany and France are simultaneously alike and completely different. Keep living the dream and allowing us the occasional glimpse of lives being well lived. ❤

The French really seem to be lagging behind in certain practices, lol. Here are a few reasons why I believe France is behind, several years behind and less advanced compared to other countries like the United States. I have consulted many ENT doctors in the south of France, particularly in cities like Avignon, Nîmes, and Montpellier. All of them told me that a rhinoplasty can only be performed under general anesthesia, thus excluding options for local anesthesia. In contrast, in the United States, rhinoplasty can be performed in several ways: under local anesthesia with sedation, under local anesthesia without sedation, under general anesthesia, and even under partial anesthesia. This illustrates how some aspects of aesthetic medicine in France seem frozen in time; after all, it is 2025! I also reached out to many beauticians in my region, exploring six different departments: Drôme, Vaucluse, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Hérault, and Gard. Unfortunately, none of them have ever offered to create split eyebrows because they do not know how to do it. Yet, in the United States, this practice is common and can even be found in small towns, not just in major centers like New York or Los Angeles. The photos I showed, depicting people with split eyebrows, were American, highlighting that this technique is widely practiced in the U.S., while in France, it remains completely unknown. Similarly, I contacted many tattoo artists to ask for tattoos in specific colors, such as turquoise blue and silver gray, particularly sparkling, flashy, glossy, and shiny colors. When showing examples of American tattoos done in these shades, a tattoo artist in the south of France admitted that he did not have these colors and could not create them. This clearly shows a certain limitation in skills and the offerings of tattoo artists in France. Regarding the field of piercings, I questioned piercers in several cities across seven different departments: Valence, Montélimar, Avignon, Orange, Nîmes, Montpellier, Miramas, Carpentras, Aubenas, Privas, and Bollène. To my surprise, none of them had ever performed pubic piercings (like the female Christina piercing) or genital piercings. It’s incredible, especially considering that these types of piercings have been common in the United States since the early 2000s. After all, it is 2025! There are many other examples that could illustrate this observation (though I don’t have them all in mind right now), but it clearly shows that France seems stuck in the Stone Age, lagging behind in certain practices, and less advanced than other countries like the United States and Canada. I am speaking here from my personal experience living in the south of France. Perhaps the situation is different in Paris, where these practices might be more accessible, but outside the capital, it is evident that many of these services are not available in other regions of France. Meanwhile, in the United States, these options are widely accessible, whether in small towns, rural areas, or large metropolises. This contrast is striking and highlights a certain gap in the acceptance and implementation of these aesthetic practices.

Hi, TY for the "feedback" on our food culture seen by you Americans. I am glad to give you back some comments about this nice post. About fork and knife : a burger with 4 of 5 floors of meat, salad, ham, pickles, and two diferent sauces cannot be eaten with hands unless you wear a diving suit. Cannot be eaten with fork and knife either, I must agree. So one should consider this before ordering such a dish 🤔 About Butter : as I see you live in Dordogne. South western France (my place) is NOT a butter country at all ! (butter stops in the Charentes, 100 km further to the north...) In Bergerac, Sigoules, etc, one cooks with oil (olive oil) or DUCK FAT which is mandatory in the making most traditionnal dishes. Apéro, now : Apero is much more than just peanuts and drinks in a café. If one invites some friends for Apéro one night, it would start about 7:30 pm and ends late in the night, after emptying together an undetermined number of bottles of wine, pastis and beer, and eating all the fridge plus some foie gras and any other homemade and canned pâtés available in the backroom. This is absolutely systematic when UBB or Stade Toulousain rugby games are displayed on TV 🤩. Have a good time here !!! Pascal

We rented our house, sold our vehicles, brought our two small dogs and held our breath. We are an older couple but are in good health and very mobile. Timing was everything. Dog’s FDA certification, preparing our home for rental (hiring a property management company), selling and storing our home furnishings, health insurance, plane tickets 🎫, a rental in France which was not refundable, training our dogs for the long plane ride. Getting our dogs ready was a hurdle because we wouldn’t leave them behind. One dog is a Don Knotts dog…very nervous but sweet. And finally qualifying for a long term visa was nerve wracking. Since we had a window of time due to our flights and rental in Paris, if the visa and/or the FDA dogs certification failed, we were in a bind. Stress, stress and more stress! We just said we are not going to fail! The visa and the FDA certification came through (the FDA dog certification showed up the day before our flight 😱) and the 6 months of preparation was rewarded with our successful transition to France 🇫🇷. Once we arrived at our temporary stop in Paris, we had to get a pet passport. Yes they need a “passport”! For us, we have gotten our prescriptions transferred to French by a wonderful doctor in Bordeaux. That was seamless! We have been in France since late October 2024. We are diligent in studying French and have been improving. We are waiting for the letter from the prefecture for our health Check up and will sign up for the French health care this month. The dogs have adapted quite well and have been good travelers! We are here for a year but have talked about staying for longer. We are still in the honeymoon stage but we are quite adaptable. So going forward we will enjoy the winter and see what city or town is next to visit for now.

Why is anybody surprised? The USA is a divide-and-rule Mecca for the ultra-rich who practice it. "Divide and rule" (or "divide and conquer") is a political or strategic strategy used to gain or maintain control over a region of the planet by causing division and fostering internal conflict. The idea is to weaken opponents or rival factions, preventing them from uniting against the DIVIDING power. The strategy is based on the principle that a divided people are easier to manage, control, defeat or destroy. Lies (incl. "lying by omission") is an integral part of the strategy. Here’s how the strategy typically works: *Creating Divisions:* Those in power may intentionally exploit existing differences or create new ones-such as between ethnic groups, social classes, religions, political factions, or other groups within a population. By emphasizing these differences, the leadership makes it harder for these groups to cooperate or form alliances. *Fostering Competition and Distrust:* The ruling power might manipulate one group to distrust another, using propaganda, misinformation, or manipulation of resources to create rivalries or tensions. *Maintaining Control:* With internal divisions, the groups are less likely to pose a unified threat to the ruling power. Any resistance is weakened by competing priorities, distrust, or fragmentation. *Not every single group or power involved necessarily has to understand their role within the divide-and-rule strategy, which is why it persists eternally.* The effectiveness of divide and rule lies in its ability to prevent the emergence of collective opposition by exploiting or manufacturing internal conflicts, making it a powerful tactic for maintaining control over diverse populations or competitors.

Dane here: Free healthcare, free education even the university is free and the students get financial supported by the state when studying oh yeah and they even get subsidy to their apartment rent, oh and no one need have any weapons.. I can go for a walk at midnight and feel safe. Oh and the people of Greenland have the same rights as danes so I don’t think they want to become Americans.. oh and we have 6 weeks of full payment vacation a year plus a few so called holy days off work plus a Labour day.. oh and mothers have 1 year payed maternity and the father has 3 months also payed by the state.. and most people work 37 hours per week oh and the lowest salary for non educated is $19,41 and I doubt no adults get this as it’s probably only for the 16-18 year old young people trying to make a little extra while studying. Most jobs demand education and that is of course free or even payed by either your company or the state..There’s probably more great benefits but America still see themselves as the greatest nation so they wouldn’t understand anyways 😂

We (Belgium) distinguish between two types of celery: green and white. The green celery (Leaf celery, cutting celery, or soup celery) is used to make soups and sauces as a flavoring. The white celery (stem celery) is eaten as a vegetable. The one you're showing is for soup. It may look less appealing, but that doesn't matter because it will disappear into the soup anyway.

Hello, congratulations on your interesting videos! I'm French, There's one subject that would interest me, it's religion but I think it's too delicate a subject to deal with in a video! We have a very different relationship with religion from yours because of our history. The philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment made us question the abuses of religions that were important throughout Europe at the time and made us much more suspicious. I think that the majority of French people are more humanist than religious. I'm not saying we're right at all, I think there are bad sides in France and the USA.

950 comments! These videos are so enjoyable for me to relive my own experience in Europe and I feel "homesick" for it nearly every day, though I am American by birth. Some questions still bother me... have been back now from France and Switzerland 9 years and I have a good perspective. What I don't understand is how the French can manage the healthy meals if both parents are working( or if a single parent is working). Who does the dishes, for example? Are the grandparents living with the working parents and doing the dishes while the parents return to the office, or home office after lunch, or are there kitchen elves? Here in America now, I end up staying up until 1 a.m. doing dishes most nights, as a single person working part time...I will never regret moving over there. I came first as a "trailing spouse", later as a single person. I never ate out much while there and while occasionally I would eat frozen meals, the ones over there taste like homemade, for the same price as here!

I just went to your website to find out about the Done With You Visa application - I would be applying for a VISA that allows me to do my remote business in France - are you offering help with that yet?

Mr. Michael Moore: "The best country in the world" now has 60 million people living below the poverty line. I am concerned about the 20 million addicts, the homeless and the millions of convicted prisoners. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world. It worries me that "The best country in the world" is in 32nd place with respect to the number of medical doctors on the planet. I am concerned that we do not distinguish between private wealth (2.7%), and public misery (almost 35%)..." Yet... we still believe that the United States is, for the world, the example to follow as "The Best Country". Now, a Question: Why do I feel FEAR when a Cop approaches me, when should I feel SAFE in presence of a Police Officer? Answers: Cuz in the Cop's opinion, here in USA, we are All Suspects!!!

I pay way too much for care where i live , there is free care but its mostly emergency care , Think ill move to france or Spain. It would save me over 2000 euro a year , and 8 thousand in school fees for 2 kids .

Another thing that's deceptive in quality of life for Americans is with grocery prices. My Fiancée is floridian. Between the 2 of us, food shopping can cost over $600 for the whole month and that's just our essentials for a healthy diet and a few more expensive items for treat dinners and stuff for home made meals. In the UK, our monthly food budget would be like £390 and that also includes us going out to eat like 4 or 5 times during the month. A cheap but nice 8inch pizza is like 97p in the UK. In Walmart it's at least $3. Grocery shopping is cheaper in the UK. Also, we pay less in national insurance every year than the average American pays for health insurance and we don't have deductibles
