Medellin: Inside the sex tourism capital of Colombia

- The city of Medellin in Colombia has been on a bit of a journey: from notorious home of the drugs cartels and Pablo Escobar, to newfound haven for sex tourism and now to a city where dozens of men die in mysterious circumstances, often after arranging to meet women on dates.
With nearly a hundred cases in the last few years, our Latin American correspondent Guillermo Galdos has been to investigate.
He found a city where organised crime is still rampant, but branching out into the sex trade. And now the tourists are being targeted, with a deadly local drug nicknamed Devil’s Breath.
As a Colombian citizen, I really don't recommend to come here for tourism...

If you’ve ever been in one of these houses/apartments, there are almost no gringos/tourists/americans. It’s 99% Colombian men. I just got back to the U.S. from Medellin. Tourists are only in poblado and laureless. But the city is so much bigger than those two areas.

I recently traveled to Medellin for work and stayed in a shared Airbnb. When I arrived, I was surprised to find three women in the kitchen wearing very little clothing. The guys who brought them were from Australia, and every night more Venezuelan women showed up. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. I asked the younger ones if they needed help, but all they were interested in was money..

I'm British and have spent several months in Medellin as a tourist and working as a doctor in a hospital. While Medellin has its dark side, the people are beautiful and friendly. Don't let this video put you off if you want to visit. But try to learn and speak Spanish.

Blame this on Medellín's political class, the corporate elite and their involvement in the illegal economy, including drug trafficking.
Most of the girls are from Venezuela, and fled their country because of the Venezuelan President Dictator Maduro and the poverty. Most went to Colombia for a better life. If you want to put blame, Maduro is the man responsible for this and for his people leaving by the millions.

If you've ever been in one of these houses/ apartments, there are almost no gringos/tourists/ americans. It's 99% Colombian men. I just got back to the U.S. from Medellin. Tourists are only in poblado and laureless. But the city is so much bigger than those two areas. Tourists only go to Medellin, bogota, Cartagena, and sometimes Cali. There are definitely markets outside those tourist regions so how do you explain that? Tourists just get all the headlines because they post and talk about online and out in the open whereas Colombians don’t talk publicly about it. Also a ton of taxi drivers in Colombia will try to sell to you. Almost everyone in the city assumes you’re there for that. It’s incredibly annoying

Good report. I visited Medellin this March and I have to say I always felt safe. The city is beautiful and has an energy flowing through it. If tourists use their common sense and stay away from certain vices, then all should be well.

Just visited Medellin 2 weeks ago. Its an absolute beautiful city. As an American, I went there to visit my friend. As a tourist just be respectful and not engage in all the illegal activities that happens there. Its sad to watch these predators taking advantage of the loose laws and lack of policing. Otherwise the people are very authentic and friendly. So, please respect the places you visit.

I have no problem with mass arrests of criminals but the system that Bukele has created to arrest criminals and holding them indefinitely without due process has predictably expanded and is now being used against the political opposition. Bukele's second term is unconstitutional but he remains popular for now because he built prisons and stuffed them with gang members. The fact that he also ended democracy in El Salvador will take a bit longer to sink in.
My wife and I own a small home in Colombia and we go between Medellin and our US home frequently. About half the time in each. I have never had any problems in Medellin and to me it is a beautiful place to live. I am a gringo and my wife is Colombian. Of course, I do not troll in areas spoken of in this video, but some of the parks we do go to for the nightlife and restaurants and like I say, never any problems. You can come to Colombia and have a great time, just don't look for trouble, like any other vacation spot in the world.
Also, your wife is a local who knows what's going on. She is your biggest protection out there, whether you acknowledge it or not.

The new mayor of Medellin is in the news so much that you would think that he is the President of Colombia and in charge of the country. The most visited cities in Colombia are first Bogota, then Medellin, then Cartagena, then Cali. You have to be on guard when visiting each one of them. To get away from all the drama you have to visit the other cities that no one talks about like, Bucaramanga, Pereira, Barranquilla, San Andres, Manizales.

There are government websites which can tell you which areas to avoid.
Pacific coast needs to be avoided and also Cartagena is very touristy so I would be careful there. And do not just wander around in countryside etc. or wear flashy clothes.
I took a basic phone , basic digital camera and no laptop or jewellery.
I went as a female solo traveller and was fine.
Also add the FARC , the drug cartels , the millions of Venezuela refugees, the many foreign migrants... and of course the corruption.

Scopolamine has been about for decades. It is very often used in surgery, as an antimuscarinic. It may be relatively new to the trade in illegal compounds - but that is something I know little about.
In the West it has been around for hundreds of years. It was given to women during labour, to make them forget the pain.

Scopolamine comes from plants belonging to the nightshade family. It’s been used since ancient times as a medicine and for ceremonial/religious/ cultural purposes. Medicines containing Scopolamine can be bought over the counter at pharmacies, it’s used to relieve intestinal cramping.
Incredible, but this the first ever demonstration of how escopolamine is actually delivered in a spray.
When I lived in Colombia 10 years ago, they had a slogan for tourism: "Colombia: The only risk, is wanting to stay." But I think there are a few other risks, too...

Just an FYI there are entire States in the US that have higher homicide and violent crimes stats then Medellin. The crime there is way over blown as well under 1 in 100,000 tourists have died in the last few years to the issues pointed out in this hit piece. And fyi Pablo Escobar was ended by the Police over 30 years, Medellin is nothing like it was back then. I know I have lived there for over a year and a half out of the last three and loved every minute of it and am looking forward to returning again soon.
Keep using outlier data, that's likely untrue since you have no sources, to push your bias opinion. The fact was there were many unreported crimes or crimes swept under the rug in Columbia. Living there for only a "year and a half" doesn't make you an expert on the reality of that place.

About 1 out of every 100,000 tourists who visited Medellin last year died by overdosing on scopolamine or violent death. So if you're an American like I am you're actually safer there then any city in the USA. Especially if you're not out a night looking for "action" or drugs. As someone who has lived in Medellin for over a year and a half out of the last three I can tell you the crime problem in Medellin is way over blown. There were roughly 31 tourist deaths in Medellin in 2023 and half of them were suicides, natural causes or self induced drug overdoses. For the most part the guys who do get scoped, drugged with scopolamine, are usually accidental deaths. They are guys who arrange dates on Tinder or other apps and the ladies who drugged them gave them to much so they OD. I personally knew two guys who were drugged, both lived and were simply robbed and they made stupid mistakes. Never leave your open drink accessible to people you don't know or just invite them into your room to hangout, that's good advice anywhere. I look forward to returning to Medellin next year, the people are wonderful, the culture is sexy and vibrant and the city is very clean and appealing for the most part and the neighborhoods I have lived in are second to none for quality of life. The best thing about Medellín, imho, is the location. Really it is stunning. Something great to do there is to go on one of the buses that take the regular public around the towns etc. near Medellín. You will see such beautiful scenery and have a lot of fun with the Colombian people, who are very good natured. I went on a bus trip to el Peñón de Guatapé, truly unforgettable.

If the average tourist stays for 2 weeks, then the average number of tourists present is 4,000 of 100,000. Then the annual death rate is 1 out of 4000 or 25 out of 100,000 which is the average for Colombia or Mexico as a whole or the worst cities of the US.

Add another couple of zeros to that there Steve. 100,000 is the amount per crime base not the amount of tourists. You can go to Pablado on a Friday night and probably see 4000 tourists walking around. The State of Alabama has a higher homicide and violent crime rate then Medellin as do a number of States and there are well over 100 US cities that have higher violent crime statistics as well. This is a typical clickbait presentation making something sound much worse then it is. I have spent the last 4 years traveling the globe looking for a place to retire and Colombia is still number one and it wasn't even on my original list. I ended up in Medellin by chance and will be returning to retire there next year now that I am finally old enough to collect social security. Good luck if your stuck in America you'll need it.

Scopolamine is often used for sea sickness. It’s available in a transdermal patch that is placed behind the ear. It has also been used as an “ truth serum’ but I’m not sure of the dosage . I’d like to try some in solution.
Don’t, it just gives you a horrible, nightmarish trip. Trust me on this one. They sometimes put Scopolamine in Ayahuasca in South America.

Medellin is statistically safer than several cities in the UK and a lot in the US. Colombia is an amazing country and not just about what sleazy square where people only go for drugs and prostitution.

Dont paint all of Medellin with the same brush. A very one sided depiction of the city and some highly misleading reporting. Poblado is not typical of the rest of Medellin, nor of Colombia, which has some of the politest most hospitable people in the world
I am a guy Brazilian living in the UK, every time I speak to someone from Colombia, Colombians are always nice, friendly are kind. Every country has its problems. In Europe English people are the most violent, they have recently burned police stations, buses, cars, looted shops and attacked the police.
In England there are problems involving drugs and crime of all kinds but British people always blame foreigners but British people don't understand they are the problem. Every night in the weekend there are more police because when English people go out to drink and get drunk they also fight and cause disorder in the streets.
The British media should focus on the good things about other countries and highlight the bad stuff that happens in the UK.

Ignoring the problems with your country doesn't hide the fact that the problems are there. Even some of your fellow Columbians who fled to the US recommended people not to travel to Columbia. They said the risk wasn't worth it.
