Oh how I miss those days, Carolyn.. remember when there were so many things people could do? And how they could get together and enjoy those things together for hours on end.. Remember the simplicity and fulfillment and enrichment? Remember the enjoyment of the beautiful intricacies of the simplicity? Remember the long hours of days without mindless distractions that willed us to think and imagine and do naturally? So many things I remember.. and the people I miss so much.

@@shaneh1003 It's funny you say all of that. So, I'll share this with you. I own a small piece of property that I'm building my paradise on. One of the rules I will maintain is for those who either live there or who visit, all phones, tablets etc will stay in the car and not come inside the gates. Inside we tend to animals (mostly ducks, possibly rabbits and a goat. Maybe some chickens too and certainly a few dogs), we will eat our own food from our garden, we will enjoy communion with each other and we will NOT allow ourselves to be distracted by such things. No tv, no computers, no nothing. Just us and nature and friends.

@@danroberts9050 That does sound wonderful, and rare. Don’t forget all the things people used to enjoy, or just participate in, together. Music, crafts, hard work, outdoor games, stories, etc. The cameras recording and photographing it all may be your most difficult thing to dissuade.
Thank you for sharing. I live in what used to be a small town, and work on a ranch outside a town with only a fire/water dept., a church, and a community center that used to be a schoolhouse, but even out there it’s very rare to find anyone living free and natural. They all need the materialism, technology, and artificiality to be satisfied.

@@Eduardo_3334 no thanks, what i learned from religion is that they want to control your life for their own benefit, they don't care anything about you, they're just looking for slaves to work for them. You don't need God, jesus is a liar, and you don't need heaven. It's just a carrot on a stick, they promise all kinds of things, but never deliver, especially no proof. Save yourself from the lies. It hurts me to see people still following these herectic books. They abuse your trust. There is no relationship between you and God, God doesn't need you, God never talks to you, in your prayer you are just talking to yourself. Just try it, ask god to talk to you and then remain silent, it will stay silent because God doesn't give a damn about you.

I first heard a zither 55 years ago when my then-best friend learned to play it. She taught herself that (we were both 15), and the autoharp, and was very good at both by the time we graduated high school.
We parted ways decades ago, so I don't know if she plays any longer, or if she's even alive. But I'll never forget the sounds she could produce on the zither---and Simon and Garfunkel were her favorite artists of the time, so she played a lot of their music.

Wow, really appreciate this. My Grandmother has and plays one of these.
Her first language is an old dialect of Low German that's increasingly dying out, and she's now in her 90's and suffering from dementia.
I feel like many of the old "common" ways of doing things in the world are getting lost and forgotten in the ever sweeping wave of modernization and progress. There's good in that of course, but we also lose something of ourselves along the way.
The sound of silence is a fitting tune to play on it. Thanks for playing and sharing it with all of us.

I did record my Dad talking with his childhood friend (neighbour's girl when they were small) in Frankfurt 1999, and now they both are gone. I'm happy to have their voices - in this case on MiniDisc, which should be quite a stable medium. Making safety copies is, of course, also good.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls
    In tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

I received a Zither at Christmas in the late 60's. I has fewer strings in the wider area. It has good sound. It came with music sheets to slide under the strings which were joined with lines at each note. You played the notes following the lines from left to right. I loved be able to play the few songs that I had, I even tried to make more sheets on my own. I have introduced many children to this intriging instruments over the years, 3 of my own. My son in very musical so he will be the next to keep it. I am going to research for tutorials.

Fantastic. I thank this individual so much for taking the time to learn so well how to play this instrument. I had one in the 1970's and lacked the discipline to learn how to play it. I thought of buying an electronic zither or autoharp but didn't since I knew I'd lack the motivation to learn. (I also purchased 3 unused guitars over the decades. Now am 78.) Putting this on FB RIGHT NOW.

    [Verse 1]
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
    [Verse 2]
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by
The flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
    [Verse 3]
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
    [Verse 4]
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops, fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
    [Verse 5]
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
    And the sign said:
"The words of the prophets are
    Written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

@@HilaryB. I changed the words on purpose, and added a verse. Whenever I write down a song's lyrics, i can't help but change them. I have actually been writing lyrics for years. What I do, is I start with a song, change the lyrics quite a bit to have a different message or to be about something different, and then i change the music a bit also so it is not a complete plagerism. lol
